This volume includes 74 papers presented at ICTIS 2017: Second International Conference on Information and Communication Technology for Intelligent Systems. The conference was held on 25th and 26th March 2017, in Ahmedabad, India and organized jointly by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) Gujarat Chapter, the G R Foundation, the Association of Computer Machinery, Ahmedabad Chapter and supported by the Computer Society of India Division IV - Communication and Division V - Education and Research. The papers featured mainly focus on information and communications technology (ICT) for computation, algorithms and data analytics. The fundamentals of various data analytics and algorithms discussed are useful to researchers in the field.
This book focuses on dialog from a varied combination of fields: Linguistics, Philosophy of Language and Computation. It builds on the hypothesis that meaning in human communication arises at the discourse level rather than at the word level. The book offers a complex analytical framework and integration of the central areas of research around human communication. The content revolves around meaning but it also gives evidence of the connection among different points of view. Besides discussing issues of general interest to the field, the book triggers theoretical argumentation that is currently under scientific discussion. It examines such topics as immanent reasoning joined with Recanati's lekta and free enrichment, challenges of internet conversation, inner dialogs, cognition and language, and the relation between assertion and denial. It proposes a dialogical framework for intra-negotiation and gives a geolinguistic perspective on spoken discourse. Finally, it examines dialog and abduction and sheds light on a generation of dialog contexts by means of multimodal logic applied to speech acts.
This book presents integrated optimization methods and algorithms for power system problems along with their codes in MATLAB. Providing a reliable and secure power and energy system is one of the main challenges of the new era. Due to the nonlinear multi-objective nature of these problems, the traditional methods are not suitable approaches for solving large-scale power system operation dilemmas. The integration of optimization algorithms into power systems has been discussed in several textbooks, but this is the first to include the integration methods and the developed codes. As such, it is a useful resource for undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and engineers trying to solve power and energy optimization problems using modern technical and intelligent systems based on theory and application case studies. This contributed volume explores the achievements gained and the remaining puzzling questions by applying dynamical systems theory to the linguistic inquiry. In particular, the book is divided into three parts, each one addressing one of the following topics: 1) Facing complexity in the right way: mathematics and complexity 2) Complexity and theory of language 3) From empirical observation to formal models: investigation of specific linguistic phenomena, like enunciation, deixis, or the meaning of the metaphorical phrases The application of complexity theory to describe cognitive phenomena is a recent and very promising trend in cognitive science. At the time when dynamical approaches triggered a paradigm shift in cognitive science some decade ago, the major topic of research were the challenges imposed by classical computational approaches dealing with the explanation of cognitive phenomena like consciousness, decision making and language. The target audience primarily comprises researchers and experts in the field but the book may also be beneficial for graduate and post-graduate students who want to enter the field.
There is widespread interest in the way that smart energy control systems, such as assessment and monitoring techniques for low carbon, nearly-zero energy and net positive buildings can contribute to a Sustainable future, for current and future generations. This book entitled 'Smart Energy Control Systems for Sustainable Buildings' contains eleven chapters written by international experts based on enhanced conference papers presented at the Sustainability and Energy in Buildings International conference series. This volume presents a process for developing expert systems. As the field of instructional technology matures it is becoming clear that technological process, not technological devices, is the single most important factor in designing effective instruction. Computers as devices are helpful, but their primary advantage may be the discipline placed on thinking and design processes by using them. The process used when examining a problem determines the quality of information entered into a program and the ultimate effectiveness of the solution. The process in this volume is intended for small-scale expert system solutions that contribute to the solution of instructional problems. Hardware independent, the volume focuses on narrowly defined examples intended for small personal computer systems. Particular attention is paid to problems associated with education and training. "Building Expert Systems in Training and Education" has one primary function: to help instructional designers derive the components of a problem and enter it into an expert system shell. It is totally process-oriented and focuses on the front-end knowledge engineering process. It provides a repertoire of practical tools and processes that can be used to select, define, and structure problems. Three types of examples are used to illustrate three ways to use expert systems: for instructional support, for instructional decision making, and for an instructional job aid. Each chapter is followed by a list of learning activities to facilitate practice and consolidation. When appropriate, answers or examples to the learning activities is given. This is a practical guide for instructional technology educators and students, and business and industrial training professionals.
This book focuses on enabling mobile robots to recognize scenes in indoor environments, in order to allow them to determine which actions are appropriate at which points in time. In concrete terms, future robots will have to solve the classification problem represented by scene recognition sufficiently well for them to act independently in human-centered environments. To achieve accurate yet versatile indoor scene recognition, the book presents a hierarchical data structure for scenes - the Implicit Shape Model trees. Further, it also provides training and recognition algorithms for these trees. In general, entire indoor scenes cannot be perceived from a single point of view. To address this problem the authors introduce Active Scene Recognition (ASR), a concept that embeds canonical scene recognition in a decision-making system that selects camera views for a mobile robot to drive to so that it can find objects not yet localized. The authors formalize the automatic selection of camera views as a Next-Best-View (NBV) problem to which they contribute an algorithmic solution, which focuses on realistic problem modeling while maintaining its computational efficiency. Lastly, the book introduces a method for predicting the poses of objects to be searched, establishing the otherwise missing link between scene recognition and NBV estimation.

In order to make the student modeling process clear, a literature review concerning student modeling techniques and approaches during the past decade is presented in a special chapter. The Handbook on Socially Interactive Agents provides a comprehensive overview of the research fields of Embodied Conversational Agents, Intelligent Virtual Agents, and Social Robotics. Socially Interactive Agents (SIAs), whether virtually or physically embodied, are autonomous agents that are able to perceive an environment including people or other agents, reason, decide how to interact, and express attitudes such as emotions, engagement, or empathy. They are capable of interacting with people and one another in a socially intelligent manner using multimodal communicative behaviors, with the goal to support humans in various domains. Written by international experts in their respective fields, the book summarizes research in the many important research communities pertinent for SIAs, while discussing current challenges and future directions. The handbook provides easy access to modeling and studying SIAs for researchers and students, and aims at further bridging the gap between the research communities involved. The first volume starts by introducing what is involved in SIAs research, in particular research methodologies and ethical implications of developing SIAs. This book explains the most prominent and some promising new, general techniques that combine metaheuristics with other optimization methods. A first introductory chapter reviews the basic principles of local search, prominent metaheuristics, and tree search, dynamic programming, mixed integer linear programming, and constraint programming for combinatorial optimization purposes.
