School of Errors - Rethinking School Safety in America (Paperback): David P. Perrodin School of Errors - Rethinking School Safety in America (Paperback)
David P. Perrodin; Foreword by Danny Woodburn
R587 Discovery Miles 5 870 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

School of Errors establishes another voice in the discussion of how to promote safe schools. It challenges the unchecked expansion of school fortification and questions the realized benefit of inter-agency collaboration during a sentinel event. This book offers an alternative to traumatizing simulations by providing clear options for improving school safety by the empirically-proven effective measures of leakage detection (preventive) and sensemaking (reactive). School of Errors restores the scientific method to school safety and clears a path through the media rhetoric fogging this vital topic.

Policing Nightlife - Security, Transgression and Urban Order (Paperback): Phillip Wadds Policing Nightlife - Security, Transgression and Urban Order (Paperback)
Phillip Wadds
R1,377 Discovery Miles 13 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Nightlife is a place of both real and imagined risk, a 'frontier' (Melbin 1978) where apparent freedom and transgression are closely linked, and where regulation of leisure and collective intoxication has been diffused throughout an expanding network of state and private actors. This book explores Sydney's contemporary night-time economy as the product of an intersection of both local and global transformations, as policing comes to incorporate more and more 'private' personnel empowered to regulate 'public' drinking and nightlife. Policing Nightlife focuses on the historical and social conditions, cultural meanings and regulatory controls that have shaped both public and private forms of policing and security in contemporary urban nightlife. In so doing, it reflects more broadly on global changes in the nature of contemporary policing and how aspects of neoliberalism and the ideal of the '24-hour city' have shaped policing, security and night-time leisure. Based on a decade of research and interviews with both police and doorstaff working in nightlife settings, it explores the effectiveness of policies governing policing and private security in the night-time economy in the context of media, political and public debates about regulation, and the gendered and highly masculine aspects of much of this work. An accessible and compelling read, this book will appeal to students and scholars of criminology, policing, sociology and those interested in understanding the debates surrounding security, policing and contemporary urban nightlife.

Logics of Genocide - The Structures of Violence and the Contemporary World (Paperback): Martin Shuster, Anne O'Byrne Logics of Genocide - The Structures of Violence and the Contemporary World (Paperback)
Martin Shuster, Anne O'Byrne
R1,404 Discovery Miles 14 040 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is concerned with the connection between the formal structure of agency and the formal structure of genocide. The contributors employ philosophical approaches to explore the idea of genocidal violence as a structural element in the world. Do mechanisms or structures in nation-states produce types of national citizens that are more susceptible to genocidal projects? There are powerful arguments within philosophy that in order to be the subjects of our own lives, we must constitute ourselves specifically as national subjects and organize ourselves into nation states. Additionally, there are other genocidal structures of human society that spill beyond historically limited episodes. The chapters in this volume address the significance-moral, ethical, political-of the fact that our very form of agency suggests or requires these structures. The contributors touch on topics including birthright citizenship, contemporary mass incarceration, anti-black racism, and late capitalism. Logics of Genocide will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working in philosophy, critical theory, genocide studies, Holocaust and Jewish studies, history, and anthropology.

Image-based Sexual Abuse - A Study on the Causes and Consequences of Non-consensual Nude or Sexual Imagery (Paperback): Nicola... Image-based Sexual Abuse - A Study on the Causes and Consequences of Non-consensual Nude or Sexual Imagery (Paperback)
Nicola Henry, Clare McGlynn, Asher Flynn, Kelly Johnson, Anastasia Powell, …
R1,372 Discovery Miles 13 720 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book investigates the causes and consequences of image-based sexual abuse in a digital era. Image-based sexual abuse refers to the taking or sharing of nude or sexual photographs or videos of another person without their consent. It includes a diversity of behaviours beyond that of "revenge porn", such as the secret trading of nude or sexual images online; "upskirting", "downblousing" and other "creepshots"; blackmail or "sextortion" scams; the use of artificial intelligence to construct "deepfake" pornographic videos; threats to distribute photographs and videos without consent; and the taking or sharing of sexual assault imagery. This book investigates the pervasiveness and experiences of these harms, as well as the raft of legal and non-legal measures that have been introduced to better respond to and prevent image-based sexual abuse. The book draws on groundbreaking empirical research, including surveys in three countries with over 6,000 respondents and over 100 victim-survivor and stakeholder interviews. Guided by theoretical frameworks from gender studies, sociology, criminology, law and psychology, the authors argue that image-based sexual abuse is more commonly perpetrated by men than women, and that perpetration is higher among some groups, including younger and sexuality minority men. Although the motivations of perpetrators vary, a dominant theme to emerge was that of power and control. The gendered nature of the abuse means that it is best understood as a "continuum of sexual violence" because victim-survivors often experience it as part of a broader pattern of gendered harassment, violence and abuse. Written in a clear and direct style, this book will appeal to students and scholars of criminology, sociology, law and psychology. Image-based Sexual Abuse is also an essential resource for activists, legal and policy practitioners, technology companies and victim-survivors seeking to understand the deeply complex nature of intimate-image sharing in a digital era.

Monica L. McCoy, Stefanie M. Keen
R7,663 Discovery Miles 76 630 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Child Abuse and Neglect examines the latest research on this important topic, discussing what it entails, how to recognize it, and how to report it. The book begins with an overview of child maltreatment including its history, a summary of the research, and the risk factors, before exploring issues of mandated reporting. It then considers different forms of maltreatment - physical abuse, neglect, psychological maltreatment, sexual abuse, fetal abuse, and Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome. The authors discuss incidence estimates and consequences, as well as resiliency, for each type of maltreatment, and then review legal issues including forensic interviewing. The book concludes by providing an overview of what happens to a child after a report is filed along with suggestions for preventing child maltreatment. This edition has been thoroughly updated throughout to cover the latest theory and research. Referencing the DSM-V, the book also features updated coverage of state and federal laws to reflect new legislation, and additional case studies covering real-world events such as the sexual abuse scandals within USA Gymnastics, the Boy Scouts of America, and the Southern Baptist Convention. Catastrophic School Violence - A New Approach to Prevention (Hardcover): Jared M. Scherz, Donna Scherz Catastrophic School Violence - A New Approach to Prevention (Hardcover)
Jared M. Scherz, Donna Scherz
R1,988 Discovery Miles 19 880 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book delves deep into school culture and the school shooter. The authors generate a more comprehensive picture of school violence including the personal, interpersonal, and environmental factors that help to generate a school serial killer. The authors introduce new type of violence classification system, which includes "retributive violence" as well as a new tool for schools to use in preventing catastrophe. This book provides the foundation for building an Early Warning Violence Prevention and Detection System for schools. Through a new concept of reverse profiling, the authors widen the perspective on the multiple causes of school violence, moving away from a static trait cluster or profile perspective. Increased attention to the processes, patterns, cycles, and other decompensation trends is the key to identifying schools which are vulnerable to violence and potential perpetrators. Awareness can be the best tool in prevention.

Childhood Sexual Abuse - A Reference Handbook, 2nd Edition (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): Karen L. Kinnear Childhood Sexual Abuse - A Reference Handbook, 2nd Edition (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
Karen L. Kinnear
R2,257 Discovery Miles 22 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work is an important new edition of a classic study-one of the few exhaustive examinations of childhood sexual abuse available-with 40 percent new material. Even though it is as old as human history, child sexual abuse has generally remained a dark and well-hidden secret. Only in the last few decades has it become a topic of open public debate and scientific research, and we still have more questions than answers. How often are accusations of sexual abuse legitimate, and how often are they the result of false memories? Can sexual offenders be cured, or will they ultimately re-offend? These are only a few of the difficult questions this volume seeks to answer. Childhood Sexual Abuse: A Reference Handbook explores the many ways we define child sexual abuse in the United States and in different parts of the world and how those differences are represented in U.S. and international laws. It summarizes what we know about how to intervene, treat, and prevent childhood sexual abuse effectively and tells the stories of individuals who have had a dramatic effect on the handling of childhood sexual abuse. For students, social workers, teachers, policymakers, parents, and concerned citizens, this work offers a one-stop, multifaceted discussion of one of the major issues facing children and their families. A chronology of important events in the history of child sexual abuse covers the various laws and how they've changed over the centuries (from religious laws allowing marriage to minor girls up through the latest laws relating to Internet issues), notable abuse cases, the formation of major anti-abuse organizations, and top scientific studies Excerpts from relevant U.S. and international laws and conventions

Securing Sex - Morality and Repression in the Making of Cold War Brazil (Hardcover): Benjamin A Cowan Securing Sex - Morality and Repression in the Making of Cold War Brazil (Hardcover)
Benjamin A Cowan
R2,923 Discovery Miles 29 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this history of right-wing politics in Brazil during the Cold War, Benjamin Cowan puts the spotlight on the Cold Warriors themselves. Drawing on little-tapped archival records, he shows that by midcentury, conservatives-individuals and organizations, civilian as well as military-were firmly situated in a transnational network of right-wing cultural activists. They subsequently joined the powerful hardline constituency supporting Brazil's brutal military dictatorship from 1964 to 1985. There, they lent their weight to a dictatorship that, Cowan argues, operationalized a moral panic that conflated communist subversion with manifestations of modernity, coalescing around the crucial nodes of gender and sexuality, particularly in relation to youth, women, and the mass media. The confluence of an empowered right and a security establishment suffused with rightist moralism created strongholds of anticommunism that spanned government agencies, spurred repression, and generated attempts to control and even change quotidian behavior. Tracking how limits to Cold War authoritarianism finally emerged, Cowan concludes that the record of autocracy and repression in Brazil is part of a larger story of reaction against perceived threats to traditional views of family, gender, moral standards, and sexuality-a story that continues in today's culture wars.

Historical Dialogue and the Prevention of Mass Atrocities (Paperback): Elazar Barkan, Constantin Goschler, James Waller Historical Dialogue and the Prevention of Mass Atrocities (Paperback)
Elazar Barkan, Constantin Goschler, James Waller
R1,365 Discovery Miles 13 650 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book brings together a diverse range of international voices from academia, policymaking and civil society to address the failure to connect historical dialogue with atrocity prevention discourse and provide insight into how conflict histories and historical memory act as dynamic forces, actively facilitating or deterring current and future conflict. Established on a variety of international case studies combining theoretical and practical points of view, the book envisions an integrated understanding of how historical dialogue can inform policy, education, and the practice of atrocity prevention. In doing so, it provides a vital basis for the development of preventive policies sensitive to the importance of conflict histories and for further academic study on the topic. It will be of interest to all scholars and students of history, psychology, peace studies, international relations and political science.

The Development of Aggression and Violence in Adolescence (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Robert F. Marcus The Development of Aggression and Violence in Adolescence (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Robert F. Marcus
R3,066 Discovery Miles 30 660 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book highlights the developmental changes in aggression and violence during adolescence from a uniquely psychological perspective. Developmental changes and risk factors as direct causes for violence and psychopathy have started to receive increased recognition over the last few years, and in this volume Marcus charts these changes against criminological activity. A meta-theoretical model consisting of developmental, personality, and situational factors which are common, or unique, to each form of aggression and violence are offered with research support. Empirically supported by rigorous data studies, this innovative work goes a long way towards addressing the methods of prevention by which we might lower the frequency and prevalence of aggression and violence. Well-researched and timely in its findings, this book will be of special interest to scholars of violence and crime, as well as developmental psychologists.

Assault on the Small Screen - Representations of Sexual Violence on Prime Time Television Dramas (Hardcover): Molly Ann Magestro Assault on the Small Screen - Representations of Sexual Violence on Prime Time Television Dramas (Hardcover)
Molly Ann Magestro
R3,396 R2,393 Discovery Miles 23 930 Save R1,003 (30%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Over the last few decades, television programs have attempted to depict some of the more troubling elements of society with a more conscientious approach. Issues that networks were once reluctant to broadcast-such as sexual abuse, sexual assault, and rape-have become frequent plot points for many popular shows. Narratives that portray important social issues could potentially affect the ways individual viewers understand such incidents in the real world, so it is important to pay close and critical attention to the stories about rape that are broadcast to mass audiences. In Assault on the Small Screen: Representations of Sexual Violence on Prime Time Television Dramas, Molly Ann Magestro examines the ways in which police and legal dramas on network and cable channels portray rape narratives. In this discussion, the author focuses on eight successful shows-NCIS, Criminal Minds, CSI, The Closer, Rizzoli & Isles, Dexter, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, and The Good Wife. Each chapter offers a close reading and analysis of how one or more of the shows represent rape narratives and rape victims in ways that more or less address feminist understandings of rape and rape culture. The arguments in each chapter explore the specific narrative content of individual series rather than a single critical approach. Each of the eight shows considered within the book is the focus of its own argument, as the representations of rape narratives on television are as complex as issues surrounding rape can be in the real world. In a time when rape narratives are frequently making headlines, taking the time to examine and understand the messages broadcast by a medium as ubiquitous as television serves an important role in developing an understanding of rape culture. A significant step toward this understanding, Assault on the Small Screen will be of interest to scholars of film and television, media studies, gender studies, criminology, and sociology.

The Minds of Mass Killers - Understanding and Interrupting the Pathway to Violence (Paperback): P. Shavaun Scott The Minds of Mass Killers - Understanding and Interrupting the Pathway to Violence (Paperback)
P. Shavaun Scott
R732 Discovery Miles 7 320 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Evidence is clear: public mass killings are becoming more common and deadly over time. Though the chances of being harmed or killed in a mass shooting are slim, each incident affects the public's sense of safety and how we go about our daily lives. There are many myths and falsehoods concerning mass murderers. As a result, the public lacks reliable knowledge about the reasons behind mass killings, preventing the development of comprehensive strategies to mitigate the violence. Written by a mental health therapist with thirty years of research experience in criminal psychology, this book clarifies the realities of mass killings. Synthesizing cutting-edge research on psychological profiling, it provides a foundation for understanding the "pathway to violence" identified in the personal histories of many mass murderers. Drawing from criminology, neuroscience and developmental and social psychology, the author makes the case that we are all are capable of creating a safer society.

Downtown Juarez - Underworlds of Violence and Abuse (Hardcover): Howard Campbell Downtown Juarez - Underworlds of Violence and Abuse (Hardcover)
Howard Campbell
R2,422 Discovery Miles 24 220 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

At least 200,000 people have died in Mexico's so-called drug war, and the worst suffering has been in Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas. How did it get so bad? After three decades studying that question, Howard Campbell doesn't believe there is any one answer. Misguided policies, corruption, criminality, and the borderland economy are all factors. But none of these reasons explain how violence in downtown Juarez has become heartbreakingly "normal." A rigorous yet moving account, Downtown Juarez is informed by the sex workers, addicts, hustlers, bar owners, human smugglers, migrants, and down-and-out workers struggling to survive in an underworld where horrifying abuses have come to seem like the natural way of things. Even as Juarez's elite northeast section thrives on the profits of multinational corporations, and law-abiding citizens across the city mobilize against crime and official malfeasance, downtown's cantinas, barrios, and brothels are tyrannized by misery. Campbell's is a chilling perspective, suggesting that, over time, violent acts feed off each other, losing their connection to any specific cause. Downtown Juarez documents this banality of evil-and confronts it-with the stories of those most affected.

Reclaiming Lives from Sexual Violence - Understanding Shame through Innovative Narrative Therapy (Paperback): Tim Donovan, Dale... Reclaiming Lives from Sexual Violence - Understanding Shame through Innovative Narrative Therapy (Paperback)
Tim Donovan, Dale Johns
R971 Discovery Miles 9 710 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book takes an innovative approach to using narrative therapy in counselling people who have been subject to childhood sexual abuse. Reclaiming Lives from Sexual Violence presents an illustrative case study of the authors, Tim the therapist in consultation with Dale the client, who was sexually abused as a child by a clergy member. The book is unique in documenting their therapeutic work using transcripts taken directly from their sessions together. This narrative approach invites the reader to consider different ways of engaging in therapy in order to challenge the dominant social discourses around masculinity and shame. Looking at shame from a position of value awareness rather than a deficit perspective, this book extends counselling to consider the individual experience as political and one that must be shared outside the one-to-one therapy environment. This will be an essential resource for beginning or established therapists and practitioners working with clients who have been victims of sexual violence.
