This book focuses on advanced methods for the structural and thermal analysis of deepwater pipelines and risers. It discusses the limit strength of sandwich pipes, including finite-element analysis using Python scripts, collapse of sandwich pipes with cementitious/polymer composites, buckle propagation of sandwich pipes, dynamic behavior of subsea pipes, flow-induced vibration of functionally graded pipes, two-phase flow-induced vibration of pipelines, vortex-induced vibration of free-spanning pipelines, and the thermal analysis of composites pipes with passive insulation, active heating, and phase change material layers. This thesis is focused on river and tidal stream power assessment, focussing particularly on uncertainties in power estimates resulting from inaccurate characterisation of bed roughness and turbine drag. It presents analytical and numerical models for the transfer of these uncertainties through to turbine power uncertainty in a strait, exploring how this affects metrics such as mean power and its standard deviation. Perturbation methods are used to determine the leading-order effects of friction and drag uncertainty in tidal stream power assessment. The methods for uncertainty transfer presented in this thesis could readily be applied to numerous other problems encountered in hydraulic engineering, such as flow routing, urban flood risk, and reservoir sedimentation. It will therefore be of interest to researchers, engineers, and students in these fields.
In Germany, the development of the first technologies of sonar and
radar were interrelated. Following Christian Hulsmeyer's forgotten
invention of the "Telemobiloskop" in 1904, two Berlin engineers,
Paul Gunther Erbsloh and Hans-Karl von Willisen, developed and
built devices to locate targets accurately by reflections with
underwater sound and radio waves. In 1934, they found their own
company for this work, called Gesellschaft fur Elektroakustische
und Mechanische Apparate (GEMA), which became the birthplace of
their famous Freya air-warning and Seetakt ocean-surveillance
radars.
This book investigates Reliability-based Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (RBMDO) theory and its application in the design of deep manned submersibles (DMSs). Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) is an effective design method for large engineering systems like aircraft, warships, and satellites, which require designers and engineers from various disciplines to cooperate with each other. MDO can be used to handle the conflicts that arise between these disciplines, and focuses on the optimal design of the system as a whole. However, it can also push designs to the brink of failure. In order to keep the system balanced, Reliability-based Design (RBD) must be incorporated into MDO. Consequently, new algorithms and methods have to be developed for RBMDO theory. This book is intended as an introduction to classical water wave theory for the college senior or first year graduate student. The material is self-contained; almost all mathematical and engineering concepts are presented or derived in the text, thus making the book accessible to practicing engineers as well.The book commences with a review of fluid mechanics and basic vector concepts. The formulation and solution of the governing boundary value problem for small amplitude waves are developed and the kinematic and pressure fields for short and long waves are explored. The transformation of waves due to variations in depth and their interactions with structures are derived. Wavemaker theories and the statistics of ocean waves are reviewed. The application of the water particle motions and pressure fields are applied to the calculation of wave forces on small and large objects. Extension of the linear theory results to several nonlinear wave properties is presented. Each chapter concludes with a set of homework problems exercising and sometimes extending the material presented in the chapter. An appendix provides a description of nine experiments which can be performed, with little additional equipment, in most wave tank facilities.
