Learning Microbiology through Clinical Consultation (Paperback): Berenice Langdon, Aodhan Breathnach Learning Microbiology through Clinical Consultation (Paperback)
Berenice Langdon, Aodhan Breathnach
R1,823 Discovery Miles 18 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An understanding of microbiology is essential for both medical students and newly qualified doctors, and is key knowledge for a working doctor. Learning Microbiology through Clinical Consultation introduces the subject with a wealth of life-like case scenarios, each linked with the relevant microbiology. Spanning 14 categories of infection, the cases within the book allow the reader to listen-in on clinical consultations with patients exhibiting an array of symptoms. Each case then describes the examination and the specimen taking techniques. The results of the samples taken in the story provide a clear link to the more technical information on microbiology which is then discussed. The structure of the book is laid out for easy navigation and has clear case-story headings to enable 'just in time learning' between patients, as well as 'just in case learning' when preparing for exams. Learning Microbiology through Clinical Consultation is a highly accessible text that describes the basic science of microbiology within the practice setting in an insightful and informative way. The material is presented in an integrated fashion and is therefore an ideal text for medical students on a systems-based or problem-based course, or for the newly qualified doctor looking to consolidate their knowledge.

French's Index of Differential Diagnosis an A-Z (Paperback, 16th edition): Mark T Kinirons, Harold Ellis French's Index of Differential Diagnosis an A-Z (Paperback, 16th edition)
Mark T Kinirons, Harold Ellis
R3,039 Discovery Miles 30 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1912, French's Index of Differential Diagnosis helps clinicians in the differential diagnosis of any condition which may be seen in hospital or general practice. Arranged alphabetically by symptom, the text helps readers identify each presentation, describes the different diagnoses that it could represent, and explains the tests used to make a diagnosis. Colour clinical photographs help with diagnoses at a glance. The book is completely revised - many sections are largely rewritten, new ones added, diagnostic methods updated, many old illustrations replaced and others inserted. The emphasis, however, remains the same: the importance of a careful history, detailed clinical examination and the judicious use of laboratory and imaging investigations in the elucidation of the correct diagnosis. This reference is indispensable to medical students as well as trainee and established doctors in both general and hospital practice.

Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment (Hardcover, 6th Revised edition): American Medical Association Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment (Hardcover, 6th Revised edition)
American Medical Association; Edited by Robert D. Rondinelli, Elizabeth Genovese, Richard T. Katz, Tom G. Mayer, …
R4,575 R4,125 Discovery Miles 41 250 Save R450 (10%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Widely accepted as the most reliable medical reference on impairment evaluation since its inception in 1971, the Guides is highly valued by physicians who use its authoritative chapters to determine how to assess for impairment. The new edition of the Guides continues to build from this legacy by focusing on physician interrater reliability through an updated consensus approach that considers the latest evidence and patient function. The result is a new standard that seeks to evaluate impairment using a series of uniform grids for each chapter. Covering every body system, Guides Sixth Edition provides a standardized approach to determine impairment assessment using patient history, physical examination and clinical tests. Uniformity and ease of use is stressed to provide a consistent rating for conditions in each of the body systems using evidence based methodologies and, when lacking, a consensus approach. The Guides was developed with open deliberations from participating national medical specialty societies and state medical associations. An oversight advisory panel was established to broaden fuller participation of stakeholders. An Editorial Panel was created to review past editions and make recommendations and oversee the development of the Sixth Edition. An expansive stakeholder review was implemented to ensure consensus based content and expert medical review.

Transfusion Medicine and Patient Safety (Hardcover): Giustina De Silvestro, Arianna Veronesi, Maria Vicarioto Transfusion Medicine and Patient Safety (Hardcover)
Giustina De Silvestro, Arianna Veronesi, Maria Vicarioto
R1,119 R931 Discovery Miles 9 310 Save R188 (17%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Blood transfusion is considered a life-saving therapy since ancient times, but, at the same time, a high-risk procedure. Nowadays the common perception is that infection is the greatest risk, even if the blood has never been safer from this point of view. Currently, the residual risk of transfusion must be related mainly to immunological mechanisms underlying to AB0 and minor blood systems, to compatibility of blood transfused and to development of irregular antibodies in transfused patients. "Transfusion Medicine and Patient Safety" aims to provide the basic of immunohematology to readers and to analyze the transfusional process highlighting the most critical points, thus more exposed to errors. Screening on blood and blood components for infectious diseases along with the surveillance action on emerging viruses results in the drastic reduction of post-transfusion infection, together with the potential to further increase the level of security from infection through the inactivation of blood components. The text also describes the major diagnostic systems and organizational models that modern technology provides us with a correct immunohematological diagnosis and an appropriate trasfusional therapy.

Diagnosis - Interpreting the Shadows (Paperback): Pat Croskerry, Karen Cosby, Mark L Graber, Hardeep Singh Diagnosis - Interpreting the Shadows (Paperback)
Pat Croskerry, Karen Cosby, Mark L Graber, Hardeep Singh
R1,622 Discovery Miles 16 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Despite diagnosis being the key feature of a physician's clinical performance, this is the first book that deals specifically with the topic. In recent years, however, considerable interest has been shown in this area and significant developments have occurred in two main areas: a) an awareness and increasing understanding of the critical role of clinical decision making in the process of diagnosis, and of the multiple factors that impact it, and b) a similar appreciation of the role of the healthcare system in supporting clinicians in their efforts to make accurate diagnoses. Although medicine has seen major gains in knowledge and technology over the last few decades, there is a consensus that the diagnostic failure rate remains in the order of 10-15%. This book provides an overview of the major issues in this area, in particular focusing on where the diagnostic process fails, and where improvements might be made.

Multiple Sclerosis (Paperback): Neil Scolding, Alastair Wilkins Multiple Sclerosis (Paperback)
Neil Scolding, Alastair Wilkins
R1,188 Discovery Miles 11 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Multiple sclerosis is the most common neurological cause of debilitation in young people; it affects approximately 85,000 people in the UK, 400,000 people in the US and approximately 2.5 million people worldwide. The disease commonly manifests in the second or third decade of life, and in most cases it leads to progressive disability, which explains its enormous impact on the economy (estimated at around GBP1.4 billion annually). The disease is incurable and the precise causes are still unknown. Part of the Oxford Neurology Library series, this practical pocketbook summarises the latest understanding of what might cause the disease, the methods of diagnosis and assessment, and current management techniques. The book also includes chapters on variants of multiple sclerosis, on childhood-onset disease and future therapies. This pocketbook will serve as an invaluable reference for trainee neurologists, consultants needing rapid access to core facts, interested general practitioners and specialist MS nurses.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Men (Paperback, New): Alexander Bachmann, Jean De la Rosette Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Men (Paperback, New)
Alexander Bachmann, Jean De la Rosette
R744 Discovery Miles 7 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The diagnosis and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is considered to be one of the most important topics in urology and afflicts millions of older men world-wide. Although it is not life threatening, its clinical manifestation as lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) reduces the patient's quality of life over many years. Patients often suffer from LUTS due to BPH for a long time. If left untreated, the patients are at significant risk of potentially severe complications. Over the last decade, new diagnostic approaches and treatment options such as prostate lasers have become more accepted in the urological community. This pocketbook provides an update of several aspects related with BPH / LUTS and covers the entire background, diagnostic process and treatment options available to patients suffering from LUTS due to BPH. It will give trainees in urology and general physicians a quick, concise but complete overview of diagnostic processes and recommended treatment options.

Immunodiagnostics and Patient Safety (Hardcover): Krystyna Sztefko Immunodiagnostics and Patient Safety (Hardcover)
Krystyna Sztefko
R942 Discovery Miles 9 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Today most of immunochemistry methods for the determination of proteins, peptides, drugs, and many small molecules are fully automated, with good precision, excellent sensitivity and short reaction time. However, inaccuracy due to poor standardization and the presence of interfering substances in biological samples is still a serious and life-threatening issue. Proper validation of methods and quality assurance have little effect on frequency of occurrence of false positive or false negative results, which, if unrecognized, may lead to patient's misdiagnosis, unnecessary treatment or even unnecessary surgery. Deep knowledge of basic principles of immunochemical methods (antigen-antibody reaction, standardization, matrix effect, limit of detection, cross-reactivity, etc.), sources of analyte-independent interferences (preanalitycal errors, the presence of binding proteins, the presence of autoantibodies) and analyte-dependent interferences (presence of heterophilic antibodies, high-dose effect) are very important to understand, detect, reduce and/or eliminate the interferences. This book helps to reduce false results and, at the same time, improve patient's care and patient's safety.

Handbook of Electrogastrography (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Kenneth L. Koch, Robert M. Stern Handbook of Electrogastrography (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Kenneth L. Koch, Robert M. Stern
R2,079 Discovery Miles 20 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Handbook of Electrogastrography is the first textbook dedicated to reviewing the physiology of gastric myelectrical activity and the measurement of this electrical activity with electrodes placed on the abdominal surface - the electrogastrogram. The Handbook is divided into three major sections. The first section (Chapters 1-3) focuses on the history of electrogastrography, electrical activity of the interstitial cells of Cajal, the cells from which gastric electrical rhythmicity emanates. The cellular level of gastric electrical rhythmicity provides an understanding of the physiological basis of the electrogastrogram signal.

The second major section of the book (Chapters 4-6) incorporates the practical aspects of recording a high quality electrogastrogram and approaches to the analysis of the electrogastrogram using visual inspection and computer techniques. This section focuses on the authors' combined experience of examining EGG recordings for more than sixty years. From this rich research and clinical experience, the clinical application of EGG recordings in an approach to patients with unexplained nausea and vomiting is described. Neuromuscular disorders of the stomach involving gastric dysrhythmias are reviewed.

The third major section of the book (Chapters 7-9) comprises many examples of gastric dysrythmias ranging from bradygastrias to tachygastrias and mixed dysrythmias. Current understanding of the mechanisms of gastric dysrhythmias is reviewed. Artifacts in the EGG signal, which may be confused with gastric dysrhythmias, are also presented.

The Handbook of Electrogastrography will be a valuable reference for physicians interested in recording gastric electrical activity in clinical practices or in clinical research. Gastroenterologists, internists, psychologists and others with an interest in gastric myoelectrical events will also find extensive and relevant information for recording and interpreting EGGs in the Handbook.

EGFR-Directed Therapy in Lung Cancer (Paperback): Soyeon Kim, Daniel B. Costa, Daisuke Shibahara, Susumu Kobayashi, Balazs... EGFR-Directed Therapy in Lung Cancer (Paperback)
Soyeon Kim, Daniel B. Costa, Daisuke Shibahara, Susumu Kobayashi, Balazs Halmos
R613 Discovery Miles 6 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a clinically important driver alteration affecting approximately one-third of lung cancer patients. Treatments for EGFR-exon 19 deletion and exon 21 L858R NSCLC have evolved over the last decade from first-generation reversible tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) to third-generation irreversible TKIs, of which osimertinib has been the widely accepted as first-line therapy. Despite survival improvement seen with osimertinib and its efficacy against acquired T790M mutation, resistance through on-target and off-target pathways eventually develop. This Element describes the structural biology and pathophysiology of EGFR-mutant NSCLC and discusses past, current, and future treatment options in the metastatic, neoadjuvant, and adjuvant settings. It describes the biology and recently approved treatment for EGFR-exon 20 insertion mutation and the treatment for the uncommon exon 18 (G719X), 20 (S768I), and 21 (L861Q) mutations. It also outlines the promising clinical applications of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA).

Overdiagnosed - Making People Sick in the Pursuit of Health (Paperback): H. Gilbert Welch, Lisa Schwartz, Steve Woloshin Overdiagnosed - Making People Sick in the Pursuit of Health (Paperback)
H. Gilbert Welch, Lisa Schwartz, Steve Woloshin
R428 Discovery Miles 4 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A complex web of factors has created the phenomenon of overdiagnosis: the popular media promotes fear of disease and perpetuates the myth that early, aggressive treatment is always best; in an attempt to avoid lawsuits, doctors have begun to leave no test undone, no abnormality overlooked; and profits are being made from screenings, medical procedures, and pharmaceuticals. Revealing the social, medical, and economic ramifications of a health-care system that overdiagnoses and overtreats patients, Dr. H. Gilbert Welch makes a reasoned call for change that would save us pain, worry, and money.

Drop the Disorder! - Challenging the culture of psychiatric diagnosis (Paperback): Jo Watson Drop the Disorder! - Challenging the culture of psychiatric diagnosis (Paperback)
Jo Watson
R725 Discovery Miles 7 250 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

In October 2016 Jo Watson hosted the very first `A Disorder for Everyone!' event in Birmingham, with psychologist Dr Lucy Johnstone, to explore (and explode) the culture of psychiatric diagnosis in mental health. To provide a space to continue the debate after the event, Jo also set up the now hugely popular and active Facebook group `Drop the Disorder!'.; Since then, they have delivered events in towns and cities across the UK, bringing together activists, survivors and professionals to debate psychiatric diagnosis. How and why does psychiatric diagnosis hold such power? What harm it can do? What are the alternatives to diagnosis, and how it can be positively challenged?; This book takes the themes, energy and passions of the AD4E events - bringing together many of the event speakers with others who have stories to tell and messages to share in the struggle to challenge diagnosis.; This is an essential book for everyone of us who looks beyond the labels.

The Urinary Sediment - An Integrated View (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): Giovanni Fogazzi, Claudio Ponticelli, Eberhard Ritz The Urinary Sediment - An Integrated View (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
Giovanni Fogazzi, Claudio Ponticelli, Eberhard Ritz
R9,567 Discovery Miles 95 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the second edition of a full colour reference atlas published first to excellent reviews in 1994. Every renal unit needs to have a reference text of this kind and urine microscopy is an important diagnostic aid in nephrology. After the 'Historical Introduction' by J Stewart Cameron, chapter 1 descibes the methods used to prepare and analyse the urine samples. Chapter 2, which is the most important section of the book, describes with the help of 249 illustrations (over 200 in full colour) the elements of the urinary sediment. Chapter 3 deals with the urinary sediment of the normal subject, while chapter 4 deals with the urinary changes which are observed in the main diseases of the kidney and urinary tract. Chapter 5 describes the changes of the urinary sediment caused by drugs. Chapter 6 is about the interpretation of the urinary findings shown in the previous chapters. Chapter 7 covers the new systems to analyse the urinary sediments. An appendix shows how to adjust the microscope to analyse the urine specimens. The primary audience is practising nephrologists and nephrologists in training, and also those in internal medicine rotating through the renal unit who perform routinely the analysis of the urinary sediment. Clinical pathologists would also find this an attractive and useful book. The illustrations are outstanding and additional clinical information has been added in this new edition. From review from the Lancet of the first edition in comparison with a competing title: 'Every nephrologist knows and teaches that urine microscopy is an important diagnostic aid. What has been urgently needed is a colour guide to the subject.....I preferred the pictures in the European book. They were of high quality, not repetitive and with clear legends...if I wanted to teach myself.. then the European book was well ahead. The latter is also accompanied by an elegant introductory essay by JS Cameron on the history of urine analysis. Every renal unit needs at least one of these books.' The Lancet
