Reclaiming Lives from Sexual Violence - Understanding Shame through Innovative Narrative Therapy (Paperback): Tim Donovan, Dale... Reclaiming Lives from Sexual Violence - Understanding Shame through Innovative Narrative Therapy (Paperback)
Tim Donovan, Dale Johns
R971 Discovery Miles 9 710 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book takes an innovative approach to using narrative therapy in counselling people who have been subject to childhood sexual abuse. Reclaiming Lives from Sexual Violence presents an illustrative case study of the authors, Tim the therapist in consultation with Dale the client, who was sexually abused as a child by a clergy member. The book is unique in documenting their therapeutic work using transcripts taken directly from their sessions together. This narrative approach invites the reader to consider different ways of engaging in therapy in order to challenge the dominant social discourses around masculinity and shame. Looking at shame from a position of value awareness rather than a deficit perspective, this book extends counselling to consider the individual experience as political and one that must be shared outside the one-to-one therapy environment. This will be an essential resource for beginning or established therapists and practitioners working with clients who have been victims of sexual violence.

Aggression in Pornography - Myths and Realities (Paperback): Eran Shor, Kimberly Seida Aggression in Pornography - Myths and Realities (Paperback)
Eran Shor, Kimberly Seida
R1,393 Discovery Miles 13 930 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Aggression in Pornography focusses on the issue of violence in mainstream pornography and examines what we know, what we think we know, and what are some surprising research findings and insights about the place of violence within pornography today. The authors first review the modern pornography industry, theoretical claims about pornography as violence, and the ways in which aggression has been defined and measured in previous research. Next, they review the findings of empirical research on violent content in pornographic materials and the potential effects of such content on audiences . The main part of the book relies on systematically collected empirical data, as the authors analyze the content of hundreds of pornographic videos as well as more than a hundred interviews with men and women who regularly watch pornography. These analyses provide surprising insights regarding the prevalence of and trends in violent content within mainstream pornography, the popularity of violent and non-violent content among viewers, and variations in aggression by race and sexual orientation. As such, Aggression in Pornography will be of interest to students and researchers in sociology, gender and sexuality studies, and media and film studies, as well as to wider audiences who are interested in today's pornography industry and to policymakers looking to devise empirically driven policies regarding this industry and its potential effects.

Love, Sex and Psychotherapy in a Post-Romantic Era (Paperback): Del Loewenthal Love, Sex and Psychotherapy in a Post-Romantic Era (Paperback)
Del Loewenthal
R1,355 Discovery Miles 13 550 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

How do cultural changes such as the increasing lustful possibilities of our liquid modernity affect 'romantic' values as psychotherapists and counsellors - and, in turn, affect how they work through their clients' relationships? Do they embody values from a previous era that are inappropriate for the era we are in now, which some term 'post-romantic'? For example, do they really privilege monogamous relationships? There again, do those psychotherapists who advocate polygamy really want others to legitimize their own desire to have affairs? How wary should one be of accepting such prevailing theories as Freud's nuclear family romance and his 'ordinary unhappiness'? Is anyone value-free regarding romanticism/post-romanticism and should they be? Is 'to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part' still an ideal worth working towards or more an ideological imprisonment? This book seeks to explore recent research on how notions of romanticism and post-romanticism affect therapeutic practices. Love, Sex and Psychotherapy in a Post-Romantic Era is a significant new contribution to psychotherapy, and will be a great resource for prospective and current clients, trainee and professional therapists, academics, researchers, and advanced students of Psychology, Psychotherapy, Philosophy and Human Behaviour. This book was originally published as a special issue of the European Journal of Psychotherapy & Counselling.

Trauma and Repair - Confronting Segregation and Violence in America (Hardcover): Annie Stopford Trauma and Repair - Confronting Segregation and Violence in America (Hardcover)
Annie Stopford; Foreword by William Julius Wilson
R2,397 Discovery Miles 23 970 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Trauma and Repair: Confronting segregation and violence in America is an interview-based interdisciplinary exploration of complex trauma in specific low-income communities and neighborhoods in Baltimore, Oakland, New Orleans and Elaine (Arkansas). The author's discussion and extensive analysis draws on insights from diverse fields - sociology, public health, history, and legal studies, as well as her own profession of clinical psychoanalysis. Moving fluidly between respondents' narratives about their lives on one hand and clinical and academic perspectives on trauma and inequality on the other, a picture emerges of multidimensional and intergenerational trauma with multiple sources, including prolonged economic injustice and repeated exposure to community violence. Eminent Harvard sociologist William Julius Wilson writes that Stopford's book provides the most compelling case for acknowledging not only the cumulative economic, social and cultural effects of living in segregated and impoverished neighborhoods, but also the physical and psychological suffering caused by exposure to constant and chronic dangers, including the damaging health consequences of early childhood trauma that can span generations. Written in an accessible and engaging style, with an emphasis on interviewees' lived experience and insights, this original study promises to be a vital addition to the literature on inequality and poverty in the United States. Trauma and Repair will engage readers in diverse academic disciplines including sociology, psychology, public health, history, and legal studies. Readers in the wider public seeking to better understand the complex toxic forces confronting residents of distressed neighborhoods in American cities and towns will also find this original study informative, accessible and fascinating.

Holding Your Square - Masculinities, streetlife and violence (Paperback): Christopher Mullins Holding Your Square - Masculinities, streetlife and violence (Paperback)
Christopher Mullins; Foreword by Jodie Miller
R1,457 Discovery Miles 14 570 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book is about the meanings of masculinities within the social networks of the streets of an American city (St Louis, Missouri), and how these shaped perceptions and enactments of violence. Based on a large number of interviews with offenders the author provides a rich description of life on the streets, contextualizing criminal violence within this deviant subculture, and with a specific focus on issues of gender. The book provides one of the most detailed descriptions yet of the forms masculinity takes in disadvantages communities in the United States. It establishes how street based gender identity motivated and guided men through violent encounters, exploring how men's relationships with women and their families instigated violence. One key issue addressed is why men resorted to violence in certain situations and not in others, exploring the range of choices open to them and how these opportunities were interpreted. The book makes a major contribution to the study of the relationship between masculinities and violence, making use of a much larger sample than elsewhere.

Moral Crusades in an Age of Mistrust - The Jimmy Savile Scandal (Hardcover): F. Furedi Moral Crusades in an Age of Mistrust - The Jimmy Savile Scandal (Hardcover)
F. Furedi
R1,064 Discovery Miles 10 640 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Moral Crusades in an Age of Mistrust examines the sociological meaning of the sudden transformation of Jimmy Savile, the cultural icon, into the personification of evil. The epidemic of scandals unleashed by the Savile Scandal highlights the precarious status of relations of trust. The rapid escalation of this crisis offers insights into the relationship between anxieties about childhood and the wider moral order. This exploration of the emergence of a moral crusade explains why western society has become so uncomfortable with the exercise of authority. This is a work of public sociology that seeks to explore the social dimensions of a cultural drama as it unfolds. Through situating this scandal in a wider historical perspective this study outlines the distinctive features of a 21st century moral crusade.

Anarchy in Athens - An Ethnography of Militancy, Emotions and Violence (Paperback): Nicholas Apoifis Anarchy in Athens - An Ethnography of Militancy, Emotions and Violence (Paperback)
Nicholas Apoifis
R754 Discovery Miles 7 540 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Athenian anarchist and anti-authoritarian milieu's public protests and battles against the Greek state, police and other capitalist institutions are prolific and highly visible. Away from the intensity of the street-protests and the glare of mainstream media, however, its militants implement anarchist practices whose outcomes are less visible. They are feeding the hungry and poor, protecting migrants from fascist beatings and trying to carve out an autonomous political, social and cultural space. Activists within this movement share politics centred on hostility to the capitalist state and all forms of domination, hierarchy and discrimination. Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork amongst Athenian anarchists and anti-authoritarians, Anarchy in Athens unravels the internal complexities within this milieu and provides a better understanding of the forces that give the space its shape. -- .

Feminist Solutions for Ending War (Hardcover): Megan MacKenzie, Nicole Wegner Feminist Solutions for Ending War (Hardcover)
Megan MacKenzie, Nicole Wegner
R3,035 R2,124 Discovery Miles 21 240 Save R911 (30%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

'War is a man's game,' or so goes the saying. Whether this is true or not, patriarchal capitalism is certainly one of the driving forces behind war in the modern era. So can we end war with feminism? This book argues that this is possible, and is in fact already happening. Each chapter provides a solution to war using innovative examples of how feminist and queer theory and practice inform pacifist treaties, movements and methods, from the international to the domestic spheres. The contributors propose a range of solutions that include arms abolition, centring Indigenous knowledge, economic restructuring, and transforming how we 'count' civilian deaths. Ending war requires challenging complex structures, but the solutions found in this edition have risen to this challenge. By thinking beyond the violence of the capitalist patriarchy, this book makes the powerful case that the possibility of life without war is real.

The Victim's Voice in the Sexual Misconduct Crisis - Identity, Credibility, and Proof (Paperback): Mary L. Schuster The Victim's Voice in the Sexual Misconduct Crisis - Identity, Credibility, and Proof (Paperback)
Mary L. Schuster
R1,050 Discovery Miles 10 500 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Victim's Voice in the Sexual Misconduct Crisis investigates how a victim's voice, identity, credibility, and proof are challenged or established in the current sexual misconduct crisis. Using communication and rhetorical analysis, gender studies, and law and society perspectives, Mary Schuster examines concerns such as victim impact statements offered in sentencing hearings of convicted offenders, due process and Title IX requirements in campus sexual assault investigations, and laws and Title VII standards governing workplace sexual harassment complaints. Schuster also analyzes the testimony offered in the 1991 and 1998 U.S. Senate Judiciary Hearings regarding the Supreme Court nominations of Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh, social movements such as #Me Too, and global activists' efforts to challenge gender stereotypes and hierarchies. This book argues that we cannot outlaw or legislate away sexual misconduct, but must instead focus on cultural, social, and systemic changes in order to change the current climate. Moreover, the author argues for zero tolerance for sexual misconduct, but recommends a gradation of punishment or sanctions for offenders, offering examples of successful educational and therapeutic efforts to alter misconceptions regarding sexual misconduct. Scholars of gender studies, communication, legal studies, and rhetoric will find this book particularly useful.

Dark Ideas - How Neo-Nazi and Violent Jihadi Ideologues Shaped Modern Terrorism (Paperback): Travis Morris Dark Ideas - How Neo-Nazi and Violent Jihadi Ideologues Shaped Modern Terrorism (Paperback)
Travis Morris
R1,227 Discovery Miles 12 270 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Dark Ideas is the first book of its kind to show how ideas have transformed violent extremism over the past six decades. Certain violent jihadi and neo-Nazi innovations have now become accepted practices by groups and individuals, yet they are rarely examined from this perspective. This book comparatively examines some of these strategic and tactical ideas in context. Innovations such as how to weaponize thoughts, create new forms of violence, or shift targets advance terrorism studies into the realm of violent extremist doctrine. Each chapter examines the most influential violent jihadi or neo-Nazi ideologue behind an innovation, the context from which it originated, and how it transitioned from idea to action. The author concludes with some recommendations for policymakers and experts in the field.

Investigating Sexual Assault Cases (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Arthur S. Chancellor Investigating Sexual Assault Cases (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Arthur S. Chancellor
R4,522 Discovery Miles 45 220 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Investigating Sexual Assault Cases, Second Edition serves as an essential textbook for courses in investigating rape and sexual assault. As with the first edition, this second edition includes the latest research and techniques in coverage of victimology, offender typology, investigative techniques, interviewing, and legal implications. This new, second edition includes chapters on child victims and molestation, sexual homicides as potentially staged events, grooming, interviewing techniques, and same-sex, elder, and special populations as victims of sexual assault. The book fills a current void in the body of literature on the topics of rape and sex crime investigation. Many previous writings, while informative, do not address all the investigative processes necessary for an investigation to be thorough and complete. By providing a fresh approach to the topic, the author aims to augment those writings and, ultimately, improving the reader' awareness by being much more attuned to the needs of-and taking investigative cures from-the victim. Key Features: Outlines the complete investigative process for sexual assault cases, from evidence collection and interviews to court and legal proceedings Addresses victims and victimology, offender typology, the importance of the investigative interviewing process, and working with attorneys Includes new chapters on grooming, sexual homicides, SAFE examinations, and child-specific interviewing techniques Added coverage looks at same-sex crimes, crimes against men, elder victims, and assault of vulnerable populations In addition to being used in coursework in Forensic Science and Criminal justice programs, Investigating Sexual Assault Cases, Second Edition will serve as an essential reference for police detectives, criminal and death investigators, legal professionals, sexual assault nurses, and those who provide health, and mental health, services to populations experiencing sexual assault.

A Southern Criminology of Violence, Youth and Policing - Governing Insecurity in Urban Brazil (Paperback): Roxana Pessoa... A Southern Criminology of Violence, Youth and Policing - Governing Insecurity in Urban Brazil (Paperback)
Roxana Pessoa Cavalcanti
R1,367 Discovery Miles 13 670 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A Southern Criminology of Violence, Youth and Policing examines public experiences of insecurity and the social impacts of security programmes that aim to address violence in Brazil. This book contributes to the emerging field of southern criminology by engaging with the perils faced by people living in 'favelas' in Brazil and critically investigating the discourse of state actors. It combines original ethnographic data with critical analysis to expand understandings of violence and control in urban and postcolonial contexts. This study challenges dominant practices and notions of security and control. Its objective is to decolonise knowledge and shed light on issues relating to policing, coercion, and the great socioeconomic, historical and spatial inequalities that shape the lives of millions of people in the Global South. The findings of this book expose the exacerbation of social problems by the expansion of the penal and crime industry, unsettling the applicability and universalism of mainstream managerial criminology. The evidence reveals that new modes of securitisation have not addressed long-standing issues of sexism, racism, classism and brutalisation in the police. Moreover, through the increasing use of methods of control and incarceration, security programmes have failed to prevent diverse forms of violence and challenge the expansion of organised crime. Instead they have exacerbated the inequalities that affect the most marginalised populations. Written in a clear and direct style, this book will appeal to students and scholars in criminology, sociology, cultural studies, social theory and those interested in learning about the social injustices that exists in the Global South.

Crime, Punishment, and Video Games (Hardcover): Kristine Levan, Steven Downing Crime, Punishment, and Video Games (Hardcover)
Kristine Levan, Steven Downing
R2,291 Discovery Miles 22 910 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Moving beyond discussions of potential linkages between violence and video games, Crime, Punishment, and Video Games examines a broad range of issues related to the representation of crime and deviance within video games and the video game subculture. The context of justice is discussed with respect to traditional criminal justice agencies, but also expanded throughout to include issues related to social justice. The text also presents the potential cultural, social, and economic impact of video games. Considering the significant number of video game players, from casual to competitive players, these issues have become even more salient in recent years. Regardless of whether someone considers themselves a gamer, video games are undoubtedly relevant to modern society, and this text discusses how the shift in gaming has impacted our perceptions of deviance, crime, and justice. The authors explore past, present and future manifestations of these connections, considering how the game industry, policy makers, and researchers can work toward a better understanding of how and why video games are an important area of study for criminologists and sociologists, and how games will present new promises and challenges in the years to come.

Engendered Death - Pennsylvania Women Who Kill (Hardcover): Joseph W. Laythe Engendered Death - Pennsylvania Women Who Kill (Hardcover)
Joseph W. Laythe
R2,396 Discovery Miles 23 960 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Engendered Death: Pennsylvania Women Who Kill is an historical and interdisciplinary study of women who kill in Pennsylvania from the 18th century to the present. It is not an examination of what motivates women to kill, although the reader may deduce that from the case studies included. Instead, it is an examination of how society perceives women who kill and how the gender-lens is applied to them throughout the legal process in the media and in the courtroom. What makes this work particularly unique is its combination of both scholarly analysis and narrative case studies. As such, it will appeal to both the scholar and the reader of true-crime non-fiction. If we are to recognize the complex variables at play in all criminal offenses, we will need to understand that the laws of a community, its social values, its politics, economics, and even geography play a factor in what laws are enforced and against whom they are enforced. The decision to define and label certain behaviors and certain people was based on social, political, and economic considerations of each community. Thus, the commission of murder by a woman in Arizona may have a variety of factors associated with it that are not present in the case of a woman who murdered her husband in Maine. This study, in part because of the volume of cases and in part to limit the variables affecting the cases, has limited its scope of women killers to the state of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania is the ideal state to study because of its long and stable legal and political traditions, its historically diverse population, and the large number of newspapers that will help us gauge the public's view of women and women who kill. By limiting our scope to one state, we know that the legal definitions are fairly consistent for all of the women during a certain period and we can more easily identify the shifts in social values regarding women, homicide, and so forth.

Violent Extremism - A Primer for Mental Health Practitioners (Hardcover): Caroline Logan Violent Extremism - A Primer for Mental Health Practitioners (Hardcover)
Caroline Logan
R4,171 Discovery Miles 41 710 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This edited book presents international perspectives on the role of mental health problems in understanding and managing the risk of violent extremism. The chapters included in this book address two themes. First, they describe the research findings on the nature and prevalence of the range of mental health problems (psychosis, personality disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression, autism spectrum disorders) in young people and adults who have in the past, committed acts of violence motivated at least in part by extremist ideologies, or who have attempted or threatened such acts, or who for other reasons are thought to be at risk of doing so. Second, the chapters examine what is known about the relationship - or the functional link - between mental health problems and violent extremism. The focus of this book is on clinical practice and understanding the nature of the challenge faced by practitioners and their response to it. It will therefore be of interest to mental health practitioners, service managers and commissioners, and policy makers with a remit to understand and mitigate risk of radicalisation and violent extremism. The chapters in this book were originally published in The Journal of Forensic Psychiatry & Psychology.

Regarding Tilly - Conflict, Power, and Collective Action (Paperback): Maria J. Funes Regarding Tilly - Conflict, Power, and Collective Action (Paperback)
Maria J. Funes
R1,135 Discovery Miles 11 350 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Studying Charles Tilly (1929-2008), American sociologist, historian and political scientist, is essential for understanding political change and social conflict. His research focuses on how grassroots populations, through different forms of collective action, influence historical events by trying to improve the conditions of people's lives. This book is not only an homage to Tilly, but is also aimed at understanding and applying his thought. In each chapter, the authors, experts on Tilly's work, examine his concepts, theories, and methodological contributions, providing a richer understanding of them. In addition, this book is very contemporary. From the beginning of this century, mainly from 2011, important popular mobilizations, such as the Arab Spring and 15-M or "los indignados" (the indignant movement in Spain), gradually spread to other countries (the US, Yemen, Israel, etc.) in successive "Occupy" movements. The political mobilization of the grassroots movements are undergoing a resurgence, a process that Tilly would have wanted to study. This book can be a good guide for analyzing and understanding these movements.

Andries du Toit
R300 R277 Discovery Miles 2 770 Save R23 (8%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

One summer morning, Cape Town academic Andries Du Toit remonstrates mildly with a white man who is being rude to a black waitress in the cafeteria of his local health club. A few weeks later he finds himself sprawled on his back with a fractured cheekbone, blood pooling in the back of his throat, the target of payback from one of the city's most feared gangsters.

What just happened?

Following the threads that radiate out from his personal experience of violence, Du Toit traces the events and the decisions that brought him to that fateful confrontation. What ensues is a journey of discovery that forces him to confront his own place and complicity in a country still traumatised by racial violence - and to ask/explore what is required by the work of healing and repair.
