Fourteen Lessons in Yogi Philosophy (Hardcover): Yogi Ramacharaka Fourteen Lessons in Yogi Philosophy (Hardcover)
Yogi Ramacharaka
R797 Discovery Miles 7 970 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Followers of the New Thought movement of the early 20th century vehemently believed in the concept of "mind over matter.,." and this 1903 book may well have been their guide to achieving it. One of the most influential thinkers of this early "New Age" philosophy here demonstrates how to achieve the ultimate indulgence of the "pure spirit" that defines us all. Yogi Ramacharaka explains how to shed the "sheaths that prevent its full expression" via: . the astral plane . the instinctive mind . the spiritual mind . the human aura . thought dynamics . clairvoyance and telepathy . personal magnetism . occult therapeutics . spiritual cause and effect . and more. American writer WILLIAM WALKER ATKINSON (1862-1932) was editor of the popular magazine New Thought from 1901 to 1905, and editor of the journal Advanced Thought from 1916 to 1919. He authored dozens of New Thought books under numerous pseudonyms, some of which are likely still unknown today, including "Yogi Ramacharaka" and "Theron Q. Dumont."

Since the '30s, he had an active role in China both on the literary and philosophical scenes, and, through his writings, he exerted an important influence in the moulding of numerous generations of intellectuals. D.T. Suzuki (1870-1966) reached global fame for his writings on Zen Buddhism. In this introduction to his theories of self, knowledge, and the world, Suzuki is presented as a Buddhist philosopher in his own right. Beginning with a biography of his life providing the historical context to his thought and discussing Suzuki's influences, chapters cover the Zen notion of the non-self and Suzuki's Zen view of consciousness, language, and religious truths. His ideas about philosophy and radical views on rationality and faith come to life in two new complete translations of The Place of Peace in our Heart (1894) and Religion and Science (1949), which helps us to understand why Suzuki's description of Zen attracted the attention of many leading intellectuals and helped it become a household name in the English-speaking world. Offering the first complete overview of Suzuki's approach, reputation, and legacy as a philosopher, this is for anyone interested in the philosophical relevance and development of Mahayana Buddhism today.

Psychology in the Indian Tradition (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): K. Ramakrishna Rao, Anand C. Paranjpe Psychology in the Indian Tradition (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
K. Ramakrishna Rao, Anand C. Paranjpe
R4,163 Discovery Miles 41 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This authoritative volume, written by two well-known psychologist-philosophers, presents a model of the person and its implications for psychological theory and practice. Professors Ramakrishna Rao and Anand Paranjpe draw the contours of Indian psychology, describe the methods of study, explain crucial concepts, and discuss the central ideas and their application, illustrating them with insightful case studies and judicious reviews of available research data and existing scholarly literature. The main theme is organized around the thesis that psychology is the study of the person and that the person is a unique composite of body, mind and consciousness. The goal of the person is self-realization. Self-realization consists in the realization of one's true self as distinct from the manifest ego and it is facilitated by cultivating consciousness. Cultivating consciousness leads to a kind of psycho-spiritual symbiosis resulting in personal transformation, altruistic value orientation and flowering of the hidden human potential.

Human society has experienced the primitive, slavery, feudalistic, and capitalist stages and has witnessed two world wars and numerous regional wars. Humankind currently faces various severe ecological and sociological problems. In "On the Culture of Harmony, " author Gordon Wang answers the serious and significant question of where human beings are headed in terms of both time and space.

Wang traveled across five continents and through dozens of countries searching for answers; now, he shares his results in "On the Culture of Harmony." He discusses the origin, concept, and domains of the Culture of Harmony based on an in-depth analysis of the Chinese and world culture and philosophy. He demonstrates how the globalization of economy and information calls for the dominance of the Culture of Harmony, which should be used to correct human bias, establish core values, lead human spirits, and expedite borderless unions.

Through a unique perspective of the physical and social sciences, Wang communicates the need to promote a harmonious society through the Culture of Harmony.

Comparative Philosophy without Borders (Hardcover): Arindam Chakrabarti, Ralph Weber Comparative Philosophy without Borders (Hardcover)
Arindam Chakrabarti, Ralph Weber
R4,313 Discovery Miles 43 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Comparative Philosophy without Borders presents original scholarship by leading contemporary comparative philosophers, each addressing a philosophical issue that transcends the concerns of any one cultural tradition. By critically discussing and weaving together these contributions in terms of their philosophical presuppositions, this cutting-edge volume initiates a more sophisticated, albeit diverse, understanding of doing comparative philosophy. Within a broad conception of the alternative shapes that work in philosophy may take, this volume breaks three kinds of boundaries: between cultures, historical periods and sub-disciplines of philosophy such as metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, and political philosophy. As well as distinguishing three phases of the development of comparative philosophy up to the present day, the editors argue why the discipline now needs to enter a new phase. Putting to use philosophical thought and textual sources from Eurasia and Africa, contributors discuss modern psychological and cognitive science approaches to the nature of mind and topics as different as perception, poetry, justice, authority, and the very possibility of understanding other people. Comparative Philosophy without Borders demonstrates how drawing on philosophical resources from across cultural traditions can produce sound state-of-the-art progressive philosophy. Fusing the horizons of traditions opens up a space for creative conceptual thinking outside all sorts of boxes.

The 11 essays collected here have been composed by members of the North American Spinoza Society. They exhibit the fruits of the research, investigation and erudition of an array of established scholars and newer students whose interpretations of Spinoza's philosophical doctrines are receiving critical acclaim. This is the first collection in the English language dedicated exclusively to topics, problems or questions raised by the teachings found in Baruch Spinoza's Tractatus theologico-politicus. Divided into the themes of piety, peace, and the freedom to philosophize, the essays treat Spinoza's views on faith and philosophy, miracles, the light of Scripture, political power, religion, the state, the body politic, the idea of tolerance, and philosophic communication, as well as his connections to Walter Benjamin, Blaise Pascal, David Hume, and his Jewish heritage. Readership: An excellent collection for students and scholars studying Spinoza, the history of early modern philosophy, political philosophy, philosophy of religion, and those concerned with theologico-political questions.

Thomas Taro Lennerfors, Kiyoshi Murata
R3,350 Discovery Miles 33 500 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book explores the relevance of Japanese ethics for the field of ethics of technology. It covers the theories of Japanese ethicists such as Nishida Kitaro, Watsuji Tetsuro, Imamichi Tomonobu, Yuasa Yasuo, as well as more contemporary ethicists, and explores their relevance for the analysis of energy technologies, ICT, robots, and geoengineering. It features contributions from Japanese scholars, and international scholars who have applied Japanese ethics to problems in the global condition. Technological development is considered to cause new ethical issues, such as genetically modified organisms fostering monocultures, nanotechnologies causing issues of privacy, as well as health and environmental issues, robotics raising issues about the meaning of humanity, and the risks of nuclear power, as witnessed in the Fukushima disaster. At the same time, technology embodies a hope for mankind, such as ICT improving relationships between human beings and nature, and smart systems assisting humans in leading a more ethical and environmentally friendly life. This book explores these ethical issues and their impact from a Japanese perspective.

Simply written, and with a view to taking the wisdom of Confucius out of the hands of the academics and the philosophers and making it accessible to the general reader, Confucius From the Heart gives us a contemporary Confucius, one who can teach us how to attain spiritual happiness, adjust our daily routines and find our place in modern life. Yu Dan argues that his sayings, or Analects - far from being merely interesting quotes from ancient lore, of little use in our hectic, stress-filled world. Instead, they are simple truths that can speak to each and every one of us and help us lead better, happier, calmer lives.

Graham Priest
R2,227 Discovery Miles 22 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Graham Priest presents an original exploration of philosophical questions concerning the one and the many. He covers a wide range of issues in metaphysics-including unity, identity, grounding, mereology, universals, being, intentionality, and nothingness-and deploys the techniques of paraconsistent logic in order to offer a radically new treatment of unity. Priest brings together traditions of Western and Asian thought that are usually kept separate in academic philosophy: he draws on ideas from Plato, Heidegger, and Nagarjuna, among other philosophers.

Reconstructionist Confucianism - Rethinking Morality after the West (Hardcover, 2010 ed.): Ruiping Fan Reconstructionist Confucianism - Rethinking Morality after the West (Hardcover, 2010 ed.)
Ruiping Fan
R2,819 Discovery Miles 28 190 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Contrasting with conventional Neo-Confucian attempts to recast the Confucian heritage in light of modern Western values, this book offers a Reconstructionist Confucian project to reclaim Confucian resources to meet contemporary moral and public policy challenges. Ruiping Fan argues that popular accounts of human goods and social justice within the dominant individualist culture of the West are too insubstantial to direct a life of virtue and a proper structure of society. Instead, he demonstrates that the moral insights of Confucian thought are precisely those needed to fill the moral vacuum developing in post-communist China and to address similar problems in the West. The book has a depth of reflection on the Confucian tradition through a comparative philosophical strategy and a breadth of contemporary issues addressed unrivaled by any other work on these topics. It is the first in English to explore not only the endeavor to revive Confucianism in contemporary China, but also brings such an endeavor to bear upon the important ethical, social, and political difficulties being faced in 21st century China. The book should be of interest to any philosopher working in application of traditional Chinese philosophy to contemporary issues as well as any reader interested in comparative cultural and ethical studies.

Maimonides, Medical Aphorisms, Hebrew Translation by Nathan ha-Me'ati (English, Hebrew, Arabic, Hardcover): Gerrit Bos Maimonides, Medical Aphorisms, Hebrew Translation by Nathan ha-Me'ati (English, Hebrew, Arabic, Hardcover)
Gerrit Bos
R2,855 Discovery Miles 28 550 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The original Arabic text of Maimonides' major medical work, Medical Aphorisms, was critically edited and translated into English by Gerrit Bos in the years 2004-2017, and published in earlier volumes of the book series The Medical Works of Moses Maimonides. The present work is a new critical edition of the medieval Hebrew translation by Nathan ha-Me'ati, who was active as a translator of scientific texts in Rome in the late thirteenth century, where his colleague Zerahyah Hen had completed a translation of the same Maimonidean text in 1277, only a few years earlier. Nathan aimed to provide the general reader with a translation that was easier to understand than Zerahyah's translation. The present critical edition of Nathan's translation is primarily based on MS Paris, BN, heb. 1174, and not on MS Paris, BN, heb. 1173, used by Suessmann Muntner for his edition in 1959, as this copy suffers from many mistakes and corruptions.
