A hugely topical collection of essays from a cross-disciplinary group of leading academics focussing on the implications for an understanding of human identity in light of the current possibilities in medical science. The book brings together an international body of medical experts alongside philosophers, sociologists, theologians and ethicists in order to discuss these vital issues. The ensuing discussion will allow public debate to be more informed about the actual possibilities inherent in medical science, alongside a sophisticated treatment of ethical and theological issues. The result is a focused collection of essays that raises new and challenging questions.
The modern farmer is confronted with almost insurmountable problems such as rising costs, lower product prices and escalating interest rates on the purchase of farming land. These factors are forcing farmers to optimally develop their business acumen and managerial skills in order to manage their farming enterprises as economically as possible. This title contains the basic principles of financial farming management, analysis and control.
One of the leading texts in the field, The Economics of Recreation, Leisure and Tourism is the ideal introduction to the fundamentals of economics in these industries, helping you to pass an economics module as part of tourism, recreation, events or sport management degrees.
This much-needed title is an introductory text for novice researchers - undergraduate students or junior postgraduate students who are encountering research methodology for the first time. A number of additional features make this title resource for scholars, academics, researchers, psychologists, social workers, teachers and clients: It gives an overview of international perspectives on research methodology. It critically analyses germane questions such as, "What is the language of research" and "How does one pose the right research question?" It facilitates an understanding and application of theories, goals, methods and strategies in research. It examines the historical and philosophical underpinnings of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research and suggests how these three approaches may be used to conduct research.
Environmental Impact Assessment collates most of the existing important information regarding the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process in one compact volume. It follows the logical progression of an EIA using international best practice techniques and principles, and now includes the most up-to-date 2012 regulatory information. Environmental Impact Assessment sets a baseline for EIA in South Africa. It is the first BOOK on this topic written specifically for the South African context, although it is applicable to all developing countries. Environmental Impact Assessment was written for environmental professionals and students entering the field for the first time, but it will also provide practical advice for advanced students and experienced consultants working in related fields.
This book is a self contained course in electromagnetic theory suitable for senior physics and electrical engineering students as well as graduate students whose past has not prepared them well for books such as Jackson or Landau and Lifschitz. The text is liberally sprinkled with worked examples illustrating the application of the theory to various physical problems. This new edition features improved accuracy and readability, added and further clarified examples, plus additional sections on Schwarz-Christoffel mappings. Making the book more self sufficient, an appendix on orthogonal function expansions and the derivation of Bessel functions and Legendre polynomials as well as derivation of their generating functions are each included. The number of exercises has also been increased by 45 over the previous edition. This book stresses the unity of electromagnetic theory with electric and magnetic fields developed in parallel. SI units are used throughout and considerable use is made of tensor notation and the Levi-Cevita symbol. To more closely display the parallelism, extensive use is made of the scalar magnetic potential particularly in dealing with the Laplace and Poisson equation. 85 worked problems illustrate the theory. Conformal mappings are dealt with in some detail. Relevant mathematical material is provided in appendices. The authors investigate the evolution of thought on community development from a methodology and technique to a set of (often normative) principles. Based on an extensive literature study the book argues that the more recently evolved fashionable concepts such as participatory development, people-centred development and empowerment can all be traced to a 'community development' origin. They conclude that community development was not evil but that, in the hands of powerful people, it became a tool of marginalisation and disempowerment. Key issues on community development are introduced and explained by way of annotated case studies.
An unfortunate consequence of the restructuring of teacher education in South Africa over the past 15 years has been the virtual disappearance of history of education from tertiary programmes and a corresponding decline in the number of publications on the subject. But this is now changing; especially in postgraduate courses. A history of schooling in South Africa: method and context provides a perspective on the development of schooling for all of South Africa's diverse population groups, from pre-colonial times to present day, in as much detail as is possible in a single volume.

The Wiley Advantage

Vyfmylpaal bevat vyf van Deon Opperman se suksesvolste Afrikaanse dramas: "Boesman, my seun", "Magspel", "Donkerland", "Stille nag" en "More is ’n lang dag". Hy is ook die stigter van AFDA (The South African School of Motion Picture and Live Performance).
Bringing educational leadership and management together in the context of change is an enormous task for those educational managers, specifically school principals, who work and lead in our schools. Dealing with strategic, learner and financial management, school governance and instructional leadership, as well as managing and bringing about change and improvement in the school, can be challenging. School leadership in a changing context is about finding coherence between leadership dimensions, perspectives, approaches, practices and vision in a school-based management setting. This title deals with the school leader's discovering his or her unique identity in the changing policy environment, learning how leadership can relate meaningfully to the complexity of context and understanding how educational leadership can lead to educational outcomes. School leadership in a changing context is aimed at senior undergraduate BEd students, BEd Hons students, MEd in Education Management students, as well as ACE in leadership students.
While crime on the whole is a matter of grave concern in South Africa, crime involving juvenile offenders is particularly so and it is on the rise. Sexual offences among children are occurring more frequently, and children are increasingly being trafficked and used as sex workers or slaves. Despite specific laws having been promulgated to protect them, sexual abuse of children and neglect are rife, with many children growing up in a very unforgiving environment that never allows them the opportunity to develop morally according to the prescriptions of a democratic society. Child and youth misbehaviour in South Africa addresses the complex and poorly understood phenomenon of juvenile misbehaviour. It discusses and analyses various theories on the nature and causes of aberrant behaviour, and assesses them critically with regard to their applicability to South Africa. In order to understand the youth misbehaviour problem as it manifests in this country, it is essential that the position of youths be understood. Solutions may be found by considering the following: The difficulty in demarcating the position of children in South Africa; The local risk factors associated with juvenile misbehaviour; The effective processing and treatment of youthful offenders by the South African criminal justice system; Preventive measures based on constitutional guidelines. Child and youth misbehaviour in South Africa is aimed at enabling both practitioners and students to address the plight of the South African youth in a constructive way and so become part of creating a safer South Africa for its people.

The unit manager must be able to deal with a wide range of tasks in the course of the day. These could range from compiling a duty roster, writing a unit procedure, compiling an emergency plan, preparing an annual budget or answering a legal question. The unit manager must also be able to manage a team of healthcare professionals, be able to lead and motivate the team, and organise the unit so that it functions effectively and in line with the institution's vision and mission. In addition, the unit manager must be able to keep control of supplies and equipment in the unit, which must be kept in good working order and replaced when necessary. All of these aspects are covered in Introduction to health services management for the unit manager, fourth edition.
