Career Development in the Schools (Hardcover): Grafton Eliason, John Patrick Career Development in the Schools (Hardcover)
Grafton Eliason, John Patrick
R2,680 Discovery Miles 26 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A volume in Issues in Career Development Book Series Edited by John Patrick and Grafton Eliason, California University of Pennsylvania Career Development in the Schools describes a dynamic process that continues to evolve in its rationale and practice. In many schools and in a variety of scholarly writings, the status of career development is controversial. Some observers assert that career development should be seen as a by-product of all of the knowledge and activities that are incorporated in the educational experience. In this view, career development tends to be seen as a random process that happens in a natural, almost magical way, without specific direction or structured form. However, most career theorists would argue that the career development of students should be a major mission of the school a process too important to be only a by-product of scattered learning and activities that are inherently uneven from student to student. The prevailing contemporary perspective contends that career development in the schools should be planned, have its own content derived from research and theory, be systematically executed, and use methods that are relevant to the developmental levels of students throughout elementary, middle, and senior high schools. To further such ends, several national models of content and practice have been formulated by the American School Counselor Association, the National Career Development Revised Guidance Project, and by other organizations to identify the components, competencies, and outcomes that students of different ages and aspirations need to acquire as they grow in maturity. Several of these models are discussed at length in the various chapters of this book.

Jeffrey W. Garis, Edwin L Herr, Jack Rayman
R2,526 Discovery Miles 25 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This professional reference provides a comprehensive historical, theoretical, and practical overview of career centers in colleges and universities. The authors present and discuss various models of providing career services as well as ways to work with various constituent groups of clients. The volume emphasizes the pragmatics of planning, managing, and implementing career centers and provides examples of forms, policies, and strategies that have been proven to work. While the focus of the book is on practicality, the book emphasizes how theory should guide practice. The reference gives direct and proven examples of how to implement a comprehensive array of career services in a college or university. The authors address three points that are fundamental in providing career services. First, they trace the evolution of the delivery of college career services and they review various career center models. Second, they provide information and strategies that are necessary for the planning, organization, staffing, funding, and management of a college career center. Third, they review a range of services that may be provided by career centers, including counseling, assessment, computer-based guidance systems, programming, career information, and placement. Each chapter includes a list of references, and a selected bibliography concludes the work. The result is a reference bound to be of value to a wide range of student services personnel.

Voices of Reason - Adolescents Talk About Their Futures Over Time (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed): Stephen B. Sachs Voices of Reason - Adolescents Talk About Their Futures Over Time (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed)
Stephen B. Sachs
R2,841 Discovery Miles 28 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In their own words, ten diverse adolescents talk about their school experiences, family issues, societal problems and their own attempt to deal with social inequities. The book is also a study of future talk, as jointly constructed attempts by students at making sense of their educational and vocational goals and their own sense of where the education and guidance systems have helped or failed them. Using tools of discourse analysis developed for this study, Dr. Sachs presents a systematic way of looking at the construction of groundedness in social contexts, particularly how and how effectively adolescents construct their arguments for the choices they make.

The business of education touches many facets of society, and this study will be of interest to practitioners who wish to become qualitative researchers, for students in qualitative methods courses, and for middle and high school guidance sources including teachers and parents who want to better understand adolescents' concerns. And it is a book for adolescents themselves who, in reading what their peers are saying, can reflect on their own sense of where they are currently and in which direction they want to go.

Navigating the Academic Career - Common Issues and Uncommon Strategies (Hardcover, New): Victor N. Shaw Navigating the Academic Career - Common Issues and Uncommon Strategies (Hardcover, New)
Victor N. Shaw
R2,670 Discovery Miles 26 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There is an urgent need to provide academic professionals with individual, institutional, and contextual accounts of their careers and career-making endeavors. An individual account makes academicians think about what they do and how they might do it better. An institutional account makes academicians reflect upon the organizational environment in which they function and ponder what they might do to improve it. A contextual account connects academicians and their work to knowledge, the knowledge enterprise, and the larger social structure so that they know and understand the impact they and their career-making efforts have on themselves, academia, and general social processes. This book examines academic careers and career-making activities with respect to their main aspects, milestones, and general pathways. In content, it divides into four identifiable parts. Part I focuses on professional preparation. It examines education, degree, reeducation, job search, and job change. Part II centers on organizational employment. It investigates position, research, teaching, service, and tenure. Part III revolves around professional networking. It looks into publication, conference presentation, application for grants and awards, and membership in academic associations. Part IV rises above specific issues. It explores general career pathways and overall scholarly identity.
