The Savvy Academic - Publishing in the Social and Health Sciences (Paperback): Seth J. Schwartz The Savvy Academic - Publishing in the Social and Health Sciences (Paperback)
Seth J. Schwartz
R1,379 Discovery Miles 13 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This approachable guide meets health and social sciences scholars at their level-either as a reference text or as an enchanting but practical read-and walks them through each stage of their academic publishing journey. Drawing on a wealth of examples from his own experience mentoring others and publishing 300+ articles, Dr. Schwartz engages early, mid-, and senior-level professionals as well as graduate students and postdoctoral fellows alike, to demystify each stage of the writing and publishing process. Employing a reader-friendly, accessible voice, Dr. Schwartz's style captivates readers across disciplines, with a refreshing, can-do perspective. Before diving in, the author relates his own personal story in scholarly publishing, inviting all academics to unlock the high-impact writer within. The next set of chapters tackle the nuts and bolts of the academic publishing process, with basics such as topic selection, data analysis for publication, writing preparation, drafting and editing manuscripts, and journals submissions. The book advances into more innovative topics that can be simultaneously intimidating and rewarding, including recruiting and collaborating with coauthors, developing a network, navigating the peer review process, publishing nonempirical papers, getting creative with rejected manuscripts, foraying into Open Access and fee-based publishing, and even how to publish a book or book chapter. Designed as a digital mentor, The Savvy Academic is the ultimate tool for students, fellows, and scholarly professionals of a broad range of experiences in the health and social sciences who are looking to launch or elevate their scholarly publication career.

From Antarctica to Outer Space - Life in Isolation and Confinement (Paperback, 1991): Albert A Harrison From Antarctica to Outer Space - Life in Isolation and Confinement (Paperback, 1991)
Albert A Harrison; Foreword by E. K. Eric Gunderson; Edited by Yvonne A. Clearwater, Christopher P McKay
R2,690 Discovery Miles 26 900 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

From Antarctica to Outer Space: Life in Isolation and Confinement aims to revitalize and encourage behavioral research in spaceflight as well as in polar and comparable settings. It comprises a broad collection of papers that evolved from presentations at a three day conference entitled The Human Experience in Antarctica: Applications to Life in Space (The Sunnyvale Conference). This conference was co-sponsored by the Division of Polar Programs of the National Science Foundation and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and held in 1987. The book provides, through firsthand accounts and research reviews, an introduction to the human facet in isolated and confined environments such as Antarctica, outer space, submarines, and remote national parks. The book discusses some of the theoretical issues underlying research on isolated and confined people, thus demonstrating the applicability of certain general theories of behavior. It also focuses on basic psychological and social responses to isolation and confinement. Studies whose primary purpose is to explore the effects of selection, training, and environmental design on human behavior and mission outcomes are discussed.

Mad Knowledges and User-Led Research (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Diana Susan Rose Mad Knowledges and User-Led Research (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Diana Susan Rose
R2,677 Discovery Miles 26 770 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents a critical examination of the development of user involvement within research, and investigates the issues currently preventing a productive integration of Mad knowledges within research and practice. Drawing on social, linguistic and critical theories, it proposes the conditions needed to address the development of Mad epistemologies. The author's unique approach deliberately highlights her own positionality and draws on decades of experience as a service recipient, survivor, activist and researcher to illustrate the structural and symbolic barriers faced. Employing concepts including epistemic injustice, individualization, normalization and structural violence, it suggests a radically new way of articulating 'what's the matter with us?' In doing so, the book itself goes some way towards enacting the radical challenge to academic and epistemic hierarchies which, it is argued, will be required to further advance mad knowledges and user-led research. Crucially, it demonstrates how this approach can be both methodologically and conceptually rigorous. This novel work holds important insights for students and scholars across the humanities and social sciences; particularly those working in the areas of critical psychology, disability studies, Mad studies, feminist studies, critical race theory, and Queer theory.

Enterprising Psychometrics and Poverty Reduction (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Bailey Klinger, Asim Ijaz Khwaja, Carlos del Carpio Enterprising Psychometrics and Poverty Reduction (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Bailey Klinger, Asim Ijaz Khwaja, Carlos del Carpio
R1,582 Discovery Miles 15 820 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book uses newly collected data with nearly 2000 observations across Africa and Latin America of SME owner/operators to examine if psychometric tools can distinguish the good ones from the bad ones. This book fully describes the development problem and how psychometric tools can help solve it. Moreover, it presents and develops the unique statistical methodologies to deploy psychometric tools for credit screening. This will be the single complete publication of the work to date by the entrepreneurial finance lab, created by Klinger & Khwaja. This work started as a research project at Harvard University's center for international development, with funding from Google.org. This work is very high profile, winning the G-20 SME Finance Challenge in 2010 (global open competition to identify the best scalable solutions to unlocking SME finance- winners honored at the G-20 summit in Seoul Korea and receiving significant funding from G-20 countries for the implementation of their models).

The Portable Mentor - Expert Guide to a Successful Career in Psychology (Paperback, 2nd ed. 2013): Mitchell J. Prinstein The Portable Mentor - Expert Guide to a Successful Career in Psychology (Paperback, 2nd ed. 2013)
Mitchell J. Prinstein
R3,821 Discovery Miles 38 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The ten year anniversary of the book offers an excellent opportunity to publish a second edition. Several aspects of the book have evolved considerably since its first printing. For instance, substantial revision to the internship, licensure, and certification processes has occurred, and are reflected in this resource. Much of the literature on clinical psychology, cultural sensitivity, and the current job market is updated. Changes in technology have large effects on teaching and practicing clinical psychology. These modifications are needed to offer appropriate and updated information for students. In short, virtually every chapter has substantial modification to ensure that the material is accurate and up to date.

Falling Through the Cracks - Psychodynamic Practice with Vulnerable and Oppressed Populations (Hardcover): Joan Berzoff Falling Through the Cracks - Psychodynamic Practice with Vulnerable and Oppressed Populations (Hardcover)
Joan Berzoff
R2,225 Discovery Miles 22 250 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Psychodynamic theory and practice are often misunderstood as appropriate only for the worried well or for those whose problems are minimal or routine. Nothing could be further from the truth. This book shows how psychodynamically informed, clinically based social care is essential to working with individuals whose problems are both psychological and social. Each chapter addresses populations struggling with structural inequities, such as racism, classism, and discrimination based on immigrant status, language differences, disability, and sexual orientation. The authors explain how to provide psychodynamically informed assessment and practice when working with those suffering from mental illness, addiction, homelessness, and cognitive, visual, or auditory impairments, as well as people in prisons, in orphanages, and on child welfare. The volume supports the idea that becoming aware of ourselves helps us understand ourselves: a key approach for helping clients contain and name their feelings, deal with desire and conflict, achieve self-regulation and self-esteem, and alter attachment styles toward greater agency and empowerment. Yet autonomy and empowerment are not birthrights; they are capacities that must be fostered under optimal clinical conditions. This collection uses concepts derived from drive theory, ego psychology, object relations, trauma theory, attachment theory, self psychology, relational theories, and intersubjectivity in clinical work with vulnerable and oppressed populations. Contributors are experienced practitioners whose work with vulnerable populations has enabled them to elicit and find common humanity with their clients. The authors consistently convey respect for the considerable strength and resilience of the populations with whom they work. Emphasizing both the inner and social structural lives of client and clinician and their interacting social identities, this anthology uniquely realizes the complexity of clinical practice with diverse populations.

Experimental Psychology, Cognition, and Human Aging (Paperback, 2nd ed. 1991. Softcover reprint of the original 2nd ed. 1991):... Experimental Psychology, Cognition, and Human Aging (Paperback, 2nd ed. 1991. Softcover reprint of the original 2nd ed. 1991)
Donald H. Kausler
R1,563 Discovery Miles 15 630 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is a major revision and extension of my earlier book, Experimental Psychology and Human Aging, which appeared in 1982. The intervening years have seen a remarkable expansion of psychological research on human aging, especially on topics dealing with cognition. They have also seen research on cognitive aging gain increasing importance within the mainstream of basic cognitive research. As my lecture notes for my course in the psychology of aging grew, so did my apprehension regarding the task ahead of me in revis ing the first edition. The research explosion in cognitive aging forced several major changes in content from the first to the second edition. Two chapters on learning and memory in the first edition were necessarily expanded to six chapters in the present edition. Similarly, the single prior chapter on percep tion and attention became two chapters, as did the single prior chapter on thinking. Another change from the first edition is in the addition of some review of the effects of abnormal aging on various cognitive processes, parti cularly in regard to memory functioning. To keep the revision within reason able length, some sacrifices had to be made. The multiple chapters on metho dology and theory in the first edition were condensed into the present, single chapter. However, the major topics from the first edition were retained and, in fact, added to by the inclusion of important topics and issues that emerged over the past eight years.

Dreaming Culture - Meanings, Models, and Power in U.S. American Dreams (Paperback, 1st ed. 2011): J. Mageo Dreaming Culture - Meanings, Models, and Power in U.S. American Dreams (Paperback, 1st ed. 2011)
J. Mageo
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Dreams seem the most private territory of experience. Yet Dreaming Culture argues they are a space in which we practice, consider, question, and adapt cultural models of the self, gender, sexuality, relationships, and agency. Through an innovative "dream ethnography" from college students in the northwestern U.S., this book contributes to recent research on dreaming and the brain in psychology and continuing research on dreaming and the self in clinical psychology and psychological anthropology. Dreaming Culture uses critical theory to understand power relations embedded in cultural models, a perspective often lacking in cognitive anthropology and in psychological studies of self and mind.

Behavioral Research Data Analysis with R (Paperback, 2012): Yuelin Li, Jonathan Baron Behavioral Research Data Analysis with R (Paperback, 2012)
Yuelin Li, Jonathan Baron
R2,078 Discovery Miles 20 780 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is written for behavioral scientists who want to consider adding R to their existing set of statistical tools, or want to switch to R as their main computation tool. The authors aim primarily to help practitioners of behavioral research make the transition to R. The focus is to provide practical advice on some of the widely-used statistical methods in behavioral research, using a set of notes and annotated examples. The book will also help beginners learn more about statistics and behavioral research. These are statistical techniques used by psychologists who do research on human subjects, but of course they are also relevant to researchers in others fields that do similar kinds of research.

The authors emphasize practical data analytic skills so that they can be quickly incorporated into readers own research. "

Cultural Psychology and Qualitative Methodology - Theoretical and Empirical Considerations (Paperback, Softcover reprint of... Cultural Psychology and Qualitative Methodology - Theoretical and Empirical Considerations (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 1997)
Carl Ratner
R2,730 Discovery Miles 27 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Qualitative methodologies in cultural psychology often lack the objective and verifiable character of quantitative analysis. Author Carl Ratner corrects this shortcoming by rigorously systematizing qualitative methods. The book discusses, for example, means of systematizing such subjective reports as interviews, letters, and diaries, which often yield valuable data that is not easily quantified. Ratner argues that "complex psychological phenomena are expressed through extended responses" and hence are best studied by new, more regularized qualitative methods that go beyond measuring simple, overt responses.

BIOGRAPHICAL RESEARCH (Paperback, Ed): Brian Roberts BIOGRAPHICAL RESEARCH (Paperback, Ed)
Brian Roberts
R894 Discovery Miles 8 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Roberts is certainly successful in conveying a sense of the rich diversity of biographical research. This is a book based upon a formidably wide-ranging bibliography together with his own, by no means insignificant, contributions to the field...[the]...reader will be left in no doubt as to the central importance of biographical research and of its legitimate position within the social sciences" - David Morgan, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, Manchester University (former President, British Sociological Association), Auto/Biography, a BSA Study Group journal, 2002."Brian Roberts' book is a highly accessible introduction to biographical method...The author deftly and confidently addresses the available work in a variety of disciplines ranging from education through oral history, feminism to memory... I warmly recommend this book to any historian interested in biography and what its study can tell them about what they do'. - Alun Munslow, Professor of History, Staffordshire University (Editor, Rethinking History), Rethinking History, 7:3, pp. 451-5, October, 2003* What is biographical research? * Why has it attracted so much interest? * How can biographical research be carried out? Biographical Research reflects a rapid expansion of interest in the study of lives taking place within the social sciences. Life story, oral history, narrative, autobiography, biography and other approaches are being used more and more to explore how individuals interpret experiences and social relationships. This book examines the methodological and theoretical developments associated with research on lives in sociology, oral history, ethnography, biography, and narrative analysis. The author includes numerous examples of biographical research from his own work and other studies, and addresses important areas such as the collection and interpretation of materials, uses of biographical research, oral and written accounts, the interview relationship, the construction of the story, memory, audience, and the researcher's own biography. In conclusion it draws out common themes and emerging concerns. Biographical Research is a comprehensive guide to major issues in the study of lives for students and researchers in the social sciences and related fields.

Statistik Im Forschungsprozess - Eine Philosophie Der Statistik ALS Baustein Einer Integrativen Wissenschaftstheorie (German,... Statistik Im Forschungsprozess - Eine Philosophie Der Statistik ALS Baustein Einer Integrativen Wissenschaftstheorie (German, Hardcover, 2011 ed.)
Uwe Saint-Mont
R3,683 Discovery Miles 36 830 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Statistics - A Gentle Introduction (Paperback, 4th Revised edition): Frederick L. Coolidge Statistics - A Gentle Introduction (Paperback, 4th Revised edition)
Frederick L. Coolidge
R4,046 Discovery Miles 40 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Fourth Edition of Statistics: A Gentle Introduction shows students that an introductory statistics class doesn't need to be difficult or dull. This text minimizes students' anxieties about math by explaining the concepts of statistics in plain language first, before addressing the math. Each formula within the text has a step-by-step example to demonstrate the calculation so students can follow along. Only those formulas that are important for final calculations are included in the text so students can focus on the concepts, not the numbers. A wealth of real-world examples and applications gives a context for statistics in the real world and how it helps us solve problems and make informed choices. New to the Fourth Edition are sections on working with big data, new coverage of alternative non-parametric tests, beta coefficients, and the "nocebo effect," discussions of p values in the context of research, an expanded discussion of confidence intervals, and more exercises and homework options under the new feature "Test Yourself." Included with this title: The password-protected Instructor Resource Site (formally known as SAGE Edge) offers access to all text-specific resources, including a test bank and editable, chapter-specific PowerPoint (R) slides.

Qualitative Analysis Using MAXQDA - The Five-Level QDA (TM) Method (Paperback): Nicholas H. Woolf, Christina Silver Qualitative Analysis Using MAXQDA - The Five-Level QDA (TM) Method (Paperback)
Nicholas H. Woolf, Christina Silver
R1,296 Discovery Miles 12 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Software is cut-and-dried - every button you press has a predictable effect - but qualitative analysis is open-ended and unfolds in unpredictable ways. This contradiction is best resolved by separating analytic strategies - what you plan to do - from software tactics - how you plan to do it. Expert MAXQDA users have unconsciously learned to do this. The Five-Level QDA (R) method unpacks the process so that you can learn it consciously and efficiently. The first part of the book explains how the contradiction between analytic strategies and software tactics is reconciled by "translating" between them. The second part provides both an in-depth description of how MAXQDA works and comprehensive instruction in the five steps of "translation". These steps are illustrated with examples from a variety of research projects. The third part contains real-world qualitative research projects from a variety of disciplines, methodologies, and kinds of qualitative analysis, all illustrated in MAXQDA using the Five-Level QDA method. The book is accompanied by three sets of video demonstrations on the Companion Website. The functionality and interface design of MAXQDA for Windows and Mac are identical. The Five-Level QDA method learned from this book is therefore the same whether you are working on a Mac or Windows computer. The Five-Level QDA method is based on the authors' combined 40 years of experience teaching MAXQDA and other software packages used as platforms for conducting qualitative analysis. After many years observing their students' challenges they developed the Five-Level QDA method to describe the process that long-time MAXQDA experts unconsciously adopt. The Five-Level QDA method is independent of software program or methodology, and the principles apply to any type of qualitative project.
