Every aspiring writer should read this book before he starts. Every doctor whose work has been rejected or changed should read it to find out what went wrong. Journalism is one of the msot challenging and rewarding of the writing skills, but success depends on sound preparation and careful thought. Tim Albert is widely recognized as the leading trainer in medical journalism and those who follow his step-by-step advice could quickly see their name in print. 'Tim Albert is ideally qualified to write this book. Not only is he a accomplished writer but he's one of the few journalists I know who is also a talented teacher. My only grouse about the book is that it didn't exist when I first hung up my stehoscope and tried to turn myself into a writer. It would have spared me months of struggle in an alien world where experience eventually taught me some of the lessons I could have learned less traumatically from these pages.' From the foreword by Michael O'Donnell
This is a comprehensive medical and scientific dictionary for the 21st century. This book takes a unique approach to 'learning medicine' in a manner that places primary emphasis on recall. Drawing upon well-established psychological principles, it uses a broad range of strategies to maximize the ability of the reader to recollect large swathes of information at a later date. The result is an original and refreshing book in which no two pages are quite alike, and where facts are presented in a hierarchical fashion so that essential features of each condition or symptom can be grasped immediately, while finer points are given in more detailed reading.
Dr. Logan W. Hovis parachuted onto Corregidor with the 503rd Regimental Combat Team. Dr. Jeremiah Henry Holleman served with the 89th Division all the way into Germany, liberating a concentration camp. Nurse Mary A. Breeding, five feet tall, and 100 pounds, served with the 174th General Hospital in France. Dr. Vincent Stephen Conti was awarded a Bronze Star for fighting typhus in Naples, Italy. These accounts and 31 others covering the heroics of 44 individuals working in the Medical Corps are gathered here by editor Patricia W. Sewell. Firsthand accounts are given by doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers, front-line medics, Navy corpsmen, medical personnel who served on air evacuation teams and hospital ships, and others who functioned in many different capacities. Autobiographies, interviews, letters and cassette tapes helped compose most of these narratives.
Often thought to be a primitive or ancient practice, scapegoating
is revealed here as occurring in the justice systems of modern
democracies. Ann Daniel, as a first-hand witness, documents several
widely publicized disciplinary cases brought against prominent
professionals in law and medicine. These were the people who became
scapegoats as their professional communities tried to rid itself of
troubles and confusions threatening their reputation at the
time.

Most military researchers who have attempted to measure organizational commitment have done so on an ad hoc basis, preferring to invent new items and scales rather than incorporate well-established measures. The purpose of this special issue is to reverse this trend by bringing military organizational commitment research into the scientific mainstream and to do so in ways that will prove useful to military services while advancing organizational commitment theory and knowledge. This special issue grew out of a symposium conducted at the 1998 American Psychological Association Convention that arose when many in the field recognized the practical importance of measuring organizational commitment while maintaining a healthy concern for ensuring that this measurement was well-grounded in organizational commitment theory. Taken together, the articles in this issue demonstrate the concepts of affective and continuance commitment and their underlying measures by using them in different military samples and under a variety operational conditions.
The ability to conduct measurements on living organisms and systems
has developed at a momentous rate concurrent with changes in
technology over recent years. Measurement plays a vital role in
developing our understanding of biological processes and in
furthering our ability to understand and then treat illnesses and
injuries. However, in conducting measurements on living organisms
the information we collect comes in many different guises, is
variable and the measurand is often unstable. Understanding these
complexities is fundamental to biological and biomedical
measurement. This concise encyclopedia therefore contains more than
a comprehensive survey of the measurement systems. It includes also
descriptions of the biological systems and subsystems so that the
way in which decisions are made on measurement for a given
application can be understood more easily. The encyclopedia
contains specially commissioned articles and updated and revised
articles from the acclaimed "Systems & Control Encyclopedia." A
vast array of disciplines are covered in this concise,
comprehensive single volume, which will be a vital reference tool
for practitioners in the area, measurement experts moving into the
biological and biomedical field and beginners needing to understand
methods of measurement and the complexities of the measurand.
