The Illustrated Boat Dictionary in 9 Languages is a first -
annotated illustrations arranged by topic allow quick communication
when something goes wrong abroad. Centred around clear, full
colour, annotated diagrams in each subject area, the dictionary
makes it easy and convenient to translate between nine languages
(English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, Danish,
Portuguese and Greek). The diagrams can easily be used to show
someone what is meant (or what is broken!) without having to worry
about the language barrier. And it also facilitates learning new
words in each language with this helpful visual reference. From
general terms such as 'port' and 'starboard' to technical words
relating to engine and rigging repair and maintenance, The
Illustrated Boat Dictionary in 9 Languages is amazingly
comprehensive, and even includes supplementary terms for many
topics even when they don't feature in the illustrations. Topics
include: sailing terms, parts of a boat, boat maintenance and
repair, navigation, weather, seamanship, requesting help, medical
emergencies, safety equipment, numbers and time.
Libby Riddles wanted an adventure. At the age of 16 she left home
for the snowy frontiers of Alaska, the Last Frontier. There her
love of animals drew her to the sport of sled dog racing. When she
entered the Iditarod, the famous marathon from Anchorage to Nome,
she was just another Iditarod Nobody. Twelve hundred miles later,
having conquered blizzards, extreme cold, and exhaustion, she and
her dogs crossed the final stretch of sea ice, miles ahead of the
nearest competitor...and suddenly she realised: I will be the first
woman to win the Iditarod. This is the story of a courageous woman
and her heroic dogs. This is the story of Libby Riddles's
adventure.

Helen J Rolfe “I absolutely love the Cornish Midwife series,
especially being an aspiring midwife from Cornwall. Despite being
fiction, these books never fail to motivate me to carry on studying
when things get tough and really become The Cornish Midwife
myself.” Tegan from Reading with Tegs (book blogger and trainee
midwife) “I get so absorbed in the books from the Cornish Midwife
series, I can’t put them down. The characters are like my
colleagues, a tight group of people who love the job they do. The
stories are truly captivating and make me feel like I am working
alongside the characters, as the series mirrors my working life as
a Midwifery Care Assistant so well.” Sandra Twyman, Midwifery
Care Assistant and avid reader
This is a unique, practical, hands-on guide to boat manoeuvring -
ideal for cockpit use or as an aide-memoire.
Manoeuvring a yacht under engine at close quarters in a marina
close to other (expensive ) boats can be a daunting prospect for
the inexperienced skipper - but it has to be done in order to take
your boat off a pontoon to go sailing, and to berth her after a day
on the water. Throw in fast flowing tides, and unpredictable wind
which might blow from the bow or beam or stern, and the exercise
becomes even more of a lottery - even for the experienced boat
handler.
Here at last is a well organized visual guide to coping in every
possible combination of wind and tide situation. Laid out in a very
clear way, with one manoeuvre per page and in a handy wiro format
for use when at the helm, this is the ideal teach yourself guide,
and the perfect on-board aide memoire. It will be a godsend to
every nervous helmsman, and a good talking point for crew
One clear morning in May, Nick Thorpe left his Edinburgh flat,
ducked off the commuter route and hitched a ride aboard a little
white canal boat, heading west towards the sea. It was the first
mutinous step in a delightful boat-hopping odyssey that would take
him 2500 miles through Scotland's canals, lochs and coastal waters,
from the industrial Clyde to the scattered islands of Viking
Shetland. Writing with characteristic humour and candour, the
award-winning author of EIGHT MEN AND A DUCK plots a curiously
existential voyage, inspired by those who have left the warm hearth
for the promise of a stretched horizon. Whether rowing a coracle
with a chapter of monks, scanning for the elusive Nessie, hitting
the rocks with Captain Calamity or clinging to the rigging of a
tall ship, Thorpe weaves a narrative that is by turns funny and
poignant - a nautical pilgrimage for any who have ever been tempted
to try a new path just to see where it might take them. Part
travelogue, part memoir, ADRIFT IN CALEDONIA is a unique and
affectionate portrait of a sea-fringed nation - and of the
drifter's quest to belong.
The third in a series of Adlard Coles highly practical, hands on,
step-by-step photographic manuals, "Replacing Your Boat's
Electrical System" fills a gap in the market for the DIY boat
builder and repairer, and for owners of older second-hand boats.
The electrical system on a boat is crucial for the operation of all
manner of useful as well as critical equipment, yet a simple
failure or weakness can render these systems inoperable. In older
boats fatigued or damaged wiring can be problematical or even
terminal, so Mike Westin shows ow to replace a boat's electrical
system to ensure fault-free service.This is a visual, hand-holding
guide, concentrating on the all-important details as it explains
each procedure rather than focussing on the theory (which is
relegated to an appendix, for those who wish to go further).
No matter what anyone tells you, boat cooking IS different from
cooking ashore. The space is smaller, there's no grocery store 5
minutes away, you have fewer prepared foods and electric
appliances, and food storage is much different.
Despite cruising different oceans, we--Jan and Carolyn--both
faced the same challenges: eating well while having time to enjoy
all the other great aspects of cruising. We love to snorkel, swim,
kayak, explore--and just sit and admire the view.
We learned with the cookbooks we both had aboard, and wished for
information that wasn't available--like when Jan ended up with a
frozen chicken complete with head and feet and no instructions on
how to cut it up.
When we couldn't get foods such as sour cream, English muffins,
spaghetti sauce or yogurt, we adapted recipes to make our own.
Other times, we experimented with substituting ingredients--maybe
the result wasn't identical, but it was still tasty. We ended up
with over 150 substitutions and dozens of "make it yourself"
options. As we traded recipes and knowledge with each other, we
realized we were compiling information that became "The Boat Galley
Cookbook"
800+ recipes made from readily-obtainable ingredients with hand
utensils, including numerous choices to suit every taste: not just
one cake but 20, 16 ways to prepare fish, 10 regional barbeque
sauces, and so on. Step-by-step directions to give even "non-cooks"
the confidence they can turn out tasty meals without prepared
foods. Detailed instructions on unfamiliar things like making
yogurt and bread, grilling virtually every food imaginable,
preparing and cooking freshly-caught fish and seafood, cutting up
and boning meat, cooking in a Thermos and baking on the stove top,
as well as lots of tips on how to do things more easily in a tiny,
moving kitchen. All this in an easy-to-navigate format including
side tabs on the Contents to help you find your way and extensive
cross reference lists at the end of each chapter. Quick Reference
Lists provide idea starters: suggestions of included recipes for
such categories as Mexican, Asian, and Potluck.
"The Boat Galley Cookbook" is designed to help you every step of
the way. We hope it becomes a trusted reference on your boat, and a
source of many enjoyable meals.
