I-Gel Supraglottic Airway (Hardcover): Pavel Michalek, William Donaldson I-Gel Supraglottic Airway (Hardcover)
Pavel Michalek, William Donaldson
R4,044 Discovery Miles 40 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The I-Gel supraglottic airway is a diposable, latex-free device for airway management during anaesthesia. The design of this device is significantly different from the previously used devices, notably laryngeal mask airways. Its bowl is made of a soft, non-inflatable thermoplastic elastomer, anatomically preformed to mirror the perilaryngeal structure. The I-Gel contains an additional epiglottis rest, which helps to prevent the epiglottis from down-folding or obstructing the laryngeal inlet. The device also includes a gastric channel, allowing drainage of air and gastric contents or passage of a gastric tube. This book provides a brief history of airway management and the classification of supraglottic airway devices; the mechanisms and forces contributing to their seal, and highlights the main differences between the devices. Also discussed is the process of I-Gel development including an initial mannequin and cadaver studies, with a description of the I-Gel's use in clinical practice, indications and description of its use in the operating room, and use of the I-Gel in different surgical subspecialities including laparoscopic procedures.

R1,913 R1,468 Discovery Miles 14 680 Save R445 (23%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The majority of patients in need of organ transplants do not survive long enough for a suitable human organ to become available. Xenotransplantation, the transplant of animal organs into humans, has attracted substantial media attention. If, as appears likely, it proves possible to "humanize" animal organs and evade the problems of rejection, in the coming few years there will be a tremendous increase in this procedure, mostly using organs from animals specifically for their harvestable organs. This book will lay out the potential and promise of the technique, the history of organ transplantation, the technical problems and breakthroughs in overcoming immune rejection, and typing and humanizing donor organs for transplantation. The ethical question of growing animals specifically for organ harvest, and the substantial public health concern from the certainty that animal viruses will pass into humans with the donated organs, will be fully discussed. The authors are among the leaders in the field of Xenotransplantation.

R3,147 R2,820 Discovery Miles 28 200 Save R327 (10%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Artificial Intelligence Applications in Human Pathology deals with the latest topics in biomedical research and clinical cancer diagnostics. With chapters provided by true international experts in the field, this book gives real examples of the implementation of AI and machine learning in human pathology.Advances in machine learning and AI in general have propelled computational and general pathology research. Today, computer systems approach the diagnostic levels achieved by humans for certain well-defined tasks in pathology. At the same time, pathologists are faced with an increased workload both quantitatively (numbers of cases) and qualitatively (the amount of work per case, with increasing treatment options and the type of data delivered by pathologists also expected to become more fine-grained). AI will support and leverage mathematical tools and implement data-driven methods as a center for data interpretation in modern tissue diagnosis and pathology. Digital or computational pathology will also foster the training of future computational pathologists, those with both pathology and non-pathology backgrounds, who will eventually decide that AI-based pathology will serve as an indispensable hub for data-related research in a global health care system. Some of the specific topics explored within include an introduction to DL as applied to Pathology, Standardized Tissue Sampling for Automated Analysis, integrating Computational Pathology into Histopathology workflows. Readers will also find examples of specific techniques applied to specific diseases that will aid their research and treatments including but not limited to; Tissue Cartography for Colorectal Cancer, Ki-67 Measurements in Breast Cancer, and Light-Sheet Microscopy as applied to Virtual Histology. The key role for pathologists in tissue diagnostics will prevail and even expand through interdisciplinary work and the intuitive use of an advanced and interoperating (AI-supported) pathology workflow delivering novel and complex features that will serve the understanding of individual diseases and of course the patient.

Interfacing the IBM-PC to Medical Equipment - The Art of Serial Communication (Hardcover): Richard W. D. Nickalls, R.... Interfacing the IBM-PC to Medical Equipment - The Art of Serial Communication (Hardcover)
Richard W. D. Nickalls, R. Ramasubramanian
R4,783 Discovery Miles 47 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As computerisation in the medical environment has increased, so the advantages of storage and the computer analysis of data from various monitoring and measuring equipment has become well recognised. Most medical monitoring and measurement equipment now supports an RS-232 serial interface, allowing for direct computer access both in terms of data analysis and equipment control. This book describes the techniques used for interfacing a PC to a range of medical equipment used internationally in the areas of anaesthesia, intensive care, surgery, respiratory medicine and physiology. Part One addresses the serial interface, including the RS-232 standard, transmission of data and an introduction to serial-interface programming using Microsoft QuickBASIC. Part Two looks at electrical safety, the use of Kermit and data analysis. Part Three considers the practical aspects of interfacing a PC to a wide range of equipment, and includes example programs for collecting data and in some cases for controlling the equipment directly. This essential practical information constitutes a valuable resource for a very broad audience of PC and measurement equipment users in the medical field.

The Practice of Electrocardiography - A Problem-Solving Guide to Confident Interpretation (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the... The Practice of Electrocardiography - A Problem-Solving Guide to Confident Interpretation (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1994)
Thomas M. Blake
R1,634 Discovery Miles 16 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In The Practice of Electrocardiography, a master practitioner offers an organized approach to the art of EKG interpretation. Moving beyond the traditional approaches of many books that stress technical skill and pattern recognition, Dr. Blake shows how the four measurements needed to examine a tracing (orientation, duration, amplitude, and contour of each component) may be used with consistency and medical rigor for distinguishing normal and abnormal EKG patterns.
A unique worksheet guides the analytic process item by item and clarifies the logic of each stage of interpretation, in the same way that a dissection manual leads the student in an anatomy course. The result is a method for interpreting the electrocardiogram that reveals the anatomy and physiology behind each waveform and illuminates the gray areas between normal and abnormal.
The Practice of Electrocardiography provides a firm foundation in the diagnostic methods and clinical application of electrocardiography, as well as an entry into the literature through an outstanding bibliography. It will enable medical and nursing students to analyze the tracings they encounter in day-to-day practice with confidence and real understanding. Practicing clinicians will also find fresh insights here, and there are sections for technicians and their supervisors, as well as for administrators and others charged with assessing competence in the field.
After a lifetime of teaching and practicing EKG production and interpretation, after seeing more than a million EKG tracings over the years, Dr. Blake has distilled in The Practice of Electrocardiography the essence of his art and understanding for all those who must record, interpret, or judge tradings.

Compression for Clinicians - A Compass for Hearing Aid Fittings (Paperback, 3rd Revised edition): Theodore H. Venema Compression for Clinicians - A Compass for Hearing Aid Fittings (Paperback, 3rd Revised edition)
Theodore H. Venema
R3,123 Discovery Miles 31 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Compression for Clinicians: Considerations for Hearing Aid Fittings, Third Edition" explains many developments that have taken place in the world of hearing aid compression, fitting methods, and real ear measurement. Directional microphones and digital features of noise reduction, feedback reduction, and expansion are also covered. The text aims to make difficult concepts easier to understand and to explain in plain language many topics pertaining to compression. The third edition recognizes two distinct clinical populations of sensori-neural hearing loss; mild-to-moderate on the one hand, and more severe on the other. These two clinical populations are well served by a corresponding pair of compression types; wide dynamic range compression and output limiting compression. Another double distinction held throughout the text is the two-part task for all hearing aids; providing gain and also, increasing the signal-to-noise ratio. Gain is addressed by compression, while listening in noise is addressed by directional microphones and digital noise reduction.New to the Third Edition:*Includes new chapters on common clinical encounters (Chapter 1), real ear measurement (Chapter 5), and adaptive dynamic range optimization (Chapter 10)*Distinguishes between "sensory" and "neural" hearing loss and devotes a separate chapter to each of these types of sensori-neural hearing loss*Contains updated coverage of digital hearing aids, directional microphones, and digital noise reduction*Retains a strong focus on the historical development of compression from yesterday's analog hearing aids to digital hearing aids of today"Compression for Clinicians" is intended for those studying to become hearing health care professionals, including audiologists and hearing instrument practitioners. It is also intended for practicing clinicians who simply want to refresh their knowledge base concerning hearing loss and hearing aids. Clinically relevant and very thorough, it provides a relevant compass in the world of compression hearing aids.

General Practice is undergoing the most major series of changes since the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948. They concern both concepts of care and practical details of the way care is delivered. In spite of the hostility generated by the changes most of the broad general concepts have been accepted. The principle of patients having more choice is widely supported, the inclusion of preventive medicine and anticipatory care in the responsibilities of practice has few opponents, the introduction of audit as a way of improving performance has been generally welcomed. Even the idea of putting GPs in better financial management of patients and drug budgets has had supporters in principle. The antipathy has generally related to the method of introduction of these changes. One important concern has been the time requirements of the New Contract and the feeling that these will erode the real nature of our work: the close personal relationship with patients. If we improve the quality of our management this is less likely to happen. We shall be able to work within the New Contract and retain the quality of service we pro vide. If we improve the understanding of our staff of what we are trying to achieve we are more likely to reach the targets that we set whilst keeping people happy. vii This book sets out to explain the New Contract."

The current scarcity of expert systems where the reasoning is based on Bayesian probability theory may be due to misconceptions about probabilities found in the literature. As argued by Cheeseman (1985), these misconceptions have led to the attitude: "The Bayesian approach doesn't work - so here is a new scheme." Several of these expert systems based on ad hoc "probability" concepts have been successful in a number of ways, demonstrating the necessity of being able to handle uncertainty in medical expert systems. They also demonstrate the need for a theoretically sound handling of uncertainty. In Andersen et al. (1986) it was postulated that knowledge organized in a causal network can be used for a unified approach to the main tasks of a medical expert system: diagnosis, planning of tests and explanations. The present paper explores this postulate in a causal probabilistic network. It also provides a practical demonstration that the problems supposedly associated with probabilistic networks are either non-existent or that practical solutions can be found. This paper reports on the methods implemented in MUNIN* -an expert system for electromyography (EMG) (Andreassen et al. 1987). EMG is the diagnosis of muscle and nerve diseases through analysis of bioelectrical signals from muscle and nerve tissue. In Andreassen et al.

Biomaterials serve as synthetic or natural materials used to replace parts of living systems or to function contact with living tissue. Biomaterials are intended to interface with biological systems to evaluate, treat, augment or replace any tissue, organ or function of the body. A biomaterial is different from a biological material such as bone that is produced by a biological system. Artificial hips, vascular-stents, artificial peacemakers, and catheters are all made from different biomaterials and comprise different medical devices. This book presents new approaches to biomaterial development including multi-field bone remodelling, novel strategies for conferring antibacterial properties to bone cement, polyacrylonitrile-based biomaterials for enzyme immobilisation and functionalised magnetic nanoparticles for tissue engineering.
