Genetics of Dyslipidemia (Hardcover): Pascale Benlian Genetics of Dyslipidemia (Hardcover)
Pascale Benlian
R4,186 Discovery Miles 41 860 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

Profound mortality rates, due to cardiovascular disease, are a worldwide problem. Cardiovascular disease results from complications of a silent and chronic arterial disease: atherosclerosis. The challenge for the practitioner is adapting diagnostic and therapeutic responses to prevent this common and complex disease. Dyslipidemia, are disorders of the metabolism of soluble transporters of lipids in extracellular spaces of the human body (including blood), called lipoproteins. They are major cardiovascular risk factors, causally related with atherosclerosis and are themselves multifactorial diseases, resulting from interactions between genetic and environmental factors. The study of genetic factors has recently taken a new path with the study of DNA as an experimental object. More than fifty genes of lipoprotein metabolism have been identified in both their physiological actions and their contribution to the pathogenesis of human dyslipidemia. The diversity of observations has refined our current knowledge of the control of lipid metabolism and energy homeostasis in living organisms beyond the limits of the cardiovascular system (e.g., brain, immune system, and development). These studies have given way to a shake-up of former phenotypic classifications, distinguishing new entities, defining targeted therapeutic strategies, providing a basis for different patterns of disease distribution in human populations.

Surgical Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation: A Comprehensive Guide to Performing the Cox-Maze IV Procedure is the first all-inclusive description of this rapidly growing surgery, setting the standard in the field. The Cox-Maze IV procedure is a complex surgery, and its success depends critically on correct execution. With FDA approval, the first RF ablation device for treatment of the Cox-Maze IV procedure has become more important than ever to combine scientific information for the procedure with its connection to human application. This comprehensive text provides step-by-step instructions from an experienced Cox-Maze IV surgeon and is written in the style of a mentor advising his mentee in the operating room. It contains over a dozen lessons described in detail, with illustrations, photographs and a discussion of possible complications and appropriate ways to deal with them. Additionally, the book describes sequencing for the surgeries that are typically performed concomitant with the Cox-Maze IV procedure, determining the optimal way to combine surgeries. Cardiac surgeons, fellows in cardiac surgery, medical students inclined toward cardiac surgery and cardiology researchers will find this book to be of great importance to their work.

Nicole M. Farmer, Andres V. Ardisson Korat
R1,472 Discovery Miles 14 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Poor diet and substandard nutrition are underlying causes of many diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. Collectively, these ailments are the leading causes of premature death, most of which are preventable. Cooking for Health and Disease Prevention: From the Kitchen to the Clinic helps demonstrate cooking as a fundamental bridge between ideal nutrition and long-term health. Clinicians, patients, and the public often lack adequate knowledge to help select and prepare foods for optimal disease management. This book provides information to clinicians and their patients about foods and cooking principles to help prevent common health conditions. Features: Focuses on disease endpoints, reviewing the disease biology and epidemiology and presenting dietary interventions for disease prevention. Provides recommendations for translating dietary and culinary principles of health prevention into clinical practice and includes a recipe appendix with practical examples. Features information on healthy cooking techniques as well as food selection, storage, and preparation to help maximize nutritional value. Introduces the reader to fundamental concepts in nutrition and culinary principles explaining the relationship between food processing and food preparation and nutritional quality of foods. This book is accessible to patients and offers evidence-based practical interventions for healthcare professionals. It is authored by Nicole Farmer, physician scientist at the NIH Clinical Center, and nutrition researcher Andres Ardisson Korat, awarded a doctorate degree in nutrition and epidemiology from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Transcatheter Valve Repair (Hardcover): Ziyad M. Hijazi, Carlos E. Ruiz, Philipp Bonhoeffer, Ted Feldman Transcatheter Valve Repair (Hardcover)
Ziyad M. Hijazi, Carlos E. Ruiz, Philipp Bonhoeffer, Ted Feldman
R5,524 Discovery Miles 55 240 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

Transcatheter Valve Repair discusses all aspects related to percutaneous and established valve repair methods. The book is divided into few major sections covering all four valves and other topics. Each section contains several chapters discussing everything related to that valve. Beginning with the pulmonary valve, since it was the first valve to be tackled in the catheterization laboratory, and then moving to the aortic, then the mitral and then finally end with the tricuspid valve. 1.5M US citizens alone have some degree of aortic valve stenosis, with half (750K) requiring aortic valve replacement. Aortic valve replacement, on the whole, is performed by surgeons, requiring bypass machines and technicians, as well as the usual operating team. The operation is expensive and occupies a considerable amount of operating room time. Mostly, the aortic valve is calcified and the usual option available to patients is valve replacement with a variety of choices, ranging from porcine valves to synthetic, for which there are many manufacturers. It should be noted that the aortic valve is the most problematic of valves. Percutaneous procedures are the answer. The bottom line is that given the growing elderly population, many more patients will require valve repair, thus increasing health care costs with not only surgical operations but also hospitalisation. Percutanous valve repair, whilst requiring a cath lab team, does not involve bypass machines nor extended hospitalisation. Like percutaneous transluminal coronary artery interventions (PTCA) has replaced coronary artery bypass grafts (once the golden standard), and now stenting having replaced PTCA and its balloons. We now see drug eluting stents replacing ordinary stents (though at a much higher cost. There will be a huge movement toward percutanous valve repair, which should presumably cut costs but also morbidity and mortality.
