Despite being regarded as the most common toxicological target in the endocrine system, the adrenal gland has often been neglected in regulatory testing. Adrenal Toxicology addresses the increased interest in adrenocortical toxicology and the need for a resource that makes techniques available to examine adrenal endocrine disruption. Examining current techniques and the latest advancements, Adrenal Toxicology reviews the endocrinology, pharmacology, pathology and toxicology of the adrenal gland. This text provides information on the range of drugs and chemicals that affect adrenocortical function and suggests standardized approaches for in vivo and in vitro assessment. This volume also presents recent developments in the molecular mechanisms of toxicity to the adrenal cortex and medulla, and considers environmental adrenal endocrine disruption in sentinel species. Adrenal Toxicology: reflects the major developments made over the past decade focuses on the latest research techniques, including their uses and limitations provides an integrated strategy for adrenal toxicology evaluation identifies knowledge and data gaps, providing impetus for regulatory consideration

Estrogens are key modulators of brain regions that mediate learning and memory formation. This regulation has significant translational implications, as estrogens contribute to age-related memory decline and dementia, emotional disorders, addiction, and recovery from brain injury. Although the importance of estrogens for memory formation has been well accepted within the behavioral neuroendocrinology community, it has yet to be fully appreciated by neuroscientists outside of the discipline. Recent National Institutes of Health policies on the inclusion of sex as a biological variable in grant applications will force thousands of researchers to consider hormonal regulation of memory for the first time. However, the majority of these researchers are not trained endocrinologists, and no previous monograph comprehensively encompasses the breadth of basic and clinical research on this subject. Thus, this book provides a vital resource for non-endocrinologists and endocrinologists alike. Estrogens and Memory: Basic Research and Clinical Implications provides a compendium of cutting-edge basic and clinical research describing the ways in which estrogens regulate memory in a variety of species. Chapters are written by leading experts whose work is on the forefront of this exciting field. Three fundamental discussions focus on: effects of estrogens on the hippocampus and other brain regions central to memory, effects of estrogens on memory and related cognitive processes throughout the lifespan, and translational implications of estrogenic regulation of memory for aging and disease.
As the incidence of diabetes increases worldwide, the need for recommendations on how to prevent and treat the condition grows exponentially, and so does the need for an authoritative source for information on the appropriate models to study the condition. The new edition of Animal Models of Diabetes is that source. The book presents updated and expanded information regarding the use of models in experiments with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The new edition compiles relevant time-saving information on well-recognized models, including various mice, rats, minipigs, and Rhesus monkeys, and provides extensive references for more in-depth study. It contains new and updated referenced reviews on animals with induced obesity as well as observations on retinopathy in spontaneous diabetes resembling human lesions. The book discusses nutritionally diabetes-prone animals and considerations of insulin resistance and obesity. The contributors also address the importance of recent findings on the pathogenesis of diabetes and its complications in relation to human disease. Including contributions from prominent experts in the field, the book brings together scattered data and lucidly presents it. This promotes the understanding of the etiopathology of diabetes and offers a new grasp of the insulin action, its negative feedback leading to insulin resistance, and its detrimental outcomes. The book also includes new knowledge on specific complications of diabetes, offering an incentive to test advanced modalities to prevent and inhibit their occurrence.
By 2030, diabetes will be the 7th leading cause of premature mortality worldwide, according to the World Health Organisation. The application of nanotechnology in medicine holds many possible advantages and over the past few decades, there has been huge progress in its utilisation. Nanotechnology is widely applied for cancer treatment and other diseases but, the use of it for diabetes treatment is now starting to flourish. This book presents the latest developments of nanomedicine for the treatment of different facets of diabetes and related disorders. With a multidisciplinary approach, chapters focus on previously overlooked topics in glucose sensing, insulin delivery and secretion, bioimaging and transplantation of islets. This book is suitable for researchers of nanomedicine, nanotechnology and diabetes looking into the emergence of new approaches for the treatment of this life-threatening disease.

Epidemiology of Diabetes addresses the patterns, risk factors and prevention tactics for the epidemic of diabetes in the US population. Diabetes is a costly and common disease that needs serious attention and awareness. Diabetes causes devastating consequences, such as neuropathy, retinopathy, nephropathy and vasculopathy. This succinct reference focuses on current data and research on diabetes, and is essential reading for diabetes care providers, as well as health care decision-makers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that more than 100 million US adults are living with diabetes or prediabetes, hence this is a timely resource on the topic.
Although cardiovascular disease remains the leading proximate cause of death in the United States, it is now estimated that obesity may be equivalent to smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in America. In light of these statistics, this reference presents our current understanding of the epidemiology, pathology, and genetics of the obesity epidemic and its relationship to cardiovascular disease. It provides an evidence-based approach to the topic, as well as emphasizes a combined treatment strategy for patients suffering from both obesity and cardiovascular disease.
A critical review by prominent experts of both the cutting-edge of stem cell biology and the application of stem cells to endocrine diseases, including diabetes, infertility, and liver-associated metabolic disorders. The authors discuss current research to modify stem cells, develop an endocrine-like cell, and use adult bone marrow stem cells to treat autoimmune diseases, including endocrine-based autoimmune diseases. The heartwarming true story of how one man's life was saved by adopting an overweight, middle-aged shelter dog named Peety. Eric O'Grey was 150 pounds overweight, depressed, and sick. After a lifetime of failed diet attempts, the onset of serious diabetes due to his weight prompted Eric to see a new doctor, who surprisingly prescribed adopting a shelter dog. And that's when Eric met Peety: a middle-aged and forgotten shelter dog who, like Eric, had seen better days. The two adopted each other and began an incredible journey together. Over the next year, just by going on walks, playing together and eating plant-based food, Eric lost 150 pounds and Peety lost 25. The bond of unconditional love he and Peety formed forever changed their lives. As a result, Eric reversed his type 2 diabetes, got off all medication, became happy and healthy for the first time in his life, and even reconnected with and married his high school sweetheart. WALKING WITH PEETY is perfect for anyone who is ready to make a change in their life and for everyone who knows the joy, love and hope that dogs can bring to human lives. This is more than a tale of mutual rescue; this is an epic story of friendship and strength.
