Tobiah's travel with the angel in Tobit chapter six constitutes a

Lightning has evoked a numinous response as well as powerful
timeless references and symbols among ancient religions throughout
the world. Thunder and lightning have also taken on various
symbolic manifestations, some representing primary deities, as in
the case of Zeus and Jupiter in the Greco/Roman tradition, and Thor
in Norse myth. Similarly, lightning veneration played an important
role to the ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica and Andean South
America. Lightning veneration and the religious cults and their
associated rituals represent to varying degrees a worship of nature
and the forces that shape the natural world. The inter-relatedness
of the cultural and natural environment is related to what may be
called a widespread cultural perception of the natural world as
sacred, a kind of mythic landscape. Comparative analysis of the
Andes and Mesoamerica has been a recurring theme recently in part
because two of the areas of "high civilization" in the Americas
have much in common despite substantial ecological differences, and
in part because there is some evidence, of varying quality, that
some people had migrated from one area to the other. Lightning in
the Andes and Mesoamerica is the first ever study to explore the
symbolic elements surrounding lightning in their associated
Pre-Columbian religious ideologies. Moreover, it extends its
examination to contemporary culture to reveal how cultural
perceptions of the sacred, their symbolic representations and
ritual practices, and architectural representations in the
landscape were conjoined in the ancient past. Ethnographic accounts
and ethnohistoric documents provide insights through first-hand
accounts that broaden our understanding of levels of syncretism
since the European contact. The interdisciplinary research
presented herein also provides a basis for tracing back
Pre-Columbian manifestations of lightning its associated religious
beliefs and ritual practices, as well as its mythological,
symbolic, iconographic, and architectural representations to
earlier civilizations. This unique study will be of great interest
to scholars of Pre-Columbian South and Mesoamerica, and will
stimulate future comparative studies by archaeologists and
anthropologists.
Ezekiel's Visionary Temple in Babylonian Context examines evidence
from Babylonian sources to better understand Ezekiel's vision of
the future temple as it appears in chapters 40-48. Tova Ganzel
argues that Neo-Babylonian temples provide a meaningful backdrop
against which many unique features of Ezekiel's vision can and
should be interpreted. In pointing to the similarities between
Neo-Babylonian temples and the description in the book of Ezekiel,
Ganzel demonstrates how these temples served as a context for the
prophet's visions and describes the extent to which these
similarities provide a further basis for broader research of the
connections between Babylonia and the Bible. Ultimately, she argues
the extent to which the book of Ezekiel models its temple on those
of the Babylonians. Thus, this book suggests a comprehensive
picture of the book of Ezekiel's worldview and to contextualize its
visionary temple by comparing its vision to the actual temples
surrounding the Judeans in exile.

mortal women's couplings with gods; rituals like the basilinna's
"marriage" to Dionysus; beliefs in the impregnating power of snakes
and deities; the unusual birth stories of Pythagoras, Plato, and

Jarrod L. Whitaker examines the ritualized poetic construction of
male identity in the Rgveda, India's oldest Sanskrit text, arguing
that an important aspect of early Vedic life was the sustained
promotion and embodiment of what it means to be a true man. The
Rgveda contains over a thousand hymns, addressed primarily to three
gods: the deified ritual Fire, Agni; the war god, Indra; and Soma,
who is none other than the personification of the sacred beverage
soma. The hymns were sung in day-long fire rituals in which
poet-priests prepared the sacred drink to empower Indra. The
dominant image of Indra is that of a highly glamorized, violent,
and powerful Aryan male; the three gods represent the ideals of
manhood.
Whitaker finds that the Rgvedic poet-priests employed a fascinating
range of poetic and performative strategies--some explicit, others
very subtle--to construct their masculine ideology, while
justifying it as the most valid way for men to live. Poet-priests
naturalized this ideology by encoding it within a man's sense of
his body and physical self. Rgvedic ritual rhetoric and practices
thus encode specific male roles, especially the role of man as
warrior, while embedding these roles in a complex network of
social, economic, and political relationships.

The contributions in this volume are focused on the historical
origins, religious provenance, and social function of ancient
Jewish and Christian apocalyptic literature, including so-called
'Gnostic' writings. Although it is disputed whether there was a
genre of 'apocalyptic literature,' it is obvious that numerous
texts from ancient Judaism, early Christianity, and other religious
milieus share a specific view of history and the world to come.
Many of these writings are presented in form of a heavenly (divine)
revelation, mediated through an otherworldly figure (like an angel)
to an elected human being who discloses this revelation to his
recipients in written form. In different strands of early Judaism,
ancient Christianity as well as in Gnosticism, Manichaeism, and
Islam, apocalyptic writings played an important role from early on
and were produced also in later centuries. One of the most
characteristic features of these texts is their specific
interpretation of history, based on the knowledge about the upper,
divine realm and the world to come. Against this background the
volume deals with a wide range of apocalyptic texts from different
periods and various religious backgrounds.
First revealed by a Tibetan monk in the 14th century, Bardo Thodol
("Great Liberation upon Hearing in the Intermediate State") - known
more commonly as The Tibetan Book of the Dead - describes the
experience of human consciousness in the bardo, the interval
between death and the next rebirth in the cycle of death and
rebirth. The teachings are designed to help the dying regain
clarity of awareness at the moment of death, and by doing so
achieve enlightened liberation. Popular throughout the world since

karma"; and the process of rebirth. The text also includes chapters
on the signs of death and rituals to undertake for the dying.

The mythological hero Orpheus occupied a central role in ancient
Greek culture, but 'the son of Oeagrus' and 'Thracian musician'
venerated by the Greeks has also become a prominent figure in a
long tradition of classical reception of Greek myth. This book
challenges our entrenched idea of Orpheus and demonstrates that in
the Classical and Hellenistic periods depictions of his identity
and image were not as unequivocal as we tend to believe today.
Concentrating on Orpheus' ethnicity and geographical references in
ancient sources, Tomasz Mojsik traces the development of, and
changes in, the mythological image of the hero in Antiquity and
sheds new light on contemporary constructions of cultural identity
by locating the various versions of the mythical story within their
socio-political contexts. Examination of the early literary sources
prompts a reconsideration of the tradition which locates the tomb
of the hero in Macedonian Pieria, and the volume argues for the
emergence of this tradition as a reaction to the allegation of the
barbarity and civilizational backwardness of the Macedonians
throughout the wider Greek world. These assertions have important
implications for Archelaus' Hellenizing policy and his commonly
acknowledged sponsorship of the arts, which included his
incorporating of the Muses into the cult of Zeus at the Olympia in
Dium.
Traditionally, in the year 312, the Roman emperor Constantine
experienced a "vision of the Cross" that led him to convert to
Christianity and to defeat his last rival to the imperial throne;
and, in 394, a divine wind carried the emperor Theodosius to
victory at the battle of the Frigidus River. Other stories heralded
the discovery of the True Cross by Constantine's mother, Helena,
and the rise of a new kind of miracle-maker in the deserts of Egypt
and Syria. These miracle stories helped Christians understand the
dizzying changes in their fortunes during the century. They also
shed light on Christianity's conflict with other faiths and the
darker turn it took in subsequent ages. In A Century of Miracles,
historian H. A. Drake explores the role miracle stories played in
helping Christians, pagans, and Jews think about themselves and
each other. These stories, he concludes, bolstered Christian belief
that their god wanted the empire to be Christian. Most importantly,
they help explain how, after a century of trumpeting the power of
their god, Christians were able to deal with their failure to
protect the city of Rome from a barbarian sack by the Gothic army

established a new theoretical basis for success, but in the
meantime the popularity of miracle stories reassured the faithful -
even when the miracles came to an end. A Century of Miracles
