Ben Challacombe, Simon Bott
R2,041 Discovery Miles 20 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Urological disease affects huge numbers of patients at some point in their lives. Diagnostic techniques are critical to ensure the correct diagnosis is made in a timely manner. A huge number of new technologies have been introduced in recent years to aid in this diagnostic pathway in the form of urine tests, blood tests and imaging modalities. Both urologists and other clinicians interested in urology have struggled to keep up with the rapid evolution of these techniques. This book contains up to date and state of the art contributions from major names in the field. It describes the diagnostic pathways for the key aspects of urological disease. Readers will be able to equate symptoms and signs with the relevant investigations. The book focuses on the diagnostic pathways involved, bringing together international leaders in the field who describe the current status of urological investigation.

A DXA Primer for the Practicing Clinician - A Case-Based Manual for Understanding and Interpreting Bone Densitometry... A DXA Primer for the Practicing Clinician - A Case-Based Manual for Understanding and Interpreting Bone Densitometry (Paperback, 2014 ed.)
Angelo A. Licata, Susan E Williams
R3,604 Discovery Miles 36 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Despite public perception, osteoporosis remains a widespread, devastating disease, and a very serious and costly public health threat. Early detection and treatment must be a priority for primary health care providers. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the principal x-ray technology used to diagnose osteoporosis in its early, asymptomatic stages, to assess treatment efficacy, and to guide treatment decisions. It remains the gold standard today." ""A DXA Primer for the Practicing Clinician: A Case-Based Manual for Understanding and Interpreting Bone Densitometry" is developed around real cases of patients DXA measurements. The content is derived from presentations given by the authors at a national society training course and exemplifies not only the complete body of education provided through these lectures but the full range of previously undiscussed nuances as well. This practical, easy-to-read title provides the day to day problems of DXA usage that new users may encounter and that training courses do not have time to provide in detail. The central focus of the book is the presentation of what is normal and what is problematic in the use of DXA, depicting various scenarios with real case histories of patients, their corresponding DXA images and the data that explain the problems. Unique in approach and presentation, this case-based manual will be of immense value to all practitioners -- and students interested in providing optimal diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. "

Making the DSM-5 - Concepts and Controversies (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Joel Paris, James 'Phillips Making the DSM-5 - Concepts and Controversies (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Joel Paris, James 'Phillips
R3,287 Discovery Miles 32 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association published the 5thedition of its"Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders"(DSM-5). Often referred to as the "bible" of psychiatry, the manual only classifies mental disorders and does not explain them or guide their treatment. While science should be the basis of any diagnostic system, to date, there is no knowledge on whether most conditions listed in the manual are true diseases. Moreover, in DSM-5 the overall definition of mental disorder is weak, failing to distinguish psychopathology from normality. In spite of all the progress that has been made in neuroscience over the last few decades, the psychiatric community is no closer to understanding the etiology and pathogenesis of mental disorders than it was fifty years ago.

In"Making the DSM-5," prominent experts delve into the debate about psychiatric nosology and examine the conceptual and pragmatic issues underlying the new manual. While retracing the historic controversy over DSM, considering the political context and economic impact of the manual, and focusing on what was revised or left unchanged in the new edition, this timely volume addresses the main concerns of the future of psychiatry and questions whether the DSM legacy can truly improve the specialty and advance its goals.

R1,272 Discovery Miles 12 720 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Differential Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder provides a framework for clinical considerations and best practices related to diagnosing children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) versus commonly co-occurring conditions. Differential diagnosis is a complex process, and it is common for clinicians to observe symptom overlap between conditions. In this comprehensive text, the authors focus on the similarities and differences between ASD and a second diagnosis. Leading experts provide practical guidance in the diagnostic process for ASD versus a second condition, such as anxiety or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Each chapter includes clinical case studies to provide real-world examples of how clinicians make diagnostic decisions. Ample illustrations and 'decision trees' provide a visual representation of clinical decision-making.

SW Gray
R1,628 Discovery Miles 16 280 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

""Competency-Based Assessments in Mental Health Practice" should be required reading for all clinical practitioners and students. Author Susan W. Gray provides a competency-based assessment model that moves away from looking at mental illness as a 'disease' to capturing people's strengths and the uniqueness of their experience with mental illness."
--Alex Gitterma
Zachs Professor and Director of PhD Program

""Competency-Based Assessment in Mental Health Practice" not only describes the rather cumbersome DSM-IV-TR(R) in a manner that graduate students and clinicians can easily understand and apply, but it also presents a competency-based type of clinical assessment that most effectively integrates the social work practice orientation that acknowledges, appreciates, and nurtures client strengths, resilience, and client ability for empowerment."
--Agathi Glezakos, PhD, LCSW
School of Social Work
California State University, Long Beach

"A competency-based assessment model integrating"
"DSM classifications for a complete, strengths-based diagnosis"

"Competency-Based Assessments in Mental Health Practice" introduces a unique, competency-based assessment that presents a brief overview of the major mental disorders that practitioners will likely encounter in their work with clients, followed by a series of case studies and practical applications.

This book provides valuable guidance for clinicians to make assessments grounded in client strengths and possibilities for a more therapeutically complete picture of every client's "story."

Organized around selected diagnostic categories from the "DSM-IV-TR," this hands-on guide offers a multidimensional look at the many factors that play a role in a client's life. Its holistic approach to the assessment process considers each client's unique experience with mental illness, through a concurrent evaluation of strengths and pathology, in order to set the stage for realistic optimism about the potential for change.

The Diagnostic Process - A Model for Clinical Teachers (Paperback): John I. Balla The Diagnostic Process - A Model for Clinical Teachers (Paperback)
John I. Balla
R1,231 Discovery Miles 12 310 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book examining diagnosis was first published in 1985. Diagnosis is at the centre of medical practice and depends on skilled information processing and decision making. Medical students, who will spend their working lives gathering information from patients, making decisions and solving problems need to be taught the necessary techniques. One aim of the book is, therefore, to give teachers an account of some of the basic ideas which have been applied to the diagnostic process and to medical problem solving in general. Another aim is to make teachers more aware of the principles underlying their clinical work, for it has been shown repeatedly that clinicians' actions do not always coincide with their teaching and there is a distinct gap between what they do and what they teach. This introduction to the fundamental concepts of information processing and decision making is written at a level which makes it appropriate reading for those who have not previously read widely in these areas. It will be of interest to clinical teachers in medical and allied health professions.

Interpreting Epidemiologic Evidence - Connecting Research to Applications (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): David A. Savitz,... Interpreting Epidemiologic Evidence - Connecting Research to Applications (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
David A. Savitz, Gregory A Wellenius
R2,487 Discovery Miles 24 870 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Epidemiology, the so-called "science of public health," has undergone a boom in the last decade as public interest and engagement in population health has skyrocketed. While this boom has done much to spark advances in the technology of epidemiology, it has also made it harder for those who want to use epidemiology to guide policy and clinical practice to fully appreciate the meaning of the research findings. Interpreting Epidemiologic Evidence offers those who have had an introductory course in epidemiology the knowledge they need to make clear connections from research findings to practical applications. Written in clear and lively prose, it empowers students at all levels to evaluate a study's design, implementation, and ultimate findings, giving the guidance needed to apply the information appropriately. Liberal use of practical examples serves both to illustrate core concepts and to motivate readers to think critically about the causal connections that population health studies aim to explore. Completely revised and updated, this new edition of Interpreting Epidemiologic Evidence is an invaluable core text for both epidemiologists in training and practitioners across other disciplines with even an introductory knowledge of epidemiology.

How to request a test: A clinician's guide to the interpretation and evaluation of medical tests (Paperback): Tom Boyles How to request a test: A clinician's guide to the interpretation and evaluation of medical tests (Paperback)
Tom Boyles
R687 Discovery Miles 6 870 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Medical tests consume considerable resources and yet making requests is often left to the most junior members of the team. Medical schools often under prepare junior doctors for these tasks so they tend to request large numbers of tests to make sure 'all bases are covered' by the time a more senior colleague attends to the patient. Beginning with naive questions such as 'what is a medical test?' and 'why do we perform tests?', the book also covers the evaluation of tests from a public health perspective and helps the readers to determine whether a test should be introduced into clinical care. By describing the basics of medical decision making based on probability thresholds, students will learn how to avoid unnecessary testing when results are unlikely to influence patient relevant decisions, and the pros and cons of using metrics such as sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values. Illustrated throughout with real life examples from multiple medical and surgical specialties, it concludes with a novel checklist for doctors to consider every time they think of requesting a test. Written by a clinician for clinicians, this book is ideal for medical students and junior doctors. It provides everything they need to know to become experts at requesting tests. It will support them in requesting the most appropriate and effective tests, and inform them on how to interpret results, improving patients' outcomes.

Biopsy Pathology of the Bronchi, 9 (Hardcover, Softcover Repri): E. McDowell, T.F. Beals Biopsy Pathology of the Bronchi, 9 (Hardcover, Softcover Repri)
E. McDowell, T.F. Beals
R1,623 Discovery Miles 16 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Biopsy Pathology of the Bronchi is intended to provide the practicing pathologist with a convenient source of diagnostic information, combined with pertinent clinical patterns and a background of histogenesis. It is hoped that the book will facilitate the accuracy of diagnosis, minimize pitfalls of interpretation and assist in the rapid evaluation of acute and chronic bronchial lesions, including neoplasms. Biopsy is taken in the widest sense and the book includes discussions on cytology, microbiopsies (fine needle aspiration biopsies, curette samples, and biopsies obtained by microforceps) and macrobiopsies, obtained at the time of surgery. Part I of the book deals with the procurement and preparation of bronchial specimens and includes a chapter on fetal development and structure of the normal adult epithelium. In Part II, the histopathology of numerous bronchial diseases are described in detail. Emphasis is placed on the diagnostic features of human lesions' which are illustrated by numerous high quality light and electron micrographs. Understanding normal bron chial structure, cell kinetics, and modulations of phenotypic expression provide insight into many pathological processes. Therefore, although emphasis is placed on the diagnostic features of human disease, the histopathology of corresponding lesions in experimental animals is dis cussed where this provides information helpful in the interpretation of the human lesions. Elizabeth M. McDowell Baltimore Theodore F. Beals Ann Arbor 1985 viii Acknowledgments We give thanks to friends and colleagues who reviewed one or more chapters for us during the writing of this book."
