VIP - Voice Impact Profile (Paperback, 1 New Ed): Stephanie Martin, Myra Lockhart VIP - Voice Impact Profile (Paperback, 1 New Ed)
Stephanie Martin, Myra Lockhart
R2,157 Discovery Miles 21 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The "VIP" is a user-friendly, point-in-time assessment tool which provides an 'at a glance' vocal profile for the clinician, voice coach and client. It examines the potential impact of a number of specific factors on the voice: general health; vocal history; vocal health; voice care; vocal status; voice genogram; anxiety and stress; social functioning; vocal demand; and environmental factors, and offers an overview of the theory to support this choice. The questions have been carefully designed to elicit easily-recorded information from the client about a range of factors that are known to affect vocal quality. The tick-box answers then translate into the Vocal Impact Profile, a visual presentation of the areas of greatest impact on voice. In addition to offering a point-in-time profile, the "VIP" may also be used as a template for achieving change in a specific area of vulnerability and provide a robust visual reinforcement of that change over time. It is, therefore, helpful as a therapy-monitoring tool and as an evaluation of client awareness, behavioural change and clinical effectiveness. Self-administered by the client, the questionnaire should take approximately ten to fifteen minutes to complete. The clinician or voice coach enters the responses into the computer programme (supplied on downloadable resources) or transfers them manually on to the hard copy thus offering a clear visual representation of the results. Worked examples of the VIP are included, presenting six clients with very different aetiologies and with a range of vocal problems. These examples clearly demonstrate the value of the Profile and its visual impact. As a clinical tool the "VIP" provides a subjective qualitative measure, which may be used as an adjunct to other assessment procedures. In addition, it provides a concrete method of determining and ordering the factors to be targeted in terms of therapy or voice work. Using the "VIP" should shorten the time necessary for completion of case history in the case of a voice therapy client, and, when used by a voice coach, the profile will identify areas for further discussion. The Profile is not time-sensitive so it may be repeated to evaluate client awareness of vocal change and implementation of agreed strategies. The "VIP" provides the clinician or voice coach with an efficient and effective means of auditing the therapy or coaching process and promotes a holistic partnership model of intervention.

Molecular Diagnostics: Promises and Possibilities (Hardcover, 2010 ed.): Mousumi Debnath, Godavarthi B. K. S. Prasad, Prakash... Molecular Diagnostics: Promises and Possibilities (Hardcover, 2010 ed.)
Mousumi Debnath, Godavarthi B. K. S. Prasad, Prakash S. Bisen
R4,783 Discovery Miles 47 830 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

A rapid development in diverse areas of molecular biology and genetic engineering resulted in emergence of variety of tools. These tools are not only applicable to basic researches being carried out world over, but also exploited for precise detection of abnormal conditions in plants, animals and human body. Although a basic researcher is well versed with few techniques used by him/her in the laboratory, they may not be well acquainted with methodologies, which can be used to work out some of their own research problems. The picture is more blurred when the molecular diagnostic tools are to be used by physicians, scientists and technicians working in diagnostic laboratories in hospitals, industry and academic institutions. Since many of them are not trained in basics of these methods, they come across several gray areas in understanding of these tools. The accurate application of molecular diagnostic tools demands in depth understanding of the methodology for precise detection of the abnormal condition of living body. To meet the requirements of a good book on molecular diagnostics of students, physicians, scientists working in agricultural, veterinary, medical and pharmaceutical sciences, it needs to expose the reader lucidly to: Give basic science behind commonly used tools in diagnostics Expose the readers to detailed applications of these tools and Make them aware the availability of such diagnostic tools The book will attract additional audience of pathologists, medical microbiologists, pharmaceutical sciences, agricultural scientists and veterinary doctors if the following topics are incorporated at appropriate places in Unit II or separately as a part of Unit-III in the book. Molecular diagnosis of diseases in agricultural crops Molecular diagnosis of veterinary diseases. Molecular epidemiology, which helps to differentiate various epidemic strains and sources of disease outbreaks. Even in different units of the same hospital, the infections could be by different strains of the same species and the information becomes valuable for infection control strategies. Drug resistance is a growing problem for bacterial, fungal and parasitic microbes and the molecular biology tools can help to detect the drug resistance genes without the cultivation and in vitro sensitivity testing. Molecular diagnostics offers faster help in the selection of the proper antibiotic for the treatment of tuberculosis, which is a major problem of the in the developing world. The conventional culture and drug sensitivity testing of tuberculosis bacilli is laborious and time consuming, whereas molecular diagnosis offers rapid drug resistant gene detection even from direct clinical samples. The same approach for HIV, malaria and many more diseases needs to be considered. Molecular diagnostics in the detection of diseases during foetal life is an upcoming area in the foetal medicine in case of genetic abnormalities and infectious like TORCH complex etc. The book will be equally useful to students, scientists and professionals working in the field of molecular diagnostics.

Shaken Brain - The Science, Care, and Treatment of Concussion (Hardcover): Elizabeth Sandel Shaken Brain - The Science, Care, and Treatment of Concussion (Hardcover)
Elizabeth Sandel
R665 Discovery Miles 6 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A physician with thirty-five years of experience treating people with brain injuries shares the latest research on concussions and best practices for care. The explosion of attention to sports concussions has many of us thinking about the addled brains of our football and hockey heroes. But concussions happen to everyone, not just elite athletes. Children fall from high chairs, drivers and cyclists get into accidents, and workers encounter unexpected obstacles on the job. Concussions are prevalent, occurring even during everyday activities. In fact, in less time than it takes to read this sentence, three Americans will experience a concussion. The global statistics are no less staggering. Shaken Brain offers expert advice and urgently needed answers. Elizabeth Sandel, MD, is a board-certified physician who has spent more than three decades treating patients with traumatic brain injuries, training clinicians, and conducting research. Here she explains the scientific evidence for what happens to the brain and body after a concussion. And she shares stories from a diverse group of patients, educating readers on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Few people understand that what they do in the aftermath of their injury will make a dramatic difference to their future well-being; patient experiences testify to the best practices for concussion sufferers and their caregivers. Dr. Sandel also shows how to evaluate risks before participating in activities and how to use proven safety strategies to mitigate these risks. Today concussions aren't just injuries-they're big news. And, like anything in the news, they're the subject of much misinformation. Shaken Brain is the resource patients and their families, friends, and caregivers need to understand how concussions occur, what to expect from healthcare providers, and what the long-term consequences may be.

BORB - Birmingham Object Recognition Battery (Hardcover): Glyn W. Humphreys, Jane M. Riddoch BORB - Birmingham Object Recognition Battery (Hardcover)

Clinical and Diagnostic Interviewing (Hardcover, 2nd Edition): Robert J. Craig Clinical and Diagnostic Interviewing (Hardcover, 2nd Edition)
Robert J. Craig
R3,241 Discovery Miles 32 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a comprehensive reference on both the structure and content of the clinical interview and its authors present the strategies and fundamental knowledge required to conduct the clinical interview with different kinds of patients and for specific psychopathologies. It provides a thorough overview on clinical and diagnostic interviewing with state-of-the-art presentations of significant theoretical orientations (psychoanalytic, behavioral, humanistic/existential, and family systems) as well as information on frequently encountered psychopathologies. The book stresses the idea that the clinical interview is controlled by the therapist and develops in a phase-sequenced progression along predictable lines. Clinical interviews flow from a theoretical stance on the part of the clinician, are usually semi-structured to the extent that areas are probed consistent with official diagnostic criteria and with know aspects of suspected psychopathologies, including co-morbidities, and include an understanding of the patient's personality and possible personality disorders that may complicate treatment of Axis I disorders or which may be the focus of treatment itself. This book elucidates this process and may serves as a primary source for practitioners who want to know more about the process of clinical interviewing as well as a useful text for those students who are in the process of learning clinical interviewing.

The Illness Narratives - Suffering, Healing, And The Human Condition (Paperback): Arthur Kleinman The Illness Narratives - Suffering, Healing, And The Human Condition (Paperback)
Arthur Kleinman
R449 R390 Discovery Miles 3 900 Save R59 (13%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Western medicine treats sick patients like broken machines -- figure out what is physically wrong, fix it, and send the patient on their way. But humans are not machines. When we are ill, we experience our illness: we become scared, distressed, tired, weary. Our illnesses are not just biological conditions, but human ones. It was Arthur Kleinman, a Harvard psychiatrist and anthropologist, who saw this truth when most of his fellow doctors did not. Based on decades of clinical experience studying and treating chronic illness, The Illness Narratives makes a case for interpreting the illness experience of patients as a core feature of doctoring. Before Being Mortal or The Body Keeps the Score, there was The Illness Narratives. It remains today a prescient and passionate case for bridging the gap between patient and practitioner.

Diagnosis and Risk Management in Primary Care - Words That Count, Numbers That Speak (Paperback, 1 New Ed): Wilfrid Treasure Diagnosis and Risk Management in Primary Care - Words That Count, Numbers That Speak (Paperback, 1 New Ed)
Wilfrid Treasure
R1,384 Discovery Miles 13 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

'Medical technology is beneficial for well researched dangerous diseases. However, most symptoms that people bring to their primary care physician have no single clearly identifiable cause: investigations and drugs do more harm than good - and also waste resources - ' - Wilfrid Treasure Diagnosis and Risk Management in Primary Care teaches that adopting an evidence-based approach to primary care improves patient care and treatment outcomes. It demonstrates that brief clinical assessments, repeated if necessary, allow effective diagnosis while avoiding the costs and complications associated with more advanced testing. Adopting a fresh approach, this book sets consultation skills alongside evidence-based information by both itemising the specific techniques and facts that are needed in the consulting room, and providing detailed information on odds and likelihood ratios to quantify risk and deal with uncertainty. This book provides food for thought, and helps doctors develop communication skills that support their personal styles of consulting, encouraging a more traditional, intuitive treatment. It provides a map of the consultation and a compass to navigate through symptoms, signs and evidence - listening to their patients with one ear and, with the other, to the reflective inner voice of reason. General Practitioner Specialist Trainees and their teachers will find much of interest, as will established General Practitioners with an interest in maintaining traditional models of care. Undergraduate medical students and candidates for the MRCGP will find this an ideal reader for the clinical skills assessment. 'What a breath of fresh air to find an author capable of putting the patient back at the centre of the consultation and who is able to entertain at the same time as he informs and to stimulate critical reflection while nudging us in the direction of a rigorous approach to diagnosis, and the assessment and communication of risk.' From the foreword by Roger Jones

Sociology of Diagnosis (Hardcover): P. J. McGann, David Hutson, Barbara Katz Rothman Sociology of Diagnosis (Hardcover)
P. J. McGann, David Hutson, Barbara Katz Rothman; Series edited by Barbara Katz Rothman
R4,193 Discovery Miles 41 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Diagnosis is central to medical practice, medical knowledge and research, medicalization dynamics, and health and illness experience. Embedded in social relations, diagnoses reflect and shape social dynamics and cultural concerns. Diagnoses are integral to resource allocation, form the basis for identities, and may become a focal point of turf battles and contested authority. Some diagnoses are willingly embraced, whereas others are strenuously resisted. Some diagnoses come and go as fashions; others persist. A sociological approach to diagnosis therefore occupies a complex intersection of diverse subfields including medical sociology, sociology of knowledge, mental health, deviance, social control, sociology of science, social movements, the body, sexualities, gender, and health and illness. This volume explores the breadth of diagnosis and diagnoses through empirical reports, conceptual work, and theoretical statements from diverse perspectives. Reflecting the multi-faceted nature of the emerging field, the book is arranged in five sections: Frameworks, Context, Contestation, Identity, and Social Control. Sociology of Diagnosis thus provides both a starting point for discussion and means with which to organize the nascent conceptual landscape.
