Charles Darwin (Paperback): Anita Croy Charles Darwin (Paperback)
Anita Croy
R234 Discovery Miles 2 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Darwin's theory of evolution changed how people saw the world and their place in it. He challenged the long-held belief that God had created every living thing in its current shape, and showed how he believed that animals had evolved, or changed over time. This book looks at Darwin's life and work, and shows how his discoveries both changed society at the time and influenced people in the future.

The Three Little Green Pigs, LLC - A Recycling Pig Tale (Hardcover): Richard Oldenburg The Three Little Green Pigs, LLC - A Recycling Pig Tale (Hardcover)
Richard Oldenburg; Illustrated by Samantha May Cerney
R395 Discovery Miles 3 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Three Little Pigs go green in the updated children's book The Three Little Green Pigs, LLC: A Recycling Pig Tale. The descendants of the original Three Little Pigs are now in the construction business building green homes out of recyclable materials. A contest pits the pigs against one another and the winner will be able to build his home throughout the town. Using different recyclable materials, the winning pig must satisfy the city inspector (a descendant of the Big Bad Wolf ). The story ends with the wolf purchasing an ecological home that has several modern changes, and the winning pig hiring his two cousins. This is one home that no one can huff and puff and blow the house down Richard Oldenburg is an avid storyteller and volunteers monthly to read to children at libraries and schools in Bear Valley Springs, California. He promotes the "art of imagination" through his storytelling. One evening while discussing old folk and fairy tales with his wife, a thought was planted. Could an old fairytale be brought up to date? The result is this book, now dedicated to his wife of 28 years. A graduate of California State University, Long Beach with a BA and MA in education, the author enjoyed 32 years of teaching and working with staffs throughout California. He now enjoys retirement, his grandchildren, and working with veteran organizations as a bugler. Publisher's website: http: //sbpra.com/RichardOldenburg

Nanoscience Research Modules for Pre-Service STEM Teachers - Core Nanoscience Concepts as a Vehicle in STEM Education... Nanoscience Research Modules for Pre-Service STEM Teachers - Core Nanoscience Concepts as a Vehicle in STEM Education (Hardcover)
Clair T. Berube, Shawn T Dash, Cindy Thomas-Charles
R2,652 Discovery Miles 26 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) is a fairly new concept in American education. As separate subjects, science and math have been around for a long time but have rarely been taught as a seamless unit of skills; rather as discreet content areas. This is not how the real world outside of the classroom functions however; in actual research laboratories scientists infuse their science with math, and their math with science, and along with technology and engineering they solve real life problems. In practice you cannot separate the various fields, as you need all of them in order to discover the underpinnings of the natural world, cure a disease, or solve a problem with the space rover. The American future depends on a scientifically literate workforce, armed with knowledge about the laws and theories of science, based on empirical facts instead of beliefs. In addition, there is a shortage of graduates in STEM related disciplines. Economic data show that 1 million additional STEM graduates will be needed over the next decade to fill America's economic demand. STEM based jobs are expected to grow 17% in the next 10 years, outpacing the overall job growth of 10%. If teachers across America were trained with fundamental and impending scientific concepts in their science-methods courses at the university level, scientific literacy can only dramatically improve. Nanoscience is one such concept; as it is multidisciplinary in nature and is regarded as the basis for innovated technologies in many fields. The authors of this book seek to provide pre-service and in-service science teachers with high-quality STEM modules, with which to create lesson plans and problem-based lessons to use in their future classrooms, both at the elementary and secondary level. Nanoscience was chosen since its applications reaches across virtually every scientific field; from biology to physics and for that matter all STEM domains.

It's never too early to start exploring big ideas. This companion volume to 'My First Book of Quantum Physics' introduces complex science to children through bright illustrations and amusing text. Einstein's theory of relativity is one of the cornerstones of modern physics but it requires a total rethink of our notions of time and space. Strange things happen in a relative universe: length and time are not fixed and depend upon your frame of reference. If you move at high speed, time slows down, space contracts and weight increases. So a period of time for someone on Earth that lasts for hundreds of years may only be a couple of hours for someone travelling in a rocket close to the speed of light. It's mind-boggling stuff, but the theory of relativity has a real impact on our world today. A car's GPS navigation system, for example, uses information received from orbiting satellites and is designed to account for the fact that time ticks at a different rate on these satellites than it does on the ground. Without allowing for relativity's effects, after just a day, your whereabouts according to GPS could be up to 5 miles (8km) from your actual location. So to find out more about how our universe works and how space and time are connected, look no further than this fascinating, illustrated guide to relativity.
