This book provides a basic introduction to the application of conductive polymers in corrosion protection, especially for marine environment corrosion protection research. Conventional anticorrosive coatings, which are based on heavy metals such as chromium, zinc, and copper, are toxic to the environment. There has been a need to find suitable replacement coatings that are environmentally friendly as well as effective in inhibiting the corrosion of steel. Conductive polymers have garnered much attention in recent years due to their environmentally benign nature and high effectiveness in protecting against corrosion. This book introduces the history of these conductive polymers. The applications of conducting polymers, polymer composites, and nanocomposites for corrosion protection of different industrial metal substrates are explored based on reported experimental data, and their mechanism of inhibition is explained. This book also includes overviews of some recent works on marine antifouling, marine heavy-protective coatings, and waterborne paints by conducting polymer and inorganic composites. Conducting polymers and their family of stimuli-actuated polymers exhibit excellent application prospects in the fields of anticorrosion, antibacterial, antibiofouling, and waterborne-based coatings. The book describes currently applied and newly developed advanced numerical methods for wave-induced ship motions and loads. Besides well-established computational methods based on strip theory, panel methods and finite volume methods for unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (URANS), recent advances like a fully nonlinear Rankine panel method, URANS calculations including elastic hull deformations, and an improved method to predict added resistance in waves are explained in detail. Furthermore, statistical methods to assess extreme motions and loads are described both for linear and nonlinear responses in a stationary seaway as well as during long-term ship operations. Results of motions and loads, computed using the various methods, are compared with each other and with results of model experiments. Introductory chapters on fluid dynamics, motions of rigid and elastic ship hulls, numerical methods to compute fluid flows associated with wind waves, and the development and simulation of seaways complement the volume. It is a great tool for rig crew members who are afraid of calculations or have not done any math since school. I found it easy to follow with clear explanations and it flowed from topic to topic. This book investigates Reliability-based Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (RBMDO) theory and its application in the design of deep manned submersibles (DMSs). Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) is an effective design method for large engineering systems like aircraft, warships, and satellites, which require designers and engineers from various disciplines to cooperate with each other. MDO can be used to handle the conflicts that arise between these disciplines, and focuses on the optimal design of the system as a whole. However, it can also push designs to the brink of failure. In order to keep the system balanced, Reliability-based Design (RBD) must be incorporated into MDO. Consequently, new algorithms and methods have to be developed for RBMDO theory. This book provides an essential overview of MDO, RBD, and RBMDO and subsequently introduces key algorithms and methods by means of case analyses. This thesis from the Naval Postgraduate School analyzes the employability of laser weapons on a Navy Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) class ship to counter small and fast boat threats. A general model of laser weapons is established to identify the attributes that characterize the laser weapon system. Quantitative values of each attribute are compared with current laser systems (that are under development) to identify potential laser types for employment on the Navy ship. In addition, plausible operational scenarios of suicide attacks by multiple (up to three) small and fast motor boats equipped with Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) against LCS-class ships are drawn up. These provide input parameters for computation of the required laser parameters to neutralize such threats. Based on the chosen laser technology and the calculated laser parameters, the requirements for employment of the laser weapon system on a Navy ship are determined.
