Sex, Gay Men and AIDS (Paperback): Peter Davies Sex, Gay Men and AIDS (Paperback)
Peter Davies
R1,612 Discovery Miles 16 120 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is a major empirical study of sexual behaviour in the UK. It is based on the findings of project SIGMA - whch is the major British initiative in the AIDS field, funded by the Department of Health and the Medical Research Council. Using in-depth qualitative analysis, the authors have developed new theories of sexuality. They have collected detailed information from over 1000 men in high-risk categories and examined their behavioural changes in response to HIV/AIDS over a four year period 1987-1991. The book presents the latest research on knowledge of HIV, attitudes to AIDS and the uptake of safer sex practices. It reports on the sexual lives of gay men in England and Wales against the backdrop of the HIV epidemic.

The Politics and Anti-Politics of Social Movements - Religion and AIDS in Africa (Paperback): Marian Burchardt, Amy Patterson,... The Politics and Anti-Politics of Social Movements - Religion and AIDS in Africa (Paperback)
Marian Burchardt, Amy Patterson, Louise Mubanda Rasmussen
R1,136 Discovery Miles 11 360 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book explores the nature, significance and consequences of the religious activism surrounding AIDS in Africa. While African religion was relatively marginal in inspiring or contributing to AIDS activism during the early days of the epidemic, this situation has changed dramatically. In order to account for these changes, contributors provide answers to pressing questions. How does the entrance of religion into public debates about AIDS affect policymaking and implementation, church-state relations, and religion itself? How do religious actors draw on and reconfigure forms of transnational connectivity? How do resource flows from development and humanitarian aid that religious actors may access then affect relationships of power and authority in African societies? How does religious mobilization on AIDS reflect contestation over identity, cultural membership, theology, political participation, and citizenship? Addressing these questions, the authors draw on social movement theories to explore the role of religious identities, action frames, political opportunity structures, and resource mobilization in African religions' reaction to the AIDS epidemic. The book's findings are rooted in fieldwork conducted in Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Ghana, and Mozambique, among a variety of religious organizations. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Canadian Journal of African Studies.

HIV Scale-Up and the Politics of Global Health (Paperback): Nora Kenworthy, Richard Parker HIV Scale-Up and the Politics of Global Health (Paperback)
Nora Kenworthy, Richard Parker
R1,107 Discovery Miles 11 070 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The global expansion of HIV programming (HIV "scale-up") and the growth of global health in the past decade reshaped politics, power, civic relations, and citizen subjectivities in countries across the globe. This book draws on interdisciplinary research from numerous sites in the Global South to examine the political dimensions of HIV and global health programming. The chapters reflect extensive methodological diversity and geographic range, yet exhibit striking resonance with the book's core themes. Collectively, the authors paint a complex global portrait of a unique period in the social history of HIV, as the pandemic enters its fourth decade, and the global response reaches its peak. The book contemplates "scale-up" (and, subsequently, "scale-down") as an object of analysis and an historical shift in the politics of response to global crisis. Ultimately, HIV/AIDS campaigns provide a template for the broader expansion of global health projects and institutions. These transnational shifts and expansions necessitate further critical evaluations across social science and public health disciplines. By collecting diverse perspectives on the political legacies of HIV and global health, this book provides a unique history of the present, cataloguing emerging practices and policies that will have long-term social impacts. This book was originally published as a special issue of Global Public Health.

AIDS: Individual, Cultural And Policy Dimensions (Hardcover): Peter Aggleton, Peter Davies, Graham Hart AIDS: Individual, Cultural And Policy Dimensions (Hardcover)
Peter Aggleton, Peter Davies, Graham Hart
R4,319 Discovery Miles 43 190 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In February 1989, the 3rd conference on Social Aspects of AIDS took place at South Bank Polytechnic. Social researchers working in psychology, socio logy, anthropology and education were represented, along with health care workers and members of statutory and voluntary organisations. The confe rence's themes emphasised the individual, cultural and policy dimen sions of HIV disease, and under these broad headings a wide range of paper s were given. This book contains many of the papers given at this conference as well as a number of additional contributions. The book is representative of a range of research currently under way. Some of the chapters are empir ical in their emphasis, some are more concerned with reporting on parti cular health education and health policy interventions, and some begin to develop a critique of some of the assumptions that operate in and aroun d contemporary social research agendas.

M.Sandra Wood, Jeffrey T. Huber, Mary L. Gillaspy
R1,166 Discovery Miles 11 660 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

HIV/AIDS and HIV/AIDS-Related Terminology: A Means of Organizing the Body of Knowledge offers an adaptable and extensive framework for organizing the ever-expanding number of resources on the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It lays down the groundwork upon which future blocks of information can be placed. As new information becomes available, it can be integrated into this system without rearranging the information already stored. This saves the time and money associated with revising a less flexible existing system. The book's instructions for use and taxonomic classification system make it easy to use. HIV/AIDS and HIV/AIDS-Related Terminology is designed for use in any setting where HIV/AIDS healthcare or information services are provided. It acts as a guide to available resources and illustrates how to acquire the most up-to-date information. At the same time, it moves beyond the more general focus on the clinical, legal, and medical ramifications of HIV/AIDS to the development of an interdisciplinary cataloging system that includes all issues and topics associated with the disease. This invaluable reference tool leaves no rock unturned. It addresses every conceivable facet of the epidemic, from the psychological to the religious and from the economic to the social. Any organizations or institutions concerned with the collection, creation, management, and dissemination of HIV/AIDS-related materials will find this book an essential for their libraries. Practical and comprehensive, HIV/AIDS and HIV/AIDS-Related Terminology addresses a full range of topics, including: prevention and education epidemiology and transmission treatment funding opportunities health policy HIV/AIDS and the fine artsHIV/AIDS and HIV/AIDS-Related Terminology is the first book to provide a method for grappling with the vast scope of information on the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Its organic structure is designed to accommodate new knowledge as it becomes available, while it maximizes access to existing information in a variety of formats.

Loretta Finnegan, Stephen Kandall
R1,607 Discovery Miles 16 070 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This proposed book draws on the expertise of 35 experts in the field of Addiction Medicine to provide the reader with a current and comprehensive view of addiction as related to women, pregnancy, newborns, infants and children. The volume begins by placing current attitudes towards addicted women in a historical context, and continues with contributions on the relationship of gender to substance abuse research, addiction as a general health issue in women, and ethical dilemmas faced when approaching drug use during pregnancy. The volume discusses high-risk pregnancies and HIV infection related to maternal drug abuse. It details specific pharmacotherapy such as methadone and buprenorphine, and assesses society's punitive view toward illicit drug using women. Finally, the book describes outcomes of newborns, infants and children born following intrauterine drug exposure. Health providers in many related disciplines, specialists in Addiction Medicine, social workers and ethicists are among those who will gain insight into the complex interdisciplinary matrix of abuse in women, its unique relationship to pregnancy, and its impact on drug-exposed children. This book was published as a special issue in the Journal of Addictive Diseases.

Second Chances - Surviving AIDS in Uganda (Paperback): Susan Reynolds Whyte Second Chances - Surviving AIDS in Uganda (Paperback)
Susan Reynolds Whyte
R823 Discovery Miles 8 230 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

During the first decade of this millennium, many thousands of people in Uganda who otherwise would have died from AIDS got second chances at life. A massive global health intervention, the scaling up of antiretroviral therapy (ART), saved them and created a generation of people who learned to live with treatment. As clients they joined programs that offered free antiretroviral medicine and encouraged "positive living." Because ART is not a cure but a lifelong treatment regime, its consequences are far-reaching for society, families, and individuals. Drawing on personal accounts and a broad knowledge of Ugandan culture and history, the essays in this collection explore ART from the perspective of those who received second chances. Their concerns about treatment, partners, children, work, food, and bodies reveal the essential sociality of Ugandan life. The collection is based on research undertaken by a team of social scientists including both Western and African scholars.

Speech and Song at the Margins of Global Health - Zulu Tradition, HIV Stigma, and AIDS Activism in South Africa (Hardcover):... Speech and Song at the Margins of Global Health - Zulu Tradition, HIV Stigma, and AIDS Activism in South Africa (Hardcover)
Steven P Black
R3,254 Discovery Miles 32 540 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Speech and Song at the Margins of Global Health tells the story of a unique Zulu gospel choir comprised of people living with HIV in South Africa, and how they maintained healthy, productive lives amid globalized inequality, international aid, and the stigma that often comes with having HIV. By singing, joking, and narrating about HIV in Zulu, the performers in the choir were able to engage with international audiences, connect with global health professionals, and also maintain traditional familial respect through the prism of performance. The focus on gospel singing in the narrative provides a holistic viewpoint on life with HIV in the later years of the pandemic, and the author's musical engagement led to fieldwork in participants' homes and communities, including the larger stigmatized community of infected individuals. This viewpoint suggests overlooked ways that aid recipients contribute to global health in support, counseling, and activism, as the performers set up instruments, waited around in hotel lobbies, and struck up conversations with passersby and audience members. The story of the choir reveals the complexity and inequities of global health interventions, but also the positive impact of those interventions in the crafting of community.

Ethics and AIDS - Compassion and Justice in Global Crisis (Hardcover, New): Kenneth Overberg Ethics and AIDS - Compassion and Justice in Global Crisis (Hardcover, New)
Kenneth Overberg
R2,225 Discovery Miles 22 250 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

HIV/AIDS continues to devastate the lives of individuals and families, communities and countries. A growing numbness about HIV/AIDS, however, infects many people. Many fail to recognize that the AIDS epidemic is still getting worse, now spreading rapidly in the world's most populous countries. To help raise and renew consciousness about this threat to the world, Ethics and AIDS: Compassion and Justice in Global Crisis summarizes the basics of the AIDS epidemic and presents key themes insights based on the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. This ethical perspective is the result of decades of dialogue among Roman Catholics and other Christians, building on the strengths of the various traditions. This book offers a Christian view, with special emphasis on Roman Catholic thought; many of its ethical insights, however, can be shared by other faith traditions and by all people who desire to respond to the AIDS pandemic.

Religious Responses to HIV and AIDS (Hardcover): Miguel Munoz-Laboy, Jonathan Garcia, Joyce Moon-Howard, Patrick Wilson,... Religious Responses to HIV and AIDS (Hardcover)
Miguel Munoz-Laboy, Jonathan Garcia, Joyce Moon-Howard, Patrick Wilson, Richard Parker
R2,818 Discovery Miles 28 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Drawing on a wide range of methodologies, this book documents a diverse portfolio of religious responses to HIV and AIDS at the local and global levels in sites from sub-Saharan Africa to New York City. The volume goes beyond the psychology of religion, which is often based on how religion is used to cope with illness. It seeks to examine the role of religious institutions and cultures as key players in civil society, and to examine not only psychological factors, but social, cultural, economic and political dimensions of religious responses to the AIDS epidemic. At times religious movements have provided powerful forces for community mobilisation in response to the social vulnerability, economic exclusion and health problems associated with HIV. In other contexts, religious cultures have reproduced values and practices that have seriously impeded more effective approaches to mitigate the epidemic. By highlighting these complex and sometimes contradictory social processes, this book provides new insights into the potential for religious institutions to address the HIV epidemic more effectively. More broadly, it shows how research can be done on religion in the area of global public health, showing how civil society organizations shape opportunities for health promotion: a crucial and new area of global public health research. This book was originally published as a special issue of Global Public Health.

International Perspectives on Women and HIV (Paperback): Samuel A. MacMaster, Brian E. Bride, Cindy Davis International Perspectives on Women and HIV (Paperback)
Samuel A. MacMaster, Brian E. Bride, Cindy Davis
R1,492 Discovery Miles 14 920 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Throughout the world, the threat of HIV/AIDS to women's health has become the focus of increased concern. The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (2004) reports that almost 20 million women and girls are living with HIV globally, accounting for nearly half of all people living with HIV worldwide. Infection rates among women are rising in every region worldwide including high-income countries in which heterosexual intercourse may now be the most common mode of transmission. Although there are many contributing factors to the current trends in HIV, most women who become HIV-infected do not practice "high-risk" behaviour. Women worldwide may individually view themselves as less susceptible than men, and may pay less attention about how HIV is transmitted and how to prevent infection. There are also gender inequalities, stemming from sexual double standards that constrain women's access to care, treatment, and support. This work focuses on international perspectives on women and HIV casting a deliberately wide net addressing the issue of the interaction between HIV and gender in a specific geographic area. Our intention is to provide a forum for innovative manuscripts whose contribution to the literature is found in their unique approach to this interaction and application of empirical investigation to unique problems and/or populations. This material was published in the Journal of Human Behavior in the Social Environment.

Revisiting HIV/AIDS in French Culture - Raw Matters (Hardcover): Loic Bourdeau, V Hunter Capps Revisiting HIV/AIDS in French Culture - Raw Matters (Hardcover)
Loic Bourdeau, V Hunter Capps; Contributions by Brian J Troth, Cj Gomolka, Daniel Nabil Maroun, …
R2,179 Discovery Miles 21 790 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This edited collection brings together scholarship from established and emerging scholars in HIV/AIDS studies, French studies, Visual Arts, and Dance. As French writers and artists from the past five to ten years have been revisiting the AIDS crisis and its attendant cultural amnesia, their work has brought about the necessity of foregrounding vulnerability, exposure, risk, citizenship, and trauma when considering disease. By way of probing "rawness" and its varying iterations, this volume gathers analyses of HIV/AIDS productions from the 1980s to today in the service of excavating lessons learned by those living in proximity to disease. These lessons provide important tools to understand and discuss both the ongoing HIV and SARS-CoV-2 pandemics. The volume thus highlights the specificities of the former while offering solutions on how to discuss and mitigate the latter.

Fierce Medicines, Fragile Socialities - Grounding Global HIV Treatment in Tanzania (Hardcover): Dominik Mattes Fierce Medicines, Fragile Socialities - Grounding Global HIV Treatment in Tanzania (Hardcover)
Dominik Mattes
R3,334 Discovery Miles 33 340 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Set in Tanga, a city on the Tanzanian Swahili coast, Dominik Mattes examines the implementation of antiretroviral HIV-treatment (ART) in the area, exploring the manifold infrastructural and social fragilities of treatment provision in public HIV clinics as well as patients' multi-layered struggles of coming to terms with ART in their everyday lives. Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork, the book shows that, notwithstanding the massive rollout of ART, providing treatment and living a life with HIV in settings like Tanga continue to entail social, economic, and moral challenges and long-term uncertainties, which contradict the global rhetoric of the "normalization of HIV".

Patterns of Business Organization (RLE: Organizations) (Hardcover): John O'Shaughnessy Patterns of Business Organization (RLE: Organizations) (Hardcover)
John O'Shaughnessy
R4,642 Discovery Miles 46 420 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is a successor to the earlier and widely-used Business Organization. In this book the author helps the student to develop his or her own critical and conceptual understanding of the subject. As the author reviews the various approaches - classical, human relations, behavioural science, systems and contingency theories - he shows that none of them offers a simple progression from error to truth, but that all of them combine to contribute to a broader view of the field. The final chapter summarizes the author's viewpoint, applying the different approaches to a particular case study.

Another Life (Hardcover): Nick Danziger Another Life (Hardcover)
Nick Danziger; Foreword by Amartya Sen; Afterword by Kailash Satyarthi
R1,233 Discovery Miles 12 330 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Foreword by Amartya Sen (Nobel Prize for Economics, 1998) Afterword by Kailash Satyarthi (Nobel Peace Prize, 2014) In 2005, Nick Danziger began to create an archive of photographs documenting the lives of women and children in eight of the world's poorest countries. He returned five years later, and again in 2015. Had the United Nation's millennium development goals made a difference to their lives? The stories he tells - in pictures and words - are unforgettable and have created a unique document, one that reveals the uncomfortable truths of a globalised planet. It is full of hope, sadness, pain, anger and beauty. Some of the women and children Nick followed died through sickness and poverty. One has become the most successful entrepreneur her African border town has ever known. Another - who once dreamed of becoming a banker - is now a gang member in the world's murder capital. Yet another has confronted conformists and successfully changed his gender. The book will stand as a permanent record of their courage and humanity, but also as a reminder that much work still needs to be done if these goals are ever to be met. Too many people in India, Cambodia, Zambia, Uganda, Niger, Honduras, Bolivia and Armenia are still living in extreme poverty, without access to the health and education the goals were supposed to deliver.

AIDS, Behavior, and Culture - Understanding Evidence-Based Prevention (Paperback): Edward C. Green, Allison Herling Ruark AIDS, Behavior, and Culture - Understanding Evidence-Based Prevention (Paperback)
Edward C. Green, Allison Herling Ruark
R1,289 Discovery Miles 12 890 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

AIDS, Behavior, and Culture presents a bold challenge to the prevailing wisdom of "the global AIDS industry" and offers an alternative framework for understanding what works in HIV prevention. Arguing for a behavior-based approach, Green and Ruark make the case that the most effective programs are those that encourage fundamental behavioral changes such as abstinence, delay of sex, faithfulness, and cessation of injection drug use. Successful programs are locally based, low cost, low tech, innovative, and built on existing cultural structures. In contrast, they argue that anthropologists and public health practitioners focus on counseling, testing, condoms, and treatment, and impose their Western values, culture, and political ideologies in an attempt to "liberate" non-Western people from sexual repression and homophobia. This provocative book is essential reading for anyone working in HIV/AIDS prevention, and a stimulating introduction to the key controversies and approaches in global health and medical anthropology for students and general readers.

The Politics of AIDS Denialism - South Africa's Failure to Respond (Hardcover, New Ed): Pieter Fourie, Melissa Meyer The Politics of AIDS Denialism - South Africa's Failure to Respond (Hardcover, New Ed)
Pieter Fourie, Melissa Meyer
R2,828 Discovery Miles 28 280 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Successive South African governments have had controversial views on HIV and AIDS which have led to allegations that South Africa is in a state of denial about the AIDS epidemic. This book attempts to determine the validity of such claims of government denial by formulating and testing a denial hypothesis. The hypothesis is contextualized with an overview of the South African epidemic as well as a review of allegations of government denial. It reveals possible political factors that may motivate policy-makers to resort to official denial and tentatively concludes with a confirmation of the allegations contained in the denial hypothesis. However, this is done within the broader notion that denial is inherently vague and couched in language (rarely in writing) and therefore difficult to test with certainty and as such this book's real value lies in the insights gained into the complex politics of denial. By exploring the dynamics of denial and denialism and applying this to the South African AIDS epidemic, this study provides a comprehensive analysis.

AIDS and Rural Livelihoods - Dynamics and Diversity in Sub-Saharan Africa (Hardcover): Anke Niehof, Gabriel Rugalema AIDS and Rural Livelihoods - Dynamics and Diversity in Sub-Saharan Africa (Hardcover)
Anke Niehof, Gabriel Rugalema
R4,465 Discovery Miles 44 650 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

AIDS epidemics continue to threaten the livelihoods of millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa. Three decades after the disease was first recognized, the annual death toll from AIDS exceeds that from wars, famine and floods combined. Yet despite millions of dollars of aid and research, there has previously been little detailed on-the-ground analysis of the multifaceted impacts on rural people. Filling that gap, this book brings together recent evidence of AIDS impacts on rural households, livelihoods, and agricultural practice in sub-Saharan Africa. There is particular emphasis on the role of women in affected households, and on the situation of children. The book is unique in presenting micro-level information collected by original empirical research in a range of African countries, and showing how well-grounded conclusions on trends, impacts and local responses can be applied to the design of HIV-responsive policies and programmes. AIDS impacts are more diverse than we previously thought, and local responses more varied - sometimes innovative, sometimes desperate. The book represents a major contribution to our understanding of the impacts of AIDS in the epidemic's heartland, and how these can be managed at different levels.

Speaking truth to power - The story of the AIDS law project (Paperback): Didi Moyle Speaking truth to power - The story of the AIDS law project (Paperback)
Didi Moyle
R462 Discovery Miles 4 620 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Speaking truth to power is about the resurgence of activism in post-apartheid South Africa. A small legal NGO in Johannesburg, the AIDS Law Project (ALP), along with its allies in the Treatment Action Campaign, fought for more than a decade for the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS. Today South Africa has the laws that protect the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS and the largest treatment programme in the world. This would not have happened without dedicated activism and a commitment to social justice. Speaking truth to power tells how people used our constitution and the law in this struggle. The leadership of the ALP was clear as to how they wanted their history to be told. They saw the ALP story as the story of their clients and their cases, which form the milestones in this struggle. So this is a story about ordinary people who in their own way did some extraordinary things at an exceptionally difficult time. They stood up against prejudice and disinformation because they felt strongly about their rights. For some it was discrimination against themselves; for others it was discrimination against their fellow citizens who were vulnerable because they were living with a disease that had no cure and they were often seriously ill, even dying. To add insult to injury the country's president and, for some time, the government denied the scale of the epidemic. People's rights were being violated, but the law gave them a way to reassert them, generating the first resurgence of civil society in post-apartheid South Africa. This book is about the power of people and their courage to speak the truth.
