Automatic Modulation Recognition of Communication Signals (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): Elsayed Azzouz, A. K. Nandi Automatic Modulation Recognition of Communication Signals (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
Elsayed Azzouz, A. K. Nandi
R5,268 Discovery Miles 52 680 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Automatic modulation recognition is a rapidly evolving area of signal analysis. In recent years, interest from the academic and military research institutes has focused around the research and development of modulation recognition algorithms. Any communication intelligence (COMINT) system comprises three main blocks: receiver front-end, modulation recogniser and output stage. Considerable work has been done in the area of receiver front-ends. The work at the output stage is concerned with information extraction, recording and exploitation and begins with signal demodulation, that requires accurate knowledge about the signal modulation type. There are, however, two main reasons for knowing the current modulation type of a signal; to preserve the signal information content and to decide upon the suitable counter action, such as jamming. Automatic Modulation Recognition of Communications Signals describes in depth this modulation recognition process. Drawing on several years of research, the authors provide a critical review of automatic modulation recognition. This includes techniques for recognising digitally modulated signals. The book also gives comprehensive treatment of using artificial neural networks for recognising modulation types. Automatic Modulation Recognition of Communications Signals is the first comprehensive book on automatic modulation recognition. It is essential reading for researchers and practising engineers in the field. It is also a valuable text for an advanced course on the subject.

Nonsmooth/Nonconvex Mechanics - Modeling, Analysis and Numerical Methods (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): David Yang Gao, Raymond W.... Nonsmooth/Nonconvex Mechanics - Modeling, Analysis and Numerical Methods (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
David Yang Gao, Raymond W. Ogden, Georgios E. Stavroulakis
R2,933 Discovery Miles 29 330 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Nonsmoothness and nonconvexity arise in numerous applications of mechan- ics and modeling due to the need for studying more and more complicated phe- nomena and real life applications. Mathematicians have started to provide the necessary tools and theoretical results underpinning these applications. Ap- plied mathematicians and engineers have begun to realize the benefits of this new area and are adopting, increasingly, these new tools in their work. New computational tools facilitate numerical applications and enable the theory to be tested, and the resulting feedback poses new theoretical questions. Because of the upsurge in activity in the area of nonsmooth and noncon- vex mechanics, Professors Gao and Ogden, together with the late Professor P.D. Panagiotopoulos, had planned to organize a Minisymposium with the title Nonsmooth and Nonconvex Mechanics within the ASME 1999 Mechanics & Materials Conference, June 27-30 1999, Blacksburg, Virginia. After the unex- pected death of Professor Panagiotopoulos the first two editors invited the third editor (Professor Stavroulakis) to join them. A large number of mathematical and engineering colleagues supported our efforts by presenting lectures at the Minisymposium in which the available mathematical methods were described and many problems of nonsmooth and nonconvex mechanics were discussed. The interest of the many participants encourages us all to continue our research efforts.

Standing waves, harmonics and resonance are explained in simple terms, using graphics that provide a visual understanding.

Soft Computing in Acoustics - Applications of Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic and Rough Sets to Musical Acoustics (Hardcover, 1999... Soft Computing in Acoustics - Applications of Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic and Rough Sets to Musical Acoustics (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
Bozena Kostek
R2,790 Discovery Miles 27 900 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Applications of some selected soft computing methods to acoustics and sound engineering are presented in this book. The aim of this research study is the implementation of soft computing methods to musical signal analysis and to the recognition of musical sounds and phrases. Accordingly, some methods based on such learning algorithms as neural networks, rough sets and fuzzy-logic were conceived, implemented and tested. Additionally, the above-mentioned methods were applied to the analysis and verification of subjective testing results. The last problem discussed within the framework of this book was the problem of fuzzy control of the classical pipe organ instrument.
The obtained results show that computational intelligence and soft computing may be used for solving some vital problems in both musical and architectural acoustics.

Dynamics of Gambling: Origins of Randomness in Mechanical Systems (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Jaroslaw Strzalko, Juliusz Grabski,... Dynamics of Gambling: Origins of Randomness in Mechanical Systems (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Jaroslaw Strzalko, Juliusz Grabski, Przemyslaw Perlikowski, Andrzej Stefanski, Tomasz Kapitaniak
R1,407 Discovery Miles 14 070 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Our everyday life is in?uenced by many unexpected (dif?cult to predict) events usually referred as a chance. Probably, we all are as we are due to the accumulation point of a multitude of chance events. Gambling games that have been known to human beings nearly from the beginning of our civilization are based on chance events. These chance events have created the dream that everybody can easily become rich. This pursuit made gambling so popular. This book is devoted to the dynamics of the mechanical randomizers and we try to solve the problem why mechanical device (roulette) or a rigid body (a coin or a die) operating in the way described by the laws of classical mechanics can behave in such a way and produce a pseudorandom outcome. During mathematical lessons in primary school we are taught that the outcome of the coin tossing experiment is random and that the probability that the tossed coin lands heads (tails) up is equal to 1/2. Approximately, at the same time during physics lessons we are told that the motion of the rigid body (coin is an example of suchabody)isfullydeterministic. Typically, studentsarenotgiventheanswertothe question Why this duality in the interpretation of the simple mechanical experiment is possible? Trying to answer this question we describe the dynamics of the gambling games based on the coin toss, the throw of the die, and the roulette run.

Introduction to Soliton Theory: Applications to Mechanics (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): Ligia Munteanu, Stefania Donescu Introduction to Soliton Theory: Applications to Mechanics (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
Ligia Munteanu, Stefania Donescu
R4,048 Discovery Miles 40 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This monograph is planned to provide the application of the soliton theory to solve certain practical problems selected from the fields of solid mechanics, fluid mechanics and biomechanics. The work is based mainly on the authors' research carried out at their home institutes, and on some specified, significant results existing in the published literature. The methodology to study a given evolution equation is to seek the waves of permanent form, to test whether it possesses any symmetry properties, and whether it is stable and solitonic in nature. Students of physics, applied mathematics, and engineering are usually exposed to various branches of nonlinear mechanics, especially to the soliton theory. The soliton is regarded as an entity, a quasi-particle, which conserves its character and interacts with the surroundings and other solitons as a particle. It is related to a strange phenomenon, which consists in the propagation of certain waves without attenuation in dissipative media. This phenomenon has been known for about 200 years (it was described, for example, by the Joule Verne's novel Les histoires de Jean Marie Cabidoulin, Ed. Hetzel), but its detailed quantitative description became possible only in the last 30 years due to the exceptional development of computers. The discovery of the physical soliton is attributed to John Scott Russell. In 1834, Russell was observing a boat being drawn along a narrow channel by a pair of horses."

Dynamics of Droplets (Hardcover, 2000 ed.): Arnold Frohn, Norbert Roth Dynamics of Droplets (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
Arnold Frohn, Norbert Roth
R4,851 Discovery Miles 48 510 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Intended to provide an up-to-date overview of the field, this book is also likely to become a standard work of reference on the science of droplets. Beginning with the theoretical background important for droplet dynamics, it continues with a presentation of the various methods for generating single droplets and regular droplet systems. Also included is a detailed description of the experimental methods employed in droplet research. A special chapter is devoted to the various types of droplet interactions without phase transition. A separate chapter then treats many examples of the possible phase transition processes. The final part of the book gives a summary of important applications. With its comprehensive content, this book will be of interest to all scientists and lecturers concerned with two-phase flow, spray technology, heterogeneous combustion, and aerosol science.

Principles of Marine Bioacoustics (Hardcover, 2008 ed.): Whitlow W.L. Au, Mardi C. Hastings Principles of Marine Bioacoustics (Hardcover, 2008 ed.)
Whitlow W.L. Au, Mardi C. Hastings
R4,634 R3,716 Discovery Miles 37 160 Save R918 (20%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Humans have always been fascinated by marine life, from extremely small diatoms to the largest mammal that inhabits our planet, the blue whale. However, studying marine life in the ocean is an extremely difficult propo- tion because an ocean environment is not only vast but also opaque to most instruments and can be a hostile environment in which to perform expe- ments and research. The use of acoustics is one way to effectively study animal life in the ocean. Acoustic energy propagates in water more efficiently than almost any form of energy and can be utilized by animals for a variety of purposes and also by scientists interested in studying their behavior and natural history. However, underwater acoustics have traditionally been in the domain of physicists, engineers and mathematicians. Studying the natural history of animals is in the domain of biologists and physiologists. Und- standing behavior of animals has traditionally involved psychologists and zoologists. In short, marine bioacoustics is and will continue to be a diverse discipline involving investigators from a variety of backgrounds, with very different knowledge and skill sets. The inherent inter-disciplinary nature of marine bioacoustics presents a large challenge in writing a single text that would be meaningful to various investigators and students interested in this field. Yet we have embarked on this challenge to produce a volume that would be helpful to not only beginning investigators but to seasoned researchers.

Tubes, Sheets and Singularities in Fluid Dynamics - Proceedings of the NATO ARW held in Zakopane, Poland, 2-7 September 2001,... Tubes, Sheets and Singularities in Fluid Dynamics - Proceedings of the NATO ARW held in Zakopane, Poland, 2-7 September 2001, Sponsored as an IUTAM Symposium by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
K. Bajer, H. K. Moffatt
R4,084 Discovery Miles 40 840 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Modern experiments and numerical simulations show that the long-known coherent structures in turbulence take the form of elongated vortex tubes and vortex sheets. The evolution of vortex tubes may result in spiral structures which can be associated with the spectral power laws of turbulence. The mutual stretching of skewed vortex tubes, when they are close to each other, causes rapid growth of vorticity. Whether this process may or may not lead to a finite-time singularity is one of the famous open problems of fluid dynamics.

This book contains the proceedings of the NATO ARW and IUTAM Symposium held in Zakopane, Poland, 2-7 September 2001. The papers presented, carefully reviewed by the International Scientific Committee, cover various aspects of the dynamics of vortex tubes and sheets and of their analogues in magnetohydrodynamics and in quantum turbulence. The book should be a useful reference for all researchers and students of modern fluid dynamics.

Rational Extended Thermodynamics beyond the Monatomic Gas (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015): Tommaso Ruggeri, Masaru Sugiyama Rational Extended Thermodynamics beyond the Monatomic Gas (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Tommaso Ruggeri, Masaru Sugiyama
R3,509 Discovery Miles 35 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is dedicated to the recent developments in RET with the aim to explore polyatomic gas, dense gas and mixture of gases in non-equilibrium. In particular we present the theory of dense gases with 14 fields, which reduces to the Navier-Stokes Fourier classical theory in the parabolic limit. Molecular RET with an arbitrary number of field-variables for polyatomic gases is also discussed and the theory is proved to be perfectly compatible with the kinetic theory in which the distribution function depends on an extra variable that takes into account a molecule's internal degrees of freedom. Recent results on mixtures of gases with multi-temperature are presented together with a natural definition of the average temperature. The qualitative analysis and in particular, the existence of the global smooth solution and the convergence to equilibrium are also studied by taking into account the fact that the differential systems are symmetric hyperbolic. Applications to shock and sound waves are analyzed together with light scattering and heat conduction and the results are compared with experimental data. Rational extended thermodynamics (RET) is a thermodynamic theory that is applicable to non-equilibrium phenomena. It is described by differential hyperbolic systems of balance laws with local constitutive equations. As RET has been strictly related to the kinetic theory through the closure method of moment hierarchy associated to the Boltzmann equation, the applicability range of the theory has been restricted within rarefied monatomic gases. The book represents a valuable resource for applied mathematicians, physicists and engineers, offering powerful models for potential applications like satellites reentering the atmosphere, semiconductors and nano-scale phenomena.

High-Pressure Shock Compression of Solids VII - Shock Waves and Extreme States of Matter (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): Vladimir E.... High-Pressure Shock Compression of Solids VII - Shock Waves and Extreme States of Matter (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
Vladimir E. Fortov, L. V. Altshuler, R. F. Trunin, A. I. Funtikov
R5,441 Discovery Miles 54 410 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Presenting some of the most recent results of Russian research into shock compression, as well as historical overviews of the Russian research programs into shock compression, this volume will provide Western researchers with many novel ideas and points of view. The chapters in this volume are written by leading Russian specialists various fields of high-pressure physics and form accounts of the main researches on the behavior of matter under shock-wave interaction. The experimental portions contain results of studies of shock compression of metals to high and ultra-high pressure, shock initiation of polymorphic transformations, strength, fracture and fragmentation under shock compression, and detonation of condensed explosives. There are also chapters on theoretical investigations of shock-wave compression and plasma states in regimes of high-pressure and high- temperature. The topics of the book are of interest to scientists and engineers concerned with questions of material behavior under impulsive loading and to the equation of state of matter. Application is to questions of high-speed impact, inner composition of planets, verification of model representations of material behavior under extreme 1oading conditions, syntheses of new materials, development of new technologies for material processing, etc. Russian research differs from much of the Western work in that it has traditionally been wider-ranging and more directed to extremes of response than to precise characterization of specific materials and effects. Western scientists could expect to benefit from the perspective gained from close knowledge of the Russian work.

This book considers signal processing and physical modeling meth ods for sound synthesis. Such methods are useful for example in mu sic synthesizers, computer sound cards, and computer games. Physical modeling synthesis has been commercialized for the first time about 10 years ago. Recently, it has been one of the most active research topics in musical acoustics and computer music. The authors of this book, Dr. Lutz Trautmann and Dr. Rudolf Rabenstein, are active researchers and inventors in the field of sound synthesis. Together they have developed a new synthesis technique, called the functional transformation method, which can be used for pro ducing musical sound in real time. Before this book, they have published over 20 papers on the topic in journals and conference proceedings. In this excellent textbook, the results are combined in a single volume. I believe that this will be considered an important step forward for the whole community."

Classical and Quantum Aspects of Gravity in Relation to the Emergent Paradigm (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Sumanta Chakraborty Classical and Quantum Aspects of Gravity in Relation to the Emergent Paradigm (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Sumanta Chakraborty
R4,034 Discovery Miles 40 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This thesis explores the connection between gravity and thermodynamics and provides a unification scheme that opens up new directions of exploration. Further elaborating on the Hawking effect and the possibility of singularity avoidance, the author not only discusses the information loss paradox at a broader level but also provides a possible solution to it. As the final frontier, it describes some novel effects arising from the microscopic structure of spacetime. Taken as a whole, the thesis addresses three major research areas in gravitational physics: it starts with classical gravity, proceeds to the black hole information loss paradox, and closes with Planck scale physics. The thesis is written in a lucid and pedagogical style, with an introduction accessible to researchers from other branches of physics and a d iscussion presenting open questions and future directions, which will benefit and hopefully inspire next-generation researchers.
