Linear Second Order Elliptic Operators (Hardcover): Julian Lopez-Gomez Linear Second Order Elliptic Operators (Hardcover)
Julian Lopez-Gomez
R1,425 Discovery Miles 14 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The main goal of the book is to provide a comprehensive and self-contained proof of the, relatively recent, theorem of characterization of the strong maximum principle due to Molina-Meyer and the author, published in Diff. Int. Eqns. in 1994, which was later refined by Amann and the author in a paper published in J. of Diff. Eqns. in 1998. Besides this characterization has been shown to be a pivotal result for the development of the modern theory of spatially heterogeneous nonlinear elliptic and parabolic problems; it has allowed us to update the classical theory on the maximum and minimum principles by providing with some extremely sharp refinements of the classical results of Hopf and Protter-Weinberger. By a celebrated result of Berestycki, Nirenberg and Varadhan, Comm. Pure Appl. Maths. in 1994, the characterization theorem is partially true under no regularity constraints on the support domain for Dirichlet boundary conditions.Instead of encyclopedic generality, this book pays special attention to completeness, clarity and transparency of its exposition so that it can be taught even at an advanced undergraduate level. Adopting this perspective, it is a textbook; however, it is simultaneously a research monograph about the maximum principle, as it brings together for the first time in the form of a book, the most paradigmatic classical results together with a series of recent fundamental results scattered in a number of independent papers by the author of this book and his collaborators.Chapters 3, 4, and 5 can be delivered as a classical undergraduate, or graduate, course in Hilbert space techniques for linear second order elliptic operators, and Chaps. 1 and 2 complete the classical results on the minimum principle covered by the paradigmatic textbook of Protter and Weinberger by incorporating some recent classification theorems of supersolutions by Walter, 1989, and the author, 2003. Consequently, these five chapters can be taught at an undergraduate, or graduate, level. Chapters 6 and 7 study the celebrated theorem of Krein-Rutman and infer from it the characterizations of the strong maximum principle of Molina-Meyer and Amann, in collaboration with the author, which have been incorporated to a textbook by the first time here, as well as the results of Chaps. 8 and 9, polishing some recent joint work of Cano-Casanova with the author. Consequently, the second half of the book consists of a more specialized monograph on the maximum principle and the underlying principal eigenvalues.

Linear Port-Hamiltonian Systems on Infinite-dimensional Spaces (Hardcover, 2012 ed.): Birgit Jacob, Hans J. Zwart Linear Port-Hamiltonian Systems on Infinite-dimensional Spaces (Hardcover, 2012 ed.)
Birgit Jacob, Hans J. Zwart
R2,098 Discovery Miles 20 980 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book provides a self-contained introduction to the theory of infinite-dimensional systems theory and its applications to port-Hamiltonian systems. The textbook starts with elementary known results, then progresses smoothly to advanced topics in current research. Many physical systems can be formulated using a Hamiltonian framework, leading to models described by ordinary or partial differential equations. For the purpose of control and for the interconnection of two or more Hamiltonian systems it is essential to take into account this interaction with the environment. This book is the first textbook on infinite-dimensional port-Hamiltonian systems. An abstract functional analytical approach is combined with the physical approach to Hamiltonian systems. This combined approach leads to easily verifiable conditions for well-posedness and stability. The book is accessible to graduate engineers and mathematicians with a minimal background in functional analysis. Moreover, the theory is illustrated by many worked-out examples.

Bifurcation Theory of Functional Differential Equations (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Shangjiang Guo, Jianhong Wu Bifurcation Theory of Functional Differential Equations (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Shangjiang Guo, Jianhong Wu
R3,402 Discovery Miles 34 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a crash course on various methods from the bifurcation theory of Functional Differential Equations (FDEs). FDEs arise very naturally in economics, life sciences and engineering and the study of FDEs has been a major source of inspiration for advancement in nonlinear analysis and infinite dimensional dynamical systems. The book summarizes some practical and general approaches and frameworks for the investigation of bifurcation phenomena of FDEs depending on parameters with chap. This well illustrated book aims to be self contained so the readers will find in this book all relevant materials in bifurcation, dynamical systems with symmetry, functional differential equations, normal forms and center manifold reduction. This material was used in graduate courses on functional differential equations at Hunan University (China) and York University (Canada).

R4,327 Discovery Miles 43 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Optimization problems subject to constraints governed by partial differential equations (PDEs) are among the most challenging problems in the context of industrial, economical and medical applications. Almost the entire range of problems in this field of research was studied and further explored as part of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) priority program 1253 on "Optimization with Partial Differential Equations" from 2006 to 2013. The investigations were motivated by the fascinating potential applications and challenging mathematical problems that arise in the field of PDE constrained optimization. New analytic and algorithmic paradigms have been developed, implemented and validated in the context of real-world applications. In this special volume, contributions from more than fifteen German universities combine the results of this interdisciplinary program with a focus on applied mathematics. The book is divided into five sections on "Constrained Optimization, Identification and Control", "Shape and Topology Optimization", "Adaptivity and Model Reduction", "Discretization: Concepts and Analysis" and "Applications". Peer-reviewed research articles present the most recent results in the field of PDE constrained optimization and control problems. Informative survey articles give an overview of topics that set sustainable trends for future research. This makes this special volume interesting not only for mathematicians, but also for engineers and for natural and medical scientists working on processes that can be modeled by PDEs.

Interpolation and Sidon Sets for Compact Groups (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Colin Graham, Kathryn E. Hare Interpolation and Sidon Sets for Compact Groups (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Colin Graham, Kathryn E. Hare
R3,367 Discovery Miles 33 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Understanding special sets of integers was classically of interest to Hadamard, Zygmund and others, and continues to be of interest today. This book is a modern treatment of the subject of interpolation and Sidon sets. It is a unique book, aimed at both new and experienced researchers. In particular, this is the only book in English which features a complete treatment of the Pisier-Bourgain results on Sidon sets, many of which were originally in French, in hard to access publications. Applications of the P-B results, due to Pisier, Bourgain, Ramsey, and the authors are included. The book introduces the reader to a wealth of methods important in mathematics today: topological, probabilistic, algebraic, combinatoric and analytic. It prepares students to perform research in the area and provides both exercises and open problems. The book also provides direction to the literature for topics it does not fully cover. The book is self-contained, with appendices covering results that are required, but not necessarily in the pre-requisite background of a student ready to choose an area for research in harmonic analysis.

Takeo Ohsawa
R3,128 Discovery Miles 31 280 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This monograph presents the current status of a rapidly developing part of several complex variables, motivated by the applicability of effective results to algebraic geometry and differential geometry. Special emphasis is put on the new precise results on the L(2) extension of holomorphic functions in the past 5 years. In Chapter 1, the classical questions of several complex variables motivating the development of this field are reviewed after necessary preparations from the basic notions of those variables and of complex manifolds such as holomorphic functions, pseudoconvexity, differential forms, and cohomology. In Chapter 2, the L(2) method of solving the d-bar equation is presented emphasizing its differential geometric aspect. In Chapter 3, a refinement of the Oka-Cartan theory is given by this method. The L(2) extension theorem with an optimal constant is included, obtained recently by Z. Blocki and separately by Q.-A. Guan and X.-Y. Zhou. In Chapter 4, various results on the Bergman kernel are presented, including recent works of Maitani-Yamaguchi, Berndtsson, Guan-Zhou, and Berndtsson-Lempert. Most of these results are obtained by the L(2) method. In the last chapter, rather specific results are discussed on the existence and classification of certain holomorphic foliations and Levi flat hypersurfaces as their stables sets. These are also applications of the L(2) method obtained during the past 15 years.

Mathematical Elasticity, Volume 27 - Volume II: Theory of Plates (Hardcover): Philippe G. Ciarlet Mathematical Elasticity, Volume 27 - Volume II: Theory of Plates (Hardcover)
Philippe G. Ciarlet
R4,146 Discovery Miles 41 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The objective of Volume II is to show how asymptotic methods, with the thickness as the small parameter, indeed provide a powerful means of justifying two-dimensional plate theories. More specifically, without any recourse to any "a priori" assumptions of a geometrical or mechanical nature, it is shown that in the linear case, the three-dimensional displacements, once properly scaled, converge in "H"1 towards a limit that satisfies the well-known two-dimensional equations of the linear Kirchhoff-Love theory; the convergence of stress is also established.

In the nonlinear case, again after "ad hoc" scalings have been performed, it is shown that the leading term of a formal asymptotic expansion of the three-dimensional solution satisfies well-known two-dimensional equations, such as those of the nonlinear Kirchhoff-Love theory, or the von Karman equations. Special attention is also given to the first convergence result obtained in this case, which leads to two-dimensional large deformation, frame-indifferent, nonlinear membrane theories. It is also demonstrated that asymptotic methods can likewise be used for justifying other lower-dimensional equations of elastic shallow shells, and the coupled pluri-dimensional equations of elastic multi-structures, i.e., structures with junctions. In each case, the existence, uniqueness or multiplicity, and regularity of solutions to the limit equations obtained in this fashion are also studied.

Open Problems in the Geometry and Analysis of Banach Spaces (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Antonio J. Guirao, Vicente Montesinos,... Open Problems in the Geometry and Analysis of Banach Spaces (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Antonio J. Guirao, Vicente Montesinos, Vaclav Zizler
R2,954 Discovery Miles 29 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is an collection of some easily-formulated problems that remain open in the study of the geometry and analysis of Banach spaces. Assuming the reader has a working familiarity with the basic results of Banach space theory, the authors focus on concepts of basic linear geometry, convexity, approximation, optimization, differentiability, renormings, weak compact generating, Schauder bases and biorthogonal systems, fixed points, topology and nonlinear geometry. The main purpose of this work is to help in convincing young researchers in Functional Analysis that the theory of Banach spaces is a fertile field of research, full of interesting open problems. Inside the Banach space area, the text should help expose young researchers to the depth and breadth of the work that remains, and to provide the perspective necessary to choose a direction for further study. Some of the problems are longstanding open problems, some are recent, some are more important and some are only local problems. Some would require new ideas, some may be resolved with only a subtle combination of known facts. Regardless of their origin or longevity, each of these problems documents the need for further research in this area.

This volume is an introductory level textbook for partial differential equations (PDE's) and suitable for a one-semester undergraduate level or two-semester graduate level course in PDE's or applied mathematics. Chapters One to Five are organized according to the equations and the basic PDE's are introduced in an easy to understand manner. They include the first-order equations and the three fundamental second-order equations, i.e. the heat, wave and Laplace equations. Through these equations we learn the types of problems, how we pose the problems, and the methods of solutions such as the separation of variables and the method of characteristics. The modeling aspects are explained as well. The methods introduced in earlier chapters are developed further in Chapters Six to Twelve. They include the Fourier series, the Fourier and the Laplace transforms, and the Green's functions. The equations in higher dimensions are also discussed in detail. This volume is application-oriented and rich in examples. Going through these examples, the reader is able to easily grasp the basics of PDE's.

An Introduction to Linear Ordinary Differential Equations Using the Impulsive Response Method and Factorization (Hardcover, 1st... An Introduction to Linear Ordinary Differential Equations Using the Impulsive Response Method and Factorization (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Roberto Camporesi
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents a method for solving linear ordinary differential equations based on the factorization of the differential operator. The approach for the case of constant coefficients is elementary, and only requires a basic knowledge of calculus and linear algebra. In particular, the book avoids the use of distribution theory, as well as the other more advanced approaches: Laplace transform, linear systems, the general theory of linear equations with variable coefficients and variation of parameters. The case of variable coefficients is addressed using Mammana's result for the factorization of a real linear ordinary differential operator into a product of first-order (complex) factors, as well as a recent generalization of this result to the case of complex-valued coefficients.

In this book, the author compares the meaning of stability in different subfields of numerical mathematics.

Concept of Stability in numerical mathematics opens by examining the stability of finite algorithms. A more precise definition of stability holds for quadrature and interpolation methods, which the following chapters focus on. The discussion then progresses to the numerical treatment of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). While one-step methods for ODEs are always stable, this is not the case for hyperbolic or parabolic differential equations, which are investigated next. The final chapters discuss stability for discretisations of elliptic differential equations and integral equations.

In comparison among the subfields we discuss the practical importance of stability and the possible conflict between higher consistency order and stability.

Brownian dynamics serve as mathematical models for the diffusive motion of microscopic particles of various shapes in gaseous, liquid, or solid environments. The renewed interest in Brownian dynamics is due primarily to their key role in molecular and cellular biophysics: diffusion of ions and molecules is the driver of all life. Brownian dynamics simulations are the numerical realizations of stochastic differential equations that model the functions of biological micro devices such as protein ionic channels of biological membranes, cardiac myocytes, neuronal synapses, and many more. Stochastic differential equations are ubiquitous models in computational physics, chemistry, biophysics, computer science, communications theory, mathematical finance theory, and many other disciplines. Brownian dynamics simulations of the random motion of particles, be it molecules or stock prices, give rise to mathematical problems that neither the kinetic theory of Maxwell and Boltzmann, nor Einstein's and Langevin's theories of Brownian motion could predict. This book takes the readers on a journey that starts with the rigorous definition of mathematical Brownian motion, and ends with the explicit solution of a series of complex problems that have immediate applications. It is aimed at applied mathematicians, physicists, theoretical chemists, and physiologists who are interested in modeling, analysis, and simulation of micro devices of microbiology. The book contains exercises and worked out examples throughout.

Lattice Methods for Multiple Integration (Hardcover): I.H. Sloan, S. Joe Lattice Methods for Multiple Integration (Hardcover)
I.H. Sloan, S. Joe
R3,023 Discovery Miles 30 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first book devoted to lattice methods, a recently developed way of calculating multiple integrals in many variables. Multiple integrals of this kind arise in fields such as quantum physics and chemistry, statistical mechanics, Bayesian statistics and many others. Lattice methods are an effective tool when the number of integrals are large. The book begins with a review of existing methods before presenting lattice theory in a thorough, self-contained manner, with numerous illustrations and examples. Group and number theory are included, but the treatment is such that no prior knowledge is needed. Not only the theory but the practical implementation of lattice methods is covered. An algorithm is presented alongside tables not available elsewhere, which together allow the practical evaluation of multiple integrals in many variables. Most importantly, the algorithm produces an error estimate in a very efficient manner. The book also provides a fast track for readers wanting to move rapidly to using lattice methods in practical calculations. It concludes with extensive numerical tests which compare lattice methods with other methods, such as the Monte Carlo.

Reinhard Racke
R3,419 Discovery Miles 34 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book mainly serves as an elementary, self-contained introduction to several important aspects of the theory of global solutions to initial value problems for nonlinear evolution equations. The book employs the classical method of continuation of local solutions with the help of a priori estimates obtained for small data. The existence and uniqueness of small, smooth solutions that are defined for all values of the time parameter are investigated. Moreover, the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions is described as time tends to infinity. The methods for nonlinear wave equations are discussed in detail. Other examples include the equations of elasticity, heat equations, the equations of thermoelasticity, Schroedinger equations, Klein-Gordon equations, Maxwell equations and plate equations. To emphasize the importance of studying the conditions under which small data problems offer global solutions, some blow-up results are briefly described. Moreover, the prospects for corresponding initial boundary value problems and for open questions are provided. In this second edition, initial-boundary value problems in waveguides are additionally considered.
