Steven Schneider's newly revised second edition of How Parents Can Help Kids Improve Test Scores: Taking the Stakes Out of Literacy Testing highlights the most recent literacy initiatives in America since the federal act of No Child Left Behind. His book has been redesigned to further help teachers and parents navigate through the maze of newly developed state standardized testing in reading and writing, so students may be able to achieve greater success. By using the proactive methods shown in this book and by following easily understood step-by-step instructions, parents and teachers can begin to help their children take the first steps down the road to literacy and to understanding the Common Core language arts subjects. This book features time-tested activities, suggestions, and a plethora of practical advice to assist teachers and parents in raising children's scores on standardized state reading tests. By utilizing the highly prescriptive "Pinpoint Reading Program," newly revised in this second edition, parents and teachers will gain new insights into the format, style, and objectives of these tests and how they can assist children to score higher. Most importantly, this book instills the confidence that children need to achieve the success that they rightfully deserve and for which their parents and teachers have come to expect.

In the World Library of Educationalists series, international scholars themselves compile career-long collections of what they judge to be their finest pieces-extracts from books, key articles, salient research findings, major theoretical and/or practical contributions-so the world can read them in a single manageable volume. Readers thus are able to follow the themes and strands of their work and see their contribution to the development of a field, as well as the development of the field itself. Contributors to the series include: Michael Apple, James A. Banks, Joel Spring, William F. Pinar, Stephen J. Ball, Elliot Eisner, Howard Gardner, John Gilbert, Ivor F. Goodson, and Peter Jarvis. In this volume, Courtney B. Cazden, renowned educational sociolinguist, brings together a selection of her seminal work, organized around three themes: development of individual communicative competence in both oral and written language and discourse; classroom interaction in learning and teaching; and social justice/educational equity issues in wider contexts beyond the classroom. Since the 1970s, Cazden has been a key figure in the ethnography of schooling, focusing on children's linguistic development (both oral and written) and the functions of language in formal education, primarily but not exclusively in the United States. Combining her experiences as a former primary schoolteacher with the insight and methodological rigor of a trained ethnographer and linguist, Cazden helped to establish ethnography and discourse analysis as central methodologies for analyzing classroom interaction. This capstone volume highlights her major contributions to the field.
Challenging the assumption that access to technology is pervasive and globally balanced, this book explores the real and potential limitations placed on young people's literacy education by their limited access to technology and digital resources. Drawing on research studies from around the globe, Stories from Inequity to Justice in Literacy Education identifies social, economic, racial, political and geographical factors which can limit populations' access to technology, and outlines the negative impact this can have on literacy attainment. Reflecting macro, meso and micro inequities, chapters highlight complex issues surrounding the productive use of technology and the mobilization of multimodal texts for academic performance and illustrate how digital divides might be remedied to resolve inequities in learning environments and beyond. Contesting the digital divides which are implicitly embedded in aspects of everyday life and learning, this text will be of great interest to researchers and post-graduate academics in the field of literacy education.
Published in 1978, this is a concise and practical guide to the use of linguistic theory and analytical techniques in English language teaching at secondary and tertiary levels of education. Much has been written in this area in the past, but previous emphasis has most often been theoretical. This book is concerned with the realities of teaching, and each technique recommended is explained by reference to actual examples of students' writing and speech. The underlying theory is discussed only when this serves to clarify practice. John Keen demonstrates how students' existing grasp of the uses and processes of English can provide a reliable base from which to develop their language skills in a meaningful and effective way. His own experience has convinced him that the sympathetic use of linguistic insights can help in teaching the conventions of spelling and grammar, developing students' sensitivity to meaning in language and enabling them to use language resourcefully in a variety of contexts - including writing coherently and at length on particular topics. The Bullock Report recommended that language study should be part of every teacher's training. This book indicates some directions that such a language study might take.

The chapters in this collection explore the implementation of social justice pedagogies with preservice teachers by members of the Commission on Social Justice in Teacher Education; a group of teacher educators from across the country whose primary goal is to prepare teachers to use socially just models to reach all groups of students and to create a more equitable educational system. In this collection, each member/author presents a critical model of social justice teaching by considering the ways in which gender, race, class, and other intersections function in the classroom. Individually, authors enact critical models by interrogating inequitable systems of oppression in their own professional and pedagogical environments. Collectively, the chapters ask what thoughtful, participatory social justice pedagogy looks like in multidimensional pedagogical spaces. At all levels, this collection explores the rewards and challenges of social justice pedagogy within and outside of preservice teacher preparation programs influenced by a constantly shifting political landscape. Ultimately, this collection seeks to discover how ideas of social justice are conceptualized and understood by English educators and K-12 teachers. As a possible approach to this question, the chapters in this collection support ELATE-SJ's paradigm for advocacy. This paradigm includes three areas of enaction: research, scholarship, and action. Within these areas, members of the commission (authors) seek to better understand how preservice ELA teachers see themselves and others, to develop flexible teaching models grounded in social justice pedagogy (SJP), and to delineate opportunities for transformation, growth, and change in and through our profession.

This book tracks the development of Exploratory Practice since the early 1990s as an original form of practitioner research in the field of English language teaching. Drawing on case studies, vignettes and narratives from teachers and learners around the world as they experienced Exploratory Practice in their different contexts, Hanks examines the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of the Exploratory Practice framework and asks what the principles really mean in practice. For language professionals considering investigating their classrooms and their teaching/learning practices rigorously and thoughtfully, this book breaks new ground, arguing for a fresh perspective: (exploratory) practice-as-research. Judith Hanks is Lecturer in TESOL at the University of Leeds, UK. Her work bridges specialist areas in language teacher education, intercultural communication, TESOL and EAP.
This book focuses on arts-based classroom practices that can be used to support English Language Learners. Recognizing that all children learn differently, but that the needs of children learning a new language are particularly unique, each chapter offers innovative in which arts-based methods can support learning across content areas. This book also recognizes the intersectionality of language and socio-economic status that exists for many ELLs. Framing knowledge of two languages as an asset for children who otherwise may come from low resource contexts is an important feature of these chapters. This edited book offers resources and practical suggestions from teachers who have successfully integrated the arts into their curriculum. It is a useful resource for classroom teachers and other practioners who work with ELL learners from K-12. |
