Much has been written about children's literature as a genre; but very little material exists on how to use it in diverse South African classrooms where teachers prepare young learners in literacy skills. Introducing Children's Literature equips the prospective teacher with a strong theoretical introduction to the genre and details how children can be encouraged to become enthusiastic readers. This books also provides insight into the developmental stages of a child; the history of South African literature, with particular reference to the oral tradition; the role of the adult in establishing a reading culture; practicalities of introducing stories and literature to children in different phases from diverse contexts; the use of illustrations and technology to enhance other literacies; techniques of storytelling and selecting appropriate texts; the influence of the hidden curriculum in terms of moral development, stereotyping, sanitising and representation. The authors collectively have decades of experience in teacher education, teaching at the chalkface and raising their own children to enjoy reading. Many practical suggestions for using children's literature in the classroom makes this book a necessity for teachers, student teachers and parents.

A few days later, an exhausted Simon staggered into base camp to tell their non-climbing companion that Joe was dead. For three days he wrestled with guilt as they prepared to return home. Then a cry in the night took them out, where they found Joe, badly injured, crawling through the snowstorm. Far from causing Joe's death, Simon had saved his friend's life when he was forced into the appalling decision to cut the rope.

There have been many great and enduring works of literature by Caribbean authors over the last century. The Caribbean Contemporary Classics collection celebrates these deep and vibrant stories, overflowing with life and acute observations about society. Sunrise Orphanage is a happy place until the great sickness comes to the country, when the ten orphan children are left to fend for themselves. Normal life breaks down, and people do what they can to survive. Threatened with being taken to a labour camp, the children's only alternative is a perilous journey across the island. Sanctuary awaits them at Last Man Peak, but will they be able to reach it? Unforeseen danger waits at every turn. No one can be trusted. The arduous trek would be challenging enough even without the need to avoid capture - capture which would mean the labour camp, or possibly something much worse. The journey, with only their wits and courage to help them, will change their lives for ever. Suitable for readers aged 11 and above.

This book is designed to address the key elements of the 11 plus creative writing exam, using real creative pieces as examples. It contains 33 questions and extracts reflective of independent and grammar school exams, varying from fictional pieces that are full of colourful descriptions and interesting characters, to non-fictional letters and essays. These examples are a brilliant tool for your child to use in preparation for the exam. In the creative writing exam, your child could be given a range fiction or non-fiction briefs, a visual stimulus, a piece of text from which they have to continue the story, or an essay title. This book is divided into distinct sections, with a number of example pieces in each. Examining these extracts and completing the accompanying activities will give your child a better understanding of what is required of them in the exam. Alongside these activities, each story is partnered with a checklist and space for your child to write feedback. The checklist provides a list of what a good piece of creative writing should include, or what examiners are commonly looking for and rewarding, while the feedback creates your child's own list of what works well and what could be improved. In 2006 the Royal Shakespeare Company began its mission to transform the teaching of Shakespeare in schools. This has been a unique initiative from a major cultural organisation for several reasons: - Education has been placed at the heart and not at the periphery of the RSC's vision. Producing versions of Shakespeare's plays for young audiences has, for example, become an annual feature of the Company's programming. - The project's longevity - it has already been in existence for six years and has funding to continue for at least another four years; - The nature of the learning network it has established, involving schools from all over the UK and a partnership in the US; - The partnership with a higher education institution (the University of Warwick) which has steered teachers through their own research projects, resulting in a 90%+ completion rate among the teachers involved; - The amount of independent research that has established the extent and nature of the impact of this work in both quantitative and qualitative terms. The book tells the story of this transformative project - to describe and to theorise the innovative classroom practice that the RSC has pioneered and to explain what the research tells us about the impact this practice has had on children's experience of Shakespeare in both primary and secondary schools. It describes all of this in authoritative but accessible language, and is relevant to anyone with an interest in the teaching of Shakespeare and / or in how a major cultural organisation can use its expertise to impact significantly on the education of young people from a wide range of social backgrounds. As well as drawing upon the research already conducted, the book benefits from the writer's knowledge and expertise of the teaching of drama. It also benefits from interviews from internationally influential figures, notably Michael Boyd and Jonathan Bate. |
