Developed to bridge the content covered in psychology survey
courses and more advanced undergraduate psychology curriculum,
Psychology as a Science and a Profession helps students better
understand psychological science and the variety of potential
careers available to them within the field. Throughout the text,
students are empowered to find relevant research articles in
scientific journals, recognize their predictable structure, and
comprehend the main points of a study. They learn how to evaluate
scientific claims made in the media and other non-scientific
outlets. In exploring these various facets of psychological
science, students gain a greater understanding of the discipline
and can better determine if a career in psychology is for them. The
book is organized into three sections. Unit I defines psychology
and psychologists' roles, presents the rationale for studying the
discipline, shares best practices to help students succeed in their
psychological studies, and provides an overview of careers in
psychology and other related areas. The chapters in Unit II begin
with an overview of scientific principles, next address strategies
for success in finding, reading, and writing psychological science,
and conclude with ethics in psychology. The final unit addresses
principles of research as applied to psychology. Psychology as a
Science and a Profession is an ideal textbook for courses and
programs in psychology, especially those emphasizing research
methodology.
The third edition of the Student Study Guide With IBM (R) SPSS (R)
Workbook for Research Methods, Statistics, and Applications by
Kathrynn A. Adams and Eva K. McGuire gives students even more
opportunities to practice and apply their knowledge in statistics
and research methods. Written by the authors of Research Methods,
Statistics, and Applications, the third edition of the study guide
follows the third edition of the textbook for straightforward
assigning and practice. New features include practice quizzes to
give students both recognition and recall activities for better
retention. Learning objectives and brief chapter summaries from the
main text remind students of what they've learned and orient
students toward the exercises. In-depth exercises encourage
students to build on their knowledge, requiring students to think
critically and actively engage with the material. These exercises
have been condensed and focus on moving students through the
learning objectives at a quick pace. At the end of most chapters,
"Your Research" sections encourage students to apply concepts to
their own projects. Now placed at the end of book, the IBM (R) SPSS
(R) workbook provides instructions for performing statistical
calculations. Included in this workbook are additional exercises to
practice data analysis and interpretation using the software.
Answers to quizzes are listed immediately after each quiz in the
book while answers to exercises are listed on the instructor
resources website.
Measurement connects theoretical concepts to what is observable in
the empirical world, and is fundamental to all social and
behavioral research. In this volume, J. Micah Roos and Shawn
Bauldry introduce a popular approach to measurement: Confirmatory
Factor Analysis (CFA). As the authors explain, CFA is a
theoretically informed statistical framework for linking multiple
observed variables to latent variables that are not directly
measurable. The authors begin by defining terms, introducing
notation, and illustrating a wide variety of measurement models
with different relationships between latent and observed variables.
They proceed to a thorough treatment of model estimation, followed
by a discussion of model fit. Most of the volume focuses on
measures that approximate continuous variables, but the authors
also devote a chapter to categorical indicators. Each chapter
develops a different example (sometimes two) covering topics as
diverse as racist attitudes, theological conservatism, leadership
qualities, psychological distress, self-efficacy, beliefs about
democracy, and Christian nationalism drawn mainly from national
surveys. Data to replicate the examples are available on a
companion website, along with code for R, Stata, and Mplus.
This book fills a gap in international literature by providing
critical reviews on variables of organizational behavior and the
main psychological instruments developed to measure them. Measuring
instruments developed with theoretical and methodological rigor in
the field of Organizational and Work Psychology can contribute to
the development of diagnostic analyses to enable organizations to
implement the evidence-based changes required for their survival.
These changes demand diagnoses based on precise assessments of
organizational and individual variables, but many times the
professionals responsible for conducting these assessments are not
sure of what is the best measuring instrument available. This book
is intended to serve as a guide to these professionals. The volume
is divided in two parts. The first part brings together chapters
dedicated to the following micro-organizational variables: Job
Crafting, reactions to organizational change, Psychological
Wellbeing at Work, Bridge Employment Assessment in the
Work-Retirement Transition, Resilience at Work, and Leadership in
Organizations. The second part presents the state-of-the-art of
research on the following macro-organizational constructs: Quality
of Life at Work, Organizational Climate for Creativity, Values and
Organizations, Assessments of Organizational Support, and
Contributions by Social Networks Analysis and Organizational
Effectiveness. The last chapter presents a critical discussion
about the nature and future of organization behavior measuring.
Assessing Organizational Behaviors: A Critical Analysis of
Measuring Instruments is intended to help market professionals
select the diagnostic instruments that best fit into their
organizational reality in order to correctly assess organizational
behavior. The book will also be of interest to researchers and
students in the field of Organizational and Work Psychology as it
provides comprehensive overviews of a wide range of instruments
developed to measure different variables of organizational
behavior.
This open access textbook provides the background needed to
correctly use, interpret and understand statistics and statistical
data in diverse settings. Part I makes key concepts in statistics
readily clear. Parts I and II give an overview of the most common
tests (t-test, ANOVA, correlations) and work out their statistical
principles. Part III provides insight into meta-statistics
(statistics of statistics) and demonstrates why experiments often
do not replicate. Finally, the textbook shows how complex
statistics can be avoided by using clever experimental design. Both
non-scientists and students in Biology, Biomedicine and Engineering
will benefit from the book by learning the statistical basis of
scientific claims and by discovering ways to evaluate the quality
of scientific reports in academic journals and news outlets.
