Applying a languaging perspective, this volume frames the teaching
and learning of literacy, literature, language, and the language
arts as social and linguistic actions that generate new questions
to make visible social, cultural, psychological, linguistic, and
educational processes. Chapter authors explore diverse aspects of a
languaging framework, the perspective of language as a series of
ongoing and evolving interactional social actions and processes
over time. Based on their research, the authors suggest directions
for addressing substantive engagement as well as the
marginalization, superficiality, and violence (symbolic and
otherwise) that characterize the educational experience of so many
students. Responding to the need to foster and support students'
intellectual, social, and affective worlds, this book showcases how
languaging relations among teachers and students can deepen
interactions and engagement with texts; enhance understandings of
agency, personhood, and power relations in order to transform
literacy, literature, and language arts classrooms; and improve the
lives of teachers and students in educational settings.

- a 50 million dollar collaborative effort between area business
and corporate interests, philanthropy, and the Dallas Independent
School District. Features include: an analysis of systemic reform

change management experts, university scholars, school leaders,
teachers, and educational researchers) involved in the improvement
of urban literacy education in a major school district; concise
reporting on the effects of long-term teacher development
programmes built upon scientific research; quantitative and
qualitative research data on the improvement of teacher performance
in literacy instruction gathered over a five-year period. systemic
reform efforts in urban settings; insights into the benefits of
principal training as part of creating effective school-wide
literacy programmes; and data showing that previously ineffective
teachers can become effective literacy educators through deep and
sustained professional development.
Learning sounds is fun with Tippie the elephant! Tippie learns sounds
was developed in collaboration with an occupational therapist. This
series includes early learning and developmental outcomes to support
phonemic awareness. Generalisation and consolidation of letter sounds,
letter formation as well as auditory and visual perception skills form
part of this unique approach. Tippie learns sounds includes hidden
curriculum skills and encourages incidental learning. A structured
approach to learning and recognising letters with associations is
supported by focusing on correct letter formation with a clear
beginning and end for each letter. Visual scanning for task completion
and early reading is encouraged with an emphasis on working from
left-to-right, top-to-bottom. Learning readiness is key to our
approach, emphasising fun, child-centred and age appropriate
multi-sensorial activities.
Learn to do with Tippie includes a number of practical activities for
children between the ages of 4 and 6. This fun, interactive series will
have your child drawing, colouring, cutting, sticking and learning as
they go. Learn to do was developed by a speech therapist and
occupational therapist and focuses on fine motor, language, conceptual
and perceptual skills that will help your child develop the
foundational skills needed for later academic learning and development.
Appropriate for those new to the topic and established scholars,
this holistic text examines the nexus of advocacy and
English-language teaching, beginning with theories of advocacy,
covering constraints and challenges in practice, and offering a
range of hands-on perspectives in different contexts and with
different populations. Bringing together wide-ranging and diverse
viewpoints in TESOL, this volume examines the role of advocacy
through a social justice lens in a range of contexts, including
K-12 classrooms and schools, adult and higher education settings,
families and communities, and teacher-education programs and
professional organizations. Advocacy in English Language Teaching
and Learning offers readers a deeper understanding of what advocacy
is and can be, and gives teacher candidates and educators the tools

their profession.
The 50 Fantastic Ideas series is packed full of fun, original,
skills-based activities for Early Years practitioners to use with
children aged 0-5. Each activity features step-by-step guidance, a
list of resources, and a detailed explanation of the skills
children will learn. Creative, simple, and highly effective, this
series is a must-have for every Early Years setting. Supporting
young children's language development has always been an important
part of high-quality Early Years practice. Competency in language
(written and spoken) is essential in ensuring children can access
learning across the whole curriculum and simultaneously supports
personal, social and emotional development. However, it is becoming
increasingly clear that many children need additional support to
meet age-related expectations in this area. 50 Fantastic Ideas for
Early Language Development presents a range of flexible and
adaptable ideas to help practitioners develop their practice in the
area of speaking, listening and communication. The author, Dr Mary
Scanlan, is a expert in Early Years education. She puts theory into
practice in this dip-in book by introducing accessible activities
that are underpinned by research and an understanding of best
practice. This book covers all areas of the EYFS, including the
needs of children with EAL or SEND.

This book deals with reading authentic English picture books in the
primary school EFL classroom in Germany. Questioning whether
teachers and researchers underestimate young learners' competences
in English as a foreign language, the author conducted a mixed
methods study that investigated Year 4 EFL learners' reading of six
different picture books. While focusing on the learners' reading
comprehension and reading strategies, the study also explored the
possible effects of regular reading on foreign language
development. The results of the study suggest a greater focus on
meaningful reading tasks in the primary school EFL classroom to
create a challenging, authentic and individualised learning
environment for young learners of English.
Utilizing experiences and expertise from English educators, young
adult literature authors, classroom teachers, and mental health
professionals, this book considers how secondary English Language
Arts can address school gun violence. Curated by field experts,
contributions to this volume pay special attention to how a
school's culture and climate affect how teachers and students
communicate around difficult topics that are embedded in the
curriculum, but not directly addressed. As the first book that
helps teachers and teacher educators to grapple with the topic of
school violence specifically in the English education classroom,
this book promotes young adult literature and writing activities
that address timely and unfortunately recurring events.
Offering diverse and wide-ranging perspectives on gender,
sexualities, and literacies, this volume examines the intersection
of these topics from preschool to adulthood. With a focus on
current events, race, and the complex role of identity, this text
starts with an overview of the current research on gender and
sexualities in literacies and interrogates them from a range of
multimodal contexts. Not restricted to any gender identity or age
group, these chapters provide a much-needed and original update to
the ways representations and performances of gender and sexualities
through literacy practices are viewed in educational and
sociocultural contexts. Scholars share their insights and
transformative visions that respect and embrace difference while
creating space for new and deeper understandings of contemporary
issues.
Creating Literacy Communities as Pathways to Student Success offers
a model for using literacy as a pathway for secondary students to
explore fields from which they are often systematically excluded.
In particular, this volume demonstrates how access for young Latina
students to STEM related fields can be bolstered through engagement
with mentors in writing and reading programs. Written for pre- and
in-service teachers, as well as scholars across disciplines, this
book aims to re-conceptualize the ways in which writing can best
serve ethnically and linguistically diverse students, especially
girls.

This book provides ways of thinking for preservice and new teachers
to transition from the theory behind curricular design to engaged
teaching and learning in the classroom. It offers a comprehensive
framework for the creation and implementation of one's own
authentic and effective ELA curriculum. In addition to strategies
for preservice teachers to develop their own pedagogies, lessons,
and teaching techniques, Costigan also demonstrates how to design
tools for teaching in the current testing- and standards-driven
context of the educational reform movement. Containing real-life
examples of reading and writing instruction, this book empowers
preservice teachers to translate the concepts of curriculum design
to actual ELA classroom practices that will engage students.
Kumon English Language Arts is a new program that is designed to strengthen reading and writing skills by teaching them together.
Alternating reading and writing activities will give your child a chance to learn how to be a great reader— and how to use what they know about reading to improve their writing, too! Children will work with information, narrative, and opinion texts, and they will have ample opportunity to be creative in their own writing. An answer key will provide sample responses to allow users to check their own work, or to review their work with an adult.
The series is launching with a Grade 6 and Grade 7 edition, with more titles to come.
