The clavichord, forerunner of the piano, was one of the most
important instruments in Western keyboard history until the first
decades of the nineteenth century. Bernard Brauchli's comprehensive
history fills a major gap in the literature on this instrument.
Beginning with the earliest-known references, he traces the
clavichord's evolution up to the mid-nineteenth century, ending
with a study of performance technique. The clavichord's structural
developments (traced largely through an analysis of extant
instruments), literary documentation (much of it presented here for
the first time in English), treatises and iconographical sources
are presented in chronological order. What emerges from this study
of the various sources is an overview of the essential role this
instrument played both socially and musically for more than four
centuries, restoring the clavichord to the position it justly
deserves in history. Awarded the Nicholas Bessaraboff Prize for
2001, honoring the best book-length organological study in the
English language published in 1998/99.

David Rowland traces the history of piano pedalling from its
beginnings in the eighteenth century to its first maturity in the
middle of the nineteenth century and beyond. Pedalling technique
was a major feature of nineteenth-century piano performance and,
coupled with new developments in piano structure, inspired many
composers to write innovative works for the literature. Rowland
examines this through the technique and music of composer-pianists
such as Beethoven, Liszt, and Chopin. In addition, he follows the
transition from harpsichord and clavichord to piano and outlines
the physical properties of the various stops, levers, and pedals
available at the different stages of the instrument's development.
The book also includes an appendix of translated extracts from
three well-known piano-pedalling tutors. It will be of interest to
students and scholars of music history and performance practice, as
well as to pianists.
The traditions of piano teaching have remained virtually unchanged
for generations, beginning with the influential technique of Muzio
Clementi (1752-1832), the first composer-pedagogue of the
instrument. His was followed by an explosion of sometimes bizarre
teaching systems, perhaps most notably Hanon's "The Virtuoso
Pianist"-exacting drills of reinforcement by repetition, often to
the disillusionment of beginners. Some 150 years later, these
methods-considered absurd or abusive by many students-have evolved
and persevered as part of music curricula in higher education.
Reflecting the author's belief that learning piano is both
gratifying and exasperating, this book critically examines two
centuries of teaching practices and encourages instructors to seek
more efficient and inspiring exercises.

Where to Place the Grace Note? offers a glimpse into the world of
classical piano music through a series of conversations between Lin
Li, an amateur pianist and English Literature scholar, and her
piano teacher Yu Chun Yee, who was Professor of Piano at the Royal
College of Music for thirty years. Starting from the seemingly
straightforward question in the book's title, their conversations
meander through a series of general issues pertaining to phrasing,
musical interpretation, teaching, technique, injury and performance
anxiety. Supplemented with numerous musical examples, snippets from
historical sources, and anecdotes that span Yu's teaching and
performing career from the 1950s to the present, this book will
delight both general music lovers and music professionals.

educationalist Paul Harris, has now been extended to offer a series
of editions supporting the Trinity College London sight-reading
criteria. Improve your sight-reading! Trinity Edition Initial Piano
has been specifically written to reflect Trinity's parameters for
beginner, sight-reading pianists and contains new material
throughout. Improve your sight-reading! series is designed to help
you overcome all your sight-reading problems. These books follow
the same progressive format as previous editions, where technical
aspects are introduced step-by-step firstly through rhythmic and
melodic exercises, then by studying prepared pieces with associated
questions, and finally by 'going solo' with a series of
meticulously graded sight-reading pieces.
(Piano). These anthologies contain original compositions by
nineteenth-century composers. Several of the pieces are available
for the first time as part of a graded collection. The repertoire
includes works by major composers, such as Chopin and Schumann, as
well as lesser-known pieces by, amongst others, Bortkiewicz and
Rimsky-Korsakov. These collections are ideal for piano teachers
looking for additional repertoire for their teaching practice. The
CD includes full performance demonstrations.
(Willis). Now available with a CD Burnam composed this collection
of piano pieces to correlate directly with her Step by Step piano
course method. Prefixed to each piece is an indication of the exact
page of Step by Step at which a selection from Pieces to Play may
be introduced. When the student reaches the indicated page, they
are ready to play with ease and with understanding. These pieces
would also be very useful as supplementary material for other piano
methods.

The Thirty-three Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli, Op. 120,
represent Beethoven's most extraordinary achievement in the art of
variation-writing. In their originality and power of invention,
they stand beside other late Beethoven masterpieces such as the
Ninth Symphony, the Missa Solemnis, and the last quartets. William
Kinderman's study of the compositional history of the work includes
the first extended investigation and reconstruction of the sketches
and drafts, and reveals, contrary to earlier views of its
chronology, that it was actually begun in 1819, then put aside, and
completed in 1822-3. Kinderman also provides an analytical
discussion of the complete work, and he demonstrates how insights
derived from a close study of the sketches can illuminate
Beethoven's compositional ideas and attitudes and contribute
substantially to a better understanding of this massive and complex
set of variations.
The book includes complete transcriptions of the two central
documents in the genesis of the Diabelli variations - the
reconstructed Wittgenstein Sketchbook and the Paris - Landsberg -
Montauban Draft.
Notes Become Music: A Guidebook from the Viennese Piano Tradition
addresses the many unwritten nuances of dynamics, articulation and
agogics as an expression of fundamental principles of a common
European musical language. It treats the score as an incomplete
musical shorthand that outlines the compositional and interpretive
imperatives implicit within it, drawing on historical records from
the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and detailed comparisons of
works to underline the author's presentation of Viennese tradition.
This book is not primarily concerned with questions of style or
interpretation. Rather, it explains the many facets of musical
notation that were taken for granted by composers who assumed a
knowledge of the piano tradition of their day. Notes Become Music
informs not only those students in countries where the central
European music tradition is still unfamiliar, but also a younger
generation of Europeans who have grown up without a living
connection to their musical past.
