Comprehension skills are at the heart of 11+ and Common Entrance
exams, such as those set by the Centre for Evaluation and
Monitoring (CEM, University of Cambridge), the Independent Schools
Examinations Board (ISEB) and by the schools themselves. The
comprehension section of these exams typically contains a passage
and a variety of questions that test understanding, inference
ability, logical reasoning, grammar, vocabulary and reading
techniques. This book contains four exams, each with a passage of
contemporary literature, awarding 30 marks and designed to be
completed in 30 minutes. The questions in this book are
representative of the range of different question styles found in a
typical standard comprehension exam paper. Full explanations on how
to achieve the highest marks per question are included. Extensively
road-tested by ElevenPlusExams, all 11+ Essentials tests are
perfect for use in the classroom and at home.
A dyslexia-friendly font is used throughout the workbooks. It is extremely quick and easy for teachers to implement in their classroom or to assign as homework. Questions consolidate reading and comprehension and allow teachers to check that children actually read and comprehend the texts. It is easy for children to use independently, allowing them to take control of their reading journey, or with a parent’s assistance.
Features
- Each year level has two workbooks containing 15 weeks of texts each (4 texts per week). Part A is a physical workbook (60 texts) and Part B is available online (additional 60 texts).
- Children are encouraged to read one text each day at home (Monday to Thursday). This equates to 120 texts per year level.
- A number of different text types are included to provide variety and interest.
- Each text has an accompanying worksheet with six questions for children to complete so teachers and parents can monitor reading success.
- Answers are provided (online) for teachers and parents to check progress, or for children to self-mark.
Each book contains 32 weeks of work, arranged into four units. Seven weeks of each unit begin with a new ‘Skill Focus’, addressing a key language concept. Each day, the first two questions will reinforce and consolidate this language concept. The rest of the daily questions will cover common skills of English.

A good vocabulary and knowledge of spelling is key to success in
all 11 plus and Common Entrance exams, particularly those set by
Durham University's Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) and
Granada Learning (GL). Cloze tests are passages with missing words
or letters which require the child to recognise and select the
answer from a set of several options, or to complete the word with
the correct spelling. They are designed to test a child's
vocabulary and spelling. This book covers the three main question
styles of cloze tests: Word Bank, Multiple Choice and Partial
Words. There are six tests in each question style, each containing
around 25 questions. The online Peer-Compare system helps identify
areas for improvement and gauge progress relative to other children
taking the same tests. For further information about how this
system works, see the inside front cover. Extensively road-tested
