Cardiovascular Psychophysiology - Current Issues in Response Mechanisms, Biofeedback and Methodology (Paperback): Paul A.... Cardiovascular Psychophysiology - Current Issues in Response Mechanisms, Biofeedback and Methodology (Paperback)
Paul A. Obrist, A.H. Black, Jasper Brener, Leo V. DiCara
R1,619 Discovery Miles 16 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The literature relating to the learned control of autonomic processes, especially cardiovascular processes demonstrating that the activities of visceral response systems may be modified by operant reinforcement and biofeedback procedures, has grown exponentially. This research seems to show behavioral properties in the cardiovascular system that were previously believed to be exclusive attributes of the somatic response systems; the implications of this for possible therapeutic use have received widespread publicity. Questions remained unanswered--about the nature of "voluntary" control and the conditions necessary for establishing it, the reciprocal effects of conditioned changes in cardiovascular and psychological or behavioral functioning, the use of cardiovascular events to index behavioral states, and the principles and techniques whereby operant conditioning of the cardiovascular system can be clinically applied.

This book contains original essays by leading authorities on the subject. When originally published, it represented the first comprehensive overview of the entire field of cardiovascular psychophysiology. It begins with three chapters that provide an overview of the subject and the major contemporary measurement techniques. Part II contains six experimental studies of cardiovascular function dealing with the interactive nature of cardiovascular and behavioral events.

This book serves as a benchmark for all future research in cardiovascular psychophysiology, and as such it will be of continuing interest to advanced students, researchers, scholars, and teachers in the fields of psychophysiology, psychiatry, cardiology, and biomedical engineering.

Advances in Quantitative Coronary Arteriography (Hardcover): Johan H.C. Reiber, Patrick W. Serruys Advances in Quantitative Coronary Arteriography (Hardcover)
Johan H.C. Reiber, Patrick W. Serruys
R2,496 Discovery Miles 24 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume is the fourth in a series on quantitative coronary arteriography (QCA) published over the last seven years. Every two years the advances in this exciting field are presented by their leading experts. Percutaneous Mitral Leaflet Repair - MitraClip Therapy for Mitral Regurgitation (Paperback): Ted Feldman Percutaneous Mitral Leaflet Repair - MitraClip Therapy for Mitral Regurgitation (Paperback)
Ted Feldman
R1,433 Discovery Miles 14 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Mitral regurgitation (MR) affects millions of patients worldwide. It is a progressive condition that can worsen when left untreated, possibly leading to compensatory remodeling of the left ventricle. This can result in reduced functional capacity, poor quality of life, repeat hospitalizations, and even death from heart failure. Open, arrested heart surgery has until now been the therapeutic treatment of choice. However, many high-risk patients cannot tolerate traditional heart surgery and continue to suffer from severe MR. In Percutaneous Mitral Leaflet Repair: MitraClip Therapy for Mitral Regurgitation, international experts discuss the clinical application of percutaneous mitral valve therapies for this subsect of patients, focusing on the MitraClip device. These new therapeutic developments will form an essential component of the interventional cardiologists' armamentarium in treating MR patients and will be of interest to every practicing cardiologist. Key topics include: An overview of the anatomy and pathophysiology of the mitral valvular complex and MR EVEREST trial outcomes, and the development of percutaneous edge-to-edge repair Updates on the global experience with this new therapy Patient selection and the role of percutaneous therapies for high-risk patients Echocardiographic guidance, including practical tips for the use of transesophageal echocardiography during a procedure Step-by-step techniques, plus tips and tricks for getting the best results for your patients Special considerations for treating the returning MR repair patient Discussion of the European experience since CE approval Future directions in percutaneous mitral valve therapies

Pathology of Sudden Cardiac Death - An Illustrated Guide (Hardcover): BS Edwards Pathology of Sudden Cardiac Death - An Illustrated Guide (Hardcover)
BS Edwards
R2,785 Discovery Miles 27 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sudden cardiac death represents a highly heterogeneous group of cardiovascular disorders. While some may initially think of sudden death as primarily an arrhythmogenic event, this actually represents the minority of cases of sudden cardiac death. In the vast majority of cases, there is an underlying anatomic disorder of the cardiovascular system responsible for the ultimate hemodynamic collapse known as sudden cardiac death. This book will provide an atlas type review of ischemic and non-ischemic etiologies of sudden cardiac death. Beyond the atlas, however, will be a "clinical pathologic correlation" for each described disorder providing practicing clinicians with practical information to facilitate proper diagnosis and treatment. While an increasing array of noninvasive diagnostic tools continue to develop, the sad fact remains that many of the physicians and operators of these new diagnostic modalities have never actually seen specimens which demonstrate the fundamental pathologic abnormalities. This ability to see first hand the underlying pathology creates an opportunity to advance the science and enhance ones understanding of these disease processes. There is not a comprehensive text on this subject on the market today which provides clinical and patholigical material in such a comprehensive manner.

Perceived Exertion Laboratory Manual - From Standard Practice to Contemporary Application (Hardcover): Luke Haile, Michael... Perceived Exertion Laboratory Manual - From Standard Practice to Contemporary Application (Hardcover)
Luke Haile, Michael Gallagher, Jr., Robert J Robertson
R2,763 R1,998 Discovery Miles 19 980 Save R765 (28%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This manual provides laboratory-based learning experiences in perceptually and psychosocially linked exercise assessment, prescription, and programming. The primary pedagogic outcome is the ability to use applied theory and practice in perceptual and psychosocial exercise assessment and program design to promote the adoption and maintenance of a physically active lifestyle, enhancing overall health fitness. Perceptual and psychosocial variables are presented in individual, stand-alone laboratory modules that can supplement existing curricula such as exercise and sport psychology, exercise physiology, exercise testing and prescription, and exercise training and conditioning. In addition, the complete modular set has a conceptual flow that allows its presentation as an entire, laboratory-based course. The laboratory modules are divided into three primary units: assessment (theoretical constructs, scales and procedures, tests), prescription (self-regulation, performance), and program evaluation. The manual uses a unique format in which case studies are embedded in the conceptual flow of each lab module facilitating translation of laboratory results to real-world application. The manual concludes with a discussion of perceptually and psychosocially linked exercise prescription and programming applications in public health, such as program monitoring and adherence.
