This resource has been updated to include: * New and updated treatment plans * All treatment plans, interventions strategies, applications, and practice implications are evidence based * Instructions on doing diagnostic assessments and differential diagnosis using the DSM-5 * Changes to coding and billing using the DSM-5 and ICD-10 The book includes robust tools for students, instructors, and new graduates seeking licensure. DSM-5 in Action makes the DSM-5 accessible to all practitioners, allowing for more accurate, comprehensive care.
The interpretation of skin lesions in children that may be due to abuse is often not straightforward, and many reports have been published on dermatological disorders and accidental injuries that were unjustly regarded as signs of child abuse. This book describes in detail the cutaneous manifestations of the physical abuse of children and devotes particular attention to differential diagnosis. Careful guidance is provided on the optimal evaluation of children presenting with findings potentially attributable to abuse. The numerous images and detailed background information will develop the ability of the reader to assess and interpret the clinical signs of abuse, and to distinguish these signs from other causes of injury, such as accidents and self-mutilation, and dermatological disorders. "Cutaneous Manifestations of Child Abuse" will be invaluable for pediatric dermatologists, pediatricians, forensic experts, and others who deal with the physical abuse of children.

The biopsychosocial model for the assessment, diagnosis and
treatment of disease has continued to develop since its inception
in the mid-twentieth century by Dr. George Engel. The tripartite
model is based on general systems theory, and allows for a
clinician to get a comprehensive picture of the physical, mental
and environmental influences on a patient's health (the authors
stress the importance of the concept of an interpersonal
clinician-patient relationship). This model of mental health is
particularly useful during the initial interviewing and patient
presentation processes, during which time the practitioner hopes to
gather as much useful information as possible about a new patient.
Differential Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder provides a framework for clinical considerations and best practices related to diagnosing children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) versus commonly co-occurring conditions. Differential diagnosis is a complex process, and it is common for clinicians to observe symptom overlap between conditions. In this comprehensive text, the authors focus on the similarities and differences between ASD and a second diagnosis. Leading experts provide practical guidance in the diagnostic process for ASD versus a second condition, such as anxiety or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Each chapter includes clinical case studies to provide real-world examples of how clinicians make diagnostic decisions. Ample illustrations and 'decision trees' provide a visual representation of clinical decision-making.

This book examining diagnosis was first published in 1985. Diagnosis is at the centre of medical practice and depends on skilled information processing and decision making. Medical students, who will spend their working lives gathering information from patients, making decisions and solving problems need to be taught the necessary techniques. One aim of the book is, therefore, to give teachers an account of some of the basic ideas which have been applied to the diagnostic process and to medical problem solving in general. Another aim is to make teachers more aware of the principles underlying their clinical work, for it has been shown repeatedly that clinicians' actions do not always coincide with their teaching and there is a distinct gap between what they do and what they teach. This introduction to the fundamental concepts of information processing and decision making is written at a level which makes it appropriate reading for those who have not previously read widely in these areas. It will be of interest to clinical teachers in medical and allied health professions. |
