Nir Barzlai, M.D., founded the Institute for Aging Research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine over twenty years ago. His most fascinating study features a patient population of 600 centenarians - individuals who maintain active lives well into their 90s and 100s - and, more importantly, reached that milestone never having experienced the so-called big four: cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and cognitive decline. Dr. Barzlai identified three clusters of genetic mutations - connected to levels of cholesterol, growth hormones and peptides produced in their cells' mitochondria - that correlate to centenarians' enviable lifespan and healthspan. In Age Later, he translates those findings to news readers can use - including taking melatonin and using intermittent fasting - to mimic some of the effects of the 'super agers'' genetic code.
How would you like to have the mind, body, and spirit of someone half
your age, and add more years to your life? Or have people stare in

to become...ageless?
A ground breaking book on the history of Telomeres offering fresh advice on how to slow down aging and lengthen life. Nobel prize winning Doctor Elizabeth Blackburn and leading health psychologist Dr Elissa Epel have discovered biological markers called Telomeres which can help to understand how healthy our cells are and what we can do to improve them. The book specifically looks ideas including; how biological age is not chronological age; a biological basis for the mind-body connection, how sleep and diet can affect telomeres and shockingly how mothers who are highly stressed during pregnancy have children with shorter telomeres. It also offers tools and advice on how to determine cellular age and telomere health. Doctor Elizabeth Blackburn was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2009 for her discovery of telomeres and their role in the ageing process and has previously been named in TIME magazine's 100 Most Influential People. Dr. Elissa Epel is a leading health psychologist who has conducted pioneering research uncovering the psychobiological mechanisms related to how stress ages us and compromises our health-from emotional eating to unhealthy storage of abdominal fat to telomere shortening.
It is scientifically proven that what you eat, how you exercise, and your lifestyle in general can affect the aging process.
Frank Lipman, MD, is a leader in wellness and integrative and functional medicine, and The New Rules of Aging Well contains everything he teaches his patients - and then some - about reversing the so-called "symptoms of aging." Symptoms like feeling lousy and looking puffy are absolutely not a given of aging. They're warning signs that you need to change your lifestyle. It's your lifestyle choices, not your genes, that have a tremendous impact on how you age, and here you'll learn how to make the best choices in order to look younger and feel better all around. Through clearly titled and easy-to-digest entries covering the new rules to know, you'll learn that "The Most Effective Antiaging Mechanism Is Eating Less" and that "Night Eating Makes You Fat"; whether "16-Hour Fasting" is worth all the hype; that "Sugar Is the Worst Food You Can Put in Your Body;" to "Sleep More and Sleep Better" and to "Eat Mushrooms for Longevity"; about "Common Meds That Shouldn't Be Common"; that "Bone Broth Heals Holes in the Gut"; and the mantra "Do No Harm." And what happens when you follow the rules? An increased health span, where you'll look great and feel energetic, happy, sexy, agile, and strong.

All around us, older women flourish in industry, entertainment, and politics. Do they know something that we don't, or are we all just trying to figure it out? For so many of us, our hearts and minds still feel that we are twenty-something young women who can take on the world. But in our bodies, the flexibility and strength that were once taken for granted are far from how we remember them. Every day we have to rise above the creaky joints and achy knees to earn the opportunity of moving through the world with a modicum of grace. Yet we do rise, because it's a privilege to grow old, and every single day is a gift. Peter Pan's mantra was "never grow up"; our collective mantra should be "never stop growing." This collection of user-friendly stories, essays, and philosophies invites readers to celebrate whatever age they are with a sense of joy and purpose and with a spirit of gratitude.
The ultimate user's guide to the brain...highly intelligent,
straightforward, and important.
While there are endless books on being young, there are precious few on how to embrace the ageing process. We don't think we're old until suddenly we can't do something that until now has never been a problem. We don't feel we're old because our habits and reactions were formed when we were younger, and as they served us well we see no reason to change them. But growing older inevitably brings new challenges and A Genial Senior's Companion to Ageing is here to help anyone face the later years of their life with a refreshing, reassuring and humorous approach. A is for age, ailments and ambition; L for lists, loneliness and luck; T is for technology and tolerance: A Genial Senior's Companion to Ageing is the perfect gift for anyone approaching the later years of their life.

Edna and Leo, a perpetually warring, tyrannical pair in their 80s, begin wintering In Mexico, where they abandon their usual prudence to embrace adventure and a bevy of sketchy new friends. Soon, Edna adopts a pair of shyster builders whom she trusts over her own architect-daughter Elizabeth, and a farcical house results. Blithely indifferent to the calamities that result, the pair refuse all help from their too-compliant only child. Later, following her mother's sudden death, Elizabeth's wise, principled father attempts to fill his late wife's shoes with a string of loopy, live-in housekeepers-with privileges, he hopes. Before it is over the Mexican escapade will bring down the kind of disasters commonly found in pulp fiction. Why can't Elizabeth stop any of this from happening? No matter the madness, she cannot confront her parents any more than she ever could. In the end, the surprising way in which they come undone reveals just what they spent their lives trying to hide, thereby setting her free. Though unique in its loony details, Don't Say A Word! will resonate with beleaguered adult-children everywhere who will recognize the special misery of watching, helpless, as stubborn, diminished parents careen precariously toward the end of life. |
