Natalia Letki, Tomasz Zaleskiewicz, Szymon Wichary, Malgorzata Kossowska
R1,099 Discovery Miles 10 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This timely interdisciplinary book brings together a wide spectrum of theoretical concepts and their empirical applications in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, informing our understanding of the social and psychological bases of a global crisis. Written by an author team of psychologists and sociologists, the volume provides comprehensive coverage of phenomena such as fear, risk, judgement and decision making, threat and uncertainty, group identity and cohesion, social and institutional trust, and communication in the context of an international health emergency. The topics have been grouped into four main chapters, focusing on the individual, group, social, and communication perspectives of the issues affecting or being affected by the pandemic, based on over 740 classic and current references of peer-reviewed research and contextualized with an epidemiological perspective discussed in the introduction. The volume finishes with two special sections, with a chapter on cultural specificity of the social impact of pandemics, focusing specifically on both Islam and Hinduism, and a chapter on the cross-national differences in policy responses to the current health crisis. Providing not just a reference for academic research, but also short-term and long-term policy solutions based on successful strategies to combat adverse social, cognitive, and emotional consequences, this is the ideal resource for academics and policymakers interested in social and psychological determinants of individual reactions to pandemics, as well as in fields such as economics, management, politics, and medical care.

Fundamental Structures of Algebra and Discrete Mat Mathematics (Hardcover): S. Foldes Fundamental Structures of Algebra and Discrete Mat Mathematics (Hardcover)
S. Foldes
R5,619 Discovery Miles 56 190 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Structures are defined by laws of composition, rules of generation, and relations. The objects on which these laws operate may be numbers, geometric objects like points and lines, or abstract symbols. Algebra is the study of mathematical laws, with a search for general principles that do not depend on what the objects are. Fundamental Structures of Algebra and Discrete Mathematics is an introduction to the twelve basic kinds of structures - sets, ordered sets, groups, rings, fields, vector spaces, graphs, lattices, matroids, topological spaces, universal algebras, and categories - that underlie algebra and discrete mathematics. Beginning with the most basic type of structure, sets, this unique reference provides a detailed look at the theoretical underpinning of each structure, shedding light on the significance of each structure as well as their interrelation. Using a self-contained approach that requires little previous knowledge of mathematical definitions, results, or methods, the book examines selected key aspects of these structures, including closure systems, generators, substructures, homomorphisms and congruences, equational axioms, connections with basic set theory, finiteness conditions, combinatorial properties, and discrete algorithmic procedures. Several classical results are proved, including the Abel-Ruffini theorem on unsolvability by radicals, Helly's theorem on intersecting convex sets, and a simplified version of the Godel-Herbrand completeness theorem. Many of the results are relevant to current research. Highly interactive in approach, the book features numerous exercises and examples woven throughout the text that allow the reader to become fully acquainted withthe character and function of each structure. Additional questions, designed to stretch the reader's analytical skills, appear at the end of each section. Similar to a grammar book that explains the fundamental structures essential to mastering a language, Fundamental Structures of Algebra and Discrete Mathematics is a systematic examination of the basic algebraic structures needed to understand and manipulate advanced mathematical concepts. A cornerstone reference that is both a clear primer and rigorous study guide, Fundamental Structures of Algebra and Discrete Mathematics is indispensable to the student and professional seeking to learn or use the methods of modern algebra.

Valerie Berthe, Michel Rigo
R4,801 Discovery Miles 48 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This collaborative book presents recent trends on the study of sequences, including combinatorics on words and symbolic dynamics, and new interdisciplinary links to group theory and number theory. Other chapters branch out from those areas into subfields of theoretical computer science, such as complexity theory and theory of automata. The book is built around four general themes: number theory and sequences, word combinatorics, normal numbers, and group theory. Those topics are rounded out by investigations into automatic and regular sequences, tilings and theory of computation, discrete dynamical systems, ergodic theory, numeration systems, automaton semigroups, and amenable groups. This volume is intended for use by graduate students or research mathematicians, as well as computer scientists who are working in automata theory and formal language theory. With its organization around unified themes, it would also be appropriate as a supplemental text for graduate level courses.

Surreal Numbers (Paperback): Donald Knuth Surreal Numbers (Paperback)
Donald Knuth
R490 Discovery Miles 4 900 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Nearly 30 years ago, John Horton Conway introduced a new way to construct numbers. Donald E. Knuth, in appreciation of this revolutionary system, took a week off from work on The Art of Computer Programming to write an introduction to Conway's method. Never content with the ordinary, Knuth wrote this introduction as a work of fiction--a novelette. If not a steamy romance, the book nonetheless shows how a young couple turned on to pure mathematics and found total happiness.

The book's primary aim, Knuth explains in a postscript, is not so much to teach Conway's theory as "to teach how one might go about developing such a theory." He continues: "Therefore, as the two characters in this book gradually explore and build up Conway's number system, I have recorded their false starts and frustrations as well as their good ideas. I wanted to give a reasonably faithful portrayal of the important principles, techniques, joys, passions, and philosophy of mathematics, so I wrote the story as I was actually doing the research myself..,." It is an astonishing feat of legerdemain. An empty hat rests on a table made of a few axioms of standard set theory. Conway waves two simple rules in the air, then reaches into almost nothing and pulls out an infinitely rich tapestry of numbers that form a real and closed field. Every real number is surrounded by a host of new numbers that lie closer to it than any other "real" value does. The system is truly "surreal." "quoted from Martin Gardner, Mathematical Magic Show, pp. 16--19"

Surreal Numbers, now in its 13th printing, will appeal to anyone who might enjoy an engaging dialogue on abstract mathematical ideas, and who might wish to experience hownew mathematics is created.

Metaharmonic Lattice Point Theory (Paperback): Willi Freeden Metaharmonic Lattice Point Theory (Paperback)
Willi Freeden
R2,007 Discovery Miles 20 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Metaharmonic Lattice Point Theory covers interrelated methods and tools of spherically oriented geomathematics and periodically reflected analytic number theory. The book establishes multi-dimensional Euler and Poisson summation formulas corresponding to elliptic operators for the adaptive determination and calculation of formulas and identities of weighted lattice point numbers, in particular the non-uniform distribution of lattice points. The author explains how to obtain multi-dimensional generalizations of the Euler summation formula by interpreting classical Bernoulli polynomials as Green's functions and linking them to Zeta and Theta functions. To generate multi-dimensional Euler summation formulas on arbitrary lattices, the Helmholtz wave equation must be converted into an associated integral equation using Green's functions as bridging tools. After doing this, the weighted sums of functional values for a prescribed system of lattice points can be compared with the corresponding integral over the function. Exploring special function systems of Laplace and Helmholtz equations, this book focuses on the analytic theory of numbers in Euclidean spaces based on methods and procedures of mathematical physics. It shows how these fundamental techniques are used in geomathematical research areas, including gravitation, magnetics, and geothermal.

Learning Abstract Algebra with ISETL (Hardcover, 1st ed. 1994. Corr. 2nd printing 1998): Ed Dubinsky, Uri Leron Learning Abstract Algebra with ISETL (Hardcover, 1st ed. 1994. Corr. 2nd printing 1998)
Ed Dubinsky, Uri Leron
R1,432 Discovery Miles 14 320 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Most students in abstract algebra classes have great difficulty making sense of what the instructor is saying. Moreover, this seems to remain true almost independently of the quality of the lecture. This book is based on the constructivist belief that, before students can make sense of any presentation of abstract mathematics, they need to be engaged in mental activities which will establish an experiential base for any future verbal explanation. No less, they need to have the opportunity to reflect on their activities. This approach is based on extensive theoretical and empirical studies as well as on the substantial experience of the authors in teaching astract algebra. The main source of activities in this course is computer constructions, specifically, small programs written in the mathlike programming language ISETL; the main tool for reflections is work in teams of 2-4 students, where the activities are discussed and debated. Because of the similarity of ISETL expressions to standard written mathematics, there is very little programming overhead: learning to program is inseparable from learning the mathematics. Each topic is first introduced through computer activities, which are then followed by a text section and exercises. This text section is written in an informed, discusive style, closely relating definitions and proofs to the constructions in the activities. Notions such as cosets and quotient groups become much more meaningful to the students than when they are preseted in a lecture.

Wavelet Based Approximation Schemes for Singular Integral Equations (Paperback): Madan Mohan Panja, Birendra Nath Mandal Wavelet Based Approximation Schemes for Singular Integral Equations (Paperback)
Madan Mohan Panja, Birendra Nath Mandal
R1,984 Discovery Miles 19 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Many mathematical problems in science and engineering are defined by ordinary or partial differential equations with appropriate initial-boundary conditions. Among the various methods, boundary integral equation method (BIEM) is probably the most effective. It's main advantage is that it changes a problem from its formulation in terms of unbounded differential operator to one for an integral/integro-differential operator, which makes the problem tractable from the analytical or numerical point of view. Basically, the review/study of the problem is shifted to a boundary (a relatively smaller domain), where it gives rise to integral equations defined over a suitable function space. Integral equations with singular kernels areamong the most important classes in the fields of elasticity, fluid mechanics, electromagnetics and other domains in applied science and engineering. With the advancesin computer technology, numerical simulations have become important tools in science and engineering. Several methods have been developed in numerical analysis for equations in mathematical models of applied sciences. Widely used methods include: Finite Difference Method (FDM), Finite Element Method (FEM), Finite Volume Method (FVM) and Galerkin Method (GM). Unfortunately, none of these are versatile. Each has merits and limitations. For example, the widely used FDM and FEM suffers from difficulties in problem solving when rapid changes appear in singularities. Even with the modern computing machines, analysis of shock-wave or crack propagations in three dimensional solids by the existing classical numerical schemes is challenging (computational time/memory requirements). Therefore, with the availability of faster computing machines, research into the development of new efficient schemes for approximate solutions/numerical simulations is an ongoing parallel activity. Numerical methods based on wavelet basis (multiresolution analysis) may be regarded as a confluence of widely used numerical schemes based on Finite Difference Method, Finite Element Method, Galerkin Method, etc. The objective of this monograph is to deal with numerical techniques to obtain (multiscale) approximate solutions in wavelet basis of different types of integral equations with kernels involving varieties of singularities appearing in the field of elasticity, fluid mechanics, electromagnetics and many other domains in applied science and engineering.

Lengths, Widths, Surfaces - A Portrait of Old Babylonian Algebra and Its Kin (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): Jens Hoyrup Lengths, Widths, Surfaces - A Portrait of Old Babylonian Algebra and Its Kin (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
Jens Hoyrup
R4,949 Discovery Miles 49 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this new examination of Babylonian cuneiform texts, Jens Hoyrup proposes a new interpretation, based on the fact that the tablets are almost entirely students¿ workbooks. The knowledge of mathematics expressed in these tablets is entirely ¿practical,¿ for use in surveying, accounting, and building, rather than theoretical. Hoyrup argues that the notion of algebraic manipulation, like other parts of a theoretical mathematics is indeed a later invention.

Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology (Hardcover, 1997 ed.): Jeffery Lewins, Martin Becker Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology (Hardcover, 1997 ed.)
Jeffery Lewins, Martin Becker
R4,038 Discovery Miles 40 380 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The present review volume not only covers a wide range of topics pertinent to nuclear science and technology, but has attracted a distinguished international authorship, for which the editors are grateful. The opening review by Drs. Janet Tawn and Richard Wakeford addresses the difficult matter of questioning sci- tific hypotheses in a court of law. The United Kingdom experienced a substantial nuclear accident in the 1950s in the form of the Windscale Pile fire. This in itself had both good and bad consequences; the setting up of a licensing authority to ensure nuclear safety was one, the understandable public sentiment concerning nuclear power (despite the fire occurring in a weapons pile) the other. Windscale today is subsumed in the reprocessing plant at Sellafield operated by British Nuclear Fuels plc and it was inevitable perhaps that when an excess cluster of childhood leukaemia was observed in the nearby village of Seascale that public concern should be promoted by the media, leading to the hearing of a claim of compensation brought on behalf of two of the families of BNFLs workers who had suffered that loss. The review article demonstrates the complexity of und- standing such a claim against the statistical fluctuations inherent and shows how the courts were persuaded of the need to propose a biological mechanism if responsibility were to be held. The Company were undoubtedly relieved by the finding.
