Inflammation and Natural Products brings together research in the
area of the natural products and their anti-inflammatory action in
medical, nutraceutical and food products, addressing specific
chronic inflammatory diseases like cancer and the mechanistic
aspects of the mode of action of some key natural products.
Inflammation is a complicated process, driven by infection or
injury or genetic changes, which results in triggering signalling
cascades, activation of transcription factors, gene expression,
increased levels of inflammatory enzymes, and release of various
oxidants and pro-inflammatory molecules in inflammatory cells.
Excessive oxidants and inflammatory mediators have a harmful effect
on normal tissue, including toxicity, loss of barrier function,
abnormal cell proliferation, inhibiting normal function of tissues
and organs and finally leading to systemic disorders. The emerging
development of natural product formulations utilizing the unique
anti-inflammatory compounds such as polyphenols, polysaccharides,
terpenes, fatty acids, proteins and several other bioactive
components has shown notable successes. Inflammation and Natural
Products: Recent Development and Current Status provides a
comprehensive resource, ranging from detailed explanation on
inflammation to molecular docking strategies for naturally
occurring compounds with anti-inflammatory activity. It is useful
for graduate students, academic and professionals in the fields of
pharmaceutical and medical sciences and specialists from natural
product-related industries.
COULD STATIN DRUGS ACTUALLY HARM YOU?
Despite the rosy picture painted in the ads of a miracle cure for
high cholesterol and its attendant heart disease, the reality of
taking statins may be far less pretty. Dr. Barbara H. Roberts,
director of the Women's Cardiac Center at the Miriam Hospital in
Rhode Island, discusses both the benefits and health risks of these
popular drugs in this comprehensive guide that finally reveals the
questionable science behind the research studies. This honest,
patient-friendly appraisal of the most widely used medications in
the world may shock you, but it may also save your life.
Offering clear-cut, easy-to-understand information in an easily
accessible fashion, Dr. Roberts explains how to take the best
possible care of your heart, including:
* The keys to maintaining cardiovascular well-being
* How to interpret your cholesterol numbers
* The frightening adverse effects of popular drugs
It is time to take charge of your heart health. Learn the facts
behind the hype so that you can make informed decisions on a
subject vital to your continued health. If you or someone you love
either takes a statin or is considering doing so, you need to read
this book.
Includes recipes for a delicious and heart-healthy diet, including
Wasabi-Roasted Salmon, Pasta with Avocado Sauce, and
Lemon-Pineapple Breakfast Muffins.
The Understanding Angina chart is a detailed overview of the types,
causes, symptoms and treatment options of angina. Images include
external views of a damaged heart, showing ischemia and a narrowed
artey, and the heart's blood supply. Heavy gauge 3ml lamination
with sealed edges and two metal eyelets for hanging makes chart
highly durable. Write-on/wipe-off with dry erase marker (not
included).

This extension to the popular "ECGs for the Emergency Physician
Volume 1 "continues to provide the emergency health care provider
with outstanding practical and emergency medicine-relevant teaching
of a life-saving skill: emergency electrocardiography
interpretation.
This volume can be used individually or paired with Volume 1 to
present one of the most comprehensive and educational ECG
collections ever assembled for emergency physicians and other acute
health care providers.
Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome (WPW) is recognized as an
abnormality of cardiac rhythm that manifests as supraventricular
tachycardia. Few practitioners today appreciate how much the
development of clinical cardiac electrophysiology owes to
Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome. In the early 1960s, it became the
test bed for electrophysiological theory and new therapies.
Surgical electrophysiological techniques were developed, the
pathways were severed, and the patient was often left with an
entirely normal heart. This was an important first in modern
cardiology - a complete cure. The aim of the Clinical Approaches to
Tachyarryhthmias series is to update the physician, cardiologist,
and all those responsible for the the care of patients with cardiac
arrhythmias. In this volume, the authors unfold the story of WPW,
its precise diagnosis by use of electrocardiography, its successful
management and its near extinction in parts of the world reached by
modern medical technology, and the remaining challenge it
represents in pediatric medicine and in other parts of the globe.
Reviews of previous editions: "...a well conceived practical guide
to the interpretation and treatment of the main cardiac rhythm
disturbances." Lancet "This book presents a concise and simplified
approach to the diagnosis and management of abnormalities in
cardiac rhythm...One of the book's strengths is the number and
quality of electrocardiographic tracings" New England Journal of
Medicine "...this book provides an excellent foundation for all
those involved in the care of arrhythmia patients" British Journal
of Hospital Medicine " would recommend it unreservedly to
anaesthetists who wish to improve their knowledge of cardiac
arrhythmias" British Journal of Anaesthesia "This book about
cardiac arrhythmias is of much educational value" European Heart
Journal A trusted source for junior doctors, students, nurses and
cardiac technicians for over 30 years, the new edition of this
classic reference continues the winning formula of previous
editions while at the same time incorporating essential new content
on today's most important clinical topics, including: * Atrial
fibrillation: ablation, drugs, rate control versus rhythm control,
risk of systemic embolism, prognosis * Indications for and
management of implantable defibrillators including complications
such as arrhythmia storms * Indications for pacemaker implantation
* Anticoagulant therapy (for atrial fibrillation) * Long QT
syndromes and other channelopathies * Recently-approved
anti-arrhythmia drugs The 8th edition also features the latest
guidelines on ECG screening of athletes and clear guidance for
anaesthetists and surgeons dealing with patients with arrhythmias
an/or implantable devices. Rich with example ECGs and designed for
ease of access to information, Bennett's Cardiac Arrhythmias is the
reference you can trust to help you master arrhythmia diagnosis and
provide optimal treatment of any patient under your care.
Hemodynamic monitoring is one of the major diagnostic tools
available in the acute care setting to diagnose cardiovascular
insufficiency and monitor changes over time in response to
interventions. However, the rationale and efficacy of hemodynamic
monitoring to affect outcome has come into question. We now have
increasing evidence that outcome from critical illness can be
improved by focused resuscitation based on existing hemodynamic
monitoring, whereas non-specific aggressive resuscitation impairs
survival. Thus, this book frames hemodynamic monitoring into a
functional perspective wherein hemodynamic variables and physiology
interact to derive performance and physiological reserve estimates
that themselves drive treatment. This philosophy, as well as the
limitations and applications of common and evolving hemodynamic
measures and their focused use in the care of critically ill
patients are discussed, relevant to one underlying truth: No
monitoring device, no matter how simple or sophisticated, will
improve patient-centered outcomes useless coupled to a treatment
which, itself, improves outcome.
Sitting an accreditation examination is a daunting prospect for
many trainee echocardiographers. And with an increasing drive for
the accreditation of echocardiography laboratories and individual
echocardiographers, there is a need for an all-encompassing
revision aid for those seeking accreditation. The editors of this
unique book have produced the only echocardiography revision aid
based on the syllabus and format of the British Society of
Echocardiography (BSE) national echocardiography accreditation
examination and similar examinations administered across Europe.
Written by BSE accredited members, fully endorsed by the BSE, and
with a foreword by BSE past-president, DR. Simon Ray, this
indispensable guide provides a valuable insight into how
echocardiography accreditation exams are structured. Crucially, to
support students with the more challenging video section of the
exam, a companion website provides video cases, and with clear and
concisely-structured explanations to all questions, this is an
essential tool for anyone preparing to sit an echocardiography
examination.
