Pui Ting Wong, Yuan Xu
R1,555 Discovery Miles 15 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book forges a link between residential CO2 emissions and time use, focussing on China as a key case study. To provide a better understanding of the energy implications of the lifestyle differences between urban and rural China, Pui Ting Wong and Yuan Xu utilise time-use methodology as an alternative way to explore the links between individual lifestyle and residential electricity consumption. They begin by examining how Chinese citizens divide their time between daily activities, highlighting patterns around indicators including age, gender, education, and economic status. They go on to quantify CO2 intensities of these time-use activities. Through this linkage, this book presents an alternative strategy for climate-friendly living, highlighting the ways in which urban planning can be deployed to help individuals adapt their time-use patterns for CO2 mitigation. Providing a novel contribution to the growing literature on residential electricity consumption, Residential Electricity Consumption in Urbanizing China will be of great interest to scholars of climate policy, energy studies, time use, and urban planning.

Paolo Bertoldi
R4,787 Discovery Miles 47 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book contains peer-reviewed papers presented at the 10th International Conference on Energy Efficiency in Domestic Appliances and Lighting (EEDAL'19), held in Jinan, China from 6-8 November 2019. Energy efficiency helps to mitigate CO2 emissions and at the same time increases the security of energy supply. Energy efficiency is recognized as the cleanest, quickest and cheapest energy source. Not only this, but energy efficiency brings several additional benefits for society and end-users, such as lower energy costs, reduced local pollution, better outdoor and indoor air quality, etc. However, in some sectors, such as the residential sector, barriers to investments in energy efficiency remain. Legislation adopted in several jurisdictions (EU, Japan, USA, China, India, Australia, Brazil, etc.) helps in removing barriers and fosters investments in energy efficiency. These initiatives complement innovative financing schemes for energy efficiency, the provision of energy services by energy service companies and different types of information programs. At the same time, progress in appliance technologies and in solid state lighting offer high levels of efficiency. LED lighting is an example. As with previous conferences in this series, EEDAL'19 provided a unique forum to discuss and debate the latest developments in energy and environmental impact of households, including appliances, lighting, heating and cooling equipment, electronics, smart meters, consumer behavior, and policies and programs. EEDAL addressed non-technical issues such as consumer behavior, energy access in developing countries, and demand response.

Emergy (Hardcover): Olivier Le Corre Emergy (Hardcover)
Olivier Le Corre
R1,853 Discovery Miles 18 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Emergy presents the fundamentals of emergy, proposing the definition and representation of emergy diagrams and 'spreading.' Embodied energy is the energy consumed by all of the processes associated with the production of a building, from the mining and processing of natural resources to manufacturing, transport and product delivery. The authors evaluate a range of sources and the methodologies surrounding emergy analysis. Filled with real-world applied examples including wood energy, wind resources, ore and recycling, this book shows you how to adopt an approach similar to the Lagrangian approach to fluid mechanics, and establish that the intuitive notion of temporal independence of the emergy specific to materials requires nuances.

Towards Nearly Zero Energy - Urban Settings in the Mediterranean Climate (Paperback): Annarita Ferrante Towards Nearly Zero Energy - Urban Settings in the Mediterranean Climate (Paperback)
Annarita Ferrante
R2,956 R2,752 Discovery Miles 27 520 Save R204 (7%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Towards Nearly Zero Energy: Urban Settings in the Mediterranean Climate discusses tactics that can be used to effectively reduce energy consumption towards zero energy. With energy usage in buildings accounting for over 40% of primary energy use and 24% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, this remains an unavoidable objective. The book looks at the life of the systems of energy production from renewable sources amidst the exceptionally challenging global economic crisis that the Mediterranean areas and other societies are currently experiencing. By using an innovative and interdisciplinary approach of socio-oriented technological design, the book indicates tools and measures that can be developed at the public, legislative, and market levels to counterbalance the large pay-back times of energy efficiency measures. In particular, the book displays guidelines and best practices to activate new forms of economic incentives in order to attract potential investors that demonstrate that a large set of possible solutions is technically feasible to achieve nearly zero energy, even in high energy consuming circumstances and urban settings. Furthermore, by discussing and comparing the economic and energy impact of different technology options, this work offers guidelines and best practices to activate new cost-effective forms and social incentives in order to attract both potential investors and motivate the urban stakeholders toward nearly zero energy.

Coil Tubing Unit for Oil Production and Remedial Measures (Hardcover): Mohammed Ismail Iqbal Coil Tubing Unit for Oil Production and Remedial Measures (Hardcover)
Mohammed Ismail Iqbal
R2,935 Discovery Miles 29 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

* Mechanical methods * Chemical methods * Combination methods Description / back cover text: Well activation is one of the most important aspects in the oil and gas industries and nitrogen gas is predominately used. The gas, being light, is sent down the producing reservoir which will enhance the production or improve the flow of crude oil. In addition to the methods used to increase production there are several problems like sand production and water production from the producing wells. Sand production occurs when the destabilizing stresses at the formation face exceed the strength of the natural arching tendencies and/or grain-to-grain cementation strength. Ideally, during oil production, the formation should be porous, permeable and well consolidated through which hydrocarbons can easily flow into the production wells. But sometimes, especially during production from unconsolidated sandstone reservoirs, the produced hydrocarbons may also carry large amounts of sand into the well bore and sand entering production wells is one of the oldest problems faced by oil companies and one of the toughest to solve. These unconsolidated formations may not restrain grain movement, and produce sand along with the fluids especially at high rates. Water production is also a problem that many reservoir or production engineers face in day-to-day life. As engineers we should be able to decide whether water control solutions should be applied or not. The excess production of water is caused by the depletion of the reservoir and simply sweeps away most of the oil that the reservoir can produce. This book gives an information how well activation using nitrogen is carried out, and how sand control and water control issues can be resolved.
