Diarmaid Murphy is an Army Officer in the Irish Defence Forces. Born in Dublin, he grew up in Kildare. Mr. Murphy originally joined the Irish Air Corps, training at Baldonnel Aerodrome. He was then accepted into Army officer training at the Military College and gained a Presidential Commission in the Irish Defence Forces, and a Diploma in International Military Studies. Having studied Transport Operations and Technology at the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), he gained an honours degree with distinction and received the Wincanton Award upon conclusion of the course. The Army then assigned him as Officer in Charge of armoured maintenance in his Brigade. In this role, he managed workshops for the Irish Defense Forces, overseeing maintenance for his Brigade and much of the Irish Defense Forces vehicle fleet. In his active career in military transport and engineering, he has served as technical officer on purchasing boards; managed vehicle retrofit and modification programs; and supervised a wide variety of technical projects in telematics, post-accident analysis, fuel contamination and others. With considerable expertise in keeping a fleet of high performance vehicles on the road, Mr. Murphy has participated in projects and conferences with other nations operating a variety of military vehicles. He was also project manager on the restoration project for the Sliabh na mBan armoured Rolls Royce vehicle. Diarmaid Murphy also served in the Balkans as part of KFOR and in Lebanon with UNIFIL. This book presents cutting-edge work on the most challenging research issues concerning intelligent transportation systems (ITS), introducing selected, highly relevant advanced research on scheduling and real-time communication for vehicular networks, as well as fault tolerance, test beds and simulations for ITS. The authors define new architectures that support cooperative sensing in ITS and offer guidance for the development of a reference end-to-end implementation. The presented results allow advanced traffic and travel management strategies to be formulated on the basis of reliable and real-time input data. The effectiveness of these new strategies, together with the proposed systems, is assessed in field trials and via simulations. The chapters in this book detail new research findings, algorithms, protocols, and the development of an implementation platform for ITS that merges and integrates heterogeneous data sources into a common system. The design and testing of modern vehicle electronics are becoming more and more demanding due to increasing interdependencies among components and the safety criticality of tasks. The development towards Drive-by-Wire functionalities in vehicles with multiple actuators for vehicle control further increases the challenge. The book explicitly takes into account the interactions between components and aims at bridging the gap between the need to generate additional customer benefits and the effort to achieve functional safety. The book follows a twofold approach: on the one side, it presents a toolchain to support efficient further development of novel functionalities for Drive-by-Wire vehicles. The toolchain comprises appropriate software tools and scaled and full-scale experimental vehicles. On the other side, development towards functionally safe and flexible Drive-by-Wire vehicles is addressed by proposing a top-down designed architecture for vehicle electronics that is enabled by suitable mechanisms. Most existing works on automotive painting cover only a single aspect of this complex topic, such as the chemistry of paint or paint booth technology. Monozukuri and Hitozukuri are Japanese terms that can be translated as "making things" and "developing people" but their implications in Japanese are richer and more complex than this minimal translation would indicate. The Monozukuri-Hitozukuri perspective is drawn from essential principles on which the Toyota approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement is based. From this perspective, neither painting technology R&D nor painting technology use in manufacturing can be done successfully without integrating technological and human concerns involved with making and learning in the broadest sense, as the hyphen is meant to indicate. The editors provide case studies and examples -- drawn from Mr. Toda's 33 years of experience with automotive painting at Toyota and from Dr. Saito's 18 years experience with IR4TD, the research-for-development group he leads at the University of Kentucky -- that give details on how these two principles can be integrated for successful problem-solving and innovation in industry, in university R&D, and in the collaboration between the two. This book provides cutting-edge insights into autonomous vehicles and road terrain classification, and introduces a more rational and practical method for identifying road terrain. It presents the MRF algorithm, which combines the various sensors' classification results to improve the forward LRF for predicting upcoming road terrain types. The comparison between the predicting LRF and its corresponding MRF show that the MRF multiple-sensor fusion method is extremely robust and effective in terms of classifying road terrain.
