Advances in technology and human skill have made possible percutaneous catheter-based procedures for a wide spectrum of structural heart disease. A growing number of structural heart diseases that over the past two decades would have required open heart surgery can be safely treated using percutaneous catheter-based procedures.Traditionally, guidance of catheter-based procedures is done using fluoroscopy and two-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography (2D TEE). The recent introduction in the clinical practice of RT 3D TEE has overcome most of limitations of 2D TEE. The purpose of this book is to describe the use of this imaging modality in percutaneous interventional procedures underlying its growing role and acceptance among the interventional cardiologists but also emphasizing areas of weakness. Because today interventional cardiology ranges from closure of atrial and ventricular septal defects, to repair of mitral regurgitation and aortic stenosis, from the closure of left atrial appendage and prosthesis dehiscence, to the recent use in electrophysiological procedure, this book targets not only specialists in echocardiography and interventional cardiology but also general cardiologists. General cardiologists will find in any chapter anatomy of the structure treated (i.e. atrial septum, mitral valve...), a description of the morphopathology as seen with RT 3D TEE (degenerative or ischemic mitral regurgitation) the up-to-date indications to the specific percutaneous treatment and typical and unusual clinical cases.

Echocardiography in Mitral Valve Disease (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Francesco Fulvio Faletra Echocardiography in Mitral Valve Disease (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Francesco Fulvio Faletra
R2,897 Discovery Miles 28 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a comprehensive account of the role of echocardiography in patients with mitral valve disease. The normal echocardiographic anatomy of the mitral valve is first presented, and the applications of echocardiography in mitral valve disease are then covered in detail by experts from different subspecialties in cardiology. Topics include etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, assessment of severity, and role of echocardiography in percutaneous and surgical techniques. The highly readable text is supported by a wealth of color images obtained with 3D echocardiography, currently the gold standard for the evaluation of mitral valve disease. The interdisciplinary approach used in describing the diagnostic and therapeutic applications will make this book useful for the clinical cardiologist as well as the echocardiographer. It will allow cardiologists to advance their knowledge in the field and will serve as an excellent updating tool for professionals engaged in echocardiography and cardiac diagnostic imaging.

This report provides a review of stem cells/progenitor cells and their responses to ionising radiation in relation to issues relevant to stochastic effects of radiation which form a major part of the ICRP system of radiological protection. Current information on stem cell characteristics, maintenance and renewal, evolution with age, location in stem cell "niches", radiosensitivity to acute and protracted exposures, is presented in a series of substantial reviews as Annexes concerning haematopoietic tissue, mammary gland, thyroid, digestive tract, lung, skin and bone. This foundation of knowledge of stem cells is used in the main text of the report to provide a biological insight to issues such as the linear-no-threshold (LNT) model, cancer risk among tissues, dose-rate effects and changes in the risk of radiation carcinogenesis by age at exposure and attained age.

Antonio Malvasi
R3,798 Discovery Miles 37 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This updated book is a practical guide to intrapartum ultrasonography to help practitioners improve labor and delivery, and to limit, where possible, complications. Presenting the authors' experiences, the book summarizes the state of the art in normal and abnormal labor. It clearly documents the use of intrapartum ultrasonography to evaluate the first and second stages of labor and diagnose the occiput posterior and transverse positions. Each situation is analyzed with the help of numerous informative images and invaluable tips and tricks showing how fetal head engagement and progression can be documented objectively. The importance of ultrasound in obstetrics risk management is also addressed. Explaining how intrapartum ultrasonography can be used to assess whether a safe natural delivery is likely or whether operative procedures are required, the book is a valuable resource for all professionals - physicians and midwifes alike - caring for women in labor.

Drs. Siassiand Noori have trained hundreds of physicians to use ultrasound equipment toexamine neonatal cardiac function at the first sign of distress, leading to fasterdiagnosis and referral to pediatric cardiologists for treatment. This book is designed to helpreaders develop the skills necessary to perform a high quality neonatalechocardiographic examination, evaluate cardiac function, and recognizeabnormalities and defects. Practical Neonatal Echocardiography begins with an introduction to the basic principles of echocardiography and the ultrasound scanners commonly used at pediatric cardiac centers. Neonatal cardiac anatomy is clearly described through the use of 2-dimensional images andvideo clips. Subsequent chapters teach the assessment of cardiac function, bloodflow, shunts, physical defects, and abnormalities that may exist in the absence of adefect. Myocardial dysfunction, heart failure, shock, hypertension, cardiomyopathy, cyanosis, and more are discussed in detail with multiple illustrative cases. *Integrated throughout the chapters are 110 video clips, which when looped, will display a beating heart. These real-life cases will help readers hone their skills in recognizing defects in cardiac function and growth.*Covers essential principles of echocardiography with clear descriptions and illustrations*Describes common features of ultrasound scanners and how to use them

SAFs are given for uniform distributions of monoenergetic photons, electrons, alpha particles, and fission-spectrum neutrons over a range of relevant energies. Electron SAFs include both their collision and radiative components of energy deposition. SAF data are matched to source and target organs of the biokinetic models of the OIR publication series. The document further outlines the computational methodology and nomenclature for assessment of internal dose in a manner consistent with that used for nuclear medicine applications. Numerical data for particle specific and energy dependent SAFs are given in electronic format for numerical coupling to the respiratory tract, alimentary tract, and systemic biokinetic models of the OIR publication series.

R3,911 Discovery Miles 39 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book will be of interest to anyone who wants to use ultrasound to understand human physiology both in the clinical setting and the classroom. Tremendous advances in ultrasound technology have resulted in portable ultrasound systems that are easy to use, produce excellent images, and are affordable with quality hand-held and laptop-sized systems costing between $2K and $20K. These systems are now being used at the patient bedside or point of care by almost all medical and surgical specialities from primary care to orthopaedic surgery. These portable systems, especially the hand-held devices, are now being called the stethoscopes of the 21st century and will likely be used by many that are presently using stethoscopes including physicians, nurses, physician assistants, medics and other health professionals. Ultrasound began to be used in medical student education in the 1990s and is steadily becoming a common teaching tool for courses like anatomy and physiology. It is a visual, highly interactive learning tool that bridges the basic and clinical sciences and allows the learner to observe physiology principles in a living model. Ultrasound is also being used to teach other health professions students as well as undergraduate college students and high school students. Despite this interest there are no books available that provide an introduction to ultrasound and how it can be used to enhance the teaching of physiology. This e-book will do just that as well as offer "How to Scan" videos with example laboratory exercises to further engage learners.
