Theory of Convex Structures, Volume 50 (Hardcover): M.L.J.Van De Vel Theory of Convex Structures, Volume 50 (Hardcover)
M.L.J.Van De Vel
R1,968 Discovery Miles 19 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Presented in this monograph is the current state-of-the-art in the theory of convex structures. The notion of convexity covered here is considerably broader than the classic one; specifically, it is not restricted to the context of vector spaces. Classical concepts of order-convex sets (Birkhoff) and of geodesically convex sets (Menger) are directly inspired by intuition; they go back to the first half of this century. An axiomatic approach started to develop in the early Fifties. The author became attracted to it in the mid-Seventies, resulting in the present volume, in which graphs appear side-by-side with Banach spaces, classical geometry with matroids, and ordered sets with metric spaces. A wide variety of results has been included (ranging for instance from the area of partition calculus to that of continuous selection). The tools involved are borrowed from areas ranging from discrete mathematics to infinite-dimensional topology.

Although addressed primarily to the researcher, parts of this monograph can be used as a basis for a well-balanced, one-semester graduate course.

Some Topics in Algebra - An Advanced Undergraduate Course at PKU (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Michel Broue Some Topics in Algebra - An Advanced Undergraduate Course at PKU (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Michel Broue
R1,415 Discovery Miles 14 150 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

During the springs of 2011 and 2012, the author was invited by Peking University to give an advanced undergraduate algebra course (once a week over two months each year). This book was written during and for that course. By no way does it claim to be too exhaustive. It was originally intended as a brief introduction to algebra for an extremely pleasant and passionate audience. It certainly reflects some of the author s own tastes, and it was influenced by the feelings and the reactions of the students.

Nevertheless, the result covers some advanced undergraduate algebra (rings, ideals, basics of fields theory, algebraic integers, modules, hom and tensor functors, projective modules, etc.) illustrated by numerous examples, counterexamples and exercises. Following a worldwide tradition, the author had planned to conclude by lecturing on the structure of finitely generated modules over principal ideal domains. But during the course, after explaining that the notion of projective modules is more natural than the notion of free modules, it became clear that principal ideal domains needed to be replaced by Dedekind rings; this is much less traditional in the literature but not more difficult."

R2,529 Discovery Miles 25 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is the second volume of an intensive "Russian-style" two-year undergraduate course in abstract algebra, and introduces readers to the basic algebraic structures - fields, rings, modules, algebras, groups, and categories - and explains the main principles of and methods for working with them. The course covers substantial areas of advanced combinatorics, geometry, linear and multilinear algebra, representation theory, category theory, commutative algebra, Galois theory, and algebraic geometry - topics that are often overlooked in standard undergraduate courses. This textbook is based on courses the author has conducted at the Independent University of Moscow and at the Faculty of Mathematics in the Higher School of Economics. The main content is complemented by a wealth of exercises for class discussion, some of which include comments and hints, as well as problems for independent study.

Time Resources, Society and Ecology - On the Capacity for Human Interaction in Space and Time (Paperback): Tommy Carlstein Time Resources, Society and Ecology - On the Capacity for Human Interaction in Space and Time (Paperback)
Tommy Carlstein
R1,187 Discovery Miles 11 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1982, Time Resources, Society and Ecology examines and seeks to examine the time dimension in terms of the ecology, technology, social organization and spatial structure of the human habitat. Approaches to time resources - sociological time-budget studies, anthropological activity analysis, and economic analysis of money allocation - have been limited by their sectoral scope or their failure to relate effectively to the processes of social interaction, technological change and environmental structure. In this book, the book's articulation of time resources is developed in a general theoretical framework of action and interaction in time and space. The book examines constraints and possibilities facing preindustrial societies and throws light on the impact of technology on modern societies. Basic models of time allocation are presented, and, finally, a cross-cultural comparison is made of the mobilization of time resources in preindustrial societies. Geographers, social anthropologists and human ecologists should find this work directly relevant to their interest in understanding the interactions between man and environment.

An Invitation to Abstract Algebra (Hardcover): Steven J. Rosenberg An Invitation to Abstract Algebra (Hardcover)
Steven J. Rosenberg
R2,816 Discovery Miles 28 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Studying abstract algebra can be an adventure of awe-inspiring discovery. The subject need not be watered down nor should it be presented as if all students will become mathematics instructors. This is a beautiful, profound, and useful field which is part of the shared language of many areas both within and outside of mathematics. To begin this journey of discovery, some experience with mathematical reasoning is beneficial. This text takes a fairly rigorous approach to its subject, and expects the reader to understand and create proofs as well as examples throughout. The book follows a single arc, starting from humble beginnings with arithmetic and high-school algebra, gradually introducing abstract structures and concepts, and culminating with Niels Henrik Abel and Evariste Galois' achievement in understanding how we can-and cannot-represent the roots of polynomials. The mathematically experienced reader may recognize a bias toward commutative algebra and fondness for number theory. The presentation includes the following features: Exercises are designed to support and extend the material in the chapter, as well as prepare for the succeeding chapters. The text can be used for a one, two, or three-term course. Each new topic is motivated with a question. A collection of projects appears in Chapter 23. Abstract algebra is indeed a deep subject; it can transform not only the way one thinks about mathematics, but the way that one thinks-period. This book is offered as a manual to a new way of thinking. The author's aim is to instill the desire to understand the material, to encourage more discovery, and to develop an appreciation of the subject for its own sake.

An Introduction to Physical Oncology - How Mechanistic Mathematical Modeling Can Improve Cancer Therapy Outcomes (Paperback):... An Introduction to Physical Oncology - How Mechanistic Mathematical Modeling Can Improve Cancer Therapy Outcomes (Paperback)
Vittorio Cristini, Zhihui Wang, Eugene Koay
R1,576 Discovery Miles 15 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Physical oncology has the potential to revolutionize cancer research and treatment. The fundamental rationale behind this approach is that physical processes, such as transport mechanisms for drug molecules within tissue and forces exchanged by cancer cells with tissue, may play an equally important role as biological processes in influencing progression and treatment outcome. This book introduces the emerging field of physical oncology to a general audience, with a focus on recent breakthroughs that help in the design and discovery of more effective cancer treatments. It describes how novel mathematical models of physical transport processes incorporate patient tissue and imaging data routinely produced in the clinic to predict the efficacy of many cancer treatment approaches, including chemotherapy and radiation therapy. By helping to identify which therapies would be most beneficial for an individual patient, and quantifying their effects prior to actual implementation in the clinic, physical oncology allows doctors to design treatment regimens customized to each patient's clinical needs, significantly altering the current clinical approach to cancer treatment and improving the outcomes for patients.

Hierarchical Perceptual Grouping for Object Recognition - Theoretical Views and Gestalt-Law Applications (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Hierarchical Perceptual Grouping for Object Recognition - Theoretical Views and Gestalt-Law Applications (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Eckart Michaelsen, Jochen Meidow
R2,658 Discovery Miles 26 580 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This unique text/reference presents a unified approach to the formulation of Gestalt laws for perceptual grouping, and the construction of nested hierarchies by aggregation utilizing these laws. The book also describes the extraction of such constructions from noisy images showing man-made objects and clutter. Each Gestalt operation is introduced in a separate, self-contained chapter, together with application examples and a brief literature review. These are then brought together in an algebraic closure chapter, followed by chapters that connect the method to the data - i.e., the extraction of primitives from images, cooperation with machine-readable knowledge, and cooperation with machine learning. Topics and features: offers the first unified approach to nested hierarchical perceptual grouping; presents a review of all relevant Gestalt laws in a single source; covers reflection symmetry, frieze symmetry, rotational symmetry, parallelism and rectangular settings, contour prolongation, and lattices; describes the problem from all theoretical viewpoints, including syntactic, probabilistic, and algebraic perspectives; discusses issues important to practical application, such as primitive extraction and any-time search; provides an appendix detailing a general adjustment model with constraints. This work offers new insights and proposes novel methods to advance the field of machine vision, which will be of great benefit to students, researchers, and engineers active in this area.

Noncommutative Polynomial Algebras of Solvable Type and Their Modules - Basic Constructive-Computational Theory and Methods... Noncommutative Polynomial Algebras of Solvable Type and Their Modules - Basic Constructive-Computational Theory and Methods (Hardcover)
Huishi Li
R4,921 Discovery Miles 49 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Noncommutative Polynomial Algebras of Solvable Type and Their Modules is the first book to systematically introduce the basic constructive-computational theory and methods developed for investigating solvable polynomial algebras and their modules. In doing so, this book covers: A constructive introduction to solvable polynomial algebras and Groebner basis theory for left ideals of solvable polynomial algebras and submodules of free modules The new filtered-graded techniques combined with the determination of the existence of graded monomial orderings The elimination theory and methods (for left ideals and submodules of free modules) combining the Groebner basis techniques with the use of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, and the construction of different kinds of elimination orderings The computational construction of finite free resolutions (including computation of syzygies, construction of different kinds of finite minimal free resolutions based on computation of different kinds of minimal generating sets), etc. This book is perfectly suited to researchers and postgraduates researching noncommutative computational algebra and would also be an ideal resource for teaching an advanced lecture course.

Admissibility of Logical Inference Rules, Volume 136 (Hardcover): V.V. Rybakov Admissibility of Logical Inference Rules, Volume 136 (Hardcover)
V.V. Rybakov
R4,155 Discovery Miles 41 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The aim of this book is to present the fundamental theoretical results concerning inference rules in deductive formal systems. Primary attention is focused on:

- admissible or permissible inference rules

- the derivability of the admissible inference rules

- the structural completeness of logics

- the bases for admissible and valid inference rules.

There is particular emphasis on propositional non-standard logics (primary, superintuitionistic and modal logics) but general logical consequence relations and classical first-order theories are also considered.

The book is basically self-contained and special attention has been made to present the material in a convenient manner for the reader. Proofs of results, many of which are not readily available elsewhere, are also included.

The book is written at a level appropriate for first-year graduate students in mathematics or computer science. Although some knowledge of elementary logic and universal algebra are necessary, the first chapter includes all the results from universal algebra and logic that the reader needs. For graduate students in mathematics and computer science the book is an excellent textbook.

Axiomatic Fuzzy Set Theory and Its Applications (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Xiaodong Liu, Witold Pedrycz Axiomatic Fuzzy Set Theory and Its Applications (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Xiaodong Liu, Witold Pedrycz
R4,295 Discovery Miles 42 950 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

It is well known that "fuzziness"-informationgranulesand fuzzy sets as one of its formal manifestations- is one of important characteristics of human cognitionandcomprehensionofreality. Fuzzy phenomena existinnature and are encountered quite vividly within human society. The notion of a fuzzy set has been introduced by L. A. , Zadeh in 1965 in order to formalize human concepts, in connection with the representation of human natural language and computing with words. Fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic are used for mod- ing imprecise modes of reasoning that play a pivotal role in the remarkable human abilities to make rational decisions in an environment a?ected by - certainty and imprecision. A growing number of applications of fuzzy sets originated from the "empirical-semantic" approach. From this perspective, we were focused on some practical interpretations of fuzzy sets rather than being oriented towards investigations of the underlying mathematical str- tures of fuzzy sets themselves. For instance, in the context of control theory where fuzzy sets have played an interesting and practically relevant function, the practical facet of fuzzy sets has been stressed quite signi?cantly. However, fuzzy sets can be sought as an abstract concept with all formal underpinnings stemming from this more formal perspective. In the context of applications, it is worth underlying that membership functions do not convey the same meaning at the operational level when being cast in various contexts.

Linear Algebra, Signal Processing, and Wavelets - A Unified Approach - Python Version (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Oyvind Ryan Linear Algebra, Signal Processing, and Wavelets - A Unified Approach - Python Version (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Oyvind Ryan
R2,065 Discovery Miles 20 650 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book offers a user friendly, hands-on, and systematic introduction to applied and computational harmonic analysis: to Fourier analysis, signal processing and wavelets; and to their interplay and applications. The approach is novel, and the book can be used in undergraduate courses, for example, following a first course in linear algebra, but is also suitable for use in graduate level courses. The book will benefit anyone with a basic background in linear algebra. It defines fundamental concepts in signal processing and wavelet theory, assuming only a familiarity with elementary linear algebra. No background in signal processing is needed. Additionally, the book demonstrates in detail why linear algebra is often the best way to go. Those with only a signal processing background are also introduced to the world of linear algebra, although a full course is recommended. The book comes in two versions: one based on MATLAB, and one on Python, demonstrating the feasibility and applications of both approaches. Most of the code is available interactively. The applications mainly involve sound and images. The book also includes a rich set of exercises, many of which are of a computational nature.
