Politics in a Glass Case - Feminism, Exhibition Cultures and Curatorial Transgressions (Hardcover, New): Angela Dimitrakaki,... Politics in a Glass Case - Feminism, Exhibition Cultures and Curatorial Transgressions (Hardcover, New)
Angela Dimitrakaki, Lara Perry
R3,777 Discovery Miles 37 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What happens to art when feminism grips the curatorial imagination? How do sexual politics become realised as exhibits? Is the struggle against gender discrimination compatible with the aspirations of museums led by market values? Beginning with the feminist critique of the art exhibition in the 1970s and concluding with reflections on intersectional curating and globalisation after 2000, this pioneering collection offers an alternative narrative of feminism's impact on art. The essays provide rigorous accounts of developments in Scandinavia, Eastern and Southern Europe as well as the UK and US, framed by an introduction which offers a politically engaging navigation of historical and current positions. Delivered through essays, memoirs and interviews, discussion highlights include the Tate Modern hang, relational aesthetics, the global exhibition, feminism and technology in the museum, the rise of curatorial collectivism, and insights into major exhibitions such as Gender Check on Eastern Europe. Bringing together two generations of curators, artists and historians to rethink distinct and unresolved moments in the feminist re-modelling of art contexts, this volume dares to ask: is there a history of feminist art or one of feminist presentations of artworks? Contributors include Deborah Cherry, Jo Anna Isaak, Malin Hedlin Hayden, Lubaina Himid, Amelia Jones, Kati Kivimaa, Alexandra Kokoli, Kuratorisk Aktion, Suzana Milevska, Suzanne Lacy, Lucy Lippard, Sue Malvern, Nancy Proctor, Bojana Pejic, Helena Reckitt, Jessica Sjoeholm Skrubbe, Jeannine Tang and Catherine Wood.

The Divine Proportion reveals a number of simple patterns: It is seen in the seed patterns of fruits, the family tree of bees, the pyramids of Egypt, Gothic cathedrals, Renaissance paintings, the human body, shells ... the list is endless. Mathematicians use the Greek symbol to represent the Divine Proportion and equate it to a number that is defined by the ratio (1 + 5) / 2 or 1.6180339.... Numbers do little, however, in describing this unique ratio that is found everywhere in nature and for 2500 years has been an aesthetic guide in art and architecture. Beginning with calculations found on clay tablets in ancient Babylon, the story of Divine Proportion can be traced alongside the history of numbers to the fractals of the digital age. As its many forms unfold we uncover the Golden Rectangle in the Parthenon, Golden Spirals in the human inner ear, a Golden Angle in the petal patterns of a rose, and the Fibonacci numbers in lilies, daisies, pineapples, and in our own DNA. With its natural balance and elegant beauty, the Divine Proportion is a perpetual reminder that our hope for regeneration and continuity lies in realizing the meaningful and harmonious relationship of all the parts to the whole. This book deals with the Divine Proportion, a secret code that rules art, nature, and science. It is known by many names: Golden Mean, Sacred Cut and Phi are only a few; and it is not by chance that the Divine Proportion was given its name. It has been called divine because over thousands of years it has been deemed to be so.

Tore Kristensen, Anders Michelsen, Frauke Wiegand
R3,772 Discovery Miles 37 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the passage from new media and tabloid culture, over political spin, branding and experience economy, to city scapes, design, and art in contemporary society, visual culture-visuality, 'the visual', 'the image world'-is a key denominator. The book is the first volume of the project Transvisuality in three volumes, initiated by University of Copenhagen and Liverpool University Press. It collects leading scholars from all parts of the world in a scrutiny of what the visual means today. It builds on the debates on visual culture and visuality in the past decades studies of culture, but expands on these debates from the perspectives of theory, analysis and design. It shows how the visual impacts on the current world and transcends the most different aspects of the social: how the visual becomes transvisual by adapting and creating culture in the global, translocal world. It ultimately addresses the pervasive but puzzling claim of contemporary research that 'the world has become more visual' and tries to answer it. In the first volume the issue of the dimension of the visual is a paramount theme, seen from different interdisciplinary angles. Whether approaches are prone to nominalism and discourse or to issues of cognition and framing, the question of what the visual is and what impacts may pertain to it remains a fundamental challenge to cultural research.

'A remarkable set of essays unlike anything else' - Kadish Morris, Guardian As in her fiction, the essays in Out of the Sun demonstrate Esi Edugyan's commitment to seeking out the stories of Black lives that history has failed to record. Written with the death of George Floyd and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement in the background, in five wide-ranging essays Edugyan reflects on her own identity and experiences as the daughter of Ghanaian immigrants. She delves into the history of Western Art and the truths about Black lives that it fails to reveal, and the ways contemporary Black artists are reclaiming and reimagining those lives. She explores and celebrates the legacy of Afrofuturism, the complex and problematic practice of racial passing, the place of ghosts and haunting in the imagination, and the fascinating relationship between Africa and Asia dating back to the 6th Century. With calm, piercing intelligence, and a refusal to think on anyone's terms but her own, Edugyan asks difficult questions about how we reckon with the past and imagine the future, and invites the reader to think alongside her in working out what the answers to these may be.

Human Flow - Stories from the Global Refugee Crisis (Paperback): Ai Weiwei Human Flow - Stories from the Global Refugee Crisis (Paperback)
Ai Weiwei; Edited by Boris Cheshirkov, Ryan Heath, Chin-chin Yap
R690 Discovery Miles 6 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A powerful portrait of the greatest humanitarian emergency of our time, from the director of Human Flow In the course of making Human Flow, his epic feature documentary about the global refugee crisis, the artist Ai Weiwei and his collaborators interviewed more than 600 refugees, aid workers, politicians, activists, doctors, and local authorities in twenty-three countries around the world. A handful of those interviews were included in the film. This book presents one hundred of these conversations in their entirety, providing compelling first-person stories of the lives of those affected by the crisis and those on the front lines of working to address its immense challenges. Speaking in their own words, refugees give voice to their experiences of migrating across borders, living in refugee camps, and struggling to rebuild their lives in unfamiliar and uncertain surroundings. They talk about the dire circumstances that drove them to migrate, whether war, famine, or persecution; and their hopes and fears for the future. A wide range of related voices provides context for the historical evolution of this crisis, the challenges for regions and states, and the options for moving forward. Complete with photographs taken by Ai Weiwei while filming Human Flow, this book provides a powerful, personal, and moving account of the most urgent humanitarian crisis of our time.

R1,275 Discovery Miles 12 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An Open Access edition of this book is available on the Liverpool University Press website and the OAPEN library. The Francophone Caribbean and the American South are sites born of the plantation, the common matrix for the diverse nations and territories of the circum-Caribbean. This book takes as its premise that the basic configuration of the plantation, in terms of its physical layout and the social relations it created, was largely the same in the Caribbean and the American South. Essays written by leading authorities in the field examine the cultural, social, and historical affinities between the Francophone Caribbean and the American South, including Louisiana, which among the Southern states has had a quite particular attachment to France and the Francophone world. The essays focus on issues of history, language, politics and culture in various forms, notably literature, music and theatre. Considering figures as diverse as Barack Obama, Frantz Fanon, Miles Davis, James Brown, Edouard Glissant, William Faulkner, Maryse Conde and Lafcadio Hearn, the essays explore in innovative ways the notions of creole culture and creolization, terms rooted in and indicative of contact between European and African people and cultures in the Americas, and which are promoted here as some of the most productive ways for conceiving of the circum-Caribbean as a cultural and historical entity.

R2,844 Discovery Miles 28 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This pioneering book explores the connections between art and artistic processes and entrepreneurship. The authors expertly identify several areas and issues where research on art and artistic processes can inform and develop the traditional field of entrepreneurship research. Nine original chapters by an international group of scholars take a detailed look at the sources of new art ideas, how they are transformed into tangible objects of art, make their way through often hostile selection environments, and ultimately go on to become valued and accepted by the general public. Making a number of original contributions at the crossroads of art and entrepreneurship, the book speaks to researchers across these fields, practicing artists interested in promoting and gaining acceptance for their work, as well as policymakers concerned with sustained dynamics of the art arena. Entrepreneurship researchers interested in new developments in the field will find this unique book invigorating. The fact that picture dealing is in the author's genetic make-up becomes apparent very early in this delightful book. Peter Johnson records 50 years of the international art market and his part in some of the most interesting deals of his generation. Through the doors of Peter's London gallery walked (and subsequently onto the pages of Heart in Art) any number of royalty, dukes, prime ministers, auctioneers, international businessmen, sculptors, European nobility, academics, contemporary artists, and even the wife of a U.S. president--some were buyers, some sellers, and others just popped into his office. Each has a part in Peter's story and each enlivens this book. It is also about the author's life in general and his wide-ranging interests--including architecture, flying, gardens, horses, and music--with many entertaining anecdotes.

A History Of The Iziko South African National Gallery - Reflections On Art And National Identity (Paperback): Anna Tietze A History Of The Iziko South African National Gallery - Reflections On Art And National Identity (Paperback)
Anna Tietze
R324 R253 Discovery Miles 2 530 Save R71 (22%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

In South Africa, with its highly contested and changing understandings of national identity, its National Gallery is no less a contested space. A History of the Iziko South African National Gallery considers questions of artistic and cultural identity, from the late 19th century to the present day.

It explores how the gallery has understood its function and its public, as a 'national' gallery from 1930 and, before that, the chief gallery of the Cape Colony. This question is investigated through a study of the gallery's administration, collection and exhibition practices over the last 150 years. What is understood by and expected of a national gallery varies considerably worldwide. Should it regard itself as part of a broad international cultural discourse, or should it be representative of a specifically national - or even regional - identity?

The gallery is a microcosm of the greater debate: how the South African nation relates to the larger world and how, if at all, it understands the concept of a shared culture. In the last 20 years, Museum Studies have become a major part of the field of Cultural Studies. There is a vast literature on what might be called the 'history' museum, but far less on the art museum or gallery. To date, there has been no large-scale historical inquiry into the Iziko SANG, the country's national gallery.

The absence of such a history marks a serious gap in the literature, which this study aims to fill.
