Science, engineering, and technology permeate nearly every facet of modern life and hold the key to solving many of humanity's most pressing current and future challenges. The United States' position in the global economy is declining, in part because U.S. workers lack fundamental knowledge in these fields. To address the critical issues of U.S. competitiveness and to better prepare the workforce, A Framework for K-12 Science Education proposes a new approach to K-12 science education that will capture students' interest and provide them with the necessary foundational knowledge in the field. A Framework for K-12 Science Education outlines a broad set of expectations for students in science and engineering in grades K-12. These expectations will inform the development of new standards for K-12 science education and, subsequently, revisions to curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development for educators. This book identifies three dimensions that convey the core ideas and practices around which science and engineering education in these grades should be built. These three dimensions are: crosscutting concepts that unify the study of science through their common application across science and engineering; scientific and engineering practices; and disciplinary core ideas in the physical sciences, life sciences, and earth and space sciences and for engineering, technology, and the applications of science. The overarching goal is for all high school graduates to have sufficient knowledge of science and engineering to engage in public discussions on science-related issues, be careful consumers of scientific and technical information, and enter the careers of their choice. A Framework for K-12 Science Education is the first step in a process that can inform state-level decisions and achieve a research-grounded basis for improving science instruction and learning across the country. The book will guide standards developers, teachers, curriculum designers, assessment developers, state and district science administrators, and educators who teach science in informal environments. Justice and Equity in Climate Change Education - Exploring Social and Ethical Dimensions of Environmental Education... Justice and Equity in Climate Change Education - Exploring Social and Ethical Dimensions of Environmental Education (Hardcover)
Elizabeth M. Walsh
R4,509 Discovery Miles 45 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume looks at the ways in which climate change education relates to broader ideas of justice, equity, and social transformation, and ultimately calls for a rapid response to the need for climate education reform. Highlighting the role of climate change in exacerbating existing societal injustices, this text explores the ethical and social dimensions of climate change education, including identity, agency, and societal structure, and in doing so problematizes climate change education as an equity concern. Chapters present empirical analysis, underpinned by a theoretical framework, and case studies which provide critical insights for the design of learning environments, curricula, and everyday climate change-related learning in schools. This text will benefit researchers, academics, educators, and policymakers with an interest in science education, social justice studies, and environmental sociology more broadly. Those specifically interested in climate education, curriculum studies, and climate adaption will also benefit from this book.

Len Unsworth, Russell Tytler, Lisl Fenwick, Sally Humphrey, Paul Chandler, …
R4,505 Discovery Miles 45 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book establishes a new theoretical and practical framework for multimodal disciplinary literacy (MDL) fused with the subject-specific science pedagogies of senior high school biology, chemistry and physics. It builds a compatible alignment of multiple representation and representation construction approaches to science pedagogy with the social semiotic, systemic functional linguistic-based approaches to explicit teaching of disciplinary literacy. The early part of the book explicates the transdisciplinary negotiated theoretical underpinning of the MDL framework, followed by the research-informed repertoire of learning experiences that are then articulated into a comprehensive framework of options for the planning of classroom work. Practical adoption and adaptation of the framework in biology, chemistry and physics classrooms are detailed in separate chapters. The latter chapters indicate the impact of the collaborative research on teachers' professional learning and students' multimodal disciplinary literacy engagement, concluding with proposals for accommodating emerging developments in MDL in an ever-changing digital communication world. The MDL framework is designed to enable teachers to develop all students' disciplinary literacy competencies. This book will be of interest to researchers, teacher educators and postgraduate students in the field of science education. It will also have appeal to those in literacy education and social semiotics. Elizabeth Stringer Keefe, Adam Steiner
R1,721 Discovery Miles 17 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Remixing the Curriculum offers educators a way to rethink traditional curricular approaches through a "curricular remix," a concept in which a curriculum becomes different from its original form, retaining its basic foundational elements, but experiencing a metamorphosis to create a new version. Remixing the Curriculum suggests that the way to develop curriculum to maximize student access and engagement is to employ essential elements of traditional pedagogy, but infuse it with technology to create new features through the X Framework (XFW). XFW capitalizes on four essential features of educators' practice and learning: Technology Fitness, in which a teacher self-evaluates their comfort level using technology; Proactive Teaching, which front-loads the planning and preparation for instruction to prior to implementation; Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a set of principles which guide the conditions for learning, including flexible learning environments to accommodate individual learning differences; and Assistive Technology, technology to improve the capabilities of students with disabilities. At the intersection of these four quadrants is X, which serves as a fulcrum for access to the curriculum.

Spectral Theory of Multivalued Linear Operators (Hardcover): Aymen Ammar, Aref Jeribi Spectral Theory of Multivalued Linear Operators (Hardcover)
Aymen Ammar, Aref Jeribi
R4,057 Discovery Miles 40 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The concept of multivalued linear operators-or linear relations-is the one of the most exciting and influential fields of research in modern mathematics. Applications of this theory can be found in economic theory, noncooperative games, artificial intelligence, medicine, and more. This new book focuses on the theory of linear relations, responding to the lack of resources exclusively dealing with the spectral theory of multivalued linear operators. The subject of this book is the study of linear relations over real or complex Banach spaces. The main purposes are the definitions and characterization of different kinds of spectra and extending the notions of spectra that are considered for the usual one single-valued operator bounded or not bounded. The volume introduces the theory of pseudospectra of multivalued linear operators. The main topics include demicompact linear relations, essential spectra of linear relation, pseudospectra, and essential pseudospectra of linear relations. The volume will be very useful for researchers since it represents not only a collection of a previously heterogeneous material but is also an innovation through several extensions. Beginning graduate students who wish to enter the field of spectral theory of multivalued linear operators will benefit from the material covered, and expert readers will also find sources of inspiration.
