Utilizing experiences and expertise from English educators, young
adult literature authors, classroom teachers, and mental health
professionals, this book considers how secondary English Language
Arts can address school gun violence. Curated by field experts,
contributions to this volume pay special attention to how a
school's culture and climate affect how teachers and students
communicate around difficult topics that are embedded in the
curriculum, but not directly addressed. As the first book that
helps teachers and teacher educators to grapple with the topic of
school violence specifically in the English education classroom,
this book promotes young adult literature and writing activities
that address timely and unfortunately recurring events.

The 50 Fantastic Ideas series is packed full of fun, original,
skills-based activities for Early Years practitioners to use with
children aged 0-5. Each activity features step-by-step guidance, a
list of resources, and a detailed explanation of the skills
children will learn. Creative, simple, and highly effective, this
series is a must-have for every Early Years setting. Supporting
young children's language development has always been an important
part of high-quality Early Years practice. Competency in language
(written and spoken) is essential in ensuring children can access
learning across the whole curriculum and simultaneously supports
personal, social and emotional development. However, it is becoming
increasingly clear that many children need additional support to
meet age-related expectations in this area. 50 Fantastic Ideas for
Early Language Development presents a range of flexible and
adaptable ideas to help practitioners develop their practice in the
area of speaking, listening and communication. The author, Dr Mary
Scanlan, is a expert in Early Years education. She puts theory into
practice in this dip-in book by introducing accessible activities
that are underpinned by research and an understanding of best
practice. This book covers all areas of the EYFS, including the
needs of children with EAL or SEND.
Creating Literacy Communities as Pathways to Student Success offers
a model for using literacy as a pathway for secondary students to
explore fields from which they are often systematically excluded.
In particular, this volume demonstrates how access for young Latina
students to STEM related fields can be bolstered through engagement
with mentors in writing and reading programs. Written for pre- and
in-service teachers, as well as scholars across disciplines, this
book aims to re-conceptualize the ways in which writing can best
serve ethnically and linguistically diverse students, especially
girls.

This book deals with reading authentic English picture books in the
primary school EFL classroom in Germany. Questioning whether
teachers and researchers underestimate young learners' competences
in English as a foreign language, the author conducted a mixed
methods study that investigated Year 4 EFL learners' reading of six
different picture books. While focusing on the learners' reading
comprehension and reading strategies, the study also explored the
possible effects of regular reading on foreign language
development. The results of the study suggest a greater focus on
meaningful reading tasks in the primary school EFL classroom to
create a challenging, authentic and individualised learning
environment for young learners of English.

The Jolly Phonics Readers Level 1 Our World are fully decodable
books for new readers. They are the second set of readers within
the Our World series that was first launched in 2020 as part of the
Jolly Phonics refresh. They have been written with a carefully
controlled vocabulary, and are specifically designed for students
who are learning to read and write with Jolly Phonics. * The text
in these Red Level Books (first level) uses only decodable regular
words (words that are made up from the 42 letter sounds taught in
the first stage of Jolly Phonics) and a small number of 'tricky'
words (frequently used words that are not fully decodable at this
stage). * All of the tricky words and letter sounds used in this
book are shown on the front inside cover. These can be used as a
quick practice activity before starting the book. * Faint type is
used for silent letters, like the in lamb. * Comprehension
questions and discussion topics are included at the end of the
book. These ensure that students are not only able to read the
text, but also get meaning from it.

English language! It contains three sections: 'The Story of
English', 'Inside Words' and 'Creating Language'. Each one is
packed with colourful, engaging questions and activities to get

Published in 1978, this is a concise and practical guide to the use
of linguistic theory and analytical techniques in English language
teaching at secondary and tertiary levels of education. Much has
been written in this area in the past, but previous emphasis has
most often been theoretical. This book is concerned with the
realities of teaching, and each technique recommended is explained
by reference to actual examples of students' writing and speech.
The underlying theory is discussed only when this serves to clarify
practice. John Keen demonstrates how students' existing grasp of
the uses and processes of English can provide a reliable base from
which to develop their language skills in a meaningful and
effective way. His own experience has convinced him that the
sympathetic use of linguistic insights can help in teaching the
conventions of spelling and grammar, developing students'
sensitivity to meaning in language and enabling them to use
language resourcefully in a variety of contexts - including writing
coherently and at length on particular topics. The Bullock Report
recommended that language study should be part of every teacher's
training. This book indicates some directions that such a language
study might take.
This fantastic range of fiction for Shared, Guided and Independent
reading gives you stories your children will love to read over and
over again. Gaelic and Scottish teaching support also accompanies
this reading series.
This book contains three full sets of practice papers for Key Stage

pull-out Reading Booklet) and a Shakespeare Paper (based on Romeo
and Juliet or The Tempest). A full mark scheme is included for
every test, so it's easy for students to check their progress and
learn from any mistakes.
Originally published in 2000. This book provides insights,
practical suggestions and clear-cut strategies for integrating
media across the K-12 curriculum. This contribution to teaching and
curriculum design uses students' own media experiences or media
vignettes from students' lives to enter teaching and learning. It
provides a road map for teachers longing to reflect and take
seriously the knowledge students bring to school from their homes
and communities, and to draw upon this background to develop
students' critical thinking, viewing and reading of written texts,
visuals, and other electronic images and messages.

'The authors of this book offer numerous strategies that not only
help our students organise and develop their thoughts and learning
but also help us, the busy teachers, to plan ahead and ensure that
our students in pramry school are well equipped to be life-long
learners in this ever chnaging technological twenty--first
century....Overall, this book is valuable, comprehensive guide to
developing the literacy skills of all learners. There are over 100
planning models, examples and checklists included and though I
recommend it as book worth reading and studying from beginning to
end, it is a book that the busy teacher can dip into for valuable
ideas when planning a literacy lesson. Because this book is
inspirational, yet so practical, I certainly will keep it close at

teachers are accountable for accelerating literacy learning and
achievement for learners at all stages of literacy development.

growth, and life-long learning. With a focus on research-based and
differentiated strategies, noted authors Gayle Gregory and Lin
Kuzmich offer teachers step-by-step guides to: - Assessing diverse
learners for literacy skills, competencies, learning styles, and
learning gaps - Implementing a broad array of strategies to move
all students to the next stage in their literacy learning -
Creating lessons and activities that address all four literacy
competencies in the differentiated classroom. With more than 100
planning models, examples and checklists included, this book is the
ideal resource for all primary teachers who want to close the

Synthesizing a range of studies on morphological processing from
the past 30 years, this edited collection presents the current
state of knowledge on morphological processing and defines
classroom practices to help students conceptualise the role of
morphology in reading, spelling, and vocabulary development.
Research has increasingly indicated the importance of morphological
tasks in relation to reading, spelling, and vocabulary acquisition
in the classroom. Chapter authors present the theoretical
considerations guiding morphological processing research to date,
address the use of morphology with reference to different
populations of learners, and propose effective and innovative
instructional strategies for integrating morphology in the
classroom.
