As an objective of human security, it is important to understand the social system and to make more appropriate policies for people based on the bio-psycho-social viewpoint of health advocated by the World Health Organization (WHO). For countries with increasingly large populations of older adults, aging-related disorders cause many social handicaps. A comprehensive approach for integrating not only medical, but also psychosocial and spiritual viewpoints is needed for better health policy planning.During a risky situation such as a major disaster, which can critically affect peoples lives, people should utilize their brains more fully in order to survive; i.e., to understand the situation around them, to make a proper judgment call, and to choose their behaviors. All of these approaches are associated with brain functions. Understanding the situation primarily requires the posterior part of the brain, especially the parietal lobe.Briefly, the occipital, temporal, parietal, and frontal lobes are related to visual, auditory, other sensory, and motor functions, respectively. Each lobe has primary and secondary areas: The former is associated with primary function, whereas the latter is related to association functions, which add meaning to the primary information. In particular, visual and auditory information should be fully integrated to understand the situation and make a judgment call, which is the function of the parietal lobe.Human Security: Social Support for the Health of an Aging Population Based on Geriatric Behavioral Neurology is meant to help readers understand the bio-psycho-social viewpoint and bioethics of social support for elderly people. The second aim is to understand the social support system and Quality of Life (QOL) for handicapped and elderly people. Especially, the long-term care insurance system for elderly people in Japan, which is a well-organized system to support well-being in the elderly, needs to be understood. Also, dementia is one of the important age-related disorders that can affect not only patients themselves, but also their families, community residents, and society. The third objective is to understand dementia and dementing diseases, not only from a medical perspective, but in terms of psychosocial and spiritual aspects. Following the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, various cases of weakness due to the disaster were analyzed. Most of them were previously assessed as a borderline condition between healthy and dementia. Therefore, it is important to routinely screen community residents for security.All risky situations such as a disaster should be treated internationally. The author recalls that one student told them that the Indonesian government faces difficulties in preparing for a disaster with a unified language. Indeed, more than 700 regional languages are spoken in Indonesias numerous islands. However, disasters do not select a language. The author is certain that there are some lessons from their history that have not been recorded in a common language. It is important to establish a network based not only on local culture and language, but also a global proposal based on a common language.The author hopes that young scientists in the next generation will have an integrated perspective and will apply science to human security worldwide.

When Near Becomes Far explores the representations and depictions of old age in the rabbinic Jewish literature of late antiquity (150-600 CE). Through close literary readings and cultural analysis, the book reveals the gaps and tensions between idealized images of old age on the one hand, and the psychologically, physiologically, and socially complicated realities of aging on the other hand. The authors argue that while rabbinic literature presents a number of prescriptions related to qualities and activities that make for good old age, the respect and reverence that the elderly should be awarded, and harmonious intergenerational relationship, it also includes multiple anecdotes and narratives that portray aging in much more nuanced and poignant ways. These anecdotes and narratives relate, alongside fantasies about blissful or unnoticeable aging, a host of fears associated with old age: from the loss of physical capability and beauty to the loss of memory and mental acuity, and from marginalization in the community to being experienced as a burden by one's children. Exploring the potential of poetry and poetic language as a means of conveying perspectives on ageing and later life, this book examines questions such as 'how can we understand ageing and later life?' and 'how can we capture the ambiguities and complexities that the experiences of growing old in time and place entail?' As poetic language illuminates, transfigures and enchants our being in the world, it also offers insights into the existential questions that are amplified as we age, including the vulnerabilities and losses that humble us and connect us. Literary gerontology and narrative gerontology have highlighted the importance of linguistic representations of ageing. While the former has been concerned primarily with the analysis of published literary works, the latter has foregrounded the individual and collective meaning making through narrative resources in old age. There has, however, been less interest in how poetic language, both as a genre and as a practice, can illuminate ageing. This volume suggests a path towards the poetics of ageing by means of presenting analyses of published poetry on ageing written by poets from William Shakespeare to Wallace Stevens; the use of reading and writing poetry among ordinary people in old age; and the poetic nuances that emerge from other literary practices and contexts in relation to ageing - including personal poetic reflections from many of the contributing authors. The volume brings together international scholars from disciplinary backgrounds as diverse as cultural psychology, literary studies, theology, sociology, narrative medicine, cultural gerontology and narrative gerontology, and will deploy a variety of empirical and critical methodologies to explore how poetry and poetic language may challenge dominant discourses and illuminate alternative understandings of ageing.
It can be argued that ATP is the most important molecule in cells. Not only is ATP the key energy source for cells, but it is also the source of phosphate groups that are transferred to a variety of substrate proteins via the action of elaborate families of protein kinases. An equally elaborate array of protein phosphatases can remove phosphate groups from proteins. It is now well established that protein phosphorylation is a widely used mechanism for cells to selectively modulate the function of a variety of proteins including enzymes, ion channels and pumps and structural proteins. In this volume of ACAG leading experts describe the evidence that protein phosphorylation is altered in aging and age-related disease. Protein phosphorylation controls fundamental processes such as transcription and translation, regulation of the cell cycle, signalling within and between cells, cell motility, synaptic function and so on. Recent findings are revealing how phosphorylation dependent signalling cascades may control lifespan with a prime example being the insulin-signalling pathway first described in c-elegans and now emerging as an important regulator of lifespan of mammals also. Many of the functional changes that occur during aging such as impaired learning and memory and altered energy metabolism are controlled by protein phosphorylation and it is, therefore, important to understand how mechanisms of protein phosphorylation may either mediate aging or provide adaptive responses that allow successful disease-free aging. The authors in addition to considering the roles of protein phosphorylation in aging describe the evidence that abnormalities in protein phosphorylation contribute to the pathogenesis of major age-related diseases including diabetes, atherosclerosis and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.
The lipids of cellular membranes not only serve roles in controlling the structure and fluidity of the membrane, but are increasingly recognized for their roles as signalling molecules and modifiers of membrane protein function. Recent studies described in this volume reveal striking changes in membrane lipids during aging and in age-related diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative disorders. Lipids including inositol phospholipids, cholesterol, sphingolipids and ceramides play important roles in signalling cellular responses to stress and specific stimuli such as growth factors, cytokines and neurotransmitters. Dementia is a brain disorder that seriously affects a person's ability to carry out daily activities. The most common form of dementia among older people is Alzheimer's Disease (AD), which involves the parts of the brain that control memory, thought and language. Age is the most important known risk factor for AD. The number of people with the disease doubles every 5 years beyond age 65. AD is a slow disease, starting with mild memory loss and ending with severe brain damage. The course the disease takes and how fast changes occur vary from person to person. On average, AD patients live from 8 to 10 years after they are diagnosed, though the disease can last for as many as 20 years. Current research is aimed at understanding why AD occurs and who is at greatest risk for developing it, improving the accuracy of diagnosis and ability to identify who is at risk, developing, discovering and testing new treatments for behavioural problems in patients with AD.
