In the context of widespread precarity and ongoing crises, it is no surprise ruins have captured much attention in recent years. This book is about a new kind of space, one that is deeply troubling for consumer society: the retail ruin. Jacob C. Miller bridges human geography, archaeology and critical urban studies to offer a starting point for conceptualizing retail ruins. Drawing on fieldnotes and photographs, Miller crafts a hauntological approach informed by the theories of Walter Benjamin and Jacques Derrida to more recent thinking on assemblage, spectacle and the politics of urban space.

Originally published in 1979. In this forcefully argued book, Milton Santos shows that contemporary explanations of urbanization and spatial organization in underdeveloped countries are inadequate. This failure is attributable to their origins in theories elaborated to explain the development of advanced Western societies. Santos' work provides the basis for the new theory which is so badly needed. He describes the urban economy in these countries in terms of two circuits of activity - an upper circuit consisting of those enterprises and structures which are based on modern technology and are oriented towards the advanced capitalist world, and a lower circuit comprised of more traditional processes and forms of exchange. The dialectical interaction of these two circuits is seen to generate the patterns of growth, forms of State intervention and, above all, the spatial organization characteristic of Third World economies. This was a revision and translation of L'Espace Partage (1975).

Originally published in 1979. Decision makers at all levels need sufficiently detailed information on regional economic structure in order to undertake consistent and comprehensive regional planning. A means is put forward here, elevating the impracticable regional input-output method, to that of an operational planning technique. This development represents a system which facilitates the examination both of the economic structure of individual regions in reasonable detail, and of the regional structure of the state economy. The technique, termed the Generation of Regional Input-Output Tables (GRIT), is designed for general use in the production of regional input-output tables, and other data sources contributing towards the holistic accuracy of the table, thereby providing accurate maximisation of input-output tables within a given budget constraint.

Spatial disorientation is of key relevance to our globalized world, eliciting complex questions about our relationship with technology and the last remaining vestiges of our animal nature. Viewed more broadly, disorientation is a profoundly geographical theme that concerns our relationship with space, places, the body, emotions, and time, as well as being a powerful and frequently recurring metaphor in art, philosophy, and literature. Originally published in 1984. Australia is a resource-rich country deriving a significant proportion of its export earnings from trade in these resources. At the same time, the country is young, sparsely populated beyond the coastal fringe, particularly in the resource-rich areas, and environmentally fragile. The consequences of resource exploitation in these areas have far-reaching policy implications. A range of these concerns is canvassed in this volume, encompassing the views of policy-makers, planners and academics. Five chapters address social and economic impacts ranging over manufacturing and tertiary industry, immigration and labour markets, employment and population and the provision of educational facilities. In the spatial context of the European Community, the author explores central issues by integrating the results of his own research with those of economists, geographers, economic historians and psychologists. Increased redevelopment, the dismantling of public housing, and increasing housing costs are forcing a shift in migration of lower income and transit dependent populations to the suburbs. These suburbs are often missing basic transportation, and strategies to address this are lacking. The ten years before this book was originally published in 1986 saw major restructuring in the economies of the developed world. This was often closely related to industrial development in newly industrializing and third world countries. This book examines the performance of these developing countries and includes studies of 'peripheral regions' - less developed regions within more advanced economies. The overall findings are that whilst some areas and countries have success stories to tell (such as Korea), many so-called newly industrializing countries and regions have had serious problems.

As suburban expansion declines, cities have become essential economic, cultural and social hubs of global connectivity.
