BE Biringer
R2,571 Discovery Miles 25 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Proven set of best practices for security risk assessment and management, explained in plain English

This guidebook sets forth a systematic, proven set of best practices for security risk assessment and management of buildings and their supporting infrastructures. These practices are all designed to optimize the security of workplace environments for occupants and to protect the interests of owners and other stakeholders. The methods set forth by the authors stem from their research at Sandia National Laboratories and their practical experience working with both government and private facilities.

Following the authors' step-by-step methodology for performing a complete risk assessment, you learn to: Identify regional and site-specific threats that are likely and credible
Evaluate the consequences of these threats, including loss of life and property, economic impact, as well as damage to symbolic value and public confidence
Assess the effectiveness of physical and cyber security systems and determine site-specific vulnerabilities in the security system

The authors further provide you with the analytical tools needed to determine whether to accept a calculated estimate of risk or to reduce the estimated risk to a level that meets your particular security needs. You then learn to implement a risk-reduction program through proven methods to upgrade security to protect against a malicious act and/or mitigate the consequences of the act.

This comprehensive risk assessment and management approach has been used by various organizations, including the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Bonneville Power Administration, and numerous private corporations, to assess and manage security risk at their national infrastructure facilities. With its plain-English presentation coupled with step-by-step procedures, flowcharts, worksheets, and checklists, you can easily implement the same proven approach and methods for your organization or clients. Additional forms and resources are available online at www.wiley.com/go/securityrisk.

Intelligent Residential Buildings and the Behaviour of the Occupants - State of the Art (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019): Pedro F.... Intelligent Residential Buildings and the Behaviour of the Occupants - State of the Art (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019)
Pedro F. Pereira, Nuno M.M. Ramos, Joao M. P. Q. Delgado
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents the state of the art of two areas: intelligent residential buildings and the behaviour of their occupants. These areas need to be treated together in order to develop new concepts for buildings, which are more efficient, more comfortable and more healthy. The concept of intelligent building is associated with the creation of a management system that takes into account the requirements of the occupants in terms of thermal comfort and their daily activities, maintaining good indoor air quality and minimizing energy consumption. In commercial or office buildings, these systems are already at an intermediate stage of implementation. However, in the residential sector they have yet to be significantly implemented. In mild climates, where the interactions of the occupants with the building mechanisms are the primary way to ensure adequate comfort and ventilation, the importance of occupant behaviour studies and their incorporation in the algorithms of the intelligent buildings becomes even more crucial. This book offers new concepts on how to bring these aspects together.

Ronit Levine-Schnur
R3,117 Discovery Miles 31 170 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book discusses the fundamental issues regarding the effect of real estate regulation on housing, urban development, and considerations of justice and efficiency. Bringing together the contributions of prominent scholars representing diverse methodologies and academic disciplines, this book offers new perspectives on core topics such as the effectiveness of land use regulation in terms of housing availability, enhanced equality, and sustainable development; and different modes of regulation and their mutual influences. The book's eleven chapters are divided into five parts which address different aspects of real estate regulation, combining theoretical analysis with a close observation of diverse case studies, from North America and Europe to China, the Middle East, and developing economies. Part I offers cutting-edge analysis on how to measure, model, and understand the impact of zoning and other modes of real estate regulation, from economic and normative theoretical viewpoints. Part II complements Part I by providing historical observations and empirical knowledge on the actual contribution of zoning and historical conservation regulation to cities' shape. Part III considers the outcomes of business and industrial land development policies. Part IV studies urban land development regulation and allows to compare between two relevant case studies-one from Germany, and the other from Poland. Finally, Part V concerns standardization in the real estate market by analyzing the justification and outcomes of such attempts, particularly in the mortgages market. Providing an interface between theory and practice, the book will appeal to a broad audience, consisting of scholars, policy-makers, practitioners, and students, interested in an interdisciplinary overlook on real estate regulation.

Disaster Planning & Recovery - A Guide for Facility Professionals (Hardcover, New): AM Levitt Disaster Planning & Recovery - A Guide for Facility Professionals (Hardcover, New)
AM Levitt
R3,191 Discovery Miles 31 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"The focus of this guide is to assist you in planning for all the vital factors and imperative considerations essential in enhancing the likelihood of your organization's continuity and survival when impacted by an out-of-course event: planning to prevent disasters, planning to reduce the likelihood of disasters, planning to deal with disasters, and planning to recover after a disaster has affected the organization." — Alan M. Levitt

The only complete, hands-on guide to disaster planning, Disaster Planning and Recovery provides proven strategies, tools, and techniques for helping your company plan for, cope with, and recover from cataclysmic events. Internationally recognized business continuity expert Alan M. Levitt tells you what you need to know to avoid having natural and man-made disasters become business disasters. You'll find out how to:

  • Create an effective plan in advance
  • Reduce the likelihood of disasters
  • Maintain functioning when disaster strikes
  • Mobilize staff safely and efficiently during an emergency
  • Reduce costs of and recovery time following an out-of-course event
  • Work effectively with key departments, including IT, HR, maintenance
  • Minimize stress on staff members
  • And much more

Earthquakes, floods, fires, tornadoes . . . there isn't much you can do to stop them from happening, but there are steps you can take to prevent natural and man-made disasters from turning into business disasters. And that is what this book is all about: minimizing the damage done to your business by cataclysmic external events.

The only complete, practical guide of its kind, Disaster Planning and Recovery shows facility professionals how to prepare for, cope with, and rebound from a disaster. Alan Levitt clearly demonstrates that the first major step toward minimizing risk and optimizing recovery time following an emergency is to formulate a comprehensive disaster plan. Drawing upon his years of experience as a business continuity expert—and using fascinating and instructive vignettes and case studies (many of them previously unpublished) to illustrate his points—he shows you how to develop the most cost-effective plan possible.

Rather than offer a set of one-size-fits-all checklists and procedures, Levitt supplies a rational framework and proven strategies for formulating a plan tailored to your business. He shows you how to set reasonable goals that will allow you to react more quickly and effectively without losing sight of business outcomes. And he provides the means for researching and conducting the five phases of a comprehensive disaster/recovery plan: identifying potential disasters; quantifying the risk of occurrence; establishing parameters for reducing that risk; forecasting the potential impact a disaster can have on personnel, plant, and business processes; and establishing systems for counterbalancing those impacts.

Throughout Disaster Planning and Recovery, the emphasis is on human factors. Levitt describes techniques for efficiently mobilizing staff in an emergency, working effectively with key departments, such as IT, and most importantly, easing the stress that disasters can impose on staff members. Disaster Planning and Recovery is an indispensable resource for facility professionals, human resources managers, building owners and managers, architects, designers, and planners.

Managing Organizational Ecologies - Space, Management, and Organizations (Paperback): Keith Alexander, Ilfryn Price Managing Organizational Ecologies - Space, Management, and Organizations (Paperback)
Keith Alexander, Ilfryn Price
R1,305 Discovery Miles 13 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The term Facilities Management has become global but fraught with confusion as to what the term signifies. For some, notably in the USA, Facilities Management remains a discipline of human ecology. Elsewhere the term has become conflated with an alternative meaning: providing or outsourcing the provision of various services essential to the operation of particular buildings. This volume redresses that imbalance to remind Facilities Management of its roots, presenting evidence of Facilities Management success stories that engage the wider objectives of the organizations they serve, and engaging students, scholars and critical practitioners of general management with an appreciation of the power and influence of physical space and its place in the theory and practice of organizations. This book includes management perspectives from outside the field to ensure that the issues raised are seen in an organizational and management context, informing debate within the Facilities Management fraternity. It draws on human ecology and the perspective of the firm as, itself, an intra-organizational ecology of social constructs. The ecology of a firm is not restricted to the firm's boundaries. It extends to wider relationships between the firm and its stakeholders including, in an age of outsourced building services, the Facilities Management supply chain. This volume offers arguments and evidence that managing such constructs is a key role for Facilities Management and an important participant in the provision of truly usable spaces.

Energy Systems of Complex Buildings (Paperback): Andrzej Ziebik, Krzysztof Hoinka Energy Systems of Complex Buildings (Paperback)
Andrzej Ziebik, Krzysztof Hoinka
R4,915 Discovery Miles 49 150 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The production and consumption of energy carriers in complex buildings take place within the network of interconnected energy processes. For this reason, a change carried out in one energy process influences other energy processes. Therefore, all balance equations of energy carriers should be investigated as a whole, and energy management of complex buildings creates a large energy system with internal relationships between energy installations and the equipment, as well as external relationships with the environment. Energy Systems of Complex Buildings presents the system approach to the energy-ecological analysis of energy management in complex buildings. Mathematical models of balancing the direct energy consumption, as well as cumulative energy consumption and cumulative emission of noxious substances are based on input-output analysis. Algorithms devoted to system analysis in the exploitation of energy management of complex buildings are included. In the case of ecological analysis, a new approach is presented basing on the idea of thermoecological costs. In this way, two groups of noxious influence (depletion of non-renewable energy resources and emissions of noxious substances) are taken into account. The LCA energy-ecological analysis of complex buildings has also been presented. Students, building designers, energy auditors, and researchers will learn the methodology of evaluating the energy and ecological effects by applying new technologies and devices in buildings, which influence future investigations concerning the energy and ecological analysis of complex buildings.
