The New Learning Revolution - How Britain Can Lead the World in Learning, Education and Schooling (Paperback, Revised Edition):... The New Learning Revolution - How Britain Can Lead the World in Learning, Education and Schooling (Paperback, Revised Edition)
Gordon Dryden, Jeannette Voss
R286 Discovery Miles 2 860 Ships in 4 - 6 working days

This is the definitive book about the biggest changes in education, schooling and teaching since the school classroom was invented almost 300 years ago. The vision and power of the original "Learning Revolution" remains, but the authors now address current developments such as: how instant information and interactive technology are finally forcing a complete rethink of everything we've ever believed about education; how new interlocking networks are creating dramatic new models for learning; and how new teaching methods are revolutionizing schooling in pockets around the world. Dryden, the award-winning television and radio talk show host, is just completing a series of television programmes on new methods of learning and Vos is putting the finishing touches to a seven-year doctoral research project into the same subject. The combined power of these two dynamic authors is highly compelling!

Development of supply chain strategies has become a major growth industry in its own right; most organizations now see managing their supply chain as a key strategic issue. The main tenet of this book is that supply needs to be thought about as a dynamic strategic process, and not as a bureaucratic business function.

""

"Strategic Supply Management: principles, theories and practice" traces the development of purchasing and supply management from its origins as a tactical commercial function into a key strategic business process. Integrating conceptual models, including the strategic supply wheel, with a host of practical examples, the authors illuminate the philosophy, concepts and techniques of supply management. They also contrast the traditional, conventional concepts of purchasing and supply management with new ideas, radical concepts, and examples of interesting practice.

Designed to provide a comprehensive course structure for teaching and studying this wide-ranging and constantly developing topic, this book guides the reader through the subject with clarity and logic. Whether used as a course textbook or a source of reference, students and practitioners will find the authors' comprehensive overviews of the topics indispensable.

"Cousins et al have drawn from their extensive experience in industry, and crafted a book that provides deep contextual insights into why supply chains are the foundation for competitive strategy, the dynamics that drive economic change, and most importantly, the importance of relationships as the glue that keeps supply chains functioning properly. Executives and students will benefit from the frameworks, examples, and discussions inthis book, which should be on everyone who has an interest in global competitiveness' bookshelves."

Global Airlines - Competition in a transnational industry (Paperback, 3rd edition): Pat Hanlon Global Airlines - Competition in a transnational industry (Paperback, 3rd edition)
Pat Hanlon
R1,820 Discovery Miles 18 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Global Airlines: Competition in a Transnational Industry presents an overview of the changing scene in air transport covering current issues such as security, no frills airlines, 'open skies' agreements, the outcome of the recent downturn in economic activity and the emergence of transnational airlines, and takes a forward looking view of these challenges for the industry.
Since the publication of the second edition in 1999 major changes have occurred in the industry. The 'rules of the game' in air transport are now beginning to change; and it is time to take the story forward. This third edition contains nine new chapters and tackles the following issues amongst others:
* Security: The tragic events of 11 September 2001, followed by the war in Iraq, and the resultant heightened tensions over security and passenger safety.
* Financial instability: the cyclical downturn in economic activity has led some airlines to the verge of bankruptcy. Even some large well-established carriers are not immune from this. How can the industry look to survive?
* Attaining global reach: implications of transborder mergers, open skies agreements and the transatlantic Common Aviation area. Can full globalisation ever be reached?
* Low-cost carriers and e-commerce: as both increase, how much the industry re-structure and deal with issues associated with increased passenger traffic and decreased labour requirements?
* Airport capacity: Air traffic is estimated to grow at a long-term average annual rate of 5 per cent per annum. But many airports in many parts of the world are already reaching their capacity limits. How can this be overcome and are the environmental implications?
Usingup to date data and case studies from major international airlines such as United Airlines, British Airways, and Qantas amongst many others, Global Airlines provides a comprehensive insight into today's global airline industry.
* Addresses the critical issues in the development of the airline industry and considers options for airline strategies and government policies
* Updated to reflect recent developments including security issues, no frills airlines, 'open skies' agreements and the recent downturn in economic activity, and what this means for the future of the industry.
* Facts and theories are interwoven throughout the text

Introduction to Polymers (Paperback, 3rd Edition): Robert J Young, Peter A. Lovell Introduction to Polymers (Paperback, 3rd Edition)
Robert J Young, Peter A. Lovell
R796 Discovery Miles 7 960 Ships in 4 - 6 working days

Thoroughly updated, Introduction to Polymers, Third Edition presents the science underpinning the synthesis, characterization and properties of polymers. The material has been completely reorganized and expanded to include important new topics and provide a coherent platform for teaching and learning the fundamental aspects of contemporary polymer science.

New to the Third Edition

Part I

This first part covers newer developments in polymer synthesis, including ‘living’ radical polymerization, catalytic chain transfer and free-radical ring-opening polymerization, along with strategies for the synthesis of conducting polymers, dendrimers, hyperbranched polymers and block copolymers. Polymerization mechanisms have been made more explicit by showing electron movements.

Part II

In this part, the authors have added new topics on diffusion, solution behaviour of polyelectrolytes and field-flow fractionation methods. They also greatly expand coverage of spectroscopy, including UV visible, Raman, infrared, NMR and mass spectroscopy. In addition, the Flory–Huggins theory for polymer solutions and their phase separation is treated more rigorously.

Part III

A completely new, major topic in this section is multicomponent polymer systems. The book also incorporates new material on macromolecular dynamics and reptation, liquid crystalline polymers and thermal analysis. Many of the diagrams and micrographs have been updated to more clearly highlight features of polymer morphology.

Part IV

The last part of the book contains major new sections on polymer composites, such as nanocomposites, and electrical properties of polymers. Other new topics include effects of chain entanglements, swelling of elastomers, polymer fibres, impact behaviour and ductile fracture. Coverage of rubber-toughening of brittle plastics has also been revised and expanded.

While this edition adds many new concepts, the philosophy of the book remains unchanged. Largely self-contained, the text fully derives most equations and cross-references topics between chapters where appropriate. Each chapter not only includes a list of further reading to help readers expand their knowledge of the subject but also provides problem sets to test understanding, particularly of numerical aspects.

What is This Thing Called Science? (Paperback, 4th edition): Alan Chalmers What is This Thing Called Science? (Paperback, 4th edition)
Alan Chalmers
R998 R943 Discovery Miles 9 430 Save R55 (6%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A brand new edition of an internationally-renowned philosophy of science bestseller. Now well into its fourth decade, What is This Thing Called Science? has become something of a classic the world over, available in 19 languages. Each decade, Alan Chalmers has drawn on his experience as a teacher and researcher to improve and update the text. In his accessible style, Chalmers illuminates the major developments in the field of the philosophy of science over the past few years. The most significant feature of this fourth edition is the addition of an extensive postscript, in which Chalmers uses the results of his research into the history of atomism to illustrate and enliven key themes in the philosophy of science. Identifying the qualitative difference between knowledge of atoms as it figures in contemporary science and metaphysical speculations about atoms common in philosophy since the time of Democritus proves to be a highly revealing and instructive way to pinpoint key features of the answer to the question 'What is this thing called science?' This new edition ensures that the book holds its place as the leading introduction to the philosophy of science for the foreseeable future. 'Successive editions have retained and refined its clear, engaging and witty discussions of the most important topics in the field, incorporating the best new research in the field. This latest edition also adds a valuable layer of grounding in the history of science, particularly based on Chalmers' recent extensive research on the history of atomism'. Theologies In The Old Testament (Hardcover): Erhard S. Gerstenberger Theologies In The Old Testament (Hardcover)
Erhard S. Gerstenberger; Translated by John Bowden
R4,008 Discovery Miles 40 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a history of religion rather than a theological book. In the introduction, Erhard Gerstenberger argues that the Old Testament contains many different theologies and he pays attention to the context in which the Old Testament is studied. He follows this up with an outlined study of the history of Ancient Israel, and goes on to examine faith, cultic practices and ethics as illustrations of belief in God (or gods, or goddesses) in each of the different stages. The approach is essentially sociological with close attention paid to both archaeology and the biblical texts, and each chapter raises the issue of what these investigations mean for belief in the modern world.
