Psychology of Career Adaptability, Employability and Resilience (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Kobus Maree Psychology of Career Adaptability, Employability and Resilience (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Kobus Maree
R5,854 Discovery Miles 58 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines how the career counselling profession should respond to the changes in the world of work that have resulted from the increasing need to communicate faster and disseminate information more efficiently. It emphasizes the twin aims of enhancing a persons' career adaptability and helping them to become more employable, rather than linearly trying to find a job and remaining in one organisation for their entire career-lives. The book shows that, to achieve these aims, people need to acquire career resilience, especially since the world of work no longer provides workers with work-holding environments for the duration of their career-lives. It takes into account historical analyses which show that whenever major technological change has occurred and widespread job losses have ensued, people have managed to use the new technology to create new employment opportunities. Readers from career psychology and management research, vocational and professional career coaching, and students of career psychology will find this book delivers sound, updated theory demonstrating how perceived threats in the 21st century can conceivably be turned into opportunities.

European Youth Labour Markets - Problems and Policies (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Miguel Angel Malo, Almudena Moreno Minguez European Youth Labour Markets - Problems and Policies (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Miguel Angel Malo, Almudena Moreno Minguez
R4,487 Discovery Miles 44 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This timely analysis examines the complex state of youth unemployment across Europe and offers cogent policy suggestions for addressing this longstanding societal problem. The findings reveal numerous national and regional factors affecting youth joblessness-not only market and economic challenges, but also deep sociocultural and political dynamics underlying the situations. Coverage details how the standard transition from school to work is disrupted in an already depressed adult job market, and compares a wide range of responses in terms of both young people's educational decision-making and national youth policy. In particular, contributors assess whether the current crop of Youth Guarantee programs can/should be a model for employment policy across the continent. Among the topics covered: Youth labour market prospects and recent policy developments. Youth labour market in Central and Eastern Europe. Early school dropout in Spain: evolution during the Great Recession. Overeducation among European university graduates: a constraint or a choice? Promoting youth employment in Europe: evidence-based policy lessons. The evaluation of a Finnish youth guarantee: lessons for Europe? European Youth Labour Markets is of interest to an international audience of economists, sociologists, and leaders in governmental, non-profit, and corporate sectors through its broad and comparative macroeconomic focus and implications for policymaking, research, resource allocation, and policy evaluation.

All the Brains in the Business - The Engendered Brain in the 21st Century Organisation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Kate Lanz,... All the Brains in the Business - The Engendered Brain in the 21st Century Organisation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Kate Lanz, Paul Brown
R801 Discovery Miles 8 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The power of gender difference, not gender equality, is a secret source for success. Some smart businesses are starting to wake up to this fact. This book explores why and how. Properly valuing brain gender diversity in the workplace is one of the biggest and largely untapped sources of competitive advantage for modern businesses. Recent advances in neuroscience provide the key to unlocking it. Modern research shows that there are gender-based differences in the brain - it's just not as simple as a binary between a 'male brain' and 'female brain'. In fact, our brains are like a mosaic where many of the tiles are available in thousands of shades on a spectrum between pink and blue. The problem is that our workplaces tend to be governed by structures, processes and cultures that are practically pure blue. All the brains in the business that are elsewhere on the spectrum cannot thrive as they might, so sources of productivity, creativity and agility go untapped. Anyone who manages people needs to understand how the brain works and the impact it has on how people work together as teams. Anyone who wants to unlock the talent and productivity of all of their people needs to understand how recent findings around male- and female-type brains should shape the way they manage. Leading applied neuroscientists and international corporate coaches Kate Lanz and Paul Brown show you why and how to access all the brains in your business.

Police Socialisation, Identity and Culture - Becoming Blue (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Sarah Charman Police Socialisation, Identity and Culture - Becoming Blue (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Sarah Charman
R5,707 Discovery Miles 57 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book reinvigorates the debate about the origins and development of police culture within our changing social, economic and political landscape. An in-depth analysis and appreciation of the police socialisation, identity and culture literature is combined with a comprehensive four-year longitudinal study of new recruits to a police force in England. The result offers new insights into the development of, and influences upon, new police recruits who refer to themselves as a "new breed" of police officer. Adding significantly to the police culture literature, this original and empirically based research also provides valuable insights into the challenges of modern policing in an age of austerity. Scholars of policing and criminal justice, as well as police officers themselves will find this compelling reading.

Bjoern Roeber
R3,803 Discovery Miles 38 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This unique book on international business presents a critical review of the role of bounded rationality in internationalization process (IP) research. Corporate internationalization processes have been a subject of scientific debate for several decades. However, it is questionable whether behavioral research insights are sufficiently acknowledged in this academic discipline. Against this backdrop, the author critically assesses the behavioral assumptions of the Uppsala Model, which is commonly considered to be the pivotal approach in internationalization process research.

As this is of growing importance for building design and for building performance optimization, the book aims to provide a sound scientific basis for experimental studies in this field. It introduces the reader to fundamental questions about the topic and unfolds the different fields related to occupant actions and comfort. This is followed by more general questions about developing an appropriate research method and experimental design. A comprehensive overview of sensors for monitoring environmental and also behavioral and action-related quantities helps to set up an experiment. In this context, different experimental environments and data collection methods (in-situ, laboratories, surveys) are introduced and discussed in terms of their suitability for the respective research question. Furthermore, data management and reporting is addressed. The book concludes with fundamental challenges in conducting occupant studies, with chapters on ground truth, ethics and privacy.

An Evidence-based Approach to Authentic Leadership Development (Hardcover): Tony Fusco An Evidence-based Approach to Authentic Leadership Development (Hardcover)
Tony Fusco
R1,662 Discovery Miles 16 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book presents the first evidence-based approach to Authentic Leadership Development. It is based on a group-coaching format that brings together small groups of leaders to discuss personally significant leadership issues generally not explored in usual leadership development, such as the influence of their personal histories, the impact of their psychological make-up, and the ambitions for their future leadership. The book starts with an overview of the idea of authenticity and its philosophical roots, and explains how this informs the past/present/future group-coaching approach to Authentic Leadership Development. It presents statistical and conceptual evidence of the program's efficacy and explores how the social processes at work within the group positively impact and develop the leader's self-concept and the benefits this brings. Importantly, it also details exactly how the leader changes and grows as a result of the group-coaching, and the positive ways in which this benefits their leadership role and the organisations they work in. Finally, it questions the notion of ethics and morals in Authentic Leadership and critically re-appraises the idea of leadership development evaluation. Authentic Leadership Development group-coaching has been shown to develop leaders that are conscious, competent, confident and congruent and as the qualitative analysis presented in the book illustrates, these 4 over-arching categories are made up of 7 further key leadership attributes that are developed, which include an enhanced Strategic Orientation, increased Confidence and Clarity and greater Management Mindfulness, among others. The book also features personal vignettes throughout, which illustrate how individual leaders have effectively applied these newly developed attributes in their leadership roles. An Evidence-based Approach to Authentic Leadership Development represents essential reading for leaders who want to engage in a 'proven' form of ALD. It will be of great interest to professionals across a variety of industries who have responsibility to provide robust leadership development programs for their organisations, as well as coaches specialising in executive, business and leadership coaching and those interested in new applications for group coaching.

The Leadership Hubris Epidemic - Biological Roots and Strategies for Prevention (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Peter Garrard The Leadership Hubris Epidemic - Biological Roots and Strategies for Prevention (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Peter Garrard
R4,233 Discovery Miles 42 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This edited collection surveys and analyses the multidimensional problem of Hubris syndrome, and its deleterious effect on leadership within organisations. The study develops an extended metaphor of the social and political ill of Hubris as a virulent, communicable disease of dysfunctional leadership, illustrating its ubiquity and potential for serious harm. Taking a biological perspective to understand the possible underlying mechanisms as well as the environments in which hubris has been found to thrive, contributors emphasise the notion of prevention over cure. Divided into three sections, The Leadership Hubris Epidemic examines psychological, neuroendocrinological and neuropsychological approaches to the biology of Hubris, explores factors that encourage or inhibit its growth, and finally provides methods for preventing or retarding its development. This book has huge interdisciplinary appeal and scholars of biology, psychology, sociology, management, and politics will find the topic extremely useful, as well as anyone who is interested in the structure and governance of organisations.

The Actor and the Character - Explorations in the Psychology of Transformative Acting (Paperback): Vladimir Mirodan The Actor and the Character - Explorations in the Psychology of Transformative Acting (Paperback)
Vladimir Mirodan
R1,192 Discovery Miles 11 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Transformative acting remains the aspiration of many an emerging actor, and constitutes the achievement of some of the most acclaimed performances of our age: Daniel Day-Lewis as Lincoln, Meryl Streep as Mrs Thatcher, Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter - the list is extensive, and we all have our favourites. But what are the physical and psychological processes which enable actors to create characters so different from themselves? To understand this unique phenomenon, Vladimir Mirodan provides both a historical overview of the evolution of notions of 'character' in Western theatre and a stunning contemporary analysis of the theoretical implications of transformative acting. The Actor and the Character: Surveys the main debates surrounding the concept of dramatic character and - contrary to recent trends - explains why transformative actors conceive their characters as 'independent' of their own personalities. Describes some important techniques used by actors to construct their characters by physical means: work on objects, neutral and character masks, Laban movement analysis, Viewpoints, etc. Examines the psychology behind transformative acting from the perspectives of both psychoanalysis and scientific psychology and, based on recent developments in psychology, asks whether transformation is not just acting folklore but may actually entail temporary changes to the brain structures of the actors. The Actor and the Character speaks not only to academics and students studying actor training and acting theory, but contributes to current lively academic debates around character. This is a compelling and original exploration of the limits of acting theory and practice, psychology, and creative work, in which Mirodan boldly re-examines some of the fundamental assumptions of actor training and some basic tenets of theatre practice to ask: What happens when one of us 'becomes somebody else'?

The Economics of Motivation and Organization - An Introduction (Hardcover): Peter-J. Jost The Economics of Motivation and Organization - An Introduction (Hardcover)
Peter-J. Jost
R4,270 Discovery Miles 42 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this unique book, Peter-J. Jost provides a comprehensive economic-psychological approach for successfully managing employees. Based on the analysis of the employee?s individual work behavior, he illustrates that instead of treating employees as input elements of production, and managing and controlling their work, organizations need to motivate their employees to act in the interest of the firm and in accordance with its goals. The author considers the employee as the ?building block? holding economic organizations together, and outlines how their personal circumstances, behavior and working conditions affect motivation. The influence of individual decision-making processes and psychological factors on behavior in the workplace is also discussed. Theoretical insights are underpinned by a range of case studies, and the impact of inadequate leadership on firms is highlighted. Motivation problems within organizations are evaluated and potential solutions prescribed. This book will prove an insightful and fascinating read for researchers, students and practitioners wishing to develop a deeper understanding of the myriad factors that affect the motivation of employees within an organization.

Educator Stress - An Occupational Health Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Teresa Mendonca McIntyre, Scott E. Mcintyre,... Educator Stress - An Occupational Health Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Teresa Mendonca McIntyre, Scott E. Mcintyre, David J. Francis
R6,600 Discovery Miles 66 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book brings together the most current thinking and research on educator stress and how education systems can support quality teachers and quality education. It adopts an occupational health perspective to examine the problem of educator stress and presents theory-driven intervention strategies to reduce stress load and support educator resilience and healthy school organizations. The book provides an international perspective on key challenges facing educators such as teacher stress, teacher retention, training effective teachers, teacher accountability, cyber-bullying in schools, and developing healthy school systems. Divided into four parts, the book starts out by introducing and defining the problem of educator stress internationally and examining educator stress in the context of school, education system, and education policy factors. Part I includes chapters on educator mental health and well-being, stress-related biological vulnerabilities, the relation of stress to teaching self-efficacy, turnover in charter schools, and the role of culture in educator stress. Part II reviews the main conceptual models that explain educator stress while applying an occupational health framework to education contexts which stresses the role of organizational factors, including work organization and work practices. It ends with a proposal of a dynamic integrative theory of educator stress, which highlights the changing nature of educator stress with time and context. Part III starts with the definition of what constitute healthy school organizations as a backdrop to the following chapters which review the application of occupational health psychology theories and intervention approaches to reducing educator stress, promoting teacher resources and developing healthy school systems. Chapters include interventions at the individual, individual-organizational interface and organizational levels. Part III ends with a chapter addressing cyber-bullying, a new challenge affecting schools and teachers. Part IV discusses the implications for research, practice and policy in education, including teacher training and development. In addition, it presents a review of methodological issues facing researchers on educator stress and identifies future trends for research on this topic, including the use of ecological momentary assessment in educator stress research. The editors' concluding comments reflect upon the application of an occupational health perspective to advance research, practice and policy directed at reducing stress in educators, and promoting teacher and school well-being.

Learn or Die - Using Science to Build a Leading-Edge Learning Organization (Paperback): Edward D. Hess Learn or Die - Using Science to Build a Leading-Edge Learning Organization (Paperback)
Edward D. Hess
R431 Discovery Miles 4 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

To compete with today's increasing globalization and rapidly evolving technologies, individuals and organizations must take their ability to learn-the foundation for continuous improvement, operational excellence, and innovation-to a much higher level. In Learn or Die, Edward D. Hess combines recent advances in neuroscience, psychology, behavioral economics, and education with key research on high-performance businesses to create an actionable blueprint for becoming a leading-edge learning organization. Learn or Die examines the process of learning from an individual and an organizational standpoint. From an individual perspective, the book discusses the cognitive, emotional, motivational, attitudinal, and behavioral factors that promote better learning. Organizationally, Learn or Die focuses on the kinds of structures, culture, leadership, employee learning behaviors, and human resource policies that are necessary to create an environment that enables critical and innovative thinking, learning conversations, and collaboration. The volume also provides strategies to mitigate the reality that humans can be reflexive, lazy thinkers who seek confirmation of what they believe to be true and affirmation of their self-image. Exemplar learning organizations discussed include the secretive Bridgewater Associates, LP; Intuit, Inc.; United Parcel Service (UPS); W. L. Gore & Associates; and IDEO.

Society Against Itself - Political Correctness and Organizational Self-Destruction (Paperback): Howard S. Schwartz Society Against Itself - Political Correctness and Organizational Self-Destruction (Paperback)
Howard S. Schwartz
R1,138 Discovery Miles 11 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Political correctness involves much more than a restriction of speech. It represents a broad cultural transformation, a shift in the way people understand things and organize their lives; a change in the way meaning is made. The problem addressed in this book is that, for reasons the author explores, some ways of making meaning support the creation and maintenance of organization, while others do not. Organizations are cultural products and rely upon psychological roots that go very deep. The basic premise of this book is that organizations are made up of the rules, common understandings, and obligations that the father represents, and which are given meaning in the Oedipal dynamic. In anti-oedipal psychology, however, they are seen as locuses of deprivation and structures of oppression. Anti-oedipal meaning, then, is geared toward the destruction of organization. This is done in the name of a higher morality, which demands compensatory love for those who have been deprived of love in the past by the father and his organizations, who should be hated and destroyed. The author looks at how anti-oedipal dynamics have played out in various organizational failures to which political correctness has led. These include the Jayson Blair scandal at the "New York Times," the destruction of employee morale at the Ford Motor Company and the Cincinnati Police Department, the self-destruction of Antioch College, and the forcing out of Larry Summers at Harvard University. He concludes with some reflections on the shift from Oedipal to anti-oedipal meaning that is represented by Princess Diana supplanting Queen Elizabeth as the national symbol of the United Kingdom.

Making Career Stories - Navigating Work and a Sense of Security (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Mark Scillio Making Career Stories - Navigating Work and a Sense of Security (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Mark Scillio
R2,362 Discovery Miles 23 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is about how people construct career stories: the stories we use to make sense of our work life. Mark Scillio explores the idea of security in the current turbulent employment climate, investigating employment experiences in developed, wealthy countries like Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom-where careers have become fragmented, complex, and uncertain. Using Anthony Giddens' notion of ontological security, Scillio develops a concept of career security that goes beyond economic and financial concerns and encompasses the personal and social meaning of work. The ramifications of succeeding (or failing) to forge a good career narrative are explored through a series of detailed case studies.

Understanding Consumer Financial Behavior - Money Management in an Age of Financial Illiteracy (Paperback, 1st ed. 2016): W.... Understanding Consumer Financial Behavior - Money Management in an Age of Financial Illiteracy (Paperback, 1st ed. 2016)
W. Fred Van Raaij
R3,477 Discovery Miles 34 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Government policies, marketing campaigns of banks, insurance companies, and other financial institutions, and consumers' protective actions all depend on assumptions about consumer financial behavior. Unfortunately, many consumers have no or little knowledge of budgeting, financial products, and financial planning. It is therefore important that organizations and market authorities know why consumers spend, borrow, insure, invest, and save for their retirement - or why they do not. Understanding Consumer Financial Behavior provides a systemic economic and behavioral approach to the way people handle their finances. It discusses the different types of financial behaviors consumers may engage in and explores the psychological explanations for their behavior and choices. This exciting new book is essential reading for scholars of marketing, finance, and management; financial professionals; and consumer policy makers.
