Examining Ethics in Contemporary Science Education Research - Being Responsive and Responsible (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020):... Examining Ethics in Contemporary Science Education Research - Being Responsive and Responsible (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Kathrin Otrel-Cass, Maria Andree, Minjung Ryu
R2,663 Discovery Miles 26 630 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book poses questions on how to work ethically in research on science education. Applying research ethics reflectively and responsibly is fundamental for conducting research with people. It seeks to renew the conversation on how and why to engage with ethics in science education research and to adjust and refine research practices. It highlights both the need for methodological reflections in science education research and the particular ethical research challenges of science education. Science education research involves the study of people - often young and vulnerable people - and their practices. Researchers working within humanities and social science research commonly follow guidelines and codes of conducts set by country-specific ethics committees. Such guidelines function as minimal requirement for ethical reflection. This book seeks to engage the community of science education researchers in a conversation on ethics in science education moving beyond the mere compliance with governmental regulations toward a collective reflection. It asks the question of whether the existing guidelines provided for researchers are keeping up with contemporary realities of the visual presence of individuals in digital spaces. It also asks questions on how participatory research methodologies alters the relations between researchers and practitioners. This book is organized into two parts: Part one is entitled Challenging existing norms and practices. It asks questions such as: What are the conditions of knowledge that shape ethical decision making? Where is this kind of knowledge coming from? How is this knowledge structured, and where are the limitations? How can we justify our beliefs concerning our ethical research actions? Part two Epistemological considerations for ethical science education research centres norms and practices of conducting science education research in regard to methods, validity and scope.

Why Do Boys Have Nipples? - And 73 other weird questions that only science can answer (Paperback): New Scientist Why Do Boys Have Nipples? - And 73 other weird questions that only science can answer (Paperback)
New Scientist 1
R366 Discovery Miles 3 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Why aren't there any green mammals? Is eating bogeys bad for you? Do dolphins and whales get thirsty? Why can't you tickle yourself? Where do astronauts put their dirty underwear? Children make excellent scientists - they're inquisitive, keen to learn and have open minds. And they especially love to learn about all the gross stuff and all the weird facts - this book is packed full of them. In Why Do Boys Have Nipples?, kids will discover how to extract iron from breakfast cereal; that fish communicate by farting; how to turn fried eggs green; why tigers have stripes, not spots; and much, much more. Behind each surprising question and answer or wacky experiment is a scientific explanation that will teach kids more about biology, chemistry and physics, and the world around them.

Iris Duhn, Karen Malone, Marek Tesar
R4,483 Discovery Miles 44 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book challenges the notion that nature is a city's opposite and addresses the often-overlooked concept of urban nature and how it relates to children's experiences of environmental education. The idea of nature-deficit, as well as concerns that children in cities lack for experiences of nature, speaks to the anxieties that underpin urban living and a lack of natural experiences. The contributors to this volume provide insights into a more complex understanding of urban nature and of children's experiences of urban nature. What is learned if nature is not somewhere else but right here, wherever we are? What does it mean for children's environmental learning if nature is a relationship and not an entity? How can such a relational understanding of urban nature and childhood support more sustainable and more inclusive urban living? In raising challenging questions about childhoods and urban nature, this book will stimulate much needed discussion to provoke new imaginings for researchers in environmental education, childhood studies, and urban studies. This book was originally published as a special issue of Environmental Education Research.

Oysters are humble animals yet very important. Vital to the health of our coast, this keystone species helps filter coastal waters and protects shorelines from undue erosion. In addition, oysters are a source for both food and physical shelter for a wide array of other animals as well as some plants. This book began with a federal grant to create a living shoreline, a manmade slope carefully engineered to provide optimal living conditions for oysters and that will function as a seamless part of the natural environment. Such living shorelines allow oysters to thrive while they also help protect the land from some of the problems that are increasing because of climate change. Why add a children's book to an ecological building project? Learning about oysters and their role in the environment will help our young people grow into adults who are good stewards of our planet. Understanding life cycles and the interconnections between species, no matter how small, are crucial to that outcome, and oysters are a fascinating and compelling way to explore those concepts. Includes: Full-page color illustrations throughout. Inset illustrations highlighting associated species, life-cycle stages, ecological insights, and human uses of oysters. Amazing oyster facts. Ways to help support oysters. Further reading.

Alan S Perelson
R4,524 Discovery Miles 45 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Assuming that the complex phenomena underlying the operation of the immune system may be better understood through the collaborative efforts of theorists and experimentalists viewing the same phenomena in different ways, the Sante Fe Institute and the Theoretical Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory cosponsored a workshop entitled "Theoretical Immunology". The workshop focused on themes spanning the field of immunology, with emphasis on areas where the theorists have made the most progress. This book covers the discussions a that workshop on the topics of immune surveillance, mathematical models of HIV infection, complexities of antigen-antibody systems, immune suppression and tolerance, and idiotypie networks. In each of these areas there is reason to believe that advances can be made either through interactions among experimentalists and theorists or through the critical look experimentalists and theorists will bring to bear upon one another's work.

Extinction Planet (Paperback): Anna Claybourne Extinction Planet (Paperback)

R287 Discovery Miles 2 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Extinction Planet offers young readers a clear, insightful look at Earth's wildlife extinction crisis It is estimated that out of around eight million species on Earth, at least one million plant and animal species are threatened with extinction, and that the current rate of extinction is up to 100 times higher than in any previous mass extinction. And it's human activity that's largely responsible for this frightening decline. Extinction Planet takes a non-alarmist, but truthful, look at Earth's extinction crisis, explaining what a mass extinction is, how they occur and what their repercussions can be. It explores how, as humankind has caused this latest biodiversity crisis, we also have the solutions to slow or stop its damage, from reining in overconsumption, rewilding natural places, making farming more planet-friendly, preventing overfishing and seriously tackling climate change. It also suggests ways we can all live in a more planet-friendly way, from global changes such as investing in renewable energy sources, to individual actions such as buying sustainable products and eating less meat and fish. Following on from Plastic Planet, Hot Planet, Recycled Planet and Sustainable Planet, Extinction Planet features the same blend of illustrations and photos and a striking cover, and is written by the award-winning author Anna Claybourne. Aimed at readers aged 9 and up.

Boy Who Invented the Popsicle: The Cool Science Behind Frank Epperson's Famous Frozen Treat (Hardcover): Anne Renaud Boy Who Invented the Popsicle: The Cool Science Behind Frank Epperson's Famous Frozen Treat (Hardcover)
Anne Renaud; Illustrated by Milan Pavlovic
R426 Discovery Miles 4 260 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Frank William Epperson is a curious boy who wants to be an inventor when he grows up. Since inventing begins with experimenting, Frank spends a lot of time in his ?laboratory? (i.e. his back porch) trying out his ideas, such as building a double-handled handcar that whizzes past the single-handled cars in his neighborhood. What Frank loves most, though, is experimenting with liquids. When he invents his own yummy flavored soda water drink, his friends love it! And this gets him to thinking: ?I wonder what this drink would taste like frozen Though he doesn't yet realize it, his curiosity will lead to his best invention ever: the Popsicle! In this innovative picture book, Anne Renaud tells a lively story inspired by a real person and true events. Budding scientists will be inspired to emulate the way Frank follows his curiosity, works hard and never gives up --- a growth mindset in action. Interwoven within the story are full-page illustrated instructions for four science experiments that Frank performs, so readers can try them at home or school. Thoroughly researched back matter provides additional historical notes, photos and a bibliography. This readable book covers social studies topics including early twentieth-century history and inventions and inventors, as well as science topics, such as simple chemistry experiments and an overview of the skills and strategies of scientific inquiry.
