Mechanics is quite obviously geometric, yet the traditional approach to the subject is based mainly on differential equations. Setting out to make mechanics both accessible and interesting for non-mathematicians, Richard Talman augments this approach with geometric methods such as differential geometry, differential forms, and tensor analysis to reveal qualitative aspects of the theory. For easy reference, the author treats Lagrangian, Hamiltonian, and Newtonian mechanics separately - exploring their geometric structure through vector fields, symplectic geometry, and gauge invariance respectively. This second, fully revised edition has been expanded to further emphasize the importance of the geometric approach. Starting from Hamilton's principle, the author shows, from a geometric perspective, how "all" of classical physics can be subsumed within classical mechanics. Having developed the formalism in the context of classical mechanics, the subjects of electrodynamics, relativistic strings and general relativity are treated as examples of classical mechanics. This modest unification of classical physics is intended to provide a background for the far more ambitious "grand unification" program of quantum field theory. The final chapters develop approximate methods for the analysis of mechanical systems. Here the emphasis is more on practical perturbative methods than on the canonical transformation formalism. "Geometric Mechanics" features numerous illustrative examples and assumes only basic knowledge of Lagrangian mechanics.
'A remarkably hopeful and useful book...The climate crisis leaves us no choice but to build a new world and as Sanderson makes clear, we are capable of making it a better one than the dirty and dangerous planet we’ve come to take for granted.' Bill McKibben, Observer book of the week We depend on a handful of metals and rare earths to power our phones and computers. Increasingly, we rely on them to power our cars and our homes. Whoever controls these finite commodities will become rich beyond imagining. Sanderson journeys to meet the characters, companies, and nations scrambling for the new resources, linking remote mines in the Congo and Chile’s Atacama Desert to giant Chinese battery factories, shadowy commodity traders, secretive billionaires, a new generation of scientists attempting to solve the dilemma of a ‘greener’ world.

Those who will benefit from this excellent text are business owners, CFOs, plant managers, plant engineers, and energy managers. You will learn how to distill what savings are possible and how you can quickly accomplish those savings from what you already know and can expect to walk away at the end of this book with confidence and a realistic plan of action for reducing your costs.
This book is a practical guide to finding and delivering energy savings opportunities in transport operations for professional energy managers and energy auditors. Globally, transport is one of the fastest growing energy consumers and emitters of greenhouse gases, predominantly CO₂. The transport sector is also changing quickly ("more change in the last 5 years than in the last 50" – Mary Barra, CEO General Motors ). After distance, unladen vehicle weight is the biggest driver of energy consumption in transport, hence this book is called the ‘light’ guide – tongue in cheek. Be warned transport is a huge and complex topic. This practical guide from the convener of EN16247-4:2014, the first European energy audit standard for transport, takes a pragmatic approach to delivering measurable energy and emissions reductions in transport operations. Lessons learnt from the author’s 17 years of experience in persuading operators to deliver measured energy savings in transport are interwoven with tools, tips and shortcuts. That will help energy managers and auditors deliver effective transport energy audits that identify opportunities, prompting action, measured savings and, most importantly, being invited back!

The central questions of this book are how technologies decline, how societies deal with technologies in decline, and how governance may be explicitly oriented towards parting with 'undesirable' technology. Surprisingly, these questions are fairly novel. Thus far, the dominant interest in historical, economic, sociological and political studies of technology has been to understand how novelty emerges, how innovation can open up new opportunities and how such processes may be supported. This innovation bias reflects how in the last centuries modern societies have embraced technology as a vehicle of progress. It is timely, however, to broaden the social study of technology and society: next to considering the rise of technologies, their fall should be addressed, too. Dealing with technologies in decline is an important challenge or our times, as socio-technical systems are increasingly part of the problems of climate change, biodiversity loss, social inequalities and geo-political tensions. This volume presents empirical studies of technologies in decline, as well as conceptual clarifications and theoretical deepening. Technologies in Decline presents an emerging research agenda for the study of technological decline, emphasising the need for a plurality of perspectives. Given that destabilisation and discontinuation are seen as a way to accelerate sustainability transitions, this book will be of interest to academics, students and policy makers researching and working in the areas of sustainability science and policy, economic geography, innovation studies, and science and technology studies.

Most photovoltaic (PV) installations utilise heavy conventional glass or polycarbonate panels, and even newly developed thin plastic or metal films for PV cell use may fracture during both construction and application. Textile fabrics, the most widespread flexible materials in everyday use, offer a solution to the need for lightweight, flexible solar PV generators. Solar Textiles: The Flexible Solution for Solar Power is about the incorporation and operation of solar cells on textile fabrics. The combination of textile manufacturing and solar PV cell technology opens up further avenues for both the textile and semiconductor industries. Thus, this book reflects the progressively increasing commercial interest in PV cell technology and the versatility that their integration in textiles provides. Discusses textiles as electrical substrates Explains the photovoltaic effect and associated parameters Offers special consideration of solar cells on textiles Compares fibres and fabrics and how to implement PV activity on a textile Describes manufacturing methods outside of semiconductor technology Includes applications open only to textiles This work is aimed at textile technologists, electronic engineers, solar technologists, civil engineers and designers in building fabrics and architecture.
