We Are the Change-Makers - poems supporting Drop the Disorder! (Paperback): Jo Watson We Are the Change-Makers - poems supporting Drop the Disorder! (Paperback)
Jo Watson
R536 Discovery Miles 5 360 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This is a unique collection of poems written by and for people who have survived our mental health system and the diagnostic process that is used to categorise and treat mental and emotional distress. In October 2016, Jo Watson launched A Disorder for Everyone (AD4E) – an international campaign to challenge the culture of psychiatric diagnosis and the labelling of expressions of emotional distress as medical disorders. Since then hundreds of people have attended AD4E events all over the UK, and thousands have joined the campaign Facebook group ‘Drop the Disorder!’ What began as a shout of protest has become an international roar. Poetry has long been used to give voice to resistance and to drive change in all kinds of social movements, and it is a central aspect of this campaign as well. It has been at the heart of every AD4E event and, more recently, several online poetry events have brought together poets and poetry-lovers from across the globe under the Drop the Disorder! banner. We Are the Change-Makers is a collection of these and other poems that seek to describe the otherwise inexpressible and challenge the power of psychiatry that misrepresents and medicates what it does not understand.

Differential Diagnosis in Primary Care (Paperback): M. Syed Differential Diagnosis in Primary Care (Paperback)
M. Syed
R1,426 Discovery Miles 14 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Formulating a diagnosis purely on the basis of clinical judgement can be fraught with difficulty and danger, yet this is the challenge faced every day by Primary Care physicians, who rarely have access to the diagnostic tools available to hospital-based colleagues.

"Differential Diagnosis in Primary Care" has been specifically written with the needs of the Primary Care physician in mind.

It examines the potential causes of common presentations and aims to help the physician differentiate between diseases, using history and examination alone.

Diseases are listed in descending order of prevalence, with the commonest causes first, while high-risk conditions are highlighted to ensure they are not overlooked. Its unique tabulated format ensures key information is easily accessible, and the user-friendly format ensures the book can be used during consultations, home visits, and on ward rounds.

Whether used by the undergraduate, postgraduate trainee or the experienced Primary Care physician, "Differential Diagnosis in Primary Care" is an invaluable tool designed to improve the reader's ability to diagnose on the basis of clinical judgement alone.

The Handbook of Biomarkers (Paperback, 2010 ed.): Kewal K. Jain The Handbook of Biomarkers (Paperback, 2010 ed.)
Kewal K. Jain
R4,296 Discovery Miles 42 960 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Of the thousands of biomarkers that are currently being discovered, relatively few are being validated for further applications, and the potential of a biomarker can be quite difficult to evaluate. To aid in this imperative research, Dr. Kewal K. Jain's Handbook of Biomarkers thoroughly describes many different types of biomarkers and their discovery using various "-omics" technologies, such as proteomics and metabolomics, along with the background information needed for the evaluation of biomarkers as well as the essential procedures for their validation and use in clinical trials. With biomarkers described first according to technologies and then according to various diseases, this detailed book features the key correlations between diseases and classifications of biomarkers, which provides the reader with a guide to sort out current and future biomarkers. Comprehensive and cutting-edge, The Handbook of Biomarkers serves as a vital guide to furthering our understanding of biomarkers, which, by facilitating the combination of therapeutics with diagnostics, promise to play an important role in the development of personalized medicine, one of the most important emerging trends in healthcare today.

Diagnosing Giants - Solving the Medical Mysteries of Thirteen Patients Who Changed the World (Hardcover, New): Philip A.... Diagnosing Giants - Solving the Medical Mysteries of Thirteen Patients Who Changed the World (Hardcover, New)
Philip A. Mackowiak
R864 Discovery Miles 8 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Our yesterdays have determined who we are today, and knowledge of our past has the potential to enhance both our understanding of the present and our predictions of the future. Diagnosing Giants traces the history of medicine through the illnesses of some of the most influential figures of the past. Standard biographies all too often pay scant attention to the health issues that affected their subjects. Yet, the diseases suffered by these figures had profound effects on their lives and their legacies. Each chapter opens with a detailed medical history of the patient. Facts relevant to the historical figure's life and legacy are woven into the case summary, and the mystery patient's identity is revealed at the conclusion of the case summary. The author then analyzes the medical history, offers a differential diagnosis and a final diagnosis. Where relevant, the potential effects of the subject's medical problems on his or her life and legacy are discussed. Diagnosing Giants is a must-own volume for medical professionals and history buffs alike.

A DXA Primer for the Practicing Clinician - A Case-Based Manual for Understanding and Interpreting Bone Densitometry... A DXA Primer for the Practicing Clinician - A Case-Based Manual for Understanding and Interpreting Bone Densitometry (Paperback, 2014 ed.)
Angelo A. Licata, Susan E Williams
R2,678 Discovery Miles 26 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Despite public perception, osteoporosis remains a widespread, devastating disease, and a very serious and costly public health threat. Early detection and treatment must be a priority for primary health care providers. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the principal x-ray technology used to diagnose osteoporosis in its early, asymptomatic stages, to assess treatment efficacy, and to guide treatment decisions. It remains the gold standard today." ""A DXA Primer for the Practicing Clinician: A Case-Based Manual for Understanding and Interpreting Bone Densitometry" is developed around real cases of patients DXA measurements. The content is derived from presentations given by the authors at a national society training course and exemplifies not only the complete body of education provided through these lectures but the full range of previously undiscussed nuances as well. This practical, easy-to-read title provides the day to day problems of DXA usage that new users may encounter and that training courses do not have time to provide in detail. The central focus of the book is the presentation of what is normal and what is problematic in the use of DXA, depicting various scenarios with real case histories of patients, their corresponding DXA images and the data that explain the problems. Unique in approach and presentation, this case-based manual will be of immense value to all practitioners -- and students interested in providing optimal diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. "

Drop the Disorder! - Challenging the culture of psychiatric diagnosis (Paperback): Jo Watson Drop the Disorder! - Challenging the culture of psychiatric diagnosis (Paperback)
Jo Watson
R687 Discovery Miles 6 870 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

In October 2016 Jo Watson hosted the very first `A Disorder for Everyone!' event in Birmingham, with psychologist Dr Lucy Johnstone, to explore (and explode) the culture of psychiatric diagnosis in mental health. To provide a space to continue the debate after the event, Jo also set up the now hugely popular and active Facebook group `Drop the Disorder!'.; Since then, they have delivered events in towns and cities across the UK, bringing together activists, survivors and professionals to debate psychiatric diagnosis. How and why does psychiatric diagnosis hold such power? What harm it can do? What are the alternatives to diagnosis, and how it can be positively challenged?; This book takes the themes, energy and passions of the AD4E events - bringing together many of the event speakers with others who have stories to tell and messages to share in the struggle to challenge diagnosis.; This is an essential book for everyone of us who looks beyond the labels.

Making the DSM-5 - Concepts and Controversies (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Joel Paris, James 'Phillips Making the DSM-5 - Concepts and Controversies (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Joel Paris, James 'Phillips
R2,864 Discovery Miles 28 640 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association published the 5thedition of its"Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders"(DSM-5). Often referred to as the "bible" of psychiatry, the manual only classifies mental disorders and does not explain them or guide their treatment. While science should be the basis of any diagnostic system, to date, there is no knowledge on whether most conditions listed in the manual are true diseases. Moreover, in DSM-5 the overall definition of mental disorder is weak, failing to distinguish psychopathology from normality. In spite of all the progress that has been made in neuroscience over the last few decades, the psychiatric community is no closer to understanding the etiology and pathogenesis of mental disorders than it was fifty years ago.

In"Making the DSM-5," prominent experts delve into the debate about psychiatric nosology and examine the conceptual and pragmatic issues underlying the new manual. While retracing the historic controversy over DSM, considering the political context and economic impact of the manual, and focusing on what was revised or left unchanged in the new edition, this timely volume addresses the main concerns of the future of psychiatry and questions whether the DSM legacy can truly improve the specialty and advance its goals.

Consultations in Infectious Disease - A Case Based Approach to Diagnosis and Management (Paperback): Daniel Caplivski,... Consultations in Infectious Disease - A Case Based Approach to Diagnosis and Management (Paperback)
Daniel Caplivski, W.Michael Scheld
R2,753 Discovery Miles 27 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Infectious diseases have plagued man throughout history. In the era of modern medicine antibiotics and vaccines brought the hope of liberation from the great scourges of smallpox, polio, and tuberculosis. Yet, in the ensuing decades as we hoped to close the book on infectious diseases, we have instead been confronted by wave upon wave of new assailants. AIDS, SARS, pandemic influenza, and multi-drug resistant bacteria demonstrated how our technological advances have either fallen short in halting or even enhanced the spread of emerging pathogens. International air travel has collapsed geographic boundaries that once confined tropical infections to distant latitudes. Novel forms of immunosuppression, advances in organ transplantation, and victories in the cancer wars have led to an ever-expanding population at risk for opportunistic infections. In this collection of illustrated cases we give a cross-sectional view of the growing challenges that face the infectious diseases consultant. The modern physician is empowered by high resolution imaging and molecular diagnostic techniques that confer diagnostic capabilities Osler could have only dreamed of. Nevertheless we continue to grapple with the timeless struggles illuminated by Pasteur, Koch, and Fleming between man and the microscopic organisms of the world.
Part of the new Oxford American Infectious Disease Library series, this book of illustrative cases will appeal to anyone working in a busy infectious diseases consultation service or practice including students, residents, fellows, faculty and other ID practitioners. Featuring numerous high-quality images and illustrations guiding diagnosis and case discussion, the handbook is meant to serve as a highly practical guide covering current approaches and new developments in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of a cross section of infectious diseases, including community-acquired and healthcare-associated infections.

--Alex Gitterma
Zachs Professor and Director of PhD Program

""Competency-Based Assessment in Mental Health Practice" not only describes the rather cumbersome DSM-IV-TR(R) in a manner that graduate students and clinicians can easily understand and apply, but it also presents a competency-based type of clinical assessment that most effectively integrates the social work practice orientation that acknowledges, appreciates, and nurtures client strengths, resilience, and client ability for empowerment."
--Agathi Glezakos, PhD, LCSW
School of Social Work
California State University, Long Beach

"A competency-based assessment model integrating"
"DSM classifications for a complete, strengths-based diagnosis"

"Competency-Based Assessments in Mental Health Practice" introduces a unique, competency-based assessment that presents a brief overview of the major mental disorders that practitioners will likely encounter in their work with clients, followed by a series of case studies and practical applications.

This book provides valuable guidance for clinicians to make assessments grounded in client strengths and possibilities for a more therapeutically complete picture of every client's "story."

Organized around selected diagnostic categories from the "DSM-IV-TR," this hands-on guide offers a multidimensional look at the many factors that play a role in a client's life. Its holistic approach to the assessment process considers each client's unique experience with mental illness, through a concurrent evaluation of strengths and pathology, in order to set the stage for realistic optimism about the potential for change.
