Work-related stress is costly not only to employees, but also to organizations and society. For example, it is estimated that work-related stress, depression, and anxiety costs British employers GBP1,035 per employee and that workplace stress costs the US economy up to $300 billion annually. However, elevated levels of stress often cannot be changed, and, if demands were not placed on employees, employee learning, organizational innovation, and societal economic growth would be hindered. Consequently, it is vital that occupational health practitioners, employees, employers and researchers strive to better understand and manage workplace stress, such that employee health and well-being can be improved. This book can assist organizations and individuals as they encounter workplace stress. This edition highlights research done by 25 authors across 12 chapters that challenges how work stress is viewed and assessed. Additionally, a number of social and psychological influences on the stress experience are examined. Our beliefs and expectations of stress and its results, whether helpful or hurtful, can have a profound influence on our stress experiences. Also, the way that we approach our work (e.g., job crafting) or the treatment we receive from others (e.g., with dignity) can either mitigate or exacerbate any harmful or beneficial effects of stress. Moreover, how we assess the psychological (e.g., burnout and well-being) or physiological (e.g., cortisol) outcomes of stress are meaningful, and the proper diagnosis of stress (e.g., stress surveys) underlies our understanding. We hope that the findings reported in these chapters and the insights of these scholars will provide ways for you and/or your organization to improve the health and well-being of employees.
Stress is an unavoidable part of life that we will all encounter at various times, be it due to a one-off event such as losing a job or the break-up of a relationship, or from facing long-term difficulties such as working in a stressful environment or caring for someone who is ill. How well we deal with stress will influence the extent to which it affects our lives. Maureen Cooper explains why humans are designed to respond to stress in a certain way and why this can even be helpful at times. She goes on to show how to transform our habitual way of responding to stress by training ourselves in compassion and thereby improving our sense of control and wellbeing. In this workbook, you can learn to manage stress better: * Using tried and tested compassion techniques * Via case studies and practical exercises
Get back to basics and transform your life with this simple four-week, step-by-step breathing retraining program. In her years of teaching breathing retraining, Mary Birch has found that the majority of her clients experiencing symptoms of panic, anxiety and stress are overbreathing, sometimes significantly. Generally, they are not aware that they are overbreathing, or that this is linked to symptoms. Reducing breathing to the normal level has an enormous impact on reducing stress, anxiety, and panic and restoring a sense of calm. Most people will begin to feel an improvement in their symptoms within a week of implementing the strategies contained in this book, sometimes even within a few days. But Mary recommends a minimum four-week breathing retraining program for a reason: the body has to adjust to the new and improved breathing pattern, and this needs to become automatic, so that you do not revert to a disordered breathing pattern and chronic overbreathing in times of stress. Part 1 of this book provides an explanation of the link between overbreathing and stress, anxiety and panic symptoms. Part 2 contains a four-week program with weekly guidelines to help people experiencing these issues to improve their breathing pattern and gain long-term relief. If you struggle with symptoms of panic, stress or anxiety, this book could help change your life in a matter of weeks.
Biofeedback is the process of training your body to control its involuntary actions, such as breathing and heart rate. Minor changes to these actions can significantly improve physical and emotional well-being. In Biofeedback and Mindfulness in Everyday Life, Harvard Medical School faculty member Inna Khazan pairs biofeedback techniques with mindfulness practice to address some of life's most common ailments-from anxiety and fear to stress and insomnia. She begins with a description of basic physiological information, explaining concepts such as breathing and overbreathing. In Part Two she dives into the practice of mindfulness. And in Part Three she zeroes in on applying this mind-body approach to an array of common problems. Khazan's approach outlines simple solutions for readers who want to improve the way they respond to challenges. She guides them through increasing their resilience and emotional flexibility while empowering them to take back control of their overall health.
Carers are particularly vulnerable to feeling stressed, worried and worn down by the vast demands that often come with caregiving, be they physical, psychological or emotional. Mindfulness can be enormously beneficial to carers, whether professional or voluntary, as a means of developing greater inner stability, resilience and gaining more control over their thoughts, feelings and emotions. Mindfulness is an evidence-based approach that is proven to help protect against stress, anxiety, depression and burnout. Dr Cheryl Rezek provides an accessible introduction to mindfulness, and explains how simple mindfulness practices and psychological concepts can be used to manage the day-to-day demands of caring effectively, helping caregivers to gain a greater sense of control and maintain a more positive and balanced outlook. The book includes easy-to-use and enjoyable mindfulness exercises, short enough to fit into a busy day, as well as accompanying audio tracks to support and guide the reader through these exercises. An essential read for all those involved in caring for people with acute or long-term health and mental health conditions, disabilities and other support needs, including relatives and other informal carers, adoptive parents and foster carers, as well as professional medical, health and social care staff.

This groundbreaking book explains why women experience burnout differently than men - and provides a simple, science-based plan to help women minimize stress, manage emotions and live a more joyful life. The gap between what it's really like to be a woman and what people expect women to be is a primary cause of burnout, because we exhaust ourselves trying to close the space between the two. How can you 'love your body' when everything around you tells you you're inadequate? How do you 'lean in' at work when you're already giving 110% and aren't recognized for it? How can you live happily and healthily in a world that is constantly telling you you're too fat, too needy, too noisy and too selfish? Sisters Emily Nagoski, Ph.D., the bestselling author of Come as You Are, and Amelia Nagoski, DMA, are here to help end the cycle of overwhelm and exhaustion, and confront the obstacles that stand between women and well-being. With insights from the latest science, prescriptive advice, and helpful worksheets and exercises, Burnout reveals: * what you can do to complete the biological stress cycle - and return your body to a state of relaxation. * how to manage the 'monitor' in your brain that regulates the emotion of frustration. * how the Bikini Industrial Complex makes it difficult for women to love their bodies - and how to fight back. * why rest, human connection, and befriending your inner critic are key to recovering from and preventing burnout. Eye-opening, compassionate and optimistic, Burnout will completely transform the way we think about and manage stress, empowering women to thrive under pressure and enjoy meaningful yet balanced lives. All women will find something transformative in these pages - and be empowered to create positive and lasting change.

In plain language he describes the major types of stress and explains a range of effective treatments. Do you remember the last time you worried needlessly? The next time you start ruminating, pick up a pencil and follow these steps: (1) Jot down what's on your mind. (2) List a few things that you can do to address your worries. If the situation is truly out of your control, it can be a relief just to acknowledge it. (3) Later, look back your worries and evaluate them in hindsight. Each page has two tear-off tabs so that you can "tag" the subject as "Worth My Worry" or "NOT Worth My Worry." You'll be shocked to see how often things aren't as worry-worthy as they seem. No Worries is also filled with inspiring quotes and ideas about conquering worries, all set in a bold and empowering design. The package is uplifting, giftable, and holds the promise of lightening your load. Worrying comes naturally to journaling as a topic, but this journal offers a way to redirect your thinking and move on to a more positive place. |
