Keith S. Taber, Manabu Sumida, Lynne McClure
R4,488 Discovery Miles 44 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers an overview of programmes designed to support the learning of gifted and talented students in STEM subjects, both to allow them to meet their potential and to encourage them to proceed towards careers in STEM areas. The chapters from a range of national contexts report on perspectives, approaches and projects in gifted education in STEM subjects. These contributions provide a picture of the state of research and practice in this area, both to inform further research and development, and to support classroom teachers in their day-to-day work. Chapters have been written with practitioners in mind, but include relevant scholarly citations to the literature. The book includes some contributions illustrating research and practice in specific STEM areas, and others which bridge across different STEM subjects. The volume also includes an introductory theoretical chapter exploring the implications for gifted learners of how 'STEM' is understood and organized within the school curriculums.

Miseducation - How Climate Change Is Taught in America (Paperback): Katie Worth Miseducation - How Climate Change Is Taught in America (Paperback)
Katie Worth
R359 R334 Discovery Miles 3 340 Save R25 (7%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Why are so many American children learning so much misinformation about climate change? Investigative reporter Katie Worth reviewed scores of textbooks, built a 50-state database, and traveled to a dozen communities to talk to children and teachers about what is being taught, and found a red-blue divide in climate education. More than one-third of young adults believe that climate change is not man-made, and science instructors are being contradicted by history teachers who tell children not to worry about it. Who has tried to influence what children learn, and how successful have they been? Worth connects the dots on oil corporations, state legislatures, school boards, libertarian thinktanks, conservative lobbyists, and textbook publishers, all of whom have learned from the fight over evolution and tobacco, and are now sowing uncertainty, confusion, and distrust about climate science, with the result that four in five Americans today don't think there is a scientific consensus on global warming. In the words of a top climate educator, "We are the only country in the world that has had a multi-decade, multi-billion dollar deny-delay-confuse campaign." Miseducation is the alarming story of how climate denialism was implanted in millions of school children.

Girls into Science and Technology - The Story of a Project (Hardcover): Judith Whyte Girls into Science and Technology - The Story of a Project (Hardcover)
Judith Whyte
R4,084 Discovery Miles 40 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1985. This book describes the Girls Into Science and Technology (GIST) Project, an action research programme carried out in co-educational comprehensive schools in Greater Manchester. GIST simultaneously took action to redress the balance of girls in science and technology and investigated the reasons for the shortfall. The book highlights the world of the typical school science lab and craft workshop where boys and girls compete with each other and teachers treat the two sexes differently. It reveals how boys and girls view science and sex roles and how their attitudes changed during the course of the project. The GIST team worked with science and craft teachers to alter school factors which discourage girls from continuing with scientific and technical subjects. The author describes the reactions of teachers and pupils to intervention strategies, which included visits to schools by women working in technical jobs, development of teaching material more orientated towards girls' interests and a humanistic view of science, observations in school labs and workshops, and careers education linked to option choices in school. In the final chapters she spells out the lessons to be learned for teachers and those engaged in training, and evaluates the national impact of the GIST project.

Mark Childs, Robby Soetanto
R4,911 Discovery Miles 49 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Global Collaboration initiatives related in this book are examples of how educators have experimented with different mechanisms to provide science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education programmes through information and communication technologies. In many cases, these programmes have looked at the allied personal communication and collaboration skills that students of these subjects also need: the so-called STEM+ curriculum. In particular, these approaches to STEM+ provision show how the internationalization of education can be made more effective and accessible through the exploitation of collaborative technologies and non-traditional pedagogies. The approaches address the following themes: technologies for distance learning and collaboration pedagogies for online learning remote communication and collaboration An international perspective is made possible within the book through the inclusion of authors from North America, Europe and Asia. These authors present case studies from technology-enhanced learning projects over the past six years.

Virtual Reality in Higher Education - Instruction for the Digital Age (Hardcover): Darrel W. Staat Virtual Reality in Higher Education - Instruction for the Digital Age (Hardcover)
Darrel W. Staat
R2,851 Discovery Miles 28 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Virtual Reality in Higher Education: Instruction for the Digital Age brings to the foreground how Virtual Reality, using headsets in educational and training programs, is already beginning to be used in higher education. The book is the result of research to determine where and how virtual reality is being used in higher education, recruitment, and athletics. The book cites specific examples and methods used in teaching, training, and recruitment that would be of interest to faculty and administrators in community colleges and universities. The book is written to help faculty to understand the potential of VR for education, administrators to see possibilities for student recruitment, and athletic directors and sports program coaches to determine the advantage of new avenues for successful training. It is critical that faculty and administrators investigate the potential of VR for teaching, learning, recruitment, and athletics. This technology provides an immersive method that could create serious changes in how faculty teach, students learn, institutions recruit, and athletic programs train.
