This important volume provides a comprehensive overview of
hepatotoxicity and medicinal plants used for protecting the liver
and for curing liver toxicity and liver diseases. To date, there
has been no extensive resource on the plants that are used in this
capacity, both in traditional medicine and in modern medicine. This
book fills that gap. It presents information on the medicinal
plants used in traditional medicine (both codified and noncodified)
and in ethnomedicine, including the plant parts used and methods of
use and dosages. The phytochemicals extracted from medicinal
plants, screened and used in modern medicine for liver protection
and curing liver problems, are given in detail, and the methods of
screening are given as well. Methods of assay for screening the
medicinal plants are also presented. Key features: * Provides
complete information on plants that show hepatoprotective
properties * Lists and discusses the phytochemicals useful for
liver protection and cures * Considers traditional uses and
ethnomedicinal plants for liver protection * Details the plant
parts and the extracts that have protection properties and the
active principles showing hepatoprotection
This is a contributed text on traditional medicines throughout the
world. Almost 20 years ago the World Health Organization estimated
that 'In many countries, 80 per cent or more of the population
living in rural areas are cared for by traditional practitioners
and birth attendants'. It has since revised its view, adopting a
rather safer position, now stating: 'most of the population of most
developing countries regularly use traditional medicine'. Whereas
most people use traditional medicine in developing countries, only
a minority have regular access to reliable modern medical services.
Countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America use traditional
medicine (TM) to help meet some of their primary health care needs.
In Africa, up to 80 per cent of the population uses traditional
medicine for primary health care. In industrialized countries,
adaptations of traditional medicine are termed 'Complementary' or
'Alternative' (CAM). Over one-third of the population in developing
countries lack access to essential medicines. The provision of safe
and effective traditional medicine therapies could become a
critical tool to increase access to health care.
This research volume examines the available alternative,
complementary, pharmaceutical and vaccine methods for treating,
mitigating, or preventing COVID-19. Coverage includes traditional
Chinese medicine, herbal remedies, nutraceutical/dietary options,
and drug/vaccine therapies. All the methods discussed will be
critically examined to provide readers with a full, unbiased
overview that includes pros/cons of each method. While the nature
of COVID-19 is still being studied, and new research and theories
are being published daily, this book endeavors to provide readers
with a comprehensive summary of current research on alternative and
mainstream treatment and prevention methods.
This book provides easy-to-understand, scientifically backed
answers to readers' questions about essential oils, helping them
make informed decisions about which products to use and how and
setting realistic expectations about what essential oils can and
cannot do to improve well-being. Many people use essential oils
regularly yet know very little about them. What exactly makes them
"essential"? Can they really be used to treat ailments like
infections, fevers, and sore throats? Is it safe to ingest them or
use them around children and pets? How can you tell if a company
selling essential oils is offering a low-quality product or
engaging in shady business practices? This book answers these and
many more questions about these popular yet often poorly understood
products. Books in Greenwood's Q&A Health Guides series follow
a reader-friendly question-and-answer format that anticipates
readers' needs and concerns. Prevalent myths and misconceptions are
identified and dispelled, and a collection of case studies
illustrate key concepts and issues through relatable stories and
insightful recommendations. Each book also includes a section on
health literacy, equipping teens and young adults with practical
tools and strategies for finding, evaluating, and using credible
sources of health information both on and off the
internet—important skills that contribute to a lifetime of
healthy decision-making.

While medical professionals continue to practice traditional
allopathic medicine, the public has turned toward nutritional and
integrative medical therapies, especially for addressing the
proliferation of chronic diseases. Written by leaders in the
academic and scientific world, Nutrition and Integrative Medicine:
A Primer for Clinicians presents various modalities to help restore
health. This book provides users with a guide to evaluating and
recommending nutritional and integrative therapies. The book offers
insights on the microbiome of the human body, examines the
relationship of human health to the microbiome of the food we
ingest, and introduces the concept of "food as information." It
provides enlightenment on anti-aging and healing modalities,
mind-body medicine, and an investigation of psychological trauma as
related to disease causation. Integrative therapies, including
water, light, and sound therapy, are explored, and information on
healing chronic disease through nutrition, the tooth-body
connection, the role of toxins in disease causation, and
electromagnetic field hypersensitivity, as well as its management,
is presented.

For those who want to make educated decisions about whether, and
when, to use natural products, this text explains the most current
scientific evidence of the roles that plants can play in our
health: how they can prevent, modify, or treat disease. Since
antiquity, humans have used botanicals to treat various conditions
affecting their organ systems, and this book is built around
explaining which plants may be used for major ailments affecting
the various systems. The increasing availability of botanicals on
the market, intended to be used as dietary supplements for health,
has been fueled by the public's demand for a more natural approach
to healthcare. Unfortunately, much of the information fed to the
public on alternatives is based on anecdotal evidence (case
stories), the advice of friends, or media features that often do
not stand up to standards for scientific evidence. In this book
Al-Achi explains current research and science that exists - or
remains lacking - for the various botanicals as healthcare
products. He also details the potential misuse and the dangers of
some herbal formulas. Photographs of 62 medicinal plants are
included.

Because of its evidentiary approach, this book may serve also as
a text for introductory college courses in the field of botanical
medicine, or as a supplemental general text for an alternative and
complementary medicine course. The history leading to the use of
botanicals in healthcare is described, as are botanicals used in
the treatment of cancer, cardiovascular disease, endocrine system
disorders such as diabetes, gastrointestinal problems, men's and
women's specific disorders, infections, chronic pain, psychological
disorders such as anxiety and depression, and other health
issues.
Drawing attention to the ways in which creative practices are
essential to the health, well-being, and healing of Indigenous
peoples, The Arts of Indigenous Health and Well-Being addresses the
effects of artistic endeavour on the "good life", or
mino-pimatisiwin in Cree, which can be described as the balanced
interconnection of physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental
well-being. In this interdisciplinary collection, Indigenous
knowledges inform an approach to health as a wider set of relations
that are central to well-being, wherein artistic expression
furthers cultural continuity and resilience, community connection,
and kinship to push back against forces of fracture and disruption
imposed by colonialism. The need for healing-not only individuals
but health systems and practices-is clear, especially as the trauma
of colonialism is continually revealed and perpetuated within
health systems. The field of Indigenous health has recently begun
to recognize the fundamental connection between creative expression
and well-being. This book brings together scholarship by humanities
scholars, social scientists, artists, and those holding
experiential knowledge from across Turtle Island to add urgently
needed perspectives to this conversation. Contributors embrace a
diverse range of research methods, including community-engaged
scholarship with Indigenous youth, artists, Elders, and language
keepers. The Arts of Indigenous Health and Well-Being demonstrates
the healing possibilities of Indigenous works of art, literature,
film, and music from a diversity of Indigenous peoples and arts
traditions. This book will resonate with health practitioners,
community members, and any who recognize the power of art as a
window, an entryway to access a healthy and good life.
Meridians are the bridge between the psyche and soma, the system
that allows our life force to flow through our body. Each of the
twelve main meridians stand for a fundamental life principle and by
examining them, we can begin a journey towards better health- as
well as freedom and contentment. In this inspirational,
easy-to-read deep dive, Mike Mandl uses his own wit and humour to
explore the life principles of the meridians and offers a toolbox
for self-diagnostic purposes, demonstrating how to strengthen these
principles, correct imbalances, and keep in harmony with yourself
through daily observation and maintenance. Translating the
principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine into an engaging,
accessible resource for practitioners and novices alike, this is
the perfect first step in harnessing the meridians for your own
self-actualisation.

between man and nature.
A musician's life is filled with many stressful situations: passing
auditions, rehearsing and performing with difficult partners,
sitting for long hours in uncomfortable chairs, going on stage to
face audiences large and small, who may or may not be receptive to
the performance they are presented. And yet many musicians are able
to surmount these looming obstacles with grace and balance, to find
satisfaction and artistry in their music and build productive and
lasting careers. Indirect Procedures will guide you around these
obstacles and along that path to becoming a balanced and successful
musician. Based on the work of Frederick Matthias Alexander, this
book is a thorough and practical approach to the issues of
musicians' health and wellbeing. Author Pedro de Alcantara
introduces concepts and exercises for musicians to let go of
excessive tensions, stay focused, and direct their energies as they
handle the challenges of practicing, rehearsing, and performing.
Complemented by an extensive, easy-to-use companion website, and
working alongside Integrated Practice, this new edition of Indirect
Procedures is an invaluable and essential resource for today's
musicians to learn to sing, play, and conduct with less effort and
stronger results.
Medicinal plants are globally valuable sources of herbal products.
Plant-based remedies have been used for centuries and have had no
alternative in the western medicine repertoire, while others and
their bioactive derivatives are in high demand and have been the
central focus of biomedical research. As Medicinal plants move from
fringe to mainstream with a greater number of individuals seeking
treatments free of side effects, considerable attention has been
paid to utilize plant-based products for the prevention and cure of
human diseases. An unintended consequence of this increased demand,
however, is that the existence of many medicinal plants is now
threatened, due to their small population size, narrow distribution
area, habitat specificity, and destructive mode of harvesting. In
addition, climate change, habitat loss and genetic drift have
further endangered these unique species. Although extensive
research has been carried out on medicinal and aromatic plants,
there is relatively little information available on their global
distribution patterns, conservation and the associated laws
prevailing. This book reviews the current status of threatened
medicinal plants in light of increased surge in the demand for
herbal medicine. It brings together chapters on both wild
(non-cultivated) and domestic (cultivated) species having
therapeutic values. Thematically, conventional and contemporary
approaches to conservation of such threatened medicinal plants with
commercial feasibility are presented. The topics of interest
include, but not limited to, biotechnology, sustainable
development, in situ and ex situ conservation, and even the
relevance of IPR on threatened medicinal plants. We believe this
book is useful to horticulturists, botanists, policy makers,
conservationists, NGOs and researchers in the academia and the
industry sectors.

The ultimate guide to the smells of the universe - the ambrosial to
the malodorous, and everything in between - from the author of the
acclaimed culinary guides On Food and Cooking and Keys to Good
Cooking From Harold McGee, James Beard Award-winning author and
leading expert on the science of food and cooking, comes an
extensive exploration of the long-overlooked world of smell. In
Nose Dive, McGee takes us on a sensory adventure, from the
sulfurous nascent earth more than four billion years ago, to the
fruit-filled Tian Shan mountain range north of the Himalayas, to
the keyboard of your laptop, where trace notes of phenol and
formaldehyde escape between the keys. We'll sniff the ordinary (wet
pavement and cut grass) and the extraordinary (ambergris and
truffles), the delightful (roses and vanilla) and the challenging
(swamplands and durians). We'll smell one another. We'll smell
ourselves. Through it all, McGee familiarizes us with the actual
bits of matter that we breathe in-the molecules that trigger our
perceptions, that prompt the citrusy smells of coriander and beer
and the medicinal smells of daffodils and sea urchins. And like
everything in the physical world, molecules have histories. Many of
the molecules that we smell every day existed long before any
creature was around to smell them-before there was even a planet
for those creatures to live on. Beginning with the origins of those
molecules in interstellar space, McGee moves onward through the
smells of our planet, the air and the oceans, the forest and the
meadows and the city, all the way to the smells of incense,
perfume, wine, and food. Here is a story of the world, of every
smell under our collective nose. A work of astounding scholarship
and originality, Nose Dive distills the science behind the smells
and translates it, as only McGee can, into an accessible and
entertaining guide. Incorporating the latest insights of biology
and chemistry, and interweaving them with personal observations, he
reveals how our sense of smell has the power to expose invisible,
intangible details of our material world and trigger in us feelings
that are the very essence of being alive.
This book discusses prospective alternative approaches to fight
bacterial infections to minimize the indiscriminate use of
conventional antibiotics. It offers the current knowledge on
research and development of alternative antibacterial agents such
as probiotics, nanobiotics etc. while it also discusses newly
emerging trends such as phage therapy, antibody therapy etc. The
book highlights on the phytochemicals with potent antibacterial
activities as alternatives to conventional antibiotics. Chemical
modification to develop next generation antibiotics with enhanced
efficacy has also been included. Such modifications are reported to
overcome the inherent resistance of the parent antibiotics. Phage
therapy and targeted antibodies are considered as potential
alternative approaches to treat bacterial ailments and represent
areas of cutting-edge research and have therefore been discussed
with sufficient care. Mainly, the book highlights various
approaches other than conventional antibiotics in treating
bacterial infections. The scientific advancements in these areas
will strengthen the 'One Health' approach benefiting human beings,
animals and environment as well. This book is a comprehensive
resource to cater researchers, biological scientists, herbalists
and clinical practitioners with up-to-date information on
antibacterials other than antibiotics.
