Autobiography of a Democratic Nation at Risk - The Currere of Culture and Citizenship in the Post-9/11 American Wilderness... Autobiography of a Democratic Nation at Risk - The Currere of Culture and Citizenship in the Post-9/11 American Wilderness (Paperback, New edition)
Jovictoria Nicholson-Goodman
R860 R765 Discovery Miles 7 650 Save R95 (11%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Expanding William F. Pinar's notion of autobiography from an individual to a national scale, this book takes the reader on an inner journey to explore the fragmented condition of the post-9/11 American national psyche. It excavates the many layers of the emerging social context within which multiple, conflicting national narratives of identity compete, and uses notions of democracy, nation, and citizen as signposts of contested terrain inside a troubled nation. While reminding us that the old, enduring questions remain unresolved, the book identifies and grapples with new questions that are central to emergent visions of 'educating for democracy' in contemporary America, situated now within a frenetic post-9/11 world.

Global to Local Curriculum Policy Processes - The Enactment of the International Baccalaureate in Remote International Schools... Global to Local Curriculum Policy Processes - The Enactment of the International Baccalaureate in Remote International Schools (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Susan Ledger, Lesley Vidovich, Tom O'Donoghue
R3,324 Discovery Miles 33 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the dynamics of curriculum policy processes involved in the adoption, production and enactment of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IBPYP), accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). It addresses deficits in current literature and provides insight into and the complexities involved within a framework that takes cognisance of the relationships between global, regional, national and local levels of education policy processes. In doing so, it contributes to the current body of research on international education, remote education and policy processes. The IBPYP is one of the three programmes that go to make up the increasingly popular suite of programmes offered by the IBO. Given the exponential growth of international schools caused by an ever changing globalized world and a mobile workforce, international curriculum policy is becoming more complex. This has lead to a recognition of the need for a range of policy analysis studies in the field. The study presented in this book was conceptualised in the light of such recognition. This relatively uncharted field has been explored by focusing on one of the most 'unusual' settings. Accordingly, the adoption, production and enactment of the IBPYO at three remote international schools has been examined. The study also addresses how the phenomena of 'international schools' and 'remote schools' complement or compete with, each other. This results in a better understanding of the educational policies informing both 'international schools' and 'remote schools' and the interconnectivity that might exist between them.

International Research Handbook on Values Education and Student Wellbeing (Hardcover, 1st Edition.
2nd Printing. 2010): Terence... International Research Handbook on Values Education and Student Wellbeing (Hardcover, 1st Edition. 2nd Printing. 2010)
Terence Lovat, Ron Toomey, Neville Clement
R7,855 Discovery Miles 78 550 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Informed by the most up-to-date research from around the world, as well as examples of good practice, this handbook analyzes values education in the context of a range of school-based measures associated with student wellbeing. These include social, emotional, moral and spiritual growth - elements that seem to be present where intellectual advancement and academic achievement are being maximized. This text comes as 'values education' widens in scope from being concerned with morality, ethics, civics and citizenship to a broader definition synonymous with a holistic approach to education in general. This expanded purview is frequently described as pedagogy relating to 'values' and 'wellbeing'.

This contemporary understanding of values education, or values and wellbeing pedagogy, fits well with recent neuroscience research. This has shown that notions of cognition, or intellect, are far more intertwined with social and emotional growth than earlier educational paradigms have allowed for. In other words, the best laid plans about the technical aspects of pedagogy are bound to fail unless the growth of the whole person - social, emotional, moral, spiritual and intellectual, is the pedagogical target. Teachers and educationalists will find that this handbook provides evidence, culled from both research and practice, of the beneficial effects of such a 'values and wellbeing' pedagogy.

Social Justice, The Common Core, and Closing the Instructional Gap - Empowering Diverse Learners and Their Teachers... Social Justice, The Common Core, and Closing the Instructional Gap - Empowering Diverse Learners and Their Teachers (Hardcover)
Janet C. Richards, Kristien Zenkov
R2,823 Discovery Miles 28 230 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

There is little doubt that the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a controversial entity. They are provocative for the way in which they have been developed, for the ways they are being implemented and evaluated, for their content, and for their failure to explicitly consider the needs, interests, and histories of diverse populations. While the CCSS continue to be problematized by critics around the country-including the editors of this volume-it is evident our nation is moving toward (some would argue we have arrived at) a national set of standards and/or a national curriculum. This text will be an important volume for multiple audiences, in large part because it will bring together critical perspectives on the CCSS and the notion of national standards/curricula. It will simultaneously provide a social justice orientation as a way to interpret the CCSS and respond to their limits, while presenting practical examples of social justice?oriented, CCSS?focused curricula that empower diverse learners and their teachers. Social Justice, the Common Core, and Closing the Instructional Gap will consist of chapters by classroom teachers and university scholars who portray honest, engaging, first?person accounts of their successes and challenges connecting a social justice pedagogical orientation to the Common Core State Standards. These authors candidly and passionately share the challenges of navigating between a social justice curriculum and high stakes standards? and test?driven environments. They highlight their accomplishments that include effectively supporting students to consider social injustices and devise plans to work toward a more equitable world.

Curriculum Models for the 21st Century - Using Learning Technologies in Higher Education (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Maree Gosper,... Curriculum Models for the 21st Century - Using Learning Technologies in Higher Education (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Maree Gosper, Dirk Ifenthaler
R4,877 Discovery Miles 48 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Changing student profiles and the increasing availability of mainstream and specialized learning technologies are stretching the traditional face-to-face models of teaching and learning in higher education. Institutions, too, are facing far-reaching systemic changes which are placing strains on existing resources and physical infrastructure and calling into question traditional ways of teaching through lectures and tutorials. And, with an ever-increasing scrutiny on teaching and teachers' accountability for positive educational outcomes, the call for closer attention to learning, teaching and, most especially, to the design and delivery of the curriculum is given increasing relevance and importance.

Research provides strong evidence of the potential for technologies to facilitate not only cognition and learning but also to become integral components in the redesign of current curriculum models. Some Universities and individual academics have moved along this pathway, developing new and innovative curriculum, blending pedagogies and technologies to suit their circumstances. Yet, there are others, unsure of the possibilities, the opportunities and constraints in these changing times."Curriculum Models for the 21st Century" gives insights into how teaching and learning can be done differently. The focus is on a whole of curriculum approach, looking at theoretical models and examples of practice which capitalize on the potential of technologies to deliver variations and alternatives to the more traditional lecture-based model of University teaching. This book challenges educators to be agents of change, to take history into their own hands, and to make social justice central to the educational endeavor. As a scholar immersed in a language of possibility, Paraskeva unabashedly embraces a pedagogy of hope championed by Paulo Freire where men and women of the world become conscious of their capacity as agents of history who can intervene in the world so as to make it less discriminatory and more humane.

Learning to Mentor-as-Praxis - Foundations for a Curriculum in Teacher Education (Hardcover, 2010 ed.): Lily Orland-Barak Learning to Mentor-as-Praxis - Foundations for a Curriculum in Teacher Education (Hardcover, 2010 ed.)
Lily Orland-Barak
R2,786 Discovery Miles 27 860 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Lily Orland-Barak offers us a breathtaking work of science ?ction. Or perhaps I should say 'science and ?ction. ' The science side of the equation employs sophisticated technique for observing and describing interpersonal and intrapersonal dynamics among professionals in education. Both dramatic and seemingly ordinary episodes in the lives of teachers in relational tension with one another are analyzed with scienti?c care, precision, and insight. The scienti?c study of mentoring is like the scienti?c study of soap bubbles - their formation, growth, and sudden exit from the visible world with a nearly soundless 'pop ' Scienti?c and intellectual tools can be used to describe and predict the behavior of soap bubbles, to study their colors, shapes, surface tension, and tiny mass. The same is true of the study of mentoring. But in both cases, the greatest care must be taken to avoid popping the almost m- ically elegant form - to avoid destroying the delicate relationship by rushing in, by heavy attempts at control, or by premature dissection, or even by paying attention too intensely to a private, personal relationship. Mentoring is best studied by being still, by listening with authentic interest, and by using our peripheral vision. The science and the scientist have done their best work here. The ?ction side of this ?ne book gives life to telling examples of mentoring in action.

Task- and Standard-based Learning - An Instructional Psychology Perspective (Paperback): Hermann Astleitner, Hans-Joerg Herber Task- and Standard-based Learning - An Instructional Psychology Perspective (Paperback)
Hermann Astleitner, Hans-Joerg Herber
R1,023 Discovery Miles 10 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Tasks and standards play a major role within recent attempts to improve quality in education, like, for example, PISA (Program for International Student Assessment). Within this book, first, the relationship between instructional psychology, educational standards, and task-related learning research is outlined. Then a theoretical model of task attributes, which are relevant for learning, is depicted. Based on certain task attributes (e.g., task complexity and sequencing), two experimental studies are conducted in order to test task effects on learning and motivation. Results showed that effects of tasks varied in respect to task contexts and personality characteristics of the learner. Within an exploration study, using LISREL, a theory of emotional processes was tested in order to find emotional standards for reading. Within a section of application, it is shown how task-related research could be used to design self-regulated learning materials and activities, which support teaching. Finally, standards for educational practices (web-based teacher education) are formulated and discussed.

Perspectives on Scientific Argumentation - Theory, Practice and Research (Hardcover, 2012 ed.): Myint Swe Khine Perspectives on Scientific Argumentation - Theory, Practice and Research (Hardcover, 2012 ed.)
Myint Swe Khine
R2,683 Discovery Miles 26 830 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Argumentation-arriving at conclusions on a topic through a process of logical reasoning that includes debate and persuasion- has in recent years emerged as a central topic of discussion among science educators and researchers. There is now a firm and general belief that fostering argumentation in learning activities can develop students' critical thinking and reasoning skills, and that dialogic and collaborative inquiries are key precursors to an engagement in scientific argumentation. It is also reckoned that argumentation helps students assimilate knowledge and generate complex meaning. The consensus among educators is that involving students in scientific argumentation must play a critical role in the education process itself. Recent analysis of research trends in science education indicates that argumentation is now the most prevalent research topic in the literature. This book attempts to consolidate contemporary thinking and research on the role of scientific argumentation in education.

"Perspectives on Scientific Argumentation" brings together prominent scholars in the field to share the sum of their knowledge about the place of scientific argumentation in teaching and learning. Chapters explore scientific argumentation as a means of addressing and solving problems in conceptual change, reasoning, knowledge-building and the promotion of scientific literacy. Others interrogate topics such as the importance of language, discursive practice, social interactions and culture in the classroom. The material in this book, which features intervention studies, discourse analyses, classroom-based experiments, anthropological observations, and design-based research, will inform theoretical frameworks and changing pedagogical practices as well as encourage new avenues of research."

Holistic Approaches to Language Learning (Paperback, illustrated edition): Christine Penman Holistic Approaches to Language Learning (Paperback, illustrated edition)
Christine Penman
R1,341 Discovery Miles 13 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume brings together the views of academics and researchers from a range of European educational traditions to reflect on the contribution of holism to language learning, drawing on research and practice in various areas of second language acquisition. The volume is divided into four sections which move broadly from theoretical to particular methodological and practical considerations. The individual chapters address and evaluate the following questions: What are the theoretical bases of holistic learning and how can it encompass language teaching? Do approaches to language learning exist which succeed in engaging with language learners as individual, dynamic, complex 'whole' human beings? What reflections are relevant from the different points of view of teacher and learner? What are the pedagogical implications? Can holistic approaches be adopted within schools and universities? How can technology enhance holistic language learning? How can the scope and limits of this concept be delineated?

School Turnaround Policies and Practices in the US - Learning from Failed School Reform (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Joseph F.... School Turnaround Policies and Practices in the US - Learning from Failed School Reform (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Joseph F. Murphy, Joshua F. Bleiberg
R3,661 Discovery Miles 36 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume provides an analysis of what we know about turning around "failing" schools in the United States. It starts with an in-depth examination of the barriers that hinder action on turnaround work. The book analyses the reasons why some schools that find themselves in serious academic trouble fail in their efforts to turn themselves around. Beginning with a discussion of what may best be described as "lethal" reasons or the most powerful explanation for failed reform initiatives, which include an absence of attention to student care and support; a near absence of attention to curriculum and instruction; the firing of the wrong people. Covered in this volume are "critical" explanations for failed turnaround efforts such as failure to attend to issues of sustainability, and "significant" explanations for failed turnaround efforts such as the misuse of test data. The volume concludes by examining what can be done to overcome problems that cause failure for turnaround schools and reviewing ideas in the core technology of schooling: curriculum, instruction, and assessment. As well as exploring problems associated with the leadership and management of schools to see where improvement is possible and an analysis of opportunities found in relationships between schools and their external partners such as parents and community members.

Values Education and Lifelong Learning - Principles, Policies, Programmes (Hardcover, 2007 ed.): David N. Aspin, Judith D.... Values Education and Lifelong Learning - Principles, Policies, Programmes (Hardcover, 2007 ed.)
David N. Aspin, Judith D. Chapman
R4,259 Discovery Miles 42 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The aim of this book is to provide an easily accessible, practical yet scholarly source of information about the international concern for the nature, theory and practices of the ideas of values education and lifelong learning. Each chapter in this book is written in an accessible style by an international expert in the field. Authors tackle the task of identifying, analysing and addressing the key problems, topics and issues relevant to questions about the nature, purpose and scope of values education and Lifelong Learning that are internationally generalisable and, in times of rapid change, of enduring interest to the scholar and practitioner. Authors explore the ways and means by which learners may be encouraged to become educated and grow, both as individual beings and social agents, throughout the whole of their lifespan. The book seeks to provide accounts and critical appraisal of some of the different principles, philosophies, theories, beliefs, traditions and cultures that might form the basis of, frame and furnish the setting for values education policies and programs. We look at some of the main theories behind versions of value in lifelong learning and we point to some of the key concepts and categories at work in such theories. We provide reference to and accounts of some examples of policies or proposals in various national contexts and a range of examples of good practice in policies, programs and curriculum schemes from different schools, school systems and other educating agencies, institutions and organisations around the world.
