The Building of Southampton Docks (Paperback): Dave Marden The Building of Southampton Docks (Paperback)
Dave Marden
R429 R390 Discovery Miles 3 900 Save R39 (9%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Remarkable overview of the history of the Southampton Docks, from it's earliest to most recent developments, to explore what has made it the enormous industrial estate it is today. It is aided by fascinating early maps and photographs to illustrate the magnitude of the changes made to the docks through time. To most Southampton citizens, and indeed many visitors, the view of the Docks on its doorstep is a familiar sight witnessed daily without much of a second thought - as if it has always been there. Countless books have been written about the docks and many have referred to various stages of its development, but few have told the fuller story of its evolution from a couple of small basins clawed from the mud to the enormous industrial estate it is today. This book, with the aid of early maps and photographs, explores and illustrates the various stages of the docks growth and progress under an array of owners over the passage of time. It explores everything from how it was built from the earliest days of its commencement under the ownership of the Southampton Dock Company, to its final expansion to Redbridge in 1996 under private owners Associated British Ports, bringing the story up to date.

Managing Maritime Safety (Paperback): Helle Oltedal, Margareta Lutzhoeft Managing Maritime Safety (Paperback)
Helle Oltedal, Margareta Lutzhoeft
R1,485 Discovery Miles 14 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Shipping is a pillar of global trade, with 90 per cent of the world's trade in goods and raw materials carried by ship. Despite the economic benefits this delivers, maritime operations can be dangerous, and when accidents occur the consequences are serious. Consequential outcomes from hazards at sea include serious injury, death, loss of cargo and destruction of the marine environment. Managing Maritime Safety will give you a thorough understanding of contemporary maritime safety and its management. It provides varying viewpoints on traditional safety topics in conjunction with critical discussions of the international safety management code and its application. The book also offers new perspectives on maritime safety such as ship and equipment design for safety and the relevance of safety management systems, in particular the application of the International Safety Management code to remote controlled or autonomous ships. The authors all work in the maritime industry, as practitioners, in education, research, government and classification. The combination of wide-ranging and extensive experience provides an unprecedented span of views with a strong connection to the real issues in the maritime domain. This book sets out to provide much needed consolidated knowledge for university level students on maritime safety management, incorporating theoretical, historical, research, operational and design perspectives.

Chung-Yee Lee, Qiang Meng
R5,951 Discovery Miles 59 510 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is focused on the impact of ocean transport logistics on global supply chains. It is the first book solely dedicated to the topic, linking the interaction of parties along this chain, including shippers, terminal operators and line carriers. While ocean container transport logistics has been greatly studied, there are many important issues that have yet to receive the attention they deserve. The editors and contributing authors of Ocean Container Transport Logistics: Making Global Supply Chain Effective seek to address these topics and shed new light on the subject. The book is divided into three parts. Part I examines the innovation, trends, competition and business model of container terminal operations. In Part II, the book looks at how tactical and operational management is used in shipping liners. The chapters cover topics such as empty container repositioning, slow steaming, routing, network design and disruption management. Finally Part III explores at shippers and global supply chain management, with chapters on transportation service procurement, hinterland transportation, green corridors, as well as competition and co-operation in maritime logistics operations. The eighteen chapters of the book all highlight the immediate effect of ocean transport logistics on global supply chain.

Tom McCluskie
R435 R396 Discovery Miles 3 960 Save R39 (9%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Harland and Wolff, once acknowledged as the greatest and best-known shipbuilding company in the world, for many years enjoyed a mighty eminence before a gradual descent into near obscurity. This illustrated book, told from the unique perspective of someone who was there at the time, chronicles the history of the organisation from its creation to the present day, from its halcyon days to its present incarnation. Today, the company is no longer involved in shipbuilding, maintaining only a small ship repair and engineering facility and occupying a fraction of its previously vast complex. At its peak Harland and Wolff directly employed over 45,000 people, with even more in its subsidiary companies. Well-known Harland and Wolff former employee Tom McCluskie, who was a technical consultant to James Cameron on the movie Titanic, sheds light on many little-known facts about the business, delves into the human interest stories, and recounts both the mighty zenith and ignominious demise of this great enterprise.

Port Economics (Paperback, 2nd edition): Wayne K. Talley Port Economics (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Wayne K. Talley
R2,104 Discovery Miles 21 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Port Economics is the study of the economic decisions (and their consequences) of the users and providers of port services. A port works as an "engine" for economic development. This book provides a detailed discussion of port freight service users, such as freight water and land carriers, that have their ships and vehicles serviced and their cargoes unloaded by ports, as well as passenger services such as ferry carriers which are serviced by ferry passenger ports. This text continues to enhance our understanding of port economics by exploring the economic theories, supply and demand curves, and the actual and opportunity costs relating to the carriers, shippers and passengers who use ports. This new edition has been updated throughout. This includes: An expanded discussion of container, break-bulk, dry-bulk, liquid-bulk and neo-bulk ports; An introduction of port service chains, hinterland transport chains, maritime transport chains and port multi-service congestion; A discussion of seaborne trade, dry ports, port centrality and connectivity and free trade zones. This updated and comprehensive introduction to port economics will be of benefit to students and researchers in their study of port economics and management. It is also of great importance to professionals who manage and operate ports as well as freight and passenger carriers.

Empire on the Hudson - Entrepreneurial Vision and Political Power at the Port of New York Authority (Paperback, Revised):... Empire on the Hudson - Entrepreneurial Vision and Political Power at the Port of New York Authority (Paperback, Revised)
Jameson W Doig
R1,503 Discovery Miles 15 030 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Revered and reviled in almost equal amounts since its inception, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has been responsible for creating and maintaining much of New York and New Jersey's transportation infrastructure -- the things that make the region work. Doig traces the evolution of the Port Authority from the battles leading to its creation in 1921 through its conflicts with the railroads and its expansion to build bridges and tunnels for motor vehicles. Chronicling the adroit maneuvers that led the Port Authority to take control of the region's airports and seaport operations, build the largest bus terminal in the nation, and construct the World Trade Center, Doig reveals the rise to power of one of the world's largest specialized regional governments.

This definitive history of the Port Authority underscores the role of several key players -- Austin Tobin, the obscure lawyer who became Executive Director and a true "power broker" in the bi-state region, Julius Henry Cohen, general counsel of the Port Authority for its first twenty years, and Othmar H. Ammann, the Swiss engineer responsible for the George Washington Bridge, the Bayonne and Goethels bridges, the Outerbridge Crossing, and the Lincoln Tunnel.

Today, with public works projects stalled by community opposition in almost every village and city, the story of how the Port Authority managed to create an empire on the Hudson offers lessons for citizens and politicians everywhere.

Arab Seafaring - In the Indian Ocean in Ancient and Early Medieval Times - Expanded Edition (Paperback, Revised edition):... Arab Seafaring - In the Indian Ocean in Ancient and Early Medieval Times - Expanded Edition (Paperback, Revised edition)
George F. Hourani
R1,011 Discovery Miles 10 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this classic work George Hourani deals with the history of the sea trade of the Arabs in the Indian Ocean from its obscure origins many centuries before Christ to the time of its full extension to China and East Africa in the ninth and tenth centuries. The book comprises a brief but masterly historical account that has never been superseded. The author gives attention not only to geography, meteorology, and the details of travel, but also to the ships themselves, including a discussion of the origin of stitched planking and of the lateen fore-and-aft sails. Piracy in the Indian Ocean, day-to-day life at sea, the establishment of ancient lighthouses and the production of early maritime guides, handbooks, and port directories are all described in fascinating detail. "Arab Seafaring" will appeal to anyone interested in Arab life or the history of navigation. For this expanded edition, John Carswell has added a new introduction, a bibliography, and notes that add material from recent archaeological research.

Gelina Harlaftis
R3,108 Discovery Miles 31 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Shipping has been the international business par excellence in many national economies, one that preceded trends in other, more highly visible sectors of international economic activity. Nevertheless, in both business or economic history, shipping has remained relatively overlooked. That gap is filled by this exploration of the evolution of European shipping through the study of two Greek shipping firms. They provide a prime example of the regional European maritime businesses that evolved to serve Europe's international trade and, eventually, the global economy. By the end of the twentieth century, Greeks owned more ships than any other nationality. The story of the Vagliano brothers traces the transformation of Greek shipping from local shipping and trading to international shipping and ship management, while the case of Aristotle Onassis reveals how international shipping was transformed into a global business.

Shipowners of Cardiff - A Class by Themselves (Hardcover, New): David Jenkins Shipowners of Cardiff - A Class by Themselves (Hardcover, New)
David Jenkins
R283 R193 Discovery Miles 1 930 Save R90 (32%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From 1875 to the present day, the Cardiff and Bristol Channel Incorporated Shipowners' Association has been the representative body for shipowners in Cardiff and other Bristol Channel ports. This study looks at some of the most representative periods in its history: the reaction of the Association to the proposal to build new docks in Barry in the 1880s, the Seaman's Strike in 1911, and the schism which split the Association in 1912-14. David Jenkins also reveals that a barrage across the estuary of the rivers Taff and Ely was first proposed as early as 1920. Nothing came of that proposal, but in 1929 a similar scheme was once more under consideration, comprising a dam with two locks across the tidal channel, between Penarth Head and Queen Alexandra lock.

Liner Shipping Economics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1987): Jan Jansson Liner Shipping Economics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1987)
Jan Jansson
R1,927 R1,317 Discovery Miles 13 170 Save R610 (32%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The importance of international liner shipping needs little emphasizing. A large majority of international trade moves by sea, and the liner shipping share in total freight revenue exceeds one-half. Notwithstanding, people in general know surprisingly little about the basic facts of the liner shipping industry, and, in particular, about the economics ofliner shipping. Perhaps because it is an international industry, where shipping lines flying many different flags participate, it has tended to fall in between national accounts of domestic industries. Even transport economists have, generally speaking, treated liner shipping rather 'stepmotherly'; besides the work of Bennathan and Walters (1969), a relatively small group of specialized maritime economists, including A. Stromme-Svendsen, T. Thorburn, S. Sturmey, R. Goss, and B. M. Deakin, have in the post-war period made important contributions to the subject, but so far no coherent and reasonably comprehensive treatise of liner shipping economics has appeared. The first purpose of the present volume is therefore obvious: to provide just that. The book is divided in three parts: Part I The liner shipping industry; Part II Liner service optimization; Part III Economic evaluation of the conference system. Needless to say, all three parts concur to fulfill the first purpose of providing a complete book of liner shipping economics. In Part II a more or less separate, second, purpose has been to develop analytical tools for liner service optimization. Thereby we use different approaches.

Maritime Transport - Shipping Logistics and Operations (Paperback): Ulla Tapaninen Maritime Transport - Shipping Logistics and Operations (Paperback)
Ulla Tapaninen; Translated by Joel Andelin

Maritime transport is the transport of people or goods by water. It is the backbone of world trade and globalization. Twenty-four hours a day and all year round, ships carry cargoes to all corners of the globe. Maritime Transport focuses on the operational side of this important industry, covering many topics such as sea traffic currents, passenger transport, short sea shipping and dangerous cargoes. Parts one and two of Maritime Transport present the concepts, theory and background information, then part three presents more complex and deeper issues such as the maritime transportation of the future. It covers topics such as intelligent shipping, data exchange at sea and maritime security. In addition, the book includes fascinating case studies and examples, such as maritime transport in the Baltic sea, ship strategies in Norway and Greece and the benefits of slow steaming. At the end of each chapter there are questions that will help students to gain a deeper understanding of the many topics covered.
